22 Furies and Monsters
Marcus and the others watched the bird fly overhead, but it didn't seem to want to attack them or anything like that. It simply flew in the air before moving away and descending down. However, Marcus was already very familiar with it.
"We need to move," Marcus said. "The rest of the Furies will be upon us. Follow me!"
Marcus then quickly ran away, with the three caught off guard by the sudden movement before running after him.
With his feet rapidly tapping on the paved street of this fortress, Marcus looked at his target, the mountain temple of the Furies. He had come a long way to get here, to finally rid himself of his slavery to Ares.
He had already taken out one of the Furies. Only two left.
"Marcus, wait!" Percy called out. The three of them were trying to keep up with him as best as they could. "Hey, shouldn't we hide or something?!"
"No point!" Marcus said. "If that bird is up there, they know where we are!"
"And just what is that creature exactly?!" Zoe asked.
"It's a pet belonging to Tisiphone, one of the Furies!" Marcus quickly explained.
"Well, that's not good!" Percy exclaimed.
"No kidding, Seaweed Brain!"
The four of them ran across the street for several more minutes, anxiousness permeating their minds. The Furies knew where they were and it was obvious where they were headed. So what were they waiting for?
The constant sound of their feet constantly tapping the road began unnerving. They expected something to jump on them any second.
"Look out!" Marcus suddenly shouted and turned around before tackling all three of them, letting out some surprised exclamations as well.
Right at the spot where they were about to be, a yellow and blue streak suddenly came from above and struck the ground, sending dust and debris everywhere.
Marcus quickly got up from the floor and took out his flaming blades. From below the avian creature arose a beautiful hooded woman with a crown-like object adorning her hood, a black, sleeveless ornate dress with a slit on the left side.
Zoe's eyes narrowed as her hunter instincts kicked in. Quickly turning around, she fired an arrow at the foe behind them.
However, the enemy from the other side moved her head to the side, avoiding a headshot. The other woman was dressed in some sort of dress/armor combination with a crown-like headdress on her head. Her hands and some part of her chest were covered in some black substance similar to what Orkos had.
"So, you now have a little rabble of two demigods and a pathetic minor goddess with you," the second woman said mockingly, getting some dirty looks sent her way.
"So, you two must be the remaining Furies," Percy said as he exchanged looks between the two of them.
"Hmm, how perceptive, Percy Jackson," the Fury mocked again. "That's very unlike you."
Percy raised an eyebrow. "Huh? Why are you speaking like you know me?"
"Don't tell me you forgot already." The Fury was then covered by the black substance from head to toe before the substance dissipated. There it revealed an older woman in a suit, a woman very familiar to Percy.
"Oh, Mrs. Dodds," Percy said after realizing it. "Sorry, that look threw me off the loop."
"It's Alecto, you pathetic child," 'Mrs. Dodds' said, annoyed, and transformed back into her true form. "And you, Marcus, did you really think these three little ones will save you from another defeat?"
"Unlike last time, I'm prepared!" Marcus then swung his blades around, hoping to hit both, but the two Furies moved away from the scorching swords.
Tisiphone smirked before pushing her arm forward, her bird screeching before flying towards Marcus. The red-eyed demigod retracted his blades just in time to block the charge, but the creature still hurled him forward, making him fly away from the others with Tisiphone following.
"Now to take care of you three," Alecto said.
Percy readied Riptide. "Yeah, like that will happen."
Alecto simply brought her arm up, making Zoe's eyes go wide.
"Watch out!" Zoe shouted as she shoved Percy away, just as something shot out of Alecto's hands. The next instant, Zoe was covered in a black substance almost head-to-toe. Many strands of the sludge were connected to the floor, and when Zoe tried to move, she found out that it was a really powerful adhesive. The best she could do is wiggle in place but freeing herself seemed impossible.
Percy and Annabeth gasped when they saw what happened. It looked like Alecto took Zoe out of the picture fairly easily.
