Before we begin the next act in this story, I first must commend our heroes on aiding the Pokemon that had been accosted and defeating the wicked Benedetto along with his entourage. Well done indeed.
Alas, every light casts a shadow as the Kalos Pokemon now roam the region, confused, hurt and afraid. The infamous Hunter J knows the names of our heroes and there is still much to be learned.
A two day conflict resolved by two children and five Pokemon has sent ripples all over the world and will impact the future forever. Now we must witness how the League addresses it and how Topaz copes with the life he now leads. He is still but a Fool and thus he does not yet realize the path he has chosen is raked with so much more pain.
There are many in Sinnoh searching for the place where they belong, but there is a niche for everyone in this world. We must simply open ourselves to new possibilities in order to see them.
It is thanks to meeting others we can begin to grow and change into our better selves. The bonds we share have shaped our world for the better. Those who surround themselves with those they love and love them back are oft the happiest despite all odds.
Bound by strings of fate welcome to Arc 3: Invisible Ties. Diversity is a blessing; embrace new companions. Else your isolation shall be your undoing.
Location: Sinnoh League meeting hall. One week post Benedetto's arrest.
~Volkner~
The League meeting hall had been renovated. We all agreed it was invaluable that at least one of our main teammates should attend each meeting, and so the hall had been restructured to allow Pokemon platforms. We each had one located behind us, looming over us.
If one of our team attended the meeting, then they could pass along the relevant information easily. For this meeting Froberge sat comfortably at his podium, surveying the room. Either him or Roland would do to stand in. I valued both their thoughts on important matters, but Roland was looking out for Topaz back home.
The Elite Four and Cynthia weren't here yet, which is a bit strange since usually Flint talks my ear off before every meeting and distracting me. I appreciated peace as much as the next guy, but sometimes I missed his rambling. At the very least it was nostalgic.
All the other gym leaders were engaged in their own conversations. Byron was talking with his son, Roark, the future candidate for the Oreburgh Gym. Some would say this is a case of nepotism, but it's hard to dispute his superiority amongst his competition. Rampardos just hits a bit too hard, even among rock types.
He's got a mind for the Underground and managing its proceedings. Over the years he's really helped ease the workload off his father and they've bonded and butted heads over it. He'll make an excellent leader.
There was another trainee from Veilstone, Maylene the future fighting gym leader. After Aaron was promoted to Elite, Veilstone (somehow) became a fighting gym and she rose up the ranks with her Lucario. Her skills and physical aptitude surpass the mark, but I heard she had some confidence issues. At the very least here she seemed assured enough.
Off to the side there was Khione and Candice discussing avidly. As the future ice leader it was important for her to attend these meetings, but in this case due to her involvement in today's topic it was imperative.
Benedetto.
Another reason why I didn't particularly enjoy Flint not being here yet is because of my own nephew's involvement in the case. I kind of brushed it off before, but now we had to discuss how we would proceed with what we learned from Benedetto's capture. And how to deal with the aftermath. Especially Benedetto's torture.
Of course Topaz would get involved in something like this. If he was gonna do something crazy I'd at least want to see it.
"Lux," Froberge purred behind me. It was his indication that the Elites were here and it was time to pay attention.
After a few seconds, Aaron, Bertha, and Flint entered the room prompting us leaders to stand up. They were followed by a man in a long brown coat with a shifty expression. Following them came Lucian, Professor Rowan and finally Cynthia along with Heimdall.
Each of them made their way to their seats, one of their Pokemon making their way to the podiums to attend the meeting as well. Flint smiled at Lancelot, his Infernape, as he got onto his podium. He gave an energetic wave to Froberge who simply nodded. Flint patted me on the back cheerily.
"Sorry for the wait, we've got a guest this time," He said eyeing the mysterious man who summoned a Croagunk to his podium.
"Who is that?" I asked.
Flint gave a cheeky grin. "He's kind of weird, but in a fun way. You'll see."
