It was the third week of the Second Term, and no one could say that things had been easy. Aizawa-sensei had seemed to be cracking down harder than before now that the License Exam. It had been rather interesting seeing their class being separated into seven teams of three people all last week. Each day everyone had been shifted to new units so that there was little to no overlap. When Ida had asked why Aizawa-sensei chose to do this, a chill fell upon the classroom.
The answer was succinct and left no room for further questions. At times, after they left the school and became heroes in the world, there were chances that they'd be called upon for their individual abilities to be a part of a team. So, not only were they learning teamwork and building, but it was an opportunity to learn more about each other and how to get along. However, it was clear that there was friction between a few people on the team. Which after the first day, they'd all had it explained to them as learning to set aside their petty differences and focus on the mission, so it was successful. An example of a team that didn't have a failed mission was Heros' death and others hurt. To make it worse, it had to deal with the parents of the small child that Kagome's family was taking care of.
Each day had its own mission objectives, from infiltration and extraction to recon and retrieval. Each team was graded on planning, prepping, and execution of the mission. And it wasn't just Aizawa-sensei, but All-Might and a few of the other Hero's watching and rating them in the various fields. What had them all reeling was the three-person team consisting of Uraraka, Bakugo, and Higurashi. It had become rather clear that there was discontent between Bakugo and Higurashi. Though, it wasn't exactly easily seen while they were in the field. Each of them had utilized their abilities to the fullest for the mission objective of recon and retrieval.
Watching the replay after an alarm had been triggered was spectacular, like something one would see in the movies. The way they finished the mission with an explosion that was blown back at the drone pursuers via Kagome's Quirk. It shocked everyone watching as Higurashi smacked Bakugo on the back of the head. At the same time, Uraraka grabbed him and floated up (barely) with him as the air seemed to shimmer around Higurashi before it formed a convex lens facing away from her. In seconds Bakugo thrust his hand forward and shot off his new move, only to have Uraraka null her ability as the explosion hit the lens Higurashi made, doubling the power. The sheer destructive power had been an eye-opener as they watched the drones and a good portion of the field vanish, which Higurashi was tossed backward onto her butt painfully.
The level of concern everyone felt for her from the repercussive force she had absorbed was bad, but she had come out a bit dizzy, bruised, and had several minor heat burns. But she acted like it wasn't an issue, grabbed her two stunned teammates, and dragged them as she ran to the safe zone to complete the mission. Later they found out that she had a few fractured bones, sprained ankles, and wrists. The sounds of her screams as Healing Girl fixed her up were something no one wanted to hear again.
Now, Class 1-A stared at their teacher in a mix of horror and confusion. They had just been informed that they had a week starting today to work with the new seven-man team they'd been assigned for a battle royal. And once that was over, the top 10 students would be chosen to go up against Class 1-B. Even though they would be let out of class in less than thirty minutes to talk to each other on the team, had they questioned the sanity of what they were learning?
Team 3 sat in the community living area of dorm 1-A around the coffee table. They had been discussing the other team compositions. Their own seemed rather eclectic? There was a decent mix of quirk users, considering a random number was pulled from a box to decide the teams. But they all knew from the past week of working with each other about abilities and how each other would react in certain situations.
"Well, I guess we should start on our battle plan? It is a Battle Royal that is centered around Capture the Flag," Tenya said, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Or rather the Team Leader, which we still have to decide."
This caused the group to look at the table, which was littered with papers, half-drunk cups of juice, and an empty plate of cookies.
"Well, I think choosing a Team Leader is our most important priority," Momo said, her lips pulled down as her brow creased. "But I don't think we should choose a leader who is the obvious choice, like myself or you Ida-san."
Momo's words had everyone looking up and nodding in agreement before several eyes went to the least likely three in the group before dropping to the table and the list they'd written up of each person on each team.
"I can already guess who will be Team Leader for Team one and Team two," Izuku said softly, as he reaches out and pulled the pen and paper to him, circling the names boldly. "Bakugo and Todoroki. And they are both offensive quirk users. And both are incredibly smart and would know how to utilize their team members' quirks."
No one disagreed with Izuku on whom he said they'd choose. Both were strong physically and mentally. They watched as Izuku tapped the paper with the pen over and over after replacing the cap.
"So, how would you counter this? I mean, seriously, we only got a week to work with each other in a switching system," Mashiro muttered as he sat back and stared at the list. "I mean, do you all remember the extent of everyone's quirks?"
Silence reigned again over the group before a soft, excited squeak drew their attention to Kagome. The brilliant sparkle in her eyes had them feeling as if they were being left out as she smiled darkly.
"Notebook!"
When she squealed one word, they were confused until she stood up and slammed her hands on the table, and thrust her face into Izuku's face. It was concerning and comical to see as Izuku's face turned a dark crimson that complimented his green hair.
"Kagome?"
"Notebook," Kagome repeated herself, this time her voice softer and more insistent.
"What do you mean," Izuku said, his voice coming out as a nervous laugh as he leaned back.