Not wanting to give Alecto a chance to do that again, Percy charged at her, Anaklusmos in hand. He made several sword swings, all of which were dodged or avoided by the head Fury.
When Percy made the last sword swing, Alecto disappeared in a burst of speed and appeared behind him. He wasn't allowed to be shocked for long before Alecto grabbed his sword arm and applied some pressure to the wrist.
Percy slightly yelped as he felt his arm hurt before the pain made him drop the sword as it fell with a loud clanking noise on the ground. Alecto's arm wrapped around Percy's throat, with her lifting him up and turning him to face her.
"Did you think it would be so easy this time, Percy Jackson?" Alecto asked as her yellow eyes glared at the young demigod with intensity. "No restrictions, no captures this time. I can take you out as I desire."
Percy brought his hands to pry Alecto's off, but the Fury was surprisingly strong. Her fingers dug into his neck as he struggled to breathe.
Alecto then turned to the child of Athena. "And what will you do, owl spawn? What desperate tactic do you have?"
Annabeth gulped as she gripped her knife tightly. She had to do something, but what? While she wasn't a slouch in combat, everyone else here easily outclassed her. She prided herself in being a daughter of Athena and the intellect that came with it.
But in this situation, she wasn't sure if she could do anything. Zoe was incapacitated and Percy was literally within the enemy's grasp, and Marcus was occupied with the other Fury. She racked her brain for any solution, anything at all. And she had to hurry before Percy's neck was snapped.
Then something in her clicked when she saw Riptide was no longer on the ground.
"Why?" Annabeth asked, getting a raised eyebrow from the Fury. "Why are you doing this? Why plot to destroy Olympus? Aren't you afraid of the gods retaliating?"
Alecto chuckled. "Because we have the means to do so. The gods are pathetic, getting too complacent and soft. The rightful rulers should be people of action. People like us and Ares."
"Oh, really?" Annabeth asked, all while moving her hand to her pants pocket as subtly as she could and tapping at it. "I'm surprised you don't just let the Great Prophecy do the job for you."
Percy was delighted that the grip from the Fury was slackened with her attention being elsewhere, but what on Earth was Annabeth doing with that tapping?
The son of Poseidon's eyes widened as he felt a lump in his pocket.
"The Great Prophecy leaves a chance for the gods to survive," Alecto replied. "Our means are assured, and we'll-"
Alecto stopped herself as she felt something was off. Why was Annabeth suddenly so willing to talk to her when she was choking her boyfriend?
The lead Fury let out a scream as a sword blade pierced through her stomach. She looked to see Percy smirking at her, his sword back in his hand.
"Ha, got yo-!"
Before Percy could finish, Alecto threw him away from her. Percy dug his sword into the ground to stop himself from falling off the Hecantochire's arm.
"Did you think that I would be taken out that easily?" Alecto asked, snarling as she clutched her bleeding wound with one arm.
"Well, I was kinda hoping to," Percy admitted.
Alecto scoffed before turning to Annabeth, her wound already healing.
"I shouldn't have underestimated you, child of Athena," Alecto said. "Then I'll kill you first!"
Annabeth's eyes widened as she saw Alecto dash at her, with Percy desperately exclaiming for her to stop, and Zoe trying to wriggle out of her binds as best as she could.
But just as the Fury was about to reach Annabeth, Tisiphone flew into her and pushed her out of the way, also catching everyone off guard.
The familiar bird screeched as the blue and gold monster flew overhead, with Marcus hanging off of it with a blade and using the other to pierce through the creature, causing a few bursts of yellow light to spurt from the stab wounds.
Marcus and the bird crashed into the ground, cracking it. However, Marcus recovered quickly and stabbed the bird into the stomach with both blades. He retracted one of the blades and plunged his hand into the wound before taking something out of it.
A stony object shaped like a heart that also gave an orange-ish glow.
"Hey, Marcus!" Percy called as he got to Marcus' side. "Glad to see you back! Again!"
Marcus gave Percy a smirk before turning to the bird only to see it glide away and shrink back to Tisiphone before disappearing when it reached her back.
