8/30 Monday

She awoke about an hour past when she normally did.

As fun as the trip was, it was very eventful, and she had been exhausted when she had finally gotten home.

There was only a few more days until school resumed, and she had already finished all of her homework.

So it was fine for her to relax a bit.

She felt her little phone buzzing, so she picked it up to see who had texted her.

Ren: Good morning, my Queen.

She dropped her phone in surprise, burying her blushing face in her hands.

Now that they were dating, she was beginning to realize just how much he had flirted with her beforehand.

Realizing all the hints she had missed was a little embarrassing, in hindsight.

After eating her breakfast and showering, she made sure to get a little studying in.

She found it difficult to concentrate, as her mind kept drifting back to Ren.

She didn't want to hide things from her sister, but it would probably be for the best to keep their relationship a secret.

Her sister would probably tell her that relationships were a distraction, and if she found out that Ren had a criminal record…

She shook her head. There wasn't any point in dwelling on that right now.

For now, she should focus on finding out the identity of the masked man.

They had no leads at the moment, but at the very least, she could ensure that when they did, that they would be prepared to face him.

The first step of said preparations was ensuring that their weaponry and armor was as best as it could be.

She made her way over to Untouchable.

When she entered the store, she was surprised to see Yohei there as well.

It looked like Iwai and him were in the middle of a conversation.

"And that's all that I know." Yohei whispered. "Now then…"

Yohei placed a fancy looking watch on the counter.

Iwai grunted, handing Yohei a lot of money.

"Pleasure doing business." Yohei nodded.

Yohei pocketed the money and nodded at her before leaving.

"What was that about?" Makoto asked.

"He just wanted to pawn off that watch." Iwai muttered. "Don't know where he finds these things, and I'm not interested either."

"What about what you were talking about before?" Makoto asked.

"Word on the street is that someone made a huge 100 million yen deal with a Hong Kong mafia gang." Iwai stated.

"How would he know about that?" Makoto wondered.

"He told me he likes to keep an eye on any illegal activity that happens on the streets." Iwai said.

"I suppose that makes sense." Makoto replied.

She assumed that it was probably because he didn't want anyone endangering the people at his camp.

"Anyway…" Iwai trailed off. "If I had to guess, I'd think that the person involved with that deal is-"

Before Iwai could finish, a man walked into the store.

"Tsuda." Iwai greeted.

"Ah, Mune!" Tsuda greeted. "Listen, about what we were talking about the other day…"

"Your order, right?" Iwai muttered.

"Yeah… so how long is it going to be?" Tsuda asked.

"That depends on how long it takes to get the parts in." Iwai explained. "I need to wait for them to come in, and some of them will have to go through customs."

Tsuda didn't seem to like that answer.

"Tell me, Mune… what's your son's name? Kaoru-kun, was it?"

Iwai paused for a moment. "Yeah, that's right."

"Well, if you don't deliver on time, I might just have to tell him your little secret." Tsuda threatened.

"Tsuda, please…" Iwai frowned.

"I wonder how he'll react to finding out that his father was in the Yakuza." Tsuda continued.

Makoto raised an eyebrow, looking at Iwai.

She had suspicious, but…

"Guess you could always have him sold again if things go sour." Tsuda chuckled.

"Fine. I'll put a rush in on your order. Happy now?" Iwai said, trying to maintain his cool.

"Very much so… I look forward to hearing from you again soon." Tsuda smiled.

As soon as Tsuda left, Iwai slammed his fist on the counter in rage.

"God dammit!" Iwai shouted.

"That… was Tsuda, right? The man you talked about before?" Makoto questioned.

"Yeah, it was. Sorry you had to see that." Iwai muttered. "Anyway, like I was saying, I think Tsuda might have something to do with that deal with the Honk Kong mafia…"

"Would it be possible to use this information against him?" Makoto inquired.

"That's what I'm hoping for." Iwai grinned. "Course, I'm going to need your help with that."

"Alright… but about what he said earlier…" Makoto trailed off.

"I'll tell you another time." Iwai promised. "It's a long story."

She nodded, hoping that he wasn't lying.

She found herself very curious about what Tsuda was talking about…

She felt a little closer to Iwai.

Hanged Man Confidant: RANK 4

After she got all the equipment she needed, she went home for the day.

