8/15 Sunday

Soon after she woke up, she decided to text the others, making sure that they were still going to see Futaba.

Today, Yusuke, Ren, and herself would go and visit Futaba, hoping to get her more used to seeing them.

After confirming that the others would be there, she made her way over to Futaba's home.

When she arrived, she saw that Ren and Yusuke were already there.

"Hey, Makoto." Ren greeted. "Do you think you could contact Futaba?"

"We've been knocking on the door for a few minutes, but there's been no response." Yusuke explained.

Before she could respond, she felt her phone buzzing.

It seemed that Futaba would be contacting her…

Futaba: You're meeting with me here? Not Leblanc?

Makoto: Is that a problem? We've been to your room before.

Futaba: You never mentioned coming here again!

Makoto: We want to help you, Futaba. Please let us inside. It's rather hot out here.

Futaba: You demon…!

Makoto let out a sigh. "This is going to be harder than I thought it would be."

"When it's all over, she'll be thankful for everything you've done for her." Ren encouraged.

"You think so?" Makoto asked.

"Definitely." Ren nodded.

"I hear her coming down." Yusuke said.

They heard footsteps quickly heading towards the door.

*Click*

They heard the door being unlocked, followed by footsteps rushing upstairs.

"I… guess we can go in now." Ren said.

The three of them made their way into Futaba's bedroom… only to find her wearing a giant doll head while staring at her computer.

Makoto pinched the bridge of her nose, frowning. "Futaba… what exactly is that?"

"Don't worry about it." Futaba said, her voice muffled.

"Such avant-garde design!" Yusuke praised. "You have excellent taste!"

"Please don't encourage her." Ren sighed.

"Mwehehehe." Futaba snickered, spinning around in her computer sheet.

"Ok." Makoto muttered. "This is fine… L-Let's get started, shall we?"

After some convincing by herself and Ren, Futaba finally agreed to take off the mask.

Yusuke, on the other hand, seemed very disinterested, instead glancing around the room.

"Where exactly do we start with this?" Morgana wondered.

"Let's start small." Ren suggested. "We can just have a normal conversation."

"Yes, of course." Makoto agreed. "The simplest way to communicate. I'm going to ask you some normal questions, ok, Futaba? Try to relax and not think too hard about them."

"What do you mean by normal questions?" Yusuke asked.

"Just things like food or the weather." Makoto answered. "So, Futaba, what do you like to eat?"

"Organic ones." Futaba mumbled.

"That's not…" Makoto trailed off. "...really what I meant."

Futaba frowned.

"M-Maybe we could try a different topic." Makoto stammered. "So… um, some interesting weather we're having."

"I don't know." Futaba shrugged. "I don't go outside."

"Oh… right…" Makoto muttered.

Now she was feeling like the socially awkward one…

"What about hobbies?" Ren said, trying to salvage the conversation.

"She seems very into Featherman." Yusuke noted.

Everyone glanced over towards Yusuke, who had been fiddling with something for the past few minutes.

"Ah… superb." Yusuke smiled.

"Gah! What are you doing?!" Futaba yelled.

Makoto nearly jumped at Futaba's outburst, wondering what could have triggered such a big response when Futaba was normally so quiet…

Futaba ran over to Yusuke, who seemed to be messing with the figurines that she kept.

Yusuke had taken apart and rearranged her figurines into a bunch of odd poses.

"I thought to make them appear more visually striking." Yusuke smiled, proud of his work. "Some of their hands came off when I was moving them, but they are quite pleasurable to the eye, don't you think?

"W-WAAAAAAAAAH!" Futaba cried.

Futaba's arms began to shake as she gasped in horror at the state of her figurines.

"What… have you done… to my children?!" Futaba exclaimed.

"They appear to be quite shoddily made." Yusuke bluntly stated.

"Yusuke, you shouldn't touch Futaba's toys without her permission." Makoto scolded.

"Toys?! TOYS?!" Futaba yelled. "These are figurines from Phoenix Rangers Neo Featherman!"

Ren and Makoto exchanged a look. This might be what they were looking for.

"No… Yellow and Pink's heads… and Red's been hacked to bits… this is all your fault, Inari!"