Before I could ask, Lucian's Bronzong rang their bell and all eyes were at the head of the table. Cynthia sat at the head, flanked by Rowan who had his usual expression and Lucian who was in his element: formal business meetings.
Riveting.
"Before we begin today's meeting in earnest, a guest will be sitting in with us today." He gestured towards the man in the brown coat. "Inspector Looker, of the International Police, is here to offer his perspective and make certain that the situation is handled fairly."
Looker nodded, keeping a perpetual look of seriousness. "Thank you! Yes, I am here to make certain that the proceedings, they go swimmingly!"
Lucian held the bridge of his nose as Looker continued. "The villain Benedetto may have been apprehended, but the story does not stop there! Oh no, we must make certain that all traces of his villainy are brought to the light! The Kalos Pokemon need help, and so do all his victims! However, that help may involve jail, rehabilitation and several other things we are here to find out today!"
Dear Palkia, why is he yelling?
Lucian cleared his throat. "Yes, I find it prudent to mention that Looker is one of the top detectives of the International Police. So if nothing else, his past endeavors have shown his skill."
Cynthia chuckled a bit as he continued. "We have much to discuss today. Take your seats and this meeting shall officially begin."
After everyone had taken their seats, Lucian brought out a projection orb in the middle of the round table. "Let's not waste time. First, it must be made clear what exactly Benedetto has done." He pressed a couple buttons and a familiar list appeared. "Cynthia, Volkner, Flint, that list you were given from… Violet, was it? Was entirely accurate. While several of his clientele are in Kalos, and thus not in our jurisdiction, there are some in Sinnoh. He does have more in Hoenn, as well as notably more in Kanto and Orre." He glanced at Looker. "I expect that this is your area."
He nodded. "Indeed it is! They can run, but they cannot hide from the light of justice and truth!"
Gardenia checked her tablet before speaking up. "So these are all the people Benedetto has done business with? How are arrests coming along?"
Looker smiled ever so slightly. "They are going very, very smoothly! I am hearing that the Sinnoh perpetrators have been arrested already, and Hoenn is cooperating quite earnestly! Kanto and Orre are stubborn as always, but they cannot hold up against righteousness!"
"Let's hope Kalos can get in gear and make sure their criminals don't go wreaking havoc all over the world again, hahaha!" Crasher Wake bellowed.
Looker nodded brightly. "Indeed, I will make certain that no evildoers of our region are permitted to continue conducting such heinous acts!"
"We can talk all we want, but Hunter J has been active for years and we haven't taken her force down yet," I stated. "Benedetto in the end turned out to be surprisingly weak, but he mastered his former boss' skill for espionage and retreat."
Gardenia sighed. "Team Galactic has also been quiet. According to the information we currently have, they can't tie the criminals Benedetto worked with to either J or Team Galactic."
Byron huffed. "You know the reports. That man is a sleazeball driven mad by his ambition. I bet there's only one person on that entire list that could be tied to Hunter J or Galactic, but they'll prolly kill 'em before we can get to 'em. As usual."
Khione nodded darkly. "Speaking of Galactic and recent murder, more carnage sites have appeared. Of them attempting to make isolated bases and being violently told no."
Khione tapped away at her tablet before a destroyed Galactic site appeared on the projection. Instead of the snowy pines more towards Snowpoint and Snowfall, they were much more sparse and tall. Veilstone's landscape was easily recognizable, even underneath the layers of corpses. Again, several large sheets of jagged metal were laying around the area and stone spires jutted out from everything. Again, the bodies were nigh unrecognizable from how much they'd been crushed to a pulp. Again, it looked like the aftermath of a warzone.
The trainees' expression became uncomfortable while the rest of us grimaced. Candice stiffened a bit upon seeing it, but steadied herself and stared at it without turning away. "She struck again," Khione continued. "Clearly Galactic has found attempting to encroach on Snowpoint isn't something they are capable of at the moment."
