Chapter 1 – Letters of the Summer

Hi, Hermione

Your favourite Weasley here!

I don't know if the twins already wrote to you, but I told mum and dad yesterday.
Like I expected she didn't take it well. Thank Merlin, dad was there, otherwise she would have tied me to the chair, ha-ha.
After ranting for like ten minutes straight, throwing in a few swear words (I KNOW RIGTH?) she started crying. She doesn't understand why I want to move to Romania to work with dragons, but I just need to give her time, and hope she'll see that this is my dream job.

She certainly wasn't happy when I told her I would be leaving in a week.
Should've taken your advice and told her earlier, give her time to adjust to the idea.
It looks like I don't have that Gryffindor courage after all. They are already planning on visiting me there! She has been teaching me all these healing spells in case something was to happen; she's not leaving me alone for one minute. I had to duck in the bathroom to write you this letter.

I'm sorry I can't visit before I leave but I promise to write to you the moment I settle in. I'm busy packing and sorting everything out at the burrow as I leave next week.

How's camping with your parents going? Where are you camping anyway, not in your backyard, are you? Just kidding.

I got to go; mum is already calling my name.

Love,
Charlie

PS: I hear the twins already making plans on who to prank next year, so be warned!

HI!

It's Ginny here.

Will you be visiting the burrow this summer? The twins won't tell me anything. I'm going nuts, being the only girl here, and mum doesn't count.

Did you know Charlie is leaving? For Romania! He probably already told you at school. I can't believe my two big brothers decide to move to another country! I barely see Bill, now Charlie...

And now Ron will be going to Hogwarts, I'm going to be alone in the house with MUM! I love her to bits, but she will coddle me until I pass out!

Charlie told me you are camping! What do you all day in the woods without magic? I just can't picture it. Dad told me he went camping for a weekend with you dad, but he used magic to get everything done so that's not the same.

Please write back!

Ginny

Hiya Hermione

I hope camping is going well. We are currently visiting my aunt in Ireland, haven't done much because of the rain the past week. I hope the weather there is better, because being locked up isn't fun, certainly with my aunt Gerta.

Do you want to meet up in two weeks, I'll be back on the 20th, let me know kay?

I'll leave you to your trees, fresh air and books ;)

I miss you!

Katie

Oi, little Granger!

How's it going in the dark deep creepy woods with your folks? You should be heading back any day now, aren't you?

We nearly gave mum a heart attack with our grades, and we placed the blame with you, so hold on tight if you plan to visit because she is going to shower you with hugs. Don't know why, but she seems to think we don't have any ambition. :D

You missed quite a show when Charlie told mum and dad, I never seen mum so mad. It was hilarious! It looked like Charlie was thinking of running to Romania early at one point.

Oh, George is asking if you and your parents are coming to visit. Mum doesn't answer the question when we or Ginny asks, don't know why...

It's been pretty quiet here so far. Bill is set to visit in August, Charlie is getting everything ready to head to Romania. Percy is always in his room studying, at least that is what he says he does. Ron is bugging the hell out of Gin, poor thing. It's been raining for the past week, so we haven't had the chance to go outside. So, we've just been experimenting, you know us :D

I know you have plans with Katie and Cedric this summer but let us know if you plan to visit. Then we can put Gin's mind at ease. She's been asking about you at least once a day.

I leave you to your wood-ly ways. George says hi by the way. If I didn't put that in the letter, George would have my head, so here you go.

Rusty (& George)

Hi, Charlie

Camping is going well, only one day of rain so far. Been on a lot of walks, roasting marshmallows above the campfire. I even interacted with some other kids here, if you believe it.

I can't say I blame your mum, but she'll come around. She loves you, she just wants you safe (and close), but those healing spells can come in handy, so pay attention or I'll send you a book on healing!

And you are plenty courageous. You'll be working with dragons, for Merlin's sake!

Take your time, write me back when you're completely settled in, I'm so curious! You will do great, you're Charlie Weasley after all. ;)

And thanks for the warning. ;D

I'm going to miss you, wish me luck with the twins.

Salutari
Hermione

Hi Ginny

I'm not sure if my parents made plans to come to the burrow this summer, I'll ask.
And yes, Charlie told me a few months ago. Beside you'll be fine, just one more year and you can come to Hogwarts with the rest of us. Just find something to keep you occupied, like stealing brooms. ;)

It's actually quite refreshing, camping without magic, you should try it! Don't you live next to forest?
I'll let you know when we're back home. Tell everyone hi from me.

Hermione

Hey Katie

I miss you too!
Weather's been good here, only one day of rain so far. So perfect for camping.
Is aunt Gerta really that bad? Besides you can stand a little rain, can't you? You'll be playing/practicing in the rain for quidditch this year so, put on your coat and head out.

And yes! We can totally meet, then we can catch up in person. This is our last week here. I'll owl you when we get back to meet up.

So put on your rain boots and coat and of you go!