"Inari?" Yusuke questioned.

"Your thief clothes look like a fox, and Japanese Folklore says that foxes love inarizushi, thus Inari." Futaba pouted.

"How cruel… naming me after food…" Yusuke frowned.

"Rghh… they were in the perfect poses too!" Futaba grumbled. "It was so much work getting them set up just right! You wouldn't know aesthetics if it hit you in the face, Inari!"

"H-How dare you say that to me of all people!" Yusuke snapped.

"H-Hey, come on guys, calm down." Ren urged.

They didn't listen, however, and continued to argue with each other.

"This isn't exactly the communication that we wanted." Morgana snarked.

Despite their attempts to stop them, Futaba and Yusuke continued to argue with each other.

Eventually, however, their heated argument turned into a passionate discussion about the themes and artistry of Neo Featherman.

It was very surreal to watch.

"I see… So their versatility allows you to recreate almost any dramatic scene you can imagine." Yusuke realized.

"Mm-hm." Futaba nodded. "Victory is great for action, and Neo's got the best transforming suit! It's so cool!"

"Fascinating." Yusuke smiled. "Art depicts a flash of inspiration, but models offer a much different means of enjoyment."

"Huh… I guess Futaba's having a regular conversation now." Morgana mentioned.

"It seems she doesn't have a problem talking to others as long as the subject interests her." Makoto said.

"Yeah, we'll just have to find out something else that she likes." Ren stated.

Ren glanced around the room for a bit before his eyes landed on a game console.

"Say, Futaba, do you like video games?" Ren asked.

"Yeah, why?" Futaba asked.

"Are there any new games that you're looking forward to?" Ren asked.

"Yeah!" Futaba grinned. "It's actually having a midnight release tonight, so I was going to have Sojiro pick it up for me tomorrow."

"Why don't we all go to pick it up together?" Makoto suggested. "We can help get more used to people and get your game at the same time."

"H-Huh?" Futaba gasped. "Don't set the bar so high!"

"Don't worry. We'll all be there with you." Ren promised.

"W-Well… I guess in that case…" Futaba trailed off. "Can I wear my mask?"

"I… think that it would be best if you didn't." Makoto frowned.

"Ok… I just have to be brave, right?" Futaba asked. "Then… why don't you guys meet me there?"

"Futaba, are you sure?" Makoto asked. "We could come with you."

"I can't just rely on everyone else forever." Futaba answered. "I-I can do this! I was able to get to Leblanc all by myself, right? This shouldn't be too different."

"I suppose that's true, but…" Makoto trailed off.

"Pleaseeeeee!" Futaba begged.

"I don't know…" Makoto trailed off. "I don't think that's a good idea."

Seeing that she wasn't having any luck convincing her, Futaba quickly turned to Ren.

"Pleaseeeeee!" Futaba begged.

"Me? Well, um… ok, but… try not to push yourself too hard." Ren advised. "We'll meet you there, ok?"

"Ren!" Makoto exclaimed.

"I-It's hard to say no…" Ren mumbled. "B-Besides, I'm sure it'll be fine."

"If you say so…"

Makoto couldn't help but worry that this would be too much for Futaba.

But at this point, all they could do was hope for the best…

After saying goodbye to Futaba for the day, she was stopped by Yusuke.

"Makoto, I need your help again." Yusuke requested. "Are you still free?"

"I am." Makoto nodded. "What did you need?"

"I was hoping that you might be able to help me once more with inspiration for my art."

"Of course. Did you have a location in mind?" Makoto asked.

"I do. Follow me." Yusuke instructed.

She followed Yusuke to a small church in Kanda.

The same one, in fact, that she had been meeting Hifumi in.

"Our prior theme of love proved to be quite useful to me." Yusuke noted. "After our enlightening session, I once again tried to paint."

"And what happened?" Makoto asked.

"Once again, nothing I put to the canvas was to my satisfaction." Yusuke frowned.

Yusuke glanced over to the church's altar.

"Before the Gods of art, I am but a lost sheep..." Yusuke dramatically declared.

"Lost sheep?" Makoto repeated. "Is that why we're in a church?"