She folded her hands together. "So far I have gathered two things from their attempted base placements. They are attempting to get closer to Regigigas, as besides enjoying blizzards? There's little reason for them to go so out of their way for Snowpoint. If it was about the sanctuaries for the Helheim victims, they would be going after Canalave as well. The second is trying to reclaim their old haunt in Veilstone. Byron has made certain Iron Island is thoroughly off the table, so they are going for their other foothold they once held."
"Do you think they may also be attempting to go after the lake guardian Uxie?" Maylene asked.
Khione shook her head. "If they were going after the Lake Guardians as of right now, there would be reports of activity around the other two lakes. They're far more accessible. Of course, we can't rule out them being targets in the future."
"Plus, the rangers have got the lakes handled. If there is a problem, we'd know," I brought up.
"Ah I see," Maylene nodded in acknowledgement before looking at her tablet once again. "You said 'she' struck again. I don't see a name on this report. Who is she?"
Khione looked to Cynthia, who nodded. "We have reason to believe that one of the Helheim survivors has been acting of her own accord, specifically targeting anywhere Galactic has tried to set up a base. From those who were confirmed to have survived, one of them left in the following week. She had no surviving family, so there aren't any ties to someone else we could use to find her. Her partner is a Dusk Lycanroc named Yuna, which would explain the rocky spires. And considering how thorough these sites have been, I doubt anyone without a specific purpose would go quite this far. Her name is censored on most reports as her situation is a… touchy matter."
"At first we thought it was Cole's Tyranitar or another member of Dispetto as they also commonly used rock types, but we were able to surmise that these rock attacks came from a Dusk Lycanroc," Gardenia followed up.
"I actually remember meeting her after we saved everyone. Her name was Eclipse, I think? Back then she was 11, so she's around 17 now. She was pretty standoffish and barely spoke to anyone before she up and left," Flint mentioned. "Haven't seen her since."
Byron huffed again. "Well, not exactly like she doesn't have plenty of reason to go this far. Anyone who'd been through that hell would at least think of this. She just looks to have decided thinking isn't enough. And I can't blame her."
Cynthia looked to Byron before surveying the table once again. "While I certainly agree we should talk about this further, one thing at a time. We got on this train of thought because we were wondering if Benedetto was connected to Hunter J or Team Galactic in any regard. Which we can rule out thoroughly, as well as Dispetto. He used to work for Hunter J, but left because of his own delusions of grandeur. Galactic doesn't have the room to breathe to let someone unproven like him among them. And Dispetto actively fought against him, so he clearly wasn't associated with them."
"Sounds right," Wake confirmed.
"As for dealing with Hunter J," she continued, "While we haven't been able to apprehend her yet, she also has been kept from functioning nearly as freely in Sinnoh as she has in the past. Reports of poachings of her caliber have come in from other regions, so she seems to have been forced to broaden her scope. As for Galactic, while we don't know where they are we continue to prepare for when they return. If our League were more established, we'd have more time to search for them. But we can't chase after red herrings while leaving everyone in Sinnoh to fend for themselves. We might not be taking them out just yet, but once they come back? We'll make sure they can't win in any scenario." She stated adamantly.
We all nodded in agreement. While we've managed to stamp out most of the major crime groups in Sinnoh, it's because we worked our asses off for months, no years. League staff has increased immensely over the years as now we're more of a cohesive region, but Sinnoh is so large and the population is so small. Add in the treacherous terrain and wicked climate, this region is hell to regulate.
"En parlante de, the Kalosian Pokemon." All eyes turned to Fantina as she spoke up, her voice with a hint of irritation. "They must be looked after, especially as resident conasse Benjamin has brought us a Snag Machine." Her eyes darkened. "Apparently the gamblers we drove from Hearthome have decided to begin gambling lives."
After the events of Helheim, Fantina was in charge of shutting down the gambling centers in Hearthome. They weren't as famous as the ones in say Veilstone, but they sold Pokemon as prizes and that quickly became illegal.
