Chapter 62
Marcel entered the kitchen with a yawn.
"Long night?" Kol asked, a cup of coffee in his hand as he stood by the kitchen aisle watching his friend drag sluggishly into the kitchen. "Let me guess: Couldn't sleep without poppa again?"
Distracted by his own laughter, Kol released the grip on his coffee mug just enough for Marcel to vamp it out of his hand without spilling a drop. Kol could only stare on in defeated anger as Marcel proceeded to down his morning treat.
"Not cool, mate."
Marcel slammed the empty mug on the counter and said, "Yeah, well, while you were in here thinking of funny remarks," He dug into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone, opening it to his most recent text messages. "Check out what I've found."
Kol's eyes narrowed at seeing the contact name at the top of the messages. "Joe's Pizza?"
"Just a precaution in case Klaus or Elijah found my phone. I had Josh do some asking around and he found a clue leading to the whereabouts of the pig farmer. A vamp from Mystic Falls."
"So...Joe's Pizza is actually..."
"Tyler Lockwood."
"No," Kol slid the phone back into Marcel's hand without reading any of the messages.
"Kol, it's the only lead we have."
"I told you, I don't play well with Mystic Falls vamps and I don't trust them." Kol turned away from Marcel and walked away. "He could be leading us into a trap."
"But if he's right, our guy is less than an hour away from us."
Kol paused in the doorway, suddenly intrigued. "You'd trust the word of our enemies?"
"We're on the same side here. They want their friends back, we want to get rid of anyone who opposes us. Why would they lie?"
"It could have all been a trap from the very beginning, mate. Don't trust the Mystic Falls crew."
"Kol-"
"What happened to the 'They're Trying to Take Over Our City' Marcellus?"
"If we help them get their people back, they go back to Virginia and we never have to see them again. As long as Mystic Falls is taken over by Klaus's sirelings, they can't go back which means they're going to stick close to New Orleans because they know we are the only people who can protect them. I don't want to have to protect them."
"Then don't. We will find our own way to find and get rid of Klaus's sirelings that don't involve teaming up with those traitors."
Marcel crossed the kitchen to Kol, grabbing his arm as his friend tried to turn his back on him again. "You're being unreasonable."
Kol yanked his arm from Marcel's hold. "Is it unreasonable to trust the lot that lured me to my death? Klaus, Elijah, and Freya are forcing me put up with you and Finn but that doesn't mean I have to forgive everyone who's ever tried to kill me, mate."
Marcel's eyes narrowed at Kol's veiled reminder of the bite Marcel gave him over twelve years ago. He watched as Kol marched out of the kitchen and followed him into the corridor.
"Didn't realize it was a bother to have to deal with me!" Marcel barked.
"Well, it is," Kol bit, marching into the courtyard and then pausing to yell back at Marcel, "You're stubborn...and spoiled...and you're so cocky that you don't stop to think of how your actions are gonna affect the rest of us."
"I am thinking about all of us!"
Kol threw his hand up, waving off Marcel's claim with a heavy groan of disbelief. He walked away, angry at Marcel for being gullible enough to fall for what he assumed was obviously a trap.
Marcel spun him back around and growled, "You're just afraid that if it's a trap, Klaus and Elijah will have to save us...and we both know what'll happen after that."
Shame curled Kol's lips into a frown. He pushed Marcel's away with a heavy palm to the center of his chest and growled, "You just never know when to quit when you're ahead."
"I'll quit when you agree to come with me to check out this lead. I know I act cocky sometimes but I'm not stupid. I know when I'm outmatched and whatever I'm walking to here, be it a nest of centuries-old vampires of the Mystic Falls crew, I'm gonna need help. I don't wanna drag Josh and Lora into this if I don't have to. And as much as I love Rebekah, after our last encounter with the consequences of going after Klaus's sireline, I don't want to see her in that position again."
Kol grunted. "But you have no qualm of putting me in that position."
Marcel smiled. "Not a one."
Releasing a burst of air through his nose, Kol said, "Fine, I'll go witcha. But not today. We're not even supposed to be outta our rooms today. If Elijah found out-"
"If Elijah found out,"
Kol and Marcel froze at the icy cut of Elijah's voice coming from the top of the staircase. They stared into each other's eyes, afraid to look up at the man in fear that he had overheard their planning.