"Indeed!" Yusuke exclaimed. "Our theme for today shall be anguish! I shall depict the anguish Christ felt as he bore the sins of mankind."

"I see. There's certainly a lot of other paintings depicting that." Makoto nodded.

"There are, but merely replicating them will not do." Yusuke stated. "Perhaps a believer would be willing to pose for me?"

"It seems that we're the only ones here." Makoto frowned. "I suppose we came at a bad time."

"So it would seem…" Yusuke trailed off. "Very well then, Makoto, you shall be my model today."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Fully clothed, I assure you." Yusuke said. "Being found stark-naked in a church would draw too much attention."

"Even so… this is a little embarrassing…" Makoto muttered.

"Strange… when I asked Ren to assist, he was happy to assist me."

"That… doesn't surprise me." Makoto replied.

"We must serve as an example to Futaba by stepping out of our comfort zones, correct?" Yusuke smiled.

He was probably just saying that to get her to pose, but maybe he had a point.

Do it for Yusuke, Makoto. Do it for Yusuke, Makoto thought to herself.

"Alright. A little posing then." Makoto relented.

"Excellent. Let us begin." Yusuke smiled. "Show me the anguish of Christ on full display!"

Makoto shyly raised her arms into the air, hoping to appear as if she were nailed to a cross.

Yusuke looked her over for a minute or two before sighing.

"This isn't working." Yusuke frowned. "You don't appear anguished at all. Try raising your arms higher! Bring your anguish to its upper limits! Like this!

Yusuke stood on one leg, raising his hands high above his head, and she did the same.

As they were in the middle of their poses, Makoto heard the door to the church opening, someone peaking their head inside.

"T-Togo-san!" Makoto exclaimed. "I-I can explain! This is just-"

Hifumi slowly closed the door without a word, leaving the two of them to their posing.

"What an odd girl." Yusuke commented, still posing. "I wonder why she left.

Makoto simply sighed.

"Ah, this position!" Yusuke exclaimed. "Now this is the Passion of the Christ…!"

"Yusuke, I'm not sure that-"

"Forsaken by his disciples, abhorred as a criminal by the public, pierced with nails and hung on the cross…" Yusuke continued.

"Wh-What are you children doing?!"

A priest walked up to them, a very confused look on his face.

"Ah, well…" Yusuke trailed off.

"We're so sorry!" Makoto quickly apologized. "This was just… an art study…"

The priest simply looked even more confused.

"I was attempting to depict anguish in my art, so I wanted to use the crucifixion of Christ as a point of reference." Yusuke explained.

"Hmm… while it is true that Jesus' crucifixion is a symbol of deep suffering… It also bears a much more positive message. One of resurrection and forgiveness." the priest explained.

"How strange… those ideas seem so contradictory to anguish." Yusuke mentioned.

"It might be difficult to grasp, but try to think about it." the priest advised. "Someday, anguish might bring forth growth or hope."

As the priest walked off, Yusuke paused.

"I just don't understand. Makoto, did you have any idea what that man meant?" Yusuke asked.

"Well… if I recall correctly, the Bible states that three days after Jesus' death, he resurrected and forgave humanity of their sins." Makoto recalled. "I suppose… that good things can come even from suffering."

"What do you mean?" Yusuke asked.

"Don't get me wrong, it's awful when people suffer." Makoto elaborated. "But… well, I don't think I'd be who I am today if I hadn't gone through what I did."

"I see… then perhaps this artist's block is simply an opportunity for me to grow." Yusuke said. "Thank you, Makoto. You've certainly given me something to think about. Thank you for that."

She could feel Yusuke's appreciation, and felt a little closer to him.

EMPEROR CONFIDANT: RANK 5

After doing a few more poses at Yusuke's insistence, she made her way home for the day.

8/16 Monday

After checking in with Ren, she made her way to Leblanc, where Ren and her made their way to meet with Futaba and get her game.

The two of them made their way over to the mall.

To their surprise, Yusuke was at the mall as well, checking out the electronic fans on display.

"Yusuke?" Makoto questioned.

"Ah, hello." Yusuke smiled.

Yusuke quickly started to pose, getting into the same pose as he had done yesterday at the church.