She put three fingers to her forehead and sighed. "For whatever reason it's a dégoûtant persistante practice of Kalos they seem reluctant to shake off. Perhaps they were planning to create an underground 'Wonder' Trade in Sinnoh."
"Sorry I'm a bit lost here, what is Wonder Trade?" Roark asked.
"Do you remember the Global Trade Station created in our very own Sinnoh, dear?" Bertha asked Roark.
"Yeah, it's in Jubilife. It allowed trades to happen all over the world, but when the League was established it was shut down and repurposed as the Global Translocation Station."
They work closely with Bebe nowadays to ensure Pokemon go where they are intended. They organize worldwide adoption and foster care systems and also handle the relocation of trainers who want to release Pokemon or Pokemon that wish to find a new habitat.
"Well in Kalos they developed the Wonder Trade which allows completely random trades with anyone in the world. It is illegal in most regions including Sinnoh, but Hoenn, Kalos and Alola utilize it. Fortunately there are politicians attacking the issue. There are 'Wonder casinos' where people may go to gamble for random 'rare' Pokemon, but those are certainly not legal in any sense."
"Ahem," Professor Rowan cleared his throat and all turned to him. "As we are on the topic of illegal Pokemon gains, I have news about the Snag Machine recovered from the smuggler."
Rowan tapped away on his tablet introducing new files and data to us. Mostly everyone seemed a bit lost at all the tech jargon, but Lucian and I seemed to get the gist. Rowan seemed to recognize that before grunting and continuing on.
"The Snag Machine, I am disgraced to say, is an amazingly modeled device. Even the prototype is an excellent piece of hardware. Due to that fact, it has taken quite a bit of time to work through all the code that bypasses my Pokeball security protocols, but I have my aides working on it as we speak. After test runs to secure any faults in the programming, I can authorize a regional update to all Sinnoh Pokeballs. Although the complete Snag Machine is not in our possession, I believe even it could not completely bypass the new code."
Candice looked at him curiously. "Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the main one in Orre? Why can't we go and get that one? It'd be doing the world a favor to make sure the full thing can't even touch Pokeballs, right?"
Looker awkwardly coughed from his seat causing everyone to look at him a moment before Rowan squinted at him and turned to Candice. "According to the International Police it is in Orre's best interest that the last remaining portable Snag Machine goes free. There is a trainer who has been using it to steal…" Rowan was interrupted once again by Looker's cough. Rowan gave him a glare. "Do you need a cough drop, or are you quite done?"
The worst part was that we all knew that it's highly likely that Rowan would shove one down his throat if he was interrupted again.
Looker shrank under Rowan's gaze immediately, ceasing any further false coughing fits. He took a long sip of water and composed himself, all under Rowan's gaze. The rest of us pretended like he wasn't the most terrifying person here. Except Cynthia. She was smiling softly.
"Interpol wishes to keep this matter quiet, but we are well versed in keeping secrets. The trainer is using it to steal corrupted Pokemon of some kind. We don't have an official name for them yet, but it seems to be isolated in Orre. The International Police," Rowan stressed the last word, glaring at Looker, before going on. "Is ensuring it stays in Orre. As we do not have jurisdiction there and it seems to be put to better use, it is best we leave it where it is for now, but I am confident Inspector Looker will ensure to keep us notified of any major changes."
He's quite skilled at making seemingly polite threats.
Looker nodded so quickly his hair was all wrong at the end, almost coughed, held it in, then almost sneezed, held that in too before clearing his throat. "Y-yes, of course I will! It is my duty as a detective of the International Police to make certain evil is vanquished and inform the regions of anything that would pertain to them!"
"Good. That is all we expect," Rowan stated, his tone still dangerous.
After a few awkward seconds of silence Flint spoke up. "So about that Syndicate? That's… a thing."
