Sunrise, Sunset
-OneShot-

Sha're loved the sunrise.

Daniel, arms wrapped around his knees, rested his chin against the rough army cloth and watched the clouded horizon.

When he got up early enough, he'd find her standing in the doorway, gazing in wonder and simple joy at the Abydonian sun, rising above the wasteland outside.

The first time it had had happened had been the morning after they had slept together. He had woken up to find her side of the bed empty and panicked.

What if she had decided she no longer cared for him? Had she left for good? What had he done wrong?

And then, glasses put hastily on, Daniel had seen the new sunlight outline her slender shape, embrace it, wrap it in warm yellow light; in that moment he had wondered if she was a goddess.

The archeologist hunched his shoulders a bit more, drawing farther into himself, retreating into the safety of memories.

One morning he had been teaching her symbols, helping her learn what the carvings on the walls meant. For no particular reason he had scrawled out the English alphabet in the sand, capitals and lowercase, and she had been fascinated.

'Dan'yel? What is this?' Her fingers had tapped the big A carefully.

'Oh- that's how my language is written. See, each letter stands for a sound, and when you put them together you get words.'

'It is… amazing.'

He had grinned at her in the early light.

'Not nearly as amazing as you are.'

'How do you say them?' she had asked, blushing.

'We have a song, actually, that we use to teach children.'

'Will you sing it for me?'

'I don't have the best singing voice…'

'Please?'

'All right. A, B, C, D, E F G…'

She had always wanted to learn.

Far away, the sun was still struggling, fighting for every inch that it gained. This was not a kind world, to try and keep it down so.

He had been doodling absent mindedly on the rough form of parchment, not paying attention to what he was drawing, when Sha're had leaned forward and looked with interest at one of the figures.

'What is this, Dan'yel?'

It was a heart.

'Ah- that's a symbol we use on Earth to show love.'

' "Love?" '

He had used the English word by accident.

Daniel could think up a good way to show her what he meant.

'It's how I feel about you, Sha're. That's "love".'

'Then… I "love" Dan'yel?'

'I would hope so.'

Her smile had been as bright as the rising sun.

'I love you, Dan'yel.'

'I love you too.'

Daniel felt the first warm rays dance on his face, the orange clouds giving way to the sun sullenly.

Hot. It was late, very late in the afternoon, on this world, and the twin gas giants were merciless in their blazing glory. In moments it would be night.

'I am sorry, DanielJackson.'

'You did the right thing, Teal'c.'

As he shifted, touching Sha're's face tenderly, the suns disappeared below the horizon.

'A, B, C, D…'

'I love you, Dan'yel.'

She turned, smiling with a luminous joy.

'Is it not beautiful, Dan'yel?'

The sun glinted off his glasses as he unfolded his arms and rose, turning to walk back to camp.

Sha're had loved sunrises.

And he had loved her.