"What" Elijah continued.
The sound of his brother's feet falling onto each wooden step sent a shiver down Kol's spine.
Standing directly behind Kol, Elijah said, "You two are down a bit early for breakfast."
Kol looked slyly over his shoulder, a wide smile gracing his face. "Just...needed a little pick-me-up to start the morning off. Shared a freezer bag with Marcel to keep the blood-shedding around here to a minimum with the little tyke running around here now."
"Really?" Elijah looked between the two of them as if he could smell their plotting in the air. "What were you just talking about?"
Kol stared straight ahead at Marcel, his throat going dry in fear.
"Kol was..." Marcel started slowly. "Just saying that...we should stop drinking the freezer bags since they're getting a little low and Finn needs them more than us."
Elijah looked to Kol with wide eyes. Kol had never been so considerate when it came to Finn.
Kol narrowed his eyes at Marcel, sure that Elijah would see through his lie since he knew how much Kol detested Finn.
"Yeah," Marcel continued. "Klaus and I had a talk last night and he asked that we be more kind to Finn and...well, Kol seems pretty on board with the whole thing. What were you saying, Kol? Something about a hunting trip?"
"No," Kol quickly stated staring daggers at Marcel. "I don't believe I said anything of the sort, mate. You must've misheard."
"No, no, I'm pretty sure it was a hunting trip. Don't you remember?" Marcel's smile widened with every second as Kol shook his head silently urging his friend to cease with his game. "You said the best way to promote sibling bonding is for the two of you to go off together like you used to do when you were kids. Y'know, stuck in the woods for three days just the two of you, bond over a campfire, tell scary stories."
Elijah shook his head. "We couldn't possibly allow you two to go out hunting alone. Niklaus and I will join you."
Kol's eyes widened in shock and Marcel couldn't help the laugh that escaped his mouth.
"And we should do it as soon as possible. The tension between us all has gone on far too long already. We'll make plans for Friday. I need time to prep all of Izzy's lunches and snacks for her training with Finn. At least three days worth."
Marcel brought his fist up to his mouth to hide his broadening smile as dread covered Kol's face.
"No, Elijah," Kol interrupted his brother's plans. "It's...not that serious. I'll just keep thinking of ways to try to get along with Finn."
"No, I think the trip is a sound idea for fostering brotherly affection," Elijah declared, patting Kol's back. "Rebekah, Hayley, and Freya will be able to handle the kids alone while the five of us are gone"
Marcel's laughter slowly faded as she silently calculated how many Mikaelsons were supposed to go on the trip vs. the number of Mikaelsons Elijah counted.
"Five," he asked with a raised eyebrow.
Elijah nodded at Marcel. "You, Klaus, Kol, Finn, and myself."
"I'm going? I thought this was just a 'brothers' thing."
"You've been aching for us to see you as a brother for the last two hundred years, Marcellus. Consider this official invitation. Finn currently has no strong bonds with any of us. After this trip, we will be one step closer to having an unshakable brotherhood."
Kol scoffed, seeing the trip with his siblings as more of an additional punishment than a weekend of fun.
Marcel's eyed Elijah with contemplation. He knew Elijah still saw him as the boy he was two hundred years ago, just like his father. The difference between the two being, his father simply doted on him while Elijah tended to be more patronizing. As much as Marcel wanted for Elijah to see him as a brother, Marcel knew there was no way he would get through a weekend trapped with Finn, Kol, and Elijah and come out unscathed.
And then he realized that Klaus and Elijah gone for the weekend was exactly what he needed. Then he could go check out Tyler's lead on his own.
"Um...that's alright actually," Marcel slapped his hand playfully on Elijah's shoulder. "I'm okay with just being Klaus's son for a little bit longer."
Elijah sighed in exasperation. "This is not a negotiation or a discussion, Marcellus. We're all going on the hunting trip. Now both of you go back to your rooms and don't come back out again til breakfast is ready."
Kol and Marcel trekked upstairs shooting heated glares at each other. Once at the top of the staircase and out of Elijah's sight, Kol gave Marcel's shoulder a light nudge.
"What do you think you're doing, mate? A hunting trip? That's the best excuse you could think of?"
Marcel dragged his feet up the second flight of stairs, dreading the thought of picnicking with Finn. "I didn't think Elijah would drag me along."