8/31 Tuesday

Now that their current equipment was to her satisfaction, she decided to call a meeting with the other thieves.

It was imperative that they figure out their next move.

Thankfully, everyone was available to meet up at Leblanc, even on such short notice.

"All right, let's get talkin'!" Ryuji grinned. "Who should we go after next? Another big target?!"

"What about the masked man?" Yusuke asked.

"We certainly can't turn a blind eye to them." Makoto agreed.

"But we don't have any clues…" Ryuji sighed.

"I noticed a lot of people talking about us recently." Ren added. "Maybe the added publicity could help?"

"Yeah, there's been a lotta traffic for the Phansite." Ryuji explained. "The site even went down a few times."

"Woah… we're starting to get really popular." Ann commented.

"I took a look on the website and saw a poll for who we should target next." Futaba commented, before bringing it up on her laptop.

"Woah! It's neck and neck!" Ann gasped.

Ren read one of the names at the top of the rankings.

"Kunikazu Okumura!" Ren gasped.

Makoto was surprised at Ren's reaction. Did he know Haru too?

"Ren, you know about Okumura?" Makoto asked.

"Of course I do!" Ren shouted. "He's the owner of Big Bang Burger!"

Makoto sighed. She should have known.

"Man, if we take down one of these guys, I bet we'll get tons of fame and cash." Ryuji grinned. "But we'd really be on top of the world if we took down the masked man! When we do take him down, we should totally reveal our identities! We'd be heroes!"

"What?! You want us to show our faces?!" Ann gasped. "Well… maybe that would be ok."

"I suppose if the culprit confessed… the existence of the Metaverse would become known." Yusuke said. "Perhaps then, there would be no need to hide." Yusuke stated.

"Enough!" Makoto snapped. "We aren't doing this to stand out. People's lives are at stake. People… have already died."

The others quieted down, awkwardly looking away.

"Part of being a Phantom Thief is remaining unknown!" Morgana added.

"Um… so, about the masked man..." Ren said, trying to defuse the situation. "Do we really have no clues about them?"

"If I remember right, your older sister's working on that case, right Makoto?" Morgana brought up.

"She is, but she'd just get angry at me if I asked." Makoto muttered.

"So why not extract the data?" Futaba asked. "Does she have a laptop?"

"Yes, she does." Makoto nodded. "Are you…?"

"Mweheheh!" Futaba smirked, handing her a flash drive. "You can use this. It's got a special gimmick to extract the data!"

"I don't know if I could go that far…" Makoto admitted.

"Come on, Makoto, you gotta do this!" Ryuji exclaimed.

"Are you afraid of seeing your sister's thoughts?" Yusuke wondered.

"N-No, of course not!" Makoto insisted. "I… alright, I'll do it."

"You sure?" Ren asked.

Makoto nodded. "We don't have any other ideas, and we won't have as much time to meet up since school starts tomorrow."

"Wait?! FOR REAL?!" Ryuji yelled. "I thought we had another week of break! I haven't even started my homework!"

Makoto narrowed her eyes. "You do know the consequences if you don't finish, right?"

"Oooooh maaaan, I gotta pull an all nighter for this crap." Ryuji groaned.

"Ugh, you guys are going back already?" Futaba grumbled.

"What's wrong, Futaba?" Ren asked.

"What am I supposed to do when you guys are at school?" Futaba asked.

"What do you normally do while we're gone?" Makoto wondered.

"Wait for you to come back." Futaba whimpered.

"Oh. Well, if you're not busy…" Makoto trailed off. "I actually have a job for you."

"Ooooh, what kinda job?" Futaba asked.

"Would you be able to look into a few things on the Phansite?" Makoto asked.

"What did you want me to look into?" Futaba asked.

"I want you to compile all the messages sent towards the admin." Makoto requested. "And see if you can recover any deleted messages too."

"Hmm… yeah, alright, I think I can do that." Futaba nodded.

"Thank you. In the meantime, I'll… get the data from sis' laptop." Makoto promised.

She called off the meeting, leaving only Ren and herself behind.

"Did you want to talk, Ren?" Makoto asked.

"Yeah." Ren nodded. "I was wondering… are you ok with this? I mean, as cute as you look when you're flustered, I don't want to make you uncomfortable." Ren grinned.