"This is ridiculous," Tisiphone commented as she and Alecto stood side by side. "That little trinket won't save you any more than it did before."
"Besides," Alecto said as she reached for something behind her back. "You still don't have-" She stopped when she felt nothing there.
"Oh. I knew that looked important," Percy said before taking something out of his pocket and revealing it to be a small sculpt of the upper part of a face, with two glowing eyes in it.
Marcus couldn't help but feel proud of his student.
Alecto snarled as she looked at the green-eyed demigod in rage. "Tisiphone, let's retreat for now," she said, getting a confused look from her sister. "We won't finish them here."
Tisiphone nodded and the two of them began floating before flying away towards their mountain temple.
Percy let out a relieved sigh as they seemed to be temporarily safe at least while Annabeth looked worriedly at where the Furies went. They definitely had something in mind and she didn't like it. Not one bit.
Marcus sheathed his remaining blade before walking over to the still bound Zoe. He then brought the stone to her hand, and the stone suddenly burst into yellow light, and Zoe was suddenly flung out of the black sludge. Her eyes were wide as she seemingly only now remembered how to breathe. That felt… really strange.
Looking back at where she had been, she saw that in her stead was now a duplicate of her, but completely black in color with yellow eyes.
"Wow, that's a neat trick," Percy commented before looking at the eyes. "And I assume these are the Oracle's eyes."
"Indeed," Marcus replied. "That artifact will be crucial when fighting them as it will dispel their illusions."
"They can use illusions?" Annabeth asked.
"Yes, and very good ones too," Marcus answered as he turned to the three of them. "I'd honestly rather go alone for this one."
Zoe crossed her arms. "Well, unfortunately for thee, thou won't be alone."
"What she said," Percy added.
Annabeth casually shrugged. "I think my answer is obvious."
With a small sigh, Marcus gave a nod. "Fine then. We'll finish this once and for all."
Then once again went running towards the temple of the Furies. Considering how long the arm of the Hecantochire was, it took them a little while. Soon they stood in front of a giant golden door, very ornate in design and decorated with many symbols.
"Okay, so, how do we get in?" Percy asked.
Marcus just walked in front of the door and pressed his hands against it. With a grunt, he began pushing. The door creaked for a little bit before Marcus managed to push the doors slowly forward, and with one push managed to get them completely open.
"Right. Forgot about that," Percy commented. "Gods, I wish I had super strength."
"Trust me, sometimes you wish you don't," Marcus said as he made several steps into the temple, his footsteps echoing on the metal floor. "Be careful. Who knows when they will strike."
The three nodded and flared their senses. They didn't want to be caught off guard by another surprise attack from the Furies.
The temple was very spacious, made with a combination of metal and marble, mostly black and only illuminated by a large light coming from the front. The group walked forward, weapons ready.
They moved through the temple's interior, but nothing. Nothing came after them yet. That made the situation even more unnerving.
A little more while and they found themselves near a more spacious dome-like area, that was decorated with statues that stood next to what seemed to be small waterfalls of the black sludge. There was a circle-shaped platform in the middle that was connected by a bridge. And right in the middle of that platform… stood Alecto.
The head Fury simply looked unimpressed as she crossed her arms.
"You should have simply continued obeying lord Ares' orders, Markus Addams," Alecto said. "For your treachery, you will suffer for eternity along with the rest of the filth here."
"Oh, really?" Marcus said. "Let me tell you how this will end up. With me sending your body parts to Ares!"
Marcus then roared and ran across the bridge, with the others quickly following him. However, they came to a sudden stop when a blue cage highlighted with yellow energy appeared in front of them.
"Illusion! Use the eyes!" Marcus commanded.
"Um." Percy quickly took out the Eyes of Truth and pointed them at the cage. "How do these-?"
A bright white light suddenly burst from the eyes and erased the cage from existence.
Then the monstrous bird appeared, headed at them at high speeds. They moved away to avoid the attack, but the bird burst through the bridge with a loud crash, destroying it.
