Chapter nine:
In the orphanage Mello, Matt and Near are gathered in Near's room to try to discuss a few things.
"Alright." Near begins as he glances from Matt to Mello with both of them watching him waiting for his decision. "We'll split up and look around this place. Learn as much as possible about humans. I don't doubt it'll be useful. Not just for our world but also for when we try to take this world. They are not equipped to deal with us like our home world is. Meaning we could get very powerful by feeding here." He focuses on Mello. "Okay. Mello. You take the east area. See what you can find around here and learn what you can from anyone that you can. Spying or tricking them into revealing stuff." He then looks to Matt. "Matt. You take the west. Do the same and just get as much as you can. I will take a look around outside and see what I can find."
The two nod to this and after a wave from Near they head off to do their areas.
Near heads to the outside finding the backdoor. He spots some kids heading into the woods so he follows after them. He walks along carefully using his skills to stalk others through such areas even though he may be missing his wings. He crouches behind a bush just peering over it to watch as the group of three climb onto a tree. He sees them safely get over the wall that is blocking the way then hop down on the other side. He moves out of his chosen hiding spot once they are all out of his sight. He looks to the tree and climbs it just as the group had done. He crawls along the branch to the other side and looks down. He can see that the distance isn't that bad so kids can jump down from up here. He looks around trying to locate the way back in. He takes notice of a garbage can set up by the wall that if stood on allows access to reach another tree branch that would be harder to climb the tree to get to. He supposes that it must be where they get back in. He hops down and goes into the city. He glances around cautiously as he walks along the sidewalk of the city. He feels admittedly weird walking along the streets of a human city without a disguise on. He notices that no one really seems to care that he is out here walking among them. He still can't shake the feeling of being so exposed walking around with no disguise. He watches a car with sirens go on past then turn a corner. He then watches as cars drive on by sticking to the roads. "This city could provide a lot of information without having to worry about being exposed as a changeling." He whispers to himself with a slight smile then he continues onward. He will listen in and casually talk to others to learn as much as he can about how this city life is like.
Mello on the other hand steps into the library where a few of the orphans are currently just hanging out. He glances at all the books not even sure where to start with such a place.
"Are you looking for something specific?" A voice brings his attention to the right side of him. It is an older lady with pointy glasses that have a beaded string that goes from her glasses to around her neck. She gives him a friendly smile. "Do not worry. I heard all about what had happened. That you are actually a Mello from another world. I can help you if you need something in particular. Or perhaps if you're not really sure where to go around here."
"I wanted to learn more about this place. To see how different it is from back home." Mello tells her approaching the desk that she is sitting at. "What can you tell me about this world? Anything is fine."
"Well if it is information that you want I can do my best." The librarian agrees. "I'm not sure how it all works where you are from. But the land is divided in various cities and towns that belong to provinces and countries. Some places speak other languages. This orphanage was made for the gifted orphans that obviously have no where else to go. It was made by the worlds greatest detective. Roger runs this place though if the one who built this place gives any orders or advice then Roger needs to follow it."
"Would he have heard of what happened here that brought us here?" Mello inquires with a tilt of his head not sure if this would end up bad or not.
"He likely will have gotten a message about it. The bodies that you three took over because of what happened are actually the top three gifted orphans here. So he'll probably need to be notified. He might not do anything but he probably will at least hear about what had ended up happening. I'm not even sure that he can really do anything about it. There is nothing that I can think of for him to do after all. Though he might want to meet you three and hear about your world. Don't worry he is really nice even though it can seem scary to sit down with such a well respected person all over the world."
"I see. What else can you tell me about this world?" Mello presses to see what else she can share that he might need to take note of.
On the other side of the orphanage Matt finds himself wandering by the cafeteria. He peeks inside to see some adults having some small snacks of food. He supposes that things like that are what they eat here unlike what they had eaten back at home. He continues onward and pauses when he notices that the female orphan that had brought them here walks past him looking through some papers. He steps closer to which she lightly bumps into him.
"I'm so sorry." The female orphan moves back a few steps then turns to look to who she had run into. She blinks at seeing that it was Matt. "Oh. It is you. I'm guessing you might want to know how my progress on getting you home is going. Well to be honest with you I am seriously starting to believe that we might just have to take a chance. I'll have to try to remake what I made that did the trick the first time them throw it by you three. It may or may not work. It just might be our only way."
"And about how long will it take you to recreate it?" Matt inquires with a tilt of his head at hearing this.
"Maybe a few days at the very least. I'll want to do it very carefully and try to make it the same as the first one that I had made. It'll probably be the best bet at getting the same dimension so you'll get back to where you need to be. I'll probably also have to bring it all up with Roger before we go through with anything." She shifts as though a little shy about how uncertain she is about her ability to be able to correct the mistake that she had made.
"I see. Thank you for sharing." Matt lets her leave and he watches her go for a few seconds then turns away. "Hm. The king will probably want to hear about that." He continues forward to see what else he can find.