"B-Be serious!" Makoto exclaimed.

"If you don't want to do this, you don't have to…" he promised. "We can find another way."

"Thank you, but I can handle this." Makoto assured him. "I don't like it, but… this is the smartest course of action. I'll get the job done."

"I know you will." Ren smiled. "You want to walk to the train stop together?"

"I would like that." Makoto smiled.

The two of them began walking to the station together.

It was just the two of them now…

They'd agreed to their relationship at a… slower pace, sure, but…

She wanted to do something, but what?

There was no way she could just… kiss him. Even thinking about it made the heat rise to her face.

She took a breath.

Baby steps, she told herself.

She glanced at her feet and spoke softly…

"Maybe we could… hold hands on the way?" Makoto whispered, barely audible.

At first, Ren didn't respond, and she thought that he must not have heard her.

When she lifted her head to look at him, however, she saw that he was looking away, a faint blush on his face.

"Y-Yeah." Ren muttered. "I'd like that."

She slowly entwined her hand with his own, the two of them smiling as they walked to the station together.

Occasionally, she'd see an older couple smile at them, which only made her more embarrassed.

They reached the train station a bit sooner than she would have liked.

"So, uh… I'll see you at school?" Ren said.

"Yeah." Makoto nodded.

They reluctantly parted, Makoto hopping onto the train.

"Thank you for walking with me… Renren." Makoto beamed.

She giggled seeing Ren's flustered expression.

Instead of going home, however, she went over towards Shinjuku.

She was hoping that a certain officer might be there, and that his loose lips might tell her some information.

Sure enough, when she arrived, she found a certain officer drinking at the bar.

"Mitsuhide-san." Makoto greeted. "I thought I would find you here."

"How did you know that I'd be here drinking?" Mitsuhide asked.

"You're always drinking." Makoto pointed out.

"… You don't need to say it like that." Mitsuhide frowned.

"Well she's not wrong, you know." Lala pointed out.

"Bah…" Mitsuhide scoffed. "Well, since you're determined not to listen to me, kid, what do you want?"

"Well…"

"Are you going to ask me about that Futaba girl again?" Mitsuhide asked.

"I-I… um…" Makoto stammered.

"Do you have any relation to the victim?" Mitsuhide asked.

"N-No… I 'm only interested because my sister is working on it. She seems stressed, so I want to h-"

"Didn't your father ever tell you not to lie to a police officer?" Mitsuhide pressed.

"T-That… he's my boss." Makoto admitted. "The accused is my boss."

"I see… so how is it that you keep ending up at the center of all these incidents?" Mitsuhide asked.

"It's just a coincidence." Makoto answered. "I didn't even know he had a daughter until recently."

Mitsuhide glanced at her a moment before sighing. "Alright, that makes sense."

She was thankful that he didn't press her harder.

She didn't dare take another chance until he had downed another couple of drinks.

"Does the name Wakaba Isshiki mean anything to you?" Makoto asked.

Mitsuhide immediately turned to her, an almost panicked look on his face.

"Where did you hear that name?! From your boss?!" He asked.

"Y-Yes." Makoto stammered.

"… The man who initially reported the incident… he was her brother." Mitsuhide muttered.

"Futaba's uncle…" Makoto thought to herself.

"My partner Kuze and I were there at the time…" Mitsuhide explained. "The man was ranting and raving… while Kuze just looked at him with a bored expression until…"

"Until…?" Makoto repeated.

"The moment he mentioned Sojiro Sakura and Wakaba Isshiki… well, I'd never seen Kuze so shocked." Mitsuhide recalled. "Kuze told the man they'd get right on it, and he told me he needed to make some calls."

"That seems… suspicious, don't you think?" Makoto asked.

"I don't want to think about it." Mitsuhide stressed.

"Well, I can't stop thinking about it." Makoto replied. "When my boss told me about the circumstances behind Wakaba's death, I couldn't help but think that it seemed similar to the cases of mental shutdowns and p-"

"Stop."

"Huh?"

"Just… stop." Mitsuhide sighed. "I don't want to hear it. Even if there is some sort of controversy, I don't want to hear it, and it's for the best that you don't get involved."

"And why is that?" Makoto asked.

"Because it's only a matter of time before you piss off the wrong guy." Mitsuhide figured. "And once you do that, you're done for."

