A Door, A Key, A Promise

after Kingdom Hearts

by Alex Macomber

Above me the light,

Below me the black,

Before me the end,

And I can't go back.

On my left hand, my friends,

On my right, enemies,

On the outside, hardship,

But the inside of me—

Inside of these words

Lay the feelings beneath;

Hopes, fears, memories,

Desires, beliefs.

Now the end has arrived,

A great stone door,

With a great black keyhole,

On a great wistful shore.

The seaside of home,

And the raft that we made,

To travel the worlds,

As we sailed it away,

But this door mars the scene,

Scars my memories of you,

And of him, and of them,

Of that home we once knew.

Now, behind me, a voice,

Filled with reminiscence,

"Don't lose yourself

In fear of darkness."

And I stare at the door,

And it's nothing to me.

I remember my promise.

I raise up my key.

And the voice now, again,

Sans nostalgia this time,

"Don't hesitate

To cross over that line,

"The twilit line

Between darkness and light.

Just remember yourself,

And don't stray from what's right."

Now, the key in my hand,

Promise in my mind,

I open the door,

And I leave home behind.