Ren quickly posed back. "Hello, Yusuke!"

"Marvelous." Yusuke smiled.

Makoto resisted the urge to sigh.

"Are you here to buy a fan?" Ren asked.

"No, no." Yusuke shook his head. "I have to spend my money on art supplies, so I simply came here to enjoy the cool air on a summer day. Are you two getting Futaba her game?"

Makoto nodded. "That's right."

"I see… so where is she?" Yusuke asked.

"I don't know." Ren frowned. "She said that she would meet us here…"

"You don't think she got lost, do you?" Morgana asked.

"Maybe we should look for her." Makoto suggested.

Ren nodded. "Yusuke, can you stay here in case she stops by?"

"Of course." Yusuke agreed. "I'll keep a lookout."

"Thank you." Makoto expressed as she ran off with Ren.

It didn't take them long for them to find Futaba.

She was standing by a police officer, frightened and seemingly on the verge of tears.

"Are you all by yourself? Where did you come from?" the officer gently asked.

"Ah… um…" Futaba whimpered.

"She's over there!" Morgana called.

"Did you run away from home? What's wrong, little girl?" the officer asked.

"Uhhh… ahhh…" Futaba stammered.

"Futaba!" Makoto called, Ren and her running over.

"Huh? Who are you?" the officer asked.

"R-Ren! Makoto!" Futaba gasped.

Futaba quickly ran behind them to hide.

"Do you two know this girl?" the officer asked.

"Oh, um, she's…" Makoto trailed off.

"She's family." Ren smoothly said. "I was supposed to pick her up, but I was a little late. I'm sorry about that."

The officer turned towards Futaba. "Is that true?"

Futaba quickly nodded her head.

"Well, ok." the officer replied before walking away.

"Futaba, are you ok?" Makoto asked.

"I'm sorry… I thought that I'd be able to do this." Futaba frowned.

"There's nothing to apologize for." Makoto assured her. "We were just worried. Did anything happen?"

"There was nobody I knew with me, so I started to panic." Futaba confessed. "I thought that my heart was going to pop. I got so scared… that I just curled into a ball. A-And then everyone started staring, and then the officer came…

"Oh, Futaba, I'm so sorry." Makoto expressed.

"Futaba, if you're ever in trouble, remember that you can call one of us, ok?" Ren said.

"…Ok." Futaba whispered, still looking upset.

"What's wrong?" Makoto asked.

"I couldn't even buy a game for myself… I'm such a failure." Futaba muttered.

"Futaba, don't think like that." Makoto comforted. "You've already made so much progress."

Ren nodded. "There's no need to push yourself. We can go at whatever pace you're comfortable with."

"Thank you…" Futaba mumbled.

"Do you think you'll be alright if we go with you to get your game?" Makoto asked.

"Yeah, I think so." Futaba nodded. "For some reason, I feel a lot safer around you guys. Wait… you guys must be my key items!"

"Key items?" Makoto questioned.

"Yes! Please, be my key items!" Futaba requested. "I'll be able to do much better!"

"Well, I suppose if it will help, I'll do it." Makoto replied.

"For reals?! All right, it's a deal!" Futaba grinned.

She could feel herself growing closer to Futaba, and felt the soothing voice that she knew by heart echo in her head…

I am thou, thou art I… thou hast acquired a new vow. It shall become the wings of rebellion that carry you to thy future. With the birth of the Hermit Persona, I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and new power…

HERMIT CONFIDANT: RANK 1

"Alright! Let's goooo!" Futaba cheered.

Futaba practically dragged the two of them over to the game section.

After they got her game, but before they could leave, they ran into Yusuke again.

"Ah, Makoto. I see you found Futaba." Yusuke noticed. "What happened?"

Makoto explained the situation to him.

"I see…" Yusuke trailed off. "I wonder… if there's perhaps anything I could say to her."

"Maybe so. You did get her to open up before." Makoto replied.

"If I think of anything, I'll speak to her." Yusuke promised.

"Thank you." Makoto expressed.

After saying goodbye to Yusuke, Ren and her brought Futaba back to her home before going home themselves.

8/17 Tuesday

Today, Ann, Ryuji, and herself would be meeting with Futaba.