"Why are you so pessimistic?" Makoto asked.

"It's because that's just how it goes." Mitsuhide shrugged. "You remember what I told you, didn't I? About police and politicians looking the other way on the Yakuza's crimes and focusing on smaller crimes?"

She nodded.

"Well, a lot of those politicians and policemen are criminals too." Mitsuhide told her. "But there's nothing anyone can do about that."

"But you're a policeman, aren't you? Even if you don't want me getting involved, why can't you do something." Makoto asked. "Isn't it your job to catch criminals?"

"No, our job is to keep the peace." Mitsuhide corrected. "Sometimes that means catching criminals and delivering justice… and sometimes it doesn't."

"And you're ok with that?" Makoto asked.

Mitsuhide shrugged. "It's just a job. I've come to terms with the fact that none of us are going to make any meaningful difference."

"And why is that?" Makoto asked.

Mitsuhide gave a loud sigh, ordering another drink.

"I… had a partner once. In both the police force and in life." Mitsuhide admitted. "Someone very special to me."

"Were the two of you…" Makoto trailed off.

"We were… together for a while." Mitsuhide admitted. "It was tough, considering how busy we both were, but we were able to make it work for a time. But…"

Mitsuhide sighed.

"Did something happen?" Makoto asked.

"She's no longer with us." Mitsuhide frowned.

"Oh… I'm sorry." Makoto muttered.

"It's fine." Mitsuhide shrugged. "It's been two years now, so I've come to terms with it."

A part of her doubted that was true, but decided to keep her doubts to herself.

"She was incredibly brave, and had a strong sense of justice, always willing to do the right thing." Mitsuhide recalled. "But she's gone now, and nothing's changed."

He continued to order drink after drink as he told her more about his thoughts.

"Lala-chan, g-give me another… another… drink." Mitsuhide muttered.

"I think you've had enough, dear." Lala said.

"I-Ish fine." Mitsuhide mumbled. "I knowsh my… my limits…"

"Clearly not." Lala sighed.

"Is he… going to be ok?" Makoto asked, concerned.

"He'll be fine, dear. I'll make sure to look after him." Lala assured her. "He gets like this sometimes…"

"I see. Well, if you're sure…" Makoto trailed off.

Before she left, however…

"H-Hey, kid…"

She turned around, seeing the officer glance at her.

She had never seen him look so tired.

"D-Don't get in… involved with all of this…" he muttered. "Don't know what I would say… w-would say to your sister if something happened to you…"

"…I'll try to be careful." Makoto promised.

She sent one last concerned glance towards Lala-chan, who assured her that he would be taken care of.

She felt a little closer to Mitsuhide.

Devil Confidant: Rank 4

She quickly made her way home, slipping into bed before her sister got home.

She wouldn't have her chance today, as her sister was pulling an all nighter at her work.

9/1 Wednesday

It was her first day back to school after summer break. Thankfully, she was quickly able to readjust to it very easily, although she would be lying if her mind didn't occasionally wander to the Phantom Thieves and their current predicament.

… And to her boyfriend as well.

After classes ended for the day, she had hoped to talk with Tachibana about the Phansite, but when she asked around, she was told that Tachibana was absent today.

Their talk would have to wait until tomorrow, then.

For now, though, she'd be meeting with the other members of the student council.

She was the first one to arrive, the others arriving soon afterwards.

Most of them, anyway.

"Do any of you know where Yasui-san is?" Makoto asked.

"She must be absent today." Kaya realized.

"Guess we'll have to fill her in later." Daichi shrugged.

"Alright then." Makoto nodded. "So what's the first order of business?"

"… The budget." Akemi muttered. "Something seems off."

"Oh!" Makoto exclaimed, not expecting him to speak up so soon. "May I see it?

Akemi nodded, handing it to her.

She began to read it over as thoroughly as she could.

"There." Akemi instructed, pointing towards the bottom of the report.

"Swimsuits and school uniforms…" Makoto muttered. "But isn't that normal?"

"The number is higher than last year's." Akemi stated.

Makoto frowned. Akemi… wasn't exactly the most talkative person in the world. So whatever he was getting at must be important.

"How much higher? A lot?" Makoto asked.

Akemi nodded. "That's right."