"Yeah, well, serves your right."
-M-
"You're wearing that?" Elijah eyed Kol from his head to his toes with a look of disbelief.
Kol wore a pair of waterproof sandals, blue swim trunks, and dark-tinted shades and carried nothing but large beach bag
Kol smiled, stretching his arms out as if to say he didn't need anything else. "I told you, I am through with hunting, big brother. I'm going to spend half of my weekend in the lake. And the other half basking in the sun. Got a change of trunks and a beach towel in here because that is all I will be needing this weekend"
"This is a hunting trip with your brothers, not a day at the lake," Elijah scolded. "Now go pack for real."
With a huff, Kol sped back into the Compound.
Marcel loaded the third basket of food into the back of Klaus's trunk. Elijah said they would hunt for whatever meat they at that weekend but he still wanted to bring enough fruits and vegetables to keep their diet varied.
"Do we really have to do this?" Marcel groaned to Niklaus as his father slid in the cool of blood bags that was to last them the weekend.
"Elijah thinks it will help bring us together," said Klaus as he closed the trunk. "I'm inclined to believe him."
"You always wanna believe him. Y'know, sometimes he's wrong. Like he was twelve years ago."
Klaus held back a shudder as he thought about that dark bridge. His gut wrenched at the thought. The memory of his son's injustice made him want to give in to his petulant pouting. But he knew this time Elijah was right. He knew his brother's judgment was often right but in a thousand years, even the noblest of men falter sometimes.
Turning back to Marcel, Klaus placed his hand on his shoulder and said, "It's one weekend. We must attempt to extend our fraternal bonds to Finn, and you and Kol must stop pouting like spoiled Princes for eight hours in order to do so."
Marcel shrugged Klaus's hand off of his shoulder. "Fine. But I'm not riding in the car with him."
"No, he'll ride with me."
Marcel's eyebrows shot up in shock. "With you? As in...you and Finn in one car and Kol, Elijah, and I in the other?"
Klaus nodded, staring back at the Compound entrance. Finn stood in the doorway next to Freya, tense. Klaus leaned against the side of the car, examining his brother as if expecting a sign to in front of Finn saying whether he was truly trustworthy or not.
"If Finn is to be my brother, I have to be sure that I can trust him around Hope. And that means spending as much time with him as possible."
Marcel smiled at the hope hidden in his father's eyes, hope he was sure Finn couldn't see past Niklaus's steady glare but hope Marcel looked for whenever he was afraid.
"You really are trying, aren't you?" Marcel asked. Then, throwing his hands up, he said, "Alright, I'll guess I'll try too. If only for Hope's sake."
Klaus placed his hand comfortingly against Marcel's neck, proud that he'd gotten through to him.
"Go hurry Kol along, would you. The precious Prince may have gotten distracted saying his final farewells to Davina."
Marcel groaned to himself as he walked away. "I hope I don't catch them in the middle of 'saying goodbye'."
Finn stood closer to Freya, hoping to use his sister as a shield to hide from Niklaus's eyes moved from Marcel walking into the Compound to him.
"Why is he staring at me like that?" Finn muttered to Freya.
Freya followed Finn's sight down to Klaus standing by the car. She couldn't tell by Klaus's stare what he was thinking but she trusted Klaus and Elijah.
She was against the hunting trip when Elijah first proposed it, mostly because he was so resolute on his stand that she not go with them. Freya and Finn already had a nearly unbreakable bond. And, as hard as his little sister tries to play, Elijah knew Rebekah was naturally trusting so in the weeks since Finn's arrival, she was the only sibling beside Freya the boy felt an ounce of joy around.
Elijah wanted Finn to feel the same way about the rest of his siblings and he felt if Freya were to go Finn would never leave her side and his relationship with the rest of them would remain the same. She wanted nothing more than for their relationship to grow as well. She knew, if Elijah and Klaus could see the Finn she saw, they would learn to love him as much as she did.
Freya knelt in front of Finn, blocking his view of Klaus. "Hey," she brushed a lock of his brown hair from his forehead. "It's going to be fun, trust me. Elijah and Niklaus promised to be fair."
"I'm sure they've always thought they've been 'fair' with me. But our definition of the word differs."
