my take on Shikamaru is that he likes to believe he's just an ordinary ninja (even if everyone knows otherwise) and his ambition is to lead a quiet life. and Temari is definitely what he doesn't need if he wants that life - she's just something he wants, even if he thinks she's too far out of his league. ;)
note : based on Nara Shikamaru & Temari of the Sand, from Naruto
He considered himself a simple man
And really asked nothing much from life
Just to be free like the average man
With an undemanding and uncomplicated wife
But he was just no ordinary guy
However much he wishes to be
And as an undeniable genius
There was no way for him to live each day quietly
And then there was a daughter of the Sand
That he regrets having ever met
For she was as scary as his mother
Truly a girl who sharpens her weapon at sunset
They were from totally different lands
Separate worlds that are miles apart
She was trouble that he had to resist
Even as she haunts his lazy and unwilling heart
Because being with her may make him feel
More alive than he had ever been
But falling for her is just as futile
As his dark shadows trying to chase the desert wind
the last line was in reference to the both of them, of course. also, i got a few phrases from their profiles off wikipedia that i incorporated into the poem. shika - "live each day quietly", temari - "sharpen your kama (weapon) at sunset". suits them rather well, i think.