"Wait, hold on!" Kaya interjected. "What about the number of students? Did they increase too?"

"Not by much." Akemi shook his head.

Akemi gave them a brief comparison of the number of students and uniforms this year and the last.

"So it seems like we wasted a bit of the budget." Daichi frowned. "Sorry, everyone."

"Don't be. It's not your fault." Makoto replied.

"This kinda seems like an honest mistake." Kaya mentioned. "The number of uniforms and swimsuits are high, but not by, like, a super crazy amount."

That was true. If you had to guess the total amount of students at Shujin, the number would be a… reasonable guess.

"So who wrote that down, then?" Daichi asked.

"Hmm…" Kaya thought. "Well, Akemi's really on top of those numbers, so I doubt it was him."

"Yasui-san also knew…" Akemi added. "She asked me, and I told her."

"She asked you about the number of students this year?" Makoto asked.

Akemi nodded.

"Then I guess it can't be Chiaki either." Daichi deduced.

"… Hold on." Makoto muttered. "I don't know… if we can really say that just yet."

"Why not?" Kaya asked.

"This is just a hypothetical… but if someone knew the number of students, they could put in a slight surplus of uniforms, hoping that it would be written off as a mistake." Makoto theorized.

The others looked skeptical.

"That seems kinda farfetched, Prez." Daichi replied. "Do you have any proof about that?"

"No, I don't." Makoto admitted. "But no one's admitted to this, so I think we should investigate."

"Um… I don't know if this is relevant, but…" Akemi trailed off.

"What is it?" Makoto asked.

"Most of the excess uniforms and swimsuits were for girls." Akemi said.

"I see…" Makoto muttered.

"Did you think of something?" Kaya asked.

"Maybe… but I'd have to investigate. For now, let's focus on other matters." Makoto suggested.

They spent the rest of the meeting discussing other events that would be occurring later in the school year.

After the meeting ended, she decided to take another visit to Shinjuku, hoping to find a certain someone there…

Her hunch ended up being correct, as she found Chiaki with a couple of bags in her hands, wearing what she assumed was another one of her work uniforms.

Wearing her usual disguise, she slowly made her way over to her.

"Yasui-san."

"Bah?!" Chiaki gasped, surprised by her sudden appearance. "Niijima-san?! Again?!"

"What are you wearing now?" Makoto frowned.

"I-I-I could ask you the same question!" Chiaki snapped. "Are you going through some kinda punk phase or something?!"

"… Kinda?" Makoto answered. "But that's beside the point! What are you doing here and what's in that bag?!"

"Are you spying on me?" Chiaki asked, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.

"I heard a lot of rumors and decided to investigate myself." Makoto answered. "I also know that someone purchased a lot of uniforms and swimsuits… more than we need, I think."

"… I sold them." Chiaki muttered.

"You… sold them?" Makoto repeated. "To who?"

"… There are a lotta freaks around here." Chiaki muttered. "Freaks that will pay a lot of money for things like high school girl uniforms and swimsuits."

"You shouldn't be getting involved in things like that." Makoto frowned.

"I don't need you lecturing me." Chiaki frowned.

Makoto sighed. She thought that she had finally been making progress with Chiaki, but it seemed there was still tension between the two of them.

"Can you at least tell me why you're doing this?" Makoto asked.

"Why should I tell you?!" Chiaki snapped.

"Because I'm worried about you." Makoto said. "So I can't have you keep doing this. I know you said that you need it for your siblings, but isn't this a little extreme? If you don't tell me what's going on…"

"My family is in debt, you bitch!" Chiaki yelled.

Makoto gasped, surprised at Chiaki's outburst.

"There… Are you happy?" Chiaki muttered. "That's why I need the money…"

"What about your parents?" Makoto asked.

Chiaki frowned. "Not with us anymore. My little siblings and I live with our grandparents. My grandparents… are good people, but they're pretty gullible, and aren't very good with technology."

"Are they getting scammed?" Makoto asked.

"Yeah." Chiaki nodded. "Scammers would call them and pretend to be a relative asking for money, and they'd fall for it every time. Eventually, they had to borrow some money… and some asshole scammed them again."

"How did that happen?" Makoto asked.

"A loan shark lent them money when they were desperate." Chiaki explained. "But now they keep threatening us if we don't pay on time. But my grandparents don't make enough to both take care of us and pay off the debts."