"Hey," Freya placed her hand on Finn's cheek, forcing him to look her in the eyes. "This hasn't been an easy life for any of us but we are all trying to be better. You have to try too."
"What if something happens with my mark and-and I need you to stabilize me."
"You're going to be fine," she continued calmly. "Your condition has been stable for weeks. Besides, you're only going to be an hour away, and with our brother's vampire speed, if something happens, they'll have you back to me like that-" Freya snapped her fingers for emphasis. "I've also instructed Elijah to keep a close eye on you. He can't give you your diagnostic tests, but he will be giving you two physical exams a day and sending me the results. I promise you're going to be absolutely fine."
Finn's lip quivered. "Wh-what if...this is a trick. What if...when I get to the lake, they dagger me and hide my body so you'll never find it."
"It's not a trick, brother," Freya pulled Finn into her arms. "I watched Klaus destroy the last of the white oak ash myself. It's gone forever. You are never going to be daggered again."
Finn squeezed Freya, hoping that she was right.
Marcel entered the courtyard to see Hope carrying a large leather chest in front of Kol as he strolled slowly behind her, peering out into the courtyard above his expensive shades as he carried a black bag over one shoulder. He wore his newly strung bow over his chest, the soft cotton of his button-up shirt protecting his skin from the cut of the synthetic string. His strapped his quiver onto the belt loop of his pleated shorts.
He had no intention of actually hunting. The way Marcel described the cabin to him over the past week, he knew that he would find every excuse to stay indoors and enjoy the amenities, he only brought his bow and quiver along so he could stop hearing Elijah's mouth about him being unprepared.
"It's not that I'm jealous or anything," Hope continued to rant. "I just don't think it's fair. The five of you get to go off for a whole weekend."
"Trust me, love, I'm as upset about the whole thing as you are."
Hope dropped the chest in front of Marcel's feet at the bottom of the staircase.
Glaring up to Kol, Marcel said, "Why are you making her carry your chest."
"I'm not making her," Kol answered plainly. "I think she's doing it for fun."
"I want to prove to dad just how strong I am," said Hope. She lifted the chest again, proving as her arms remained stiff that she could carry as much as a fully grown deer. Setting the chest back down, Hope said, "Try to lift it."
Marcel gave the chest a courtesy push with his foot and was shocked when the thing didn't budge.
"What's in here?"
"One hundred and fifty pounds of books. If that doesn't prove I'm strong enough to go hunting, nothing will."
"Sweetheart, it's not because Klaus doesn't think you're strong enough. We all know you're pretty strong. This is just a bonding trip. If the five of us are going to work together, we have to learn to get along together."
"But why can't I come?"
"You're just...you're too young."
"Finn is just a kid too!"
"You know what I mean, Hope."
"No I don't," she stomped, tears threatening to break her sullen scowl. "It's not fair. Daddy always treats you like his favorite."
Marcel looked to Kol with wide eyes and Kol simply smirked. "Don't look at me. I'm his least favorite. I've got no advice for you."
Marcel stammered, "He...I'm not...Klaus doesn't have favorites."
Hope sped upstairs as her tears finally began to fall.
Slapping Kol's chest, Marcel barked, "What was that about?"
"What? Was I supposed to lie to her?"
"Klaus doesn't have a favorite."
Kol rolled his eyes as he started walking to the courtyard exit. "Two hundred years old and still so naive."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Kol gave a half-smile. "Nothing at all, mate."
Marcel stopped Kol with a hand against his chest. "Whatever problem you have with me, I need you to get over it I have a plan."
Kol narrowed his eyes. "A plan for what?"
"A plan to sniff out our lead from Tyler Lockwood."
Kol cut his eyes at the courtyard door, afraid Klaus or Elijah would hear. Since no one came barging through the opening in a rage, he assumed they were both preoccupied. Still, grabbing Marcel by the forearm, he dragged him to the nearest corridor.
"That is not 'our' lead, mate. That's yours, and considering who it's coming from, I would hardly call it a lead at all."
"We won't know for sure until we go there ourselves and find out. At the end of the second day, I'm going to fake a mild emergency to go home early."
"You don't think Klaus would want to tag along with his precious, distraught Marcellus during an emergency."
Marcel sneered at Kol's taunting but continued, "I'm going to say it's an emergency with Lora. No way Klaus is going to want to get involved with her business."