The group exclaimed in various volumes as they almost began plummeting to their deaths, but Marcus quickly took out the green jewel and extended his hand. A green glow emanated from the jewel, enveloping all the rocks and debris created from the crash.
The bridge pieces then stopped moving before going in reverse and gathering together, with the four also floating back with the pieces. The bridge was once again restored and the group quickly ran to the platform.
Alecto was still there, joined by her sister who had her bird familiar out.
"Shame that didn't finish you. It would have made things simpler," Tisiphone commented with her arms crossed.
"No matter. A few toys aren't going to be enough to defeat us," Alecto said. "Mere mortals cannot withstand our power!"
Tisiphone then used her familiar to fly away into one of the black waterfalls, with Alecto dropping on the floor and seemingly beginning to heavily convulse as the black substance burst out of her.
"Okay, this is getting freaky!" Percy exclaimed, with the rest really wanting to agree.
Alecto then compressed into herself as the black sludge sprinkled, before several large black and purple tentacles sprouted out. One of them moved at blinding speeds and wrapped around Marcus and Percy, with another wrapping around Zoe and Annabeth.
The mass of sludge and tentacles then pulled them into one of the waterfalls, without even giving them time to vocally express themselves.
The chance of scenery was quite something. They were seemingly taken to a completely different dimension. They were suddenly at a dark sea in the middle of a maelstrom. There was a large storm with very loud lightning strikes in the distance along with a strange grey island and an erupting volcano in the distance.
Rain poured on them as they were hurled through the air by tentacles.
Marcus grumbled as he was pressed together along with Percy in a tight grip, with the young man slightly yelping. With his blades still in hand, Marcus increased the flames they produced and moved his hands to pierce the tentacles.
A small explosion of fire erupted from the tentacle, spurting blood from it and releasing the two from its grip.
With Zoe and Annabeth, Zoe quickly regained her composure and was able to grab a silver knife. She then pierced the tentacle with it, with the black-purple flesh beginning to pulsate firey red.
A screeching sound was heard, as the tentacle let go of her and Annabeth. Zoe was somewhat grateful for this circumstance as the more monstrous form of the Fury made her lunar silver dagger more effective.
The four of them were free but were now falling down, heading in a direction of a stray greek-style ship.
Zoe then grabbed Annabeth and turned them around, making Zoe land on her back as they struck the ship, grunting in pain as she did so, but glad to cushion the blow from the blonde demigoddess.
Marcus and Percy weren't so lucky as they fell into the water next to the ship.
Percy felt immediately energized as his body came in contact with the water. Looking around though, it seemed to be pretty dark. No wonder since pretty much all the light in this place seemed to come from the natural disasters happening around them.
His eyes then soon widened when he suddenly saw two large glowing eyes and rows of large and razorlike teeth appear. A very audible roar was emitted from the open mouth as the sea monster then swam at him.
Then something slammed into Percy, moving him out of the way of the approaching monster as it dashed right past. Looking up, Percy was surprised to see that it was Marcus that held him as he began swimming upwards. The red-eyed demigod didn't even seem to be holding his breath.
After a few moments they emerged from the water right next to the ship to which Marcus quickly grabbed unto, and then he threw Percy upwards until he was right on the deck, a short distance away from Zoe and Annabeth.
"Oh, man," Percy said. "With everything that's happened I'm starting to get a fear of water."
"Water will be the least of our concerns in a few seconds," Marcus said as he appeared from the side of the ship and jumped onto the deck.
The four of them quickly gathered together in the middle of the ship as they waited for their enemies to come.
Tisiphone then appeared with the help of her familiar and floated over them.
"Your fates are sealed, mortals," Tisiphone said mockingly.
And right after, a giant monstrous head appeared from the water, overlooking the ship. Tentacles gathered around it as the four gazed on the monster form of Alecto.
"Well, looks like we're in for the fight of our lives," Zoe said.
Percy brought his sword up. "Yeah, what else is new?"