"And that's why you need money so badly…" Makoto realized.

"Yeah. So now you know what's happening." Chiaki muttered. "So just leave me alone."

"Yasui-san, I want to help you." Makoto insisted.

"I don't want your help!" Chiaki spat. "I already let you trick me into accepting your money once. I won't do it again."

"I'm not tricking you!" Makoto shouted.

"Then why are you helping me?" Chiaki asked.

"When I see someone in need, I want to help them." Makoto stressed. "Please, believe me!"

Chiaki looked conflicted, pausing for a few moments before ultimately shaking her head.

"I can't trust you… or anyone, for that matter." Chiaki muttered.

"Yasui-san, please." Makoto pleaded. "I-"

"Just go away!" Chiaki snapped.

Makoto frowned, but did as Chiaki requested.

She didn't go far, however, instead hiding behind the corner.

A few minutes later, two men approached Chiaki.

"Do you have the money?" the first man asked.

Chiaki wordlessly handed the man a wad of bills.

The man counted each bill before smirking.

"Well, what do you know? I didn't think you'd get it on time." the man said.

"So we're done, right?" Chiaki asked. "That's all the money we owe you."

"Well, true, that is all the money…" the second man said. "… of the initial payment."

"… Initial payment?" Chiaki repeated.

"You didn't think there wouldn't be interest, did you?" the second man scoffed. "And with how long it took you to pay this off, you've racked up quite a bit."

"How much?" Chiaki said through clenched teeth.

"Well… I'd say about a million and a half yen." the second brother grinned.

"T-That's insane!" Chiaki cried. "And if the interest keeps piling up… you're just trying to extort us forever, aren't you?!"

"Come on, we'd never be that cruel." the first man said. "If you deliver a couple of packages for us… I think we'd be willing to forgive a lot of the debt."

"I…"

"Think it over, ok?" the first man suggested, before both of them walked off.

She watched Chiaki slump against the wall, glancing at the floor.

"Yasui-san?"

Chiaki glanced over at her.

"You were eavesdropping, Niijima?" she scoffed. "What, have you come to laugh at me?"

"No, of course not." Makoto insisted. "I want to help you, and I don't care how many times I have to say it… I'll keep saying it until you believe me."

"… And how do you intend to help me?" Chiaki muttered.

"I can at least get you a job somewhere less… seedy." Makoto promised.

"… Whatever." Chiaki sighed. "It's not like I have anything to lose."

Makoto led Chiaki over to Crossroads, walking up the Lala.

"Lala-Chan, do you have a moment? It's important." Makoto said.

"Of course, dear. You're not in trouble now, are you?" Lala asked.

"Well… not me, but a classmate of mine." Makoto clarified.

She explained the situation to Lala.

"Lala-chan… I was wondering if you happened to have a job opening for her?" Makoto asked.

"Hmm… well, normally I just run things by myself, but an extra pair of hands couldn't hurt." Lala confessed.

Lala called Chiaki over.

"You still in high school, dear?" Lala asked.

Chiaki nodded.

"Well, I can't have you touching the alcohol, but I can have you clean glasses and other things." Lala informed her.

As Lala and Chiaki talked, she walked over to the corner where Mitsuhide was once again drinking.

He raised an eyebrow when he saw her outfit.

"… Your sister would have a heart attack if she saw you wearing that." Mitsuhide pointed out.

"Well… what she doesn't know won't hurt her." Makoto pointed out. "Anyway, I had a favor to ask you."

"The girl I brought along is going to be working here." Makoto explained. "But there are some loan sharks threatening her family. I think they're trying to pressure her into doing something illegal."

"What do you want me to do about it?" Mitsuhide asked.

"Your job." Makoto bluntly stated.

"… I'll see what I can do." Mitsuhide promised.

She wasn't entirely convinced, but that was probably the best that she'd get from him.

As she moved to leave…

"Niijima-san… I…" Chiaki trailed off.

"No more tricks, ok?" Makoto said. "Not stealing and not selling things from school. I'll find a way to help you, I promise."

"I guess… I have no choice but to trust you now, huh?" Chiaki whispered, eyes downcast. "Alright…"

Now she was beginning to understand.

Chiaki had trouble trusting people…

She felt a little closer to Chiaki.