"Why not just fake it now, save us the terror of two days."
"Because then they'll just cancel the whole trip and my plan won't work. I need just three hours alone to check in on the lead. An hour to get there, an hour to snoop around, and an hour to get back. So I'm going to pretend to be sick and tell Klaus, Josh is going to pick me up from the cabin and bring me back home while the four of you finish enjoying your last night."
"You're dragging Josh into this."
"Of course not. I'm just going to speed out of the woods, compel away the first car I see and then go alone since you're too chicken to go with me. I'm going to conveniently 'leave' my phone at the cabin just in case Klaus decides to 'check-in' on me during."
"So you're going to lie to them again."
"Of course I'm going to lie to them," Marcel all but yelled. "It's not like either of them is ever gonna go to Josh for confirmation. As soon as I check out the vamp hideout, I'll come back to the Compound - long before you guys even wake up."
"This is a stupid idea," Kol stated. "What if those vampires catch you? I guarantee they're going to hold you for more than an hour."
"Then come with me and make sure I don't get caught."
Kol scowled at Marcel's request. "Your entire plan is asinine because you have put your trust in a Mystic Falls vamp. I'm not going to be a part of it."
Before Marcel could make another argument, Kol spun around and started marching to the door.
"Don't tell Klaus and Elijah," Marcel called behind Kol.
Kol said nothing else, stepping out into the sun to show Elijah he was now prepared to go hunting.
Elijah stared at the flimsy bag over his brother's shoulder, sure that it didn't carry nearly enough supplies as he would need for the trip.
"That's all you want to bring?"
Kol strolled over to Elijah, opened the backdoor, and tossing his bag into the car. Before Kol could get in, Elijah grabbed him forced Kol to face him.
"Remind me what we've discussed about your attitude?"
"I don't want to go on a trip with that little monster," Kol growled. "With him around, I'll be switched three times before we light the campfire."
Elijah narrowed his eyes at Kol. "You have an unfortunate, yet traditionally repetitive, record of two switchings in one day. Let's try not to exceed that any day this weekend, okay, brother?"
Kol groaned as he ducked into the backseat. "Yes, Elijah."
-M-
Finn stared silently at the book on his lap as he and Niklaus road alone behind Elijah's car. With a deep breath, he closed the cover.
"Finished already," Klaus asked, finally finding a way to start a conversation with his brother.
Finn was silent for a moment longer before saying, "Apparently...I can't read with the car moving without getting nauseated."
"That's...unfortunate. What are you reading?"
A grimoire Freya collected from a witch in the 12th-century."
"Any reason in particular?"
"Um...no. I just...like reading grimoires."
"Do you miss being a witch?"
Finn froze at the question. He did miss being a witch but he was certain Niklaus was trying to trick him in some way.
"I only ask because you seemed to really enjoy it that last go-round."
Finn shrunk further down in his seat. He knew riding with Klaus was going to be a nightmare but his other option was being trapped in a car with Kol and Marcel for an hour.
"I've apologized," Finn mumbled. "What is it Elijah used to always say to our brother? Once you're punished and you've apologized, you're forgiven. I've been punished. I've apologized. Wh-when is it my turn to be forgiven."
Finn flinched as something dropped on top of his head. He looked over to see Klaus's arm extended, his hand on Finn's head, and his eyes still staring straight ahead at Elijah's car driving in front of them.
"I do forgive you, brother. This weekend is about growing trust. Do you trust me?"
Finn stammered out everything but an answer, afraid to answer that question.
"You can be honest," Klaus insisted. "I'll be honest with you: No. I don't. But I want to. I want to be able to let my guard down around you like I do Elijah, without fear. And that's why this hunting trip is important."
Finn arched his eyebrow, unsure why his brothers insisted the trip was so important. Their brotherhood was never any better when they went hunting with their father. He remembered the few times he was allowed to go with his father and siblings on a week-long excursion for meat during the winter. Mikael would always end they yelling or beating one of them, especially Niklaus, and the others would just stand by and watch, afraid of being next.
"How is this supposed to help," Finn asked. "You think just because I can trust you with a gun, I should be able to trust you implicitly?"
"No. The point of this weekend is not about the guns. Or about the hunting, for that matter. Elijah started these hunting trips centuries ago as a way to quell the strife in Kol before he became out of control. I guess I should tell you what you should expect when we get to the lake."
