Unable to sleep, Nicole had spent the last half an hour watching Waverly sleep. Her mind was still busy trying to process recent events and even though she had Waverly back, the realisation of how close she had come to losing her had overwhelmed her.
Slipping out of bed Nicole made her way to the window. Opening the curtains enough to look out over the homestead, she found the orange-tinged sky that signalled that sunrise was on its way somehow comforting.
She watched as the barn door opened and Wynonna made her way towards the house. Glancing over at her fiancé, Nicole knew that Waverly would sleep for a few more hours. She was exhausted when they came back to the homestead and was currently sound asleep wrapped in four blankets – plus a bonus blanket.
Deciding to join her future sister-in-law, Nicole made her way downstairs to the kitchen where she found Wynonna making coffee. "Coffee for two please."
Wynonna jumped, "Fuck, you scared the shit out of me Haught!"
Chuckling, Nicole grabbed a cup from the cupboard and put it on the table next to Wynonna's.
Taking their beverages outside the pair made themselves comfortable on the top step of the porch. They spent several minutes in a comfortable silence as they enjoyed their coffees.
Nicole breathed in, enjoying the aroma of the coffee. "You know, if the superhero gig ever falls through, you could open a café."
Wynonna ignored her friends comment and took a sip of her drink. "Not long now and you're officially my sister."
Making eye contact, the friends share a smile before slipping back into a comfortable silence, enjoying each other's company.
Staring off into space Nicole seemed lost in thought before turning to her friend. "I've never really had a family, a proper family before." Taking another sip of coffee before continuing. "Coming back to Purgatory was the best thing I ever did. I found the love of my life, but I also found my family."
Wynonna studies her friend for a moment. "You know, I never could figure out what Waverly saw in Champ. I mean come on!"
Nicole nods in agreement. "I know right!"
"When I first found out about you and Waves, I kind of thought the same thing about you."
Seeing the shocked look on Nicole's face, Wynonna continues.
"But I was wrong. People think I'm oblivious to things, but I see you. I see how you're always looking out for her, making sure she's taken care of, safe."
"Wynonna, I will do everything I can to make her happy, to keep her safe."
Finishing her coffee, Wynonna put her cup down on the porch.
"Speaking of, what did you do at the stairs to bring Waves back? Because even I know it would've taken more than just your magical lesbian vagina to get her out of that situation."
When Waverly and Nicole had returned from the stairs, they had glossed over the details of what had happened. Wynonna had smelt bullshit but had decided to leave it for now, knowing that eventually the whole story would be told.
Nicole turns away and brushes her hair away so Wynonna can see the symbol on the back of her neck. "Well, you are looking at the Angels Shield."
"What the hell Nicole?"
"I made a deal. I become the Angels Shield, be bound to the Ghost River Triangle and Waverly would come back to us."
Wynonna took a minute to take this in. "That sounds like some serious shit. Bound?"
"I'm bound to the Ghost River Triangle I can never leave."
Wynonna's eyes grow wide as the realisation of what that means for her friend sinks in. "Shit Haught, that is some serious business."
"Anything to get Waverly back".
Wynonna studies Nicole for a minute. "So does this mean you really do have a magical vagina?"
Nicole rolls her eyes. "I don't know. I feel the same, but different."
"I see. And this different. Since Waverly hasn't gone into full research mode, I'm guessing you haven't mentioned it to her yet?"
Nicole breaks eye contact as she shakes her head. "No."
As the sun peaks over the horizon, both women get lost in their thoughts.
"Haught you really need to stop with the epic stuff you do to prove how much you love my sister. It's making me look bad."
Nicole laughs, leaning over to hug her friend. Wynonna hugs her back, not for the first time, surprised at how much the redhead means to her.
"You know Earp, I always wanted a sister. I'm kind of glad it's going to be you."
"Well Nicole Haught, I kind of love you too. Just don't tell anyone I said that because I'll deny it."
Standing up Wynonna reaches down to grab her cup, "Come on, let's go wake up sleeping beauty. There's a lot to do before the wedding of the century."
The End.
