What Now?
Kim doesn't see Shego for three months after that. Drakken remains in prison and Shego makes no attempts to rescue him even if they expect her to. Kim can't help but feel strangely lonely. She misses her fights with Shego. True, she still has her fights with the other villains on her roster, but it's not the same. Shego brought a certain flare to the fights. Brought Kim to the edge of battle, made her think on her toes. They had a mutual respect for each other.
Ron notices her lacking mood but any efforts he makes to pick her mood up falls flat.
"Maybe I should take a break from this spy business?" Kim suggests and Ron nearly drops his burrito when he hears this. His jaw drops open.
"Kim, are you feeling okay?" he makes out at last.
She pushes the salsa around on her plate. "I don't know. I just...High school is ending and I haven't really had a chance to focus on doing you know, normal teen stuff. I only have one year left, Ron. Then we're seniors and we have all this work we need to focus on. Like getting into college, prom, senior photos, etc. I don't want to miss that. Yea, saving the world is important and stuff but Global Justice surely can handle themselves for a year without me. I mean, they were doing fine before me," she finishes up, looking hopefully at Ron for him to understand her.
He heaves out a sigh. "Look, if it's really something you want to do...then I'm here to support you," Ron said though he didn't look too happy.
"What's wrong? I thought you wouldn't mind as much, us quitting the spy stuff," Kim said.
"I know I wasn't the best at it, but it meant us spending time together. And I liked that."
"Ron," she put a hand on his. "Not being spies doesn't mean we can't still be friends together," Kim said honestly. "We would have time to go to the mall, or watch a movie or you know, do normal teen stuff."
"Like sleepovers? Gossiping about boys?"
She laughed at this. "Sure." And that lifted her mood a bit, but she couldn't stop thinking about Shego.
What would it be like, doing normal stuff with her? Watching movies, laughing as they shared an ice cream? But...Shego was a criminal and Kim was a spy, even if she was going on a break. A much deserved break.
Two months later...
Kim zips up her book bag for the final time this school year, as the school bell rings and the students are let out. A whole summer of doing nothing, of just relaxing in the sun and goofing off with Ron await her and she's excited. Pretending to be a normal student was nice. She didn't have to worry about the world ending, she didn't have to worry about doing her homework on time. She had so much free time that she could actually finish that book series she'd always wanted to read. She also had time to watch TV shows and be on top of pop culture trends.
She and Ron got closer to each other too and Kim spent time with Monique and Wade that didn't circle around spy work.
Whatever Kim's usual roster of villains was up to, she didn't bother to look into. It wasn't her business anymore. Especially not after the note she'd gotten from Shego. We couldn't work together. Don't bother looking for me. I'll fine you when things are better.
What did that mean?
Kim was hurt by the first sentence but assuaged by the last. Shego would come for her when things were better. But what did better mean?
Kim shook her head. Whatever. No big. She'd hang out with her friends the whole summer, work on her beach bod and then prepare for her senior year of high school. And so that's what Kim did, sticking to her resolution ardently. If she seemed a bit down, then Wade and the others didn't comment on this, trying to keep her spirits up.
And then, when the school year began for her last year of high school, things took an unexpected turn.
A/N: In my mind, Kim's about 17 now and Shego's 25. I know Shego's older probably in the show but I wanted to make them closer in age in this story.