"Good point, Flint! My people have been looking into this Syndicate thing the kids were talking about, but we haven't found much to go off of. Those rich bastards really love their secrets, huh? Can't even walk into a country club without them turning up their noses or hiding behind their lawyers," Crasher Wake bellowed.
"Unfortunately. I've had some of my Gym Trainers talk to the owner of Gracidea Garden, but I think I want to meet with him myself sometime and talk about the Syndicate," I brought up. "They aren't so harmless after all. We'll have to jump through some legal hoops, but that's not my job."
"What is our problem is Benedetto's current state and the junior trainers centered around the entire incident," Aaron spoke up and we exchanged eye contact. "They may have resolved the situation, but the council has questions."
Aaron has climbed the ranks of the League over the years. During his time as a gym leader he honed his skills and managed to defeat me during the annual League tournament, claiming the spot as the strongest gym leader of Sinnoh. After some time holding onto that role and some sort of crazy training regiment, he proved himself to the Elites and joined their ranks as the first bug type elite four in the world. No other bug specialist has made it as far as he had and now he's gunning for Champion. That's been notably more difficult so he's been enjoying his current position.
I'll have to admit, it had been awhile someone new had given me such an insane challenge. By the end of the battle my heart was pumping fierce and I was giddy for weeks despite having lost. Gave my team and I something to work towards and because of that we've gotten so much stronger.
In other words I respect Aaron. I respect his ability as a trainer, a member of the Elite and even as a person. What I did not respect was his tone.
Aaron turned to Lucian who nodded before speaking to me. "We've been skirting around it, but it's time to address them."
I leaned back. "Don't hold back on my account."
Aaron tapped away at his tablet causing the projection to change. It began to show the faces of the two kids and five Pokemon that defeated Benedetto. The files on the tablet listed some information on everyone as well as a timeline for the entire case.
"The two here are Violet, last name unknown, and Topaz Heart. With them were Donut the Pikachu, Lou the Charjabug, Amethyst the Meowstic and Zenara the Mareep. A Dedenne, Cenza we've been informed, found Topaz while he was training and requested aid from her pursuing captors. During their flight, they encountered Violet and Amethyst, who had been keeping track of Benedetto's movements for weeks. The two groups joined forces, eventually taking down both his operation and him. However, Amethyst took revenge on Benedetto due to being one of the Pokemon he had previously captured. He is currently in the hospital and it's projected that he will not move from his bed for at least half a decade. Assuming he complies with physical therapy, it should be a decade or more before he's able to live a more typical life." Lucian stated plainly.
Byron huffed. "You said that the one who did all that was Amethyst. A Pokemon he'd already screwed over, right?"
He nodded and Byron just leaned back in his chair. "Good for her. Got what he deserved."
"Whether he deserved it or not, the League does not condone extreme torture," Gardenia spoke up. "I read her story and I sympathize, but this is… too much. At least he's alive unlike Eclipse's or most of Galactic's victims, but we can't turn a blind eye to torture no matter the reason."
Byron shrugged. "It ain't a blind eye if we see it and don't tell her 'punishing this evil bastard who ruined lives' is bad."
"It would be bad if she did it again. I just personally believe no matter the reason this was uncomfortably excessive. Let's not forget the kids had to experience all that too," Gardenia continued.
"Only one of them was blindsided, however." Cynthia interjected. "While Topaz was unaware of her true intentions, Violet has made it clear that she knew exactly what Amethyst was going to do. She also made it clear that she didn't influence her decision in any way, and simply helped her achieve her goal. Of course, that in and of itself is a problem, and therapy would be good for the both of them. But that requires their compliance. Until that's gained, we need to decide how exactly we go about this."
"So it was premeditated. That should play a factor in our decision as well, non?" Fantina spoke up.
"Yes, but it was a plan by the Pokemon not the human," Rowan interjected. "Nurse Joy has been doing a full work up of Violet, Amethyst and Cenza ever since they were brought into League custody. Thanks to that we've been able to update all of their exceedingly outdated medical files, but we also made sure to test Amethyst's maturity." Rowan brought up Amethyst's full file on the projection.