Before asking about a notebook of all things, she jumped over the coffee table and pinned Izuku to the floor before anyone could ask what Kagome meant. The fearful, girlish squeak from Izuku was amusing before he whimpered as Kagome began to tickle him mercilessly.
"Izu, notebooks!" Kagome growled as she shifted her weight and brought her calves up, so her ankles were over Izuku's pinning. "Tell me. I know you very well, Izu-chan."
The sight of Izuku squirming, tears falling from his red face as he gasped for breath as he fought not to laugh and accidentally use his quirk. It was definitely something none of them would have ever thought of ever seeing.
"K-Kagome, p-please s-s-stop!" Izuku finally gasped out, his voice a little shrill. "The usual place."
Before they could say anything, Kagome was standing and jumping over the back of the couch. They just sat there and watched as she rushed up the stairs at a break-neck pace, slamming into the wall because she couldn't turn the corner and was out of sight. Soon a loud thud was heard as a door was opened before another, the more muted thud was heard, came from the second floor.
"Uh, what is going on, Midoriya-san?" Tenya asked while offering a hand to help up Izuku.
"First, let's head to my room," Izuku said, his voice low as he bent and gathered up all the papers and utensils on the coffee table.
The group stood inside the doorway and watched as a pair of legs seemed to shimmer out from under Izuku's bed before they bent and wiggled backward. It was rather an impressive view for the guys in the group while Momo flushed darkly. Soon enough, Kagome fully emerged from under the bed and held a stack of notebooks above her head. When she looked over her shoulder at them, a large devilish grin on her face, it had them wondering if she lost her sanity somewhere.
"Well, don't stand there," Kagome chirped at them as she set the notebooks to the side and crawled back under the bed.
"Uh, Miss Higurashi? What are you doing?" Mashiro asked as he stepped further into the room after the others and shut the door behind him.
When Kagome was once more out from under Izuku's bed, she set another large stack of notebooks on the other side of her. Though the same smile was still on her face, her blue eyes were oddly calm and assessing.
"Giving us an edge because of random luck," Kagome said as she shifted her body, so she was sitting on the floor, legs crossed. "And we have an impressive team with various quirks that can help us win this Battle Royal. More so thanks to the Izuku habit."
At this, they all turned to look at Izuku, who was looking at the ground looking a mix of embarrassed and sullen. Without a word, they all made their way over to where Kagome sat with the appropriated notebooks.
"Kagome, you owe me for this," Izuku muttered as he sat next to her and leaned his head on her shoulder.
"I know, Izu. But this will give us an edge that the other teams won't have," Kagome said as she let her own head rest against Izuku's. "And I will owe you a favor or request, as long as it has nothing to do with what happened in the past."
The group watched the touching scene, having gotten used to the skinship between the childhood friends. A few knew that there was nothing romantic after Izuku had flat out told them and seeing what they had seen that night almost a month ago.
"Thanks, Kago," Izuku said, reaching out and picking up the top notebook from the closest pile. "Inside each notebook are my notes I have been taking since school started. They covered a wide variety of things about our classmate, ranging from personality traits I have noticed, to likes and dislikes, and finally what I have noticed about everyone's quirks."
They looked in shock at both Izuku and Kagome. The latter just shrugged and picked up one of the notebooks and began to read through it.
"This is something we both did as children when we thought we would be quirkless for the rest of our lives. It allowed us to be a part of those who did quirks," Kagome said softly as she narrowed her eyes. "And Izuku is very thorough."
Still, they stayed silent as each reached out to take a notebook and began to flip through them. In seconds they were in awe at the amount of detail that was listed in the notebooks they were reading. There was no doubt now that they had an edge, even if it is small.
"As to our Team Leader, I would like to make a suggestion," Momo said after finishing her notebook and closing it.
When everyone was looking at her, she gave a small smile and continued speaking, "I think it should be Kagome. I mean, she isn't the most likely choice. And her quirk is unique, so that gives her an edge since she can do barriers to a small extent."
At the suggestion, everyone turned to look at Kagome, who had her eyes wide, mouth open, and clearly shocked. This had them all laughing as they agreed that Kagome would be the best Team Leader. When she tried to deny it, they all pointed out that she can make rather pointed decisions on the fly to fit the situation. Seeing her turn red and grumble softly in embarrassment only had them laughing harder. Then without another word, they began to devour the hidden treasure trove that was Izuku's notebooks.
Eventually, it was time for lights out, and they had to go back to their own rooms. But the group felt proud of what they learned and the beginning of the plan they had for the Battle Royal. Team Three consisted of Teny Ida, Momo Yaoyorozu, Izuku Midoriya, Mashirao Ojiro, Koji Koda, and Kagome Higurashi.
While Team One was comprised of Katsuki Bakugo, Yuga Aoyama, Denki Kaminari, Ochako Uraraka, Kyoka Jiro, Hanta Sero, and Aikido Sate, while, in a sense, the first two teams seemed balanced, it was clear where there were power verse technical skills. And tomorrow, Team Three would meet up at the local library and start to discuss the pros and cons of each team while formulating a battle plan to turn in on Monday to Aizawa-sensei.
