Chapter three:

The male orphan looks confused and takes a step or two back. "What?" He slightly gasps in uncertainty.

"And what did you think you were going to do?" Mello demands in a growl as he continues to glare at the male.

"Why?" Linda questions taking a small step forward. "Why did you move to protect him?"

Near smirks. "Seems things really are quite different here." He says.

Matts eyes remain on the male as he speaks. "Isn't it normal to protect the king in this world too?"

The Whammys all gasp in shock at this.

"So who is the queen?" Linda asks.

"No one." Near says in an honest voice. "I am the only leader."

"Then you can't really be a king right?" Linda asks a little confused.

Matts eyes flicker to Linda still with a glare. "We know him as our king and we see nothing wrong with it because there really isn't anything wrong with it."

"But to be a king-" Linda begins.

"Just leave it be Linda." Roger interrupts her almost sighing.

Matt turns his attention back to the male that Mello is still glaring at.

"By the way." The female orphan who accidently caused the switch steps forward looking at the three.

Near turns to her.

"You mentioned something about having wings." The female says. "Is there any chance you could tell us what you are in your world?" She asks.

The others listen and watch as Near watches the female orphan for a moment or two before finally responding.

"Back in our home world we are changelings."

The male orphan that accidently tripped the female orphan that helped cause this to happen now speaks up. "You mean like those beings that can take the form of an animal?"

Near sighs closing his eyes as if at least slightly annoyed at that statement. "I do not know where you humans come up with such things." He then opens his eyes halfway. "We take the form of people. Someone you love or our own disguise if we so desire and we feed off your love for them."

"How does that work? Why can't you feed yourselves with normal food?" Linda asks.

Near looks down. "This world isn't much different from our own it seems." He says almost solemnly.

This makes the others pause in confusion.

"What? What do you mean by that?" The female orphan who tripped asks.

"Exactly as I said." Near responds still not looking up then he closes his eyes again. "It appears that this world isn't as different from our home world than I thought."

"Why would you say that?" Linda asks.

Near opens his eyes and raises his head with a strong look on his face. "It seems humans will never understand just as I had feared. We cannot eat anything if it doesn't have love in it. Love is what we can eat and without it we cannot eat anything."

"How do you get this love that you eat? A magical item?" The male orphan who accidently tripped the female asks.

"No. We get the love that we eat by draining it from a human." Near explains. "It can lead to the death of the human we are draining just so we can feed ourselves and survive."

This causes the gasps and mummers again.

"But why?" Linda questions. "Surely there must be another way to get it."

Matt's hands clench into fists and start to shake that they are so tightly clenched. He even clenches his teeth a little.

"Killing someone is bad." Linda says.

And Matt snaps.

"No humans will ever truly understand or accept it! Why are we even wasting our breaths with this stupid thing!?" Matt snaps seemingly to the people around him. "Why even try when we already know the outcome of this conversation!? It's not like these humans are going to be any different than the ones back home. There isn't going to a difference so there is no point in wasting our breaths."

Mello and Near along with the others had turned to Matt as he snaps.

Near speaks as he watches Matt. "You have a point Matt but contain yourself a little."

Matt turns to Near with no glare or anything. "Alright. Sorry your highness. I didn't mean to snap at you." He gives a bow to Near in apology.

"I understand your anger." Near responds and Matt rises from his bow. "And what you say is true. We are wasting our breaths trying to make any human understand."

Mello nods in agreement.

"But you can't be sure until you've actually tried. You just gave up." Another female orphan speaks.

"We did try and it became obvious that we are just wasting out breaths." Near responds.

"But we can understand." The female responds. "If you give us the chance we just might understand."

Matt growls slightly.

"Just give it a chance."

These words from the female makes Matt snap once again this time at the Whammy's only.

"No! You'll never understand." He snaps with a growl in his voice. "You'll never understand what it's like! You never will because you don't know what it's like!"

Everyone turns from Near back to Matt.

Mello and Near seem to be just letting Matt rant this time while the orphans are a little surprised at Matt's outburst.

Matt's hands clench tightly into fists once again. "You will never know what it's like! So you'll never understand!" He snarls. "You'll never know what it's like…." A tear forms in Matt's eyes.

…..…

"Our best bet would be going to try to find a library." Mello points out. "And there sure as hell isn't one here."

"That means that we will need to find our way to the nearest town." Near says. "We should go as soon as possible."

The other two nod.

The three leave the cave and Near quickly scans the area to pinpoint where they can leave out of.

Near spots a path. "There." He says quietly then they move towards it.

"Your highness." A voice makes them pause.

Near turns as does Mello and Matt.

Standing there is Beyond Birthday with magpie wings.

A is a little behind BB talking to someone and he has golden eagle wings. He has light brown hair that goes to a few inches below his ears, sea-blue eyes and he is wearing a blue pull over hoodie with slightly baggy jeans as well as black runners.

"Are you sure that it's safe for both of you to go outside right now?" BB asks in concern looking at Mello and Near.

"Don't worry about us." Near says. "We will be fine."

BB looks hesitant but nods then heads off back to his lover A whose full name is Always After.

"Let's go." Near takes the lead again and the three head off out of the home of those with wings. He can't help but feel that this is a bad idea.
