The Lost Knight – Wander'd Memories
That sound. Fel had heard that sound before. Hadn't she? There was a familiar ache in her head, it tightened as the sound came closer. Like a bell ringing in her ears. She grabbed her blaster and unlocked the door to investigate, just as a stormtrooper came across her in the courtyard. Her head felt like it was splitting open.
"Hey, Intruder! You're not supposed to be there." He then pointed his blaster at her.
Fel shot him in time, but the pain got intense, and she didn't see another stormtrooper with an electro baton came up behind her.
"Too slow." He struck her in the back, making her fall to the floor. "Should have left with the others Cheeka."
He was about to strike again when Fel felt a shock wave pass through her and she pushed the space in front of her with her hand. The stormtrooper flew backwards across the courtyard.
"What the… another Jedi?" He said, but Fel noticed that his voice was trembling.
Fel looked down at her hand as the pain in her head subsided a little. What was that? Jedi? She thought. That word. She had heard it before. Long ago. Hadn't she? Fel couldn't remember the past five years. All she could remember was Dr Rena picking her up from an escape pod in deep space. She drifted in and out of conscious, but Dr Rena told her that she kept murmuring It should have been me…
She had no memory of her family if she had any or how a young Togruta girl got into an escape pod. Or where she even came from to begin with.
"You're going to pay for that." The stormtrooper advanced upon her. Fel closed her eyes and shielded herself, only to hear a blaster and a loud thud next to her. She opened her eyes to find the stormtrooper dead on the ground.
"Comet, are you alright?" Dr Rena came out of a back alley holding a blaster, "What are you doing out here? You know it's not safe." She held out her hand which Fel took.
"I'm sorry Dr I just heard this…" Fel touch her temples. The headache was gone.
Dr Rena frowned, "You're getting those headaches again, aren't you."
Fel nodded.
"Come on let's get them inside. Before more stormtroopers turn up." Dr Rena said, as she took one of the dead stormtroopers by the legs, "I'll take this one, get the other."
When they hide the bodies, Fel and Dr Rena made their way to a little hideaway tucked in-between the side of a mountain and the outskirts of the now abandoned village. It was filled with tech equipment and scanners. Dr Rena was on the planet Zeffo studying the ruins of those who came before with her research team in the early days of the Empire. Fel was among them. She became a sort of mother figure to Fel, teaching her how to fix the scanners and program the droids. Fel became fascinated with the research that they were doing, feeling a calming presence being around old artefacts and ruins.
She had very good hearing, even for a Togruta, often times hearing a conversation from miles away. It annoyed people as they could not hold many secrets.
"How's your head?" Dr Rena went about the workbenches, pulling out boxes and searching through them.
Fel sat back watching, "Its fine. What are you doing."
"Patrols have doubled. Its too risky now, we have to leave." Dr Rena sighed, " It seems there is a Jedi here."
Jedi
That word.
"What's a Jedi?" As the word dropped of her tongue Fel felt the ache in her head coming back.
Dr Rena stopped what she was doing and turned around. She looked conflicted as if the words she was going to say was done with a lot of care, "They were protectors in the way of the force, but they became 'traitors' (if you believe the Empire) and were destroyed."
She stood up suddenly and then made her way over to Fel. "Do you remember the day we found you?"
"A little." Fel rubbed her temples. Now the pain was more like a dull ache. "You said I was wearing strange clothes for a Togruta… and that there was someone with me in the pod, but he had died…"
Dr Rena frowned heavily, "Yes I did. I'm surprised you remember what I told you." She went back to packing.
"One of those stormtroopers called me a Jedi." Fel said.
Dr Rena sighed and went back to one of the workbenches, pulled out a metal box and walked back over to Fel. "It'll be easier to show you. But if the pain comes back, we stop. Understood?"
Fel nodded and reluctantly Dr Rena held out the box to Fel. The headache began again getting stronger as Fel reached for the box. She wanted to know her history. Whatever is in that box, Fel wanted to know despite the pain.
Fel flipped open the box, there lay a handmade necklace with a strange symbol and a two white metal cylindrical hilts. As she reached out for the metal objects and the pain in her head came back. There was a soft humming coming from it along with distance screams and whispers calling out to her to touch and remember. Before Fel could take the object Dr Rena closed the box. Fel gasped and stepped back. Her breathing became heavier, and her heart raced.
"Comet, enough. You're not ready." Dr Rena placed the box on a table and took out a small injector. She then used the device on Fel arm. "It's alright. You're okay."
"What was that thing?" Fel sat down, pinching her eyes close.
"A relic from the past."
"A relic of from the Jedi?"
Dr Rena sighed and glanced back at Fel, "Comet I've tried to tell you countless times, but those headaches cause you too much pain. If I tell you and you slip into another coma… you might never wake up."