"We can estimate she has the sensibilities of a young adult woman, meanwhile Violet is an 11 year old girl that has depended on her for most of her life it seems. She is a minor with no one else to depend on and judging by their interactions, it seems she defers to her judgement as well. Can we say for certain she was not manipulated to use her intelligence to aid Amethyst in her plot for vengeance?"
[Yes.] All eyes turned to Heimdall, who was standing there with aura burning dimly from his eyes. [I questioned them myself, Savant Rowan. Several things became clear. While she despises humans, the human named Violet was more than willing to confide in me. However, there were some topics she refused to speak on. Two primarily, though fundamentally different. With one, her aura was that of earnest determination. A duty she feels. The other, one she has strengthened herself against. An inner demon, likely formed from other humans. Considering the timeframe of what they divulged, as well as what she was willing to discuss, the level of trust and dependency she has on Amethyst would not have come about without severe mental manipulation. Which has not occurred. Her brain has been touched by psychic influence several times, but no more intimately than a child accompanying a psychic using telepathy frequently.]
"So we can rule that their bond is indeed genuine," Bertha noted.
[In addition, Amethyst had brought this potential up several times. Neither are foolish enough to have not considered this outcome. What I believe is more pressing of a matter than if she was manipulated by a family member, is her mental state. She has an exceedingly abnormal intellect for a human of her age. While most would be contemplating the mortality of the world by this point, she is contemplating actions of all of humanity. Past, present and what she can determine of the future. She does not see that the world humans are creating can end in anything but misery for the natural world. And she has quite clearly not interacted much with humans who go against this notion.] His brows furrowed. [In short, she feels it is her responsibility to take on the burden of all that humanity has done ill. If anyone feels the need to lie, you are welcome to say you would not crack under such strain.]
"I see… Thank you for your insight, Champion Heimdall. She obviously has quite a bit of potential. Considering her passion for Pokemon and immense intelligence, with her skillset she could truly make a difference. In fact, she already has," Rowan hummed.
"Yet despite all her grievances with humanity she decided to work with Topaz? Why him?" Maylene asked. "Candice. It says in the file you two worked together during the mission. With Amber and Crystal too. Did Topaz even mention her?"
Candice shook her head. "Not once. He seemed conflicted over something, but given how he watched someone get squashed I figured it was related to that. I wasn't gonna push it. He was more clearly out of his depth in terms of how ugly fights like that can get."
He's got no field experience. He's not even a junior gym trainer and he jumped into this hot mess.
"How about you Volkner? Did you know anything? He is your neveu, correct?" Fantina asked.
"By the time he told me the truth there was nothing I could feasibly do. He was out of my reach and there were other problems to contend to…" Aaron stared at me as though he was looking for elaboration. I glared directly at him as I continued. "I legitimately tried to track his signal, but due to him teleporting to a submarine across the region I lost it. There is only so much I can do when he decides to go on a warp spree."
"I am actually quite impressed with how much he was able to contribute to the mission. We have been discussing Violet's genius and according to these preliminary results it would not be remiss to say she is more intelligent than everyone in this room, but your nephew has a high bar as well. Is he an Advanced akin to yourself?" Bertha asked.
"You mean Alter?" Cynthia interjected. "We've been made aware of more than enough cases of it being a detriment to where 'Advanced' isn't quite accurate anymore."
"My apologies dear. The only cases people talked about during my time were the beneficial types," Bertha apologized to the Champion before addressing me again. "I know your father well and your lineage has always been predisposed for increased intelligence, affinity with electric types and most notably an aptitude for machinery. Does Topaz share in those traits? His medical files list him as an Altered human, but to what extent?"
I hummed in thought. The humans of Regiearth would not have survived the ancient times with thick skin and flexible minds. Cooperation was key amongst ourselves and willing Pokemon such as Lillipup and Rockruff, but we ourselves had to be capable as well. Our bones became stronger, our minds faster and our skin more resistant in order to survive confrontations with Pokemon.