Finn sat up in the seat, intrigued.
"The reason Marcel and Kol have been so nervous about the trip is that they know that there are certain rules and expectations during the trip and if those expectations are not met, there will be swift and immediate chastisement."
"Ch-chastisement? Do you mean..."
Niklaus nodded, knowing exactly what Finn's fear was. "There are three rules.
"1. Stay within ten-yards of me or Elijah at all times. If you wander off, when we find you, you will be thrashed where you are and again before we extinguish the campfire for the night.
"2. You will do whatever we say without argument. If we tell you to go collect firewood, we expect you to go collect firewood, not gripe about it for ten minutes first. I am usually pretty lenient about backtalk, depending on how disrespectful it is, but Elijah will have none of it. And consider that your warning.
"And, of course, number 3. We expect honesty from all of you at all times. Boys who lie have the invaluable knowledge of the switch etched across their bare behind."
Finn swallowed the dry lump stuck in his throat. He was terrified of Klaus's promise. Tears began to prick his eyes and he didn't fight them as they fell.
"Y-you all just invited me out here s-so you can...beat me?"
"No," Niklaus finally took his eyes off the road to look at Finn. "Your punishment will never exceed your tolerance. And Kol and Marcel are not allowed to put there hands on you. We have warned them both the consequences of tormenting you in any way while on this trip."
"But you can. And Elijah. Y-you're going to take turns wailing on me until I break, aren't you?"
Klaus released a heavy sigh. "This is why we need this trip. We want to trust that you are all in with this family, never to turn on us again, even when things get hard for you. You need to learn that you can lean on us for anything. We are your brothers. We may judge...and criticize, but we love you always and forever."
Finn wiped his hands roughly against his eyes. "I-I want to trust you...b-but...how do I know...it's not just all a trap? Th-that...this weekend isn't just about you getting your revenge on me and then putting me back in a coffin?"
As Finn looked up from his hands, he saw his brother staring seriously back down at him. "You will just have to trust me, brother."
"What's the point? How does you smacking me around build a strong sibling bond?"
"This is our method. We've actually already introduced you to it. Spankings are physical and intimate. You, Kol, and Marcel are all strong enough to resist whenever you please but you're expected not to. However humiliating, however painful, you are expected to take whatever punishment we deem fit to give you. Your vulnerability is our sign that you trust us to respect the limits, never push things too far, to protect you and correct you as needed, and to fix you when you are broken."
"Wh-what'll happen if I don't submit to one?"
"This is the Mikaelson way, Finn. It has been for centuries. Freya wants you to be a part of this family, I want you to be a part of this family. But the spankings are non-negotiable."
Klaus looked down to Finn hoping that his brother's face would read something more than a teary-eyed, red-faced, pouty teenager but that was all he could see.
Placing his hand back on top of Finn's head, Klaus tussled his hair and said, "Don't worry. It's mostly fun. And as long as you stay close to me and Elijah, I'm sure you'll stay out of trouble."
Finn couldn't help the insolent pout that pushed his bottom lip further out. He hated it when Klaus or Elijah treated him like they were his older brothers.

The lake was peaceful and quiet as they arrived, as Marcel expected. A century ago, when his family first left New Orleans, he bought the lake and all the land surrounding it to preserve a piece of his childhood. It was surrounded by dense woods that the locals believed were haunted, thanks to Marcel allowing his old vampires to roam the woods, feeding on anyone who dared enter. It hadn't been 'haunted' since the Mikaelsons' most recent return but it was still just as empty.
"So this is it," Kol eyed the big, illustrious cabin longingly as he stepped out of the car. His eyes fell immediately to the jacuzzi deck sitting off to the side. "Marcellus...have I ever told you how happy I am that we're family."
"Don't get too excited, Kol," said Elijah as he opened the backseat and grabbed his camping bag. "We're only using the cabin to store food in. We're not staying there."
Marcel and Kol dropped their jaws.
"Why are you boys surprised," Elijah asked as he walked over to Kol, handing his brother his poorly packed duffle. "Tradition stands. We sleep under the stars and we eat what we catch. I certainly hope you are equipped for the weekend, Kol, or it will be a very hard one for you."
Kol gulped, looking to Marcel as if hoping his old friend packed enough for the both of them.