After the events of yesterday, it was decided that the best course of action was to bring Futaba to a small restaurant. There weren't many people there, so they hoped that it wouldn't overwhelm Futaba.

Baby steps.

Ryuji and Ann stopped over at Leblanc, ready to go.

"We're here!" Ann greeted.

"What's bonkin', Makoto!" Ryuji grinned.

"Ryuji, that's never going to catch on." Ann sighed.

"Says you!" Ryuji argued. "I bet I'll get at least one other person to say it!"

"Whatever." Ann shook her head. "Anyway, where is Futaba anyway?"

"Mwehehe… you've done well to come this far…"

They all turned towards the stairs, seeing Futaba walking down… once again wearing her mask.

"W-Woah!" Ryuji gasped. "Shit freaked me out… that you, Futaba?"

"Yup. Welcome." Futaba greeted.

"Why are you wearing that?" Ann asked.

"Habit." Futaba answered. "We're going out again, right? Bring it!"

"Um, well, all right." Ryuji grinned.

"Great! Let's GAH-"

Makoto pulled the mask off of Futaba.

"Not looking like that you're not." Makoto said.

"Y-You fiend!" Futaba exclaimed.

Ryuji led them all to a ramen stand, grinning the entire way there.

"This is waaaay better than instant ramen!" Ryuji claimed. "You gotta try the real stuff!"

"I like instant ramen." Futaba mumbled. "I'd eat it every day if I could."

"You really should eat healthier, Futaba." Makoto advised. "You'll even have more energy if you do."

"Aww, come on, Makoto." Ann argued "It's summer vacation! It's the perfect time to lounge around and eat tons of snacks!"

"You're gonna get fat, you know." Ryuji pointed out.

"Shut up!" Ann snapped.

As the four of them started eating their meals, Ryuji began telling them a most likely exaggerated story.

"For real, it was freakin' amazing!" Ryuji exclaimed. "I had girls all over me."

"I… see." Makoto replied.

"What, are you guys saying you don't believe me?" Ryuji asked.

"Um… this is you we're talking about." Ann frowned. "There's no way that you're a chick magnet."

"Agreed. As a member of the opposite sex, I sense no charm in you, Ryuji." Futaba smirked.

"Guys…" Makoto trailed off.

"Heh… if you were really popular, you wouldn't be bragging about it." Morgana laughed.

"Why the hell are you guys always makin' fun of me!" Ryuji snapped.

The others seemed surprised at his outburst.

"Sorry…" Ann muttered.

"… It's fine." Ryuji sighed.

"A-Anyway." Makoto stammered, trying to change the subject. "You seem to be getting much better at holding conversations, Futaba."

"Yeah, you seem totally normal right now." Ann complimented.

"I don't really know what normal is." Futaba admitted. "But if this is what it is, then that's good!"

"Things are definitely going smoothly!" Ann beamed. "So what's on the agenda for tomorrow?"

"Why don't we have her help out around Leblanc?" Morgana suggested.

"That's a good idea." Makoto agreed. "We'd be nearby, and it'd help her get used to talking to strangers."

"What?!" Futaba cried. "No, no, no, that's too much! That's like playing life on Lunatic Mode!"

"Well, maybe you could just wash dishes in the back?" Ann suggested.

"Ren, Boss, and I will all be there too, Futaba." Makoto reminded her.

"I'd be mad if you weren't." Futaba grumbled.

"All right. Then it's settled. We'll all be rooting for you, Futaba!" Ann cheered.

"Ngh… I'll make you all pay one day!" Futaba mumbled.

As they brought Futaba back home, Ann stopped her before she could go home herself.

"Say, Makoto, do you have any more free time?" Ann asked.

"Yes, I'm free all day." Makoto answered.

"Great!" Ann grinned. "Then we can-"

*Buzz Buzz*

The sound of her phone cut Ann off.

"What?! Now?!" Ann gasped. "That's not good!"

"What's wrong?" Makoto asked.

"That was my agency." Ann replied. "One of their models didn't show up for a magazine shoot, so I'm being asked to fill in. Say, you wanna come?"

"Sure, I'll come." Makoto answered.