Fel looked down. Another coma? The object in that box was calling to her somehow. She often felt a hum in the back of her mind when she came into this room. It was connected to her and could possibly show her the lost years of her life. Fel bite her lip. The lost years.
While Dr Rena was more than enough as a guardian figure, Fel always wondered what her other life was like. Did she have a family who looked just like her? Or was she always alone?
"That stormtrooper called me a Jedi because I did something…" Fel looked down at her hand. She pushed him away but never touched him. It was like she pushed the space between them.
"Yes, I saw." Dr Rena said, she looked at Fel. Sadness clouded her eyes. "Comet I would love to tell you but…"
There was a distance sound of blaster fire and explosions, Dr Rena quickly placed the box into a satchel with other supplies and dropped it on the ground to get something from a high shelf.
"I'm sorry Comet but we are running out of time." Dr Rena grabbed a cloak and more ammo for her blaster, "Grab that coat we have to get off this planet."
"Why? I thought we outsmarted the patrols."
"Yes, but now there are others."
Fel took a coat that was sling over a makeshift bed, "But what about the tomb, the crash site and those artefacts. We can't just waste five years of research."
"We already were at risk staying when the troopers came and now, they're catching on to us, Comet."
Dr Rena grabbed Fel's arm and dragged out of the hideaway. The sounds of fighting were getting closer.
"How's your head Comet? Ready to fly the ship."
"I'm good Rena."
They made their way out of the village and down to the edge of a cliff. Dr Rena pressed a button on her com wrist, "Sandy ready the engines and unmask the ship."
A metallic voice came through the coms, "Right away Doctor."
Close to the edge of the cliff there was a sound of engines being ignited and slow a silk like substance retreated to reveal star ship attached to the side of the cliff. Radiant Marker V. Dr Rena pulled out a harness and rope and gave it to Fel.
"You first Comet."
The distance sounds of blasters were getting closer, but there was also a sound of an idling humming sound. Fel recognised it somehow, but she couldn't think where she had heard it before.
"That sound…"
"A Jedi." Dr Rena murmured.
Fel looked back to where the sounds were coming from. A Jedi…
"Shit." Dr Rena was searching herself as she cursed, "The satchel…"
She turned to Fel and grabbed her shoulders saying, "Fel I want you to stay here and wait for me. I'll be quick."
Dr Rena took off her coms wrist and gave it to Fel, "If I don't come back in 10 minutes, take off without me."
Fel started to protest, "What? I'm not leaving without you."
"Sandy will keep you safe, won't you Sandy?"
The metallic voice returned on the coms, "Affirmative Doctor."
"See. Take the ship and fly as far away from this place as you can." Dr Rena smiled at Fel, "I love you Comet."
"I love you too, Rena." The pair hugged and then Dr Rena parted ways and made her way back to the hideaway.
"Come back safe Rena." Fel called out. Dr Rena waved and then darted out of view. Fel sighed and lowered herself into the star ship, then made her way to the cockpit. There was a T-1 tactical droid sat behind the control console, better known as Sandy. Fel was told that they picked up Sandy from a traveling scrapper, who was going to sell her for parts. The new Empire had more advanced tactical droids, and they wanted to erase any relic of the clone wars. Sandy worked as the ships navigator and sometimes a medic (after being reprogrammed by Dr Rena).
"Hey Sandy." Fel climb through the horizontal star ship towards the cockpit.
"Good evening, Ms Kom." The droid turned and gave her an automated wave. "Everything is ready for departure."
"Good, good." Fel took her seat at the main console. "We're just waiting for Rena."
"The probability of Doctor Rena returning on time is less than 3% ."
"Yeah, she's always late, I know." Fel chuckled as she flipped some switches.
"She has a higher chance of being killed or captured."
Fel stopped what she was doing. "What do you mean?"
"The empire has taken the village and everything east of it. Doctor Rena has a high chance of being discovered now."
"Shit." Fel said, jumping up from her seat and made her way to the doors. "Keep the engine running Sandy. I need to make sure she's okay."
"But Ms Kom, the Doctor told you to remain on the ship."
"I don't care. I'll only be a few minutes."
There was a huge explosion that came from the abandoned village. It shook the earth and the ship, which made Fel lose her balance, and she hit her head on the wall. Within these moments, there was a tug in the force that wanted Fel to follow. She had to go and check it out; something within her wanted to go. Fel cursed, but got up and made her way to the cliff.
"Is everything stable Sandy?" She called.
"The explosion did cause one of the tethers to become loose, but the ship is still stable."
"Good, make sure it stays that way by the time we get back."
And with that Fel climbed out of the ship and made her way back to the hideaway.