Love,
Hermione

Rusty, George...

Yes, we'll be going back in two days. Even though I had a great time and even met some other kids, I'll be glad to be back home, the mosquitos are eating me alive! Dad's been going on about his camping trip with Arthur, how much easier it was to start a fire with magic and what not.

Well, I would receive those hugs happily. And I think we all know your mum doesn't quite know what your ambitions really are, does she?

Quiet at the burrow, that's hard to imagine, especially when you guys are there. And leave your brother alone, you know he wants to work at the ministry when he graduates. So, of course he's studying, what else?

Do I want to know what you two are up two? And a little birdie told me you're already plotting pranks for next year, don't do anything to crazy, and make sure it doesn't involve me!

I have no idea if we're planning to visit. Mum and dad didn't really answer me when I asked. But I know they have busy schedules this summer. It could be that we'll meet up at Diagon Alley, but I have no clue.

And George, Rusty told me you said hi, just so you know.

I'll see you boys soon.
Hermione

Hermione rolled up the twins' letter and tied it on Errol's leg, the Weasley's ancient owl. She frowned as she looked at the bird, afraid it will drop dead on the way to the burrow. But the owl surprised her when she was done tying, spreading its wings and flew up and disappeared between the trees, into the dark.

Hermione always waited to send her letters until it was dark out, because muggles aren't used at seeing owls awake during the day. But that didn't stop any of the Weasleys, no. Every single letter that came from the burrow arrived in the middle of the day, much to the surprise and confusion of the fellow campers. She sat back down around the campfire and placed her blanket over her shoulders as she picked up The Great Gatsby. Her parents were sitting a little further away, chatting with another couple.

While she was reading, the noises, the voices of the others died down until it was completely silent, only the sounds of owls hooting or the rustle of leaves filling the air.

"Sweetheart?" Hermione looked up from her book to see her father leaning over with a smile. "It's getting late, honey. Better head in and put some extra bug spray on, they got you good tonight."

"When don't they?" Hermione grumbled as she rubbed her arm full of bumps. She closed her book and stood up. She gave her dad a quick kiss on the cheek. "Goodnight, daddy."

"Night, sweetheart."

And she disappeared in the tent. She sprayed it all over her body before she climbed in her sleeping bag, putting on the anti-mosquito light before she let her eyes fall shut.

"I'm dead!" She exclaimed as she let herself fall on the couch. They finally made it back home. When her mum opened the door, she dropped her bag in an instant and found the couch. Her parents chuckled as they dropped their bags in the laundry room.

"Why don't you go freshen up, dear?" Her mum suggested.

"A bath sounds like heaven." Hermione sighed since they only had those crappy showers to deal with the last two weeks. She pulled herself up from the couch with great difficulty and trotted to the stairs.

"Take your time sweety. We'll order dinner when you're nearly finished." Her mum called out from the laundry room as she put everything in the washer.

"Thanks mum." She called back before heading up the stairs.

Hermione came back down in her soft fluffy bathrobe, freshly washed and took her chair at the table as her dad unpacked the Chinese food. Her mum was going through the stack of letters that had gathered the last few weeks, checking them one by one.

"Oh, Hermione. This one is for you." Her mum handed on over, before turning back to her own letters.

Hermione flipped the envelop back and forward, trying to think who would write her the muggle way. Her name and address were neatly written on the front and one postage was stamped on the right top corner. She ripped the envelop open and folded out the letter.

Hey, Hermione

It's Cedric. Diggory, in case you forgot ;)

I thought I just write to you when you get home, since your camping spot was full of muggles, I didn't want to alert them and deliver a letter through an owl. So, I hope the letter arrives safely. I followed your instructions, like you said, so normally it would arrive the day before or the day you get back. Unless the postman is someone sketchy.

I hope you had a nice magic free camping trip. We can catch up when we'll meet to study.
My father is happy that I'm going to help you study. He thinks it will look good for when I'll go apply for jobs, ha-ha.

So, I just wanted to send you my schedule. You can look it over and we can pinpoint the dates to meet up. You can floo to my place, my mum's always home or I can come over to you. Your parents probably want to see me, my parents or house before you come over, so my parents told me to invite you three over for dinner.

Owl or fire call me with your answer.

- Cedric.

Hermione handed over the letter to her mum as she took out the second piece of paper with Cedric's schedule clearly written on it. Hermione got up, still going over the paper as she walked to the desk in her father's study to pick up the family calendar. When she sat back down, her mum handed the letter over to her dad, who was done unpacking the take-out food.

She placed the two next to each other and started to fill in the dates they could meet up.

"Don't forget Katie." Her mum reminded her as she looked over her shoulder to the papers.

"I can meet her on one of the days Cedric is busy." She looked up from the papers in front of her and looked up to her mum. "Can Katie sleep over sometime?"

"Sure, just ask her parents if it's okay."

Hermione grinned as she filled out the rest of the dates as her father started to load the plates with food.