"Great! I'll race you there!" Ann exclaimed.

"Race? H-Hey, hold on!" Makoto shouted.

Makoto ran after Ann, the two of them heading towards the shoot.

As soon as they arrived, another model approached them.

"Ann-senpai! I'm so pumped to get to work with you today!" the model said. "After I saw you in last year's show… oh, I think I'm going to cry."

"I-It's no big deal." Ann insisted. "The event wasn't that big."

"Well, I thought that it was impressive." the model smiled. "My name's Mika, by the way. No need for honorifics. I may be older than you, but you have so much more experience, Ann-senpai!"

"A-All right, M-Mika… haha, it feels weird not saying it like that." Ann stammered. "Oh, but you don't have to use senpai with me. Oh, and, um… nice to meet you?"

"Likewise, Ann-chan!" Mika giggled. "You're so nice."

Makoto smiled, happy that the two of them seemed to have hit it off.

"Anyway, Ann-chan, do you think you could teach me to be a better model?" Mika asked. "Maybe you could tell me things like your daily routines, stretches…"

"Routines?" Ann questioned. "You mean like… singing in the shower?"

"O-Oh, is that all you do?" Mika frowned. "Then, what do you eat? I've been looking all over for a place to import organic green almonds, myself."

"Almonds?" Ann questioned. "I only ever eat those if they're covered in chocolate."

Mika's smile quickly vanished.

"Do you weigh yourself?" Mika asked, her expression eerily plain.

"Yeah, of course!" Ann chirped. "Once a year at the health examinations at school."

"So… you're keeping everything a secret from me, right?" Mika frowned. "I get it… it's hard to trust someone you just met…"

"That's not it!" Ann insisted. "It's not that I don't trust you… it's just that I haven't really given it much thought."

Despite her attempt to explain herself, Mika only seemed to get annoyed at her response.

"What?" Mika glared.

Mika glanced at the crew for the magazine shoot staff, making sure that they were in earshot.

"Ann-senpai, that's horrible!" Mika cried. "You're saying that you don't care about modeling for these guys?"

"What?! Ann-chan, you said that?!" the photographer gasped.

"What?! No!" Ann cried.

"That's not what she said." Makoto frowned.

"No one asked you." Mika hissed.

Mika turned back to the photographer, her expression shifting.

"I love this magazine!" Mika claimed. "Everyone tries so hard to make sure their product is the best…"

"Mika-chan, calm down." the photographer pleaded.

"Don't worry, we all know that you're giving it your all here!" the other photographer encouraged.

"Oh… but you guys all work so much harder than me." Mika replied. "And yet, I'm the one getting comforted…"

She started to sniffle, but it seemed obvious to Makoto that her tears were fake.

"H-Hold on…" Ann stammered.

"Ann-chan, we had both you and Mika-chan come down here as substitutes." the photographer admitted.

"We wanted both of you on the cover, but if you're not interested…"

"I didn't-"

"Don't worry, I can do it alone." Mika said, cutting Ann off. "I read the concept doc on the way here…"

Mika turned towards Ann, giving her a smirk.

"Y-You two faced faker!" Ann said in realization.

"F-Faker? You're so mean, Ann-chan!" Mika exclaimed, pretending to cry again. "Do you really hate me that much?"

"Keep it civil, Ann-chan." the photographer warned. "Anyway, are you ready to go, Mika-chan?"

"Of course." Mika nodded.

Mika and the crew left without her, Mika giving one last smirk as they left.

"I really screwed up, didn't I?" Ann frowned.

"I don't think it's your fault." Makoto replied. "It was that other model. She… was very manipulative."

"That's true… but it still felt like she saw right through me." Ann admitted. "She easily picked up on me not being that passionate about modeling…"

"Still, she didn't have to do what she did." Makoto reasoned.

"I know… still, I can't help but be a little jealous. Her acting skills were amazing." Ann praised.

"I suppose they were. Despite her behavior, she clearly has talent." Makoto acknowledged.

"And I'm going to be a great actor like that one day too!" Ann declared. "I'll take my failure today and turn it into positive energy!"

"That's the spirit." Makoto beamed

She felt a little closer to Ann.