In ancient times, even if a child's entire village was annihilated by a rogue Garchomp the child usually had the skills to survive on their own and the body to withstand it. It's why ten year olds were fine going out alone. It was a rite of passage and proof of their strength. Even if they can't officially go on journeys at that age anymore, we still permit them to train and bond with the most powerful creatures on the planet.
Over the centuries it's been noticed that humans who live with certain types of Pokemon for generations at a time tend to lean more towards their traits. The most extreme cases can be listed as Altered humans, as the regular human's physical and mental aptitude has increased dramatically over the course of thousands of years.
Electric families as my own have shown signs of increased electrical resistance, intelligence, aptitude with machines and of course, an affinity with electric types. Myself, my father, his mother and beyond all have those traits. Even my own sister, Topaz's mother, displayed them. We all had them in common and Topaz is no different.
"According to his official diagnosis, his aptitude with machines is not on the same level as myself or his mother, but he does have all those traits. We've been honing his abilities before he was even a trainer and he catches on quick. I read the files and he utilized everything he's learned to aid in the defeat of Benedetto. He is not the most extreme case of an Altered human and he's definitely not a Violet, but he is indeed one. Just like me," I answered.
Being Altered wasn't particularly rare or exceedingly special. They are also very serious about diagnoses as sometimes people are just talented or they simply have an aptitude. I know some gym leaders such as Sabrina or Clair may be Alters due to their affinity towards psychics and dragons, but it absolutely was not the deciding factor in someone's life. In some cases it was just a neat advantage.
"Thank you for the clarification. I can now easily see why they were able to take down Benedetto with no casualties on their side. They were born for greatness," Bertha praised them.
Cynthia, meanwhile, raised an eyebrow. "Not exactly. Certainly, being an Alter can help, but it doesn't necessarily make you good at something. It just means you can be good at something. They had to work hard to do what they have. And you're well aware I'm not an Alter, all of my family's ancestors are human. Me and my team simply worked at it. As did they and theirs. Let's not mince words here, Alters or not? If they were without the Pokemon with them, they would be very dead."
Byron laughed. "My son and I might be a bit more thick skinned than normal, but that doesn't mean I don't have the aching bones and muscles to prove I've been in the Underground for more'n my fair share." He clapped Roark on the back. "And he's well on his way to being just as achy as his old man!"
Cynthia smiled a bit before turning back to Bertha. "Besides, I'd say you're quite excellent at your job, and you're not an Alter. Lucian has proved plenty wrong with nothing more than determination to improve, and Flint isn't an Alter. Just hyper."
I noticed she did not mention Aaron. I am curious if he is an Alter or she doesn't know, but most of me doesn't care.
"So we can rule out them being Alters having anything to do with our judgement. Despite some of their feats being nothing short of extraordinary, we need to take into account what they did know. Topaz knows League protocol and the first thing he should've done was call Volkner or at least confide in Candice. Violet knowingly aided in the attempted murder of Benedetto which turned into exceedingly inhumane torture on the levels of Dispetto. Agreed?" Aaron asked.
Heimdall nodded. [Their innate ability is not to be judged here. What they do with it and the state in which it leaves them, is.]
Froberge shifted uncomfortably behind me. I could sense his concern for Topaz and his team easily. I whispered a few comforting words to him before bringing my attention back to the meeting.
"That Amethyst sure did a number on Benedetto. Hell, his whole team look like they've been fried judging by the account of these injuries," Crasher Wake clumsily tapped on his tablet and brought up pictures of Benedetto and his team, along with their medical files. Benedetto looked more dead than alive as he was wrapped like a mummy and stuck within an incubation chamber. "Frankly, I want to know how she could break a man so bad and still leave enough for him to survive. Looks like the male Meowstic may go blind in his left eye, too."
"That was a life or death situation, whether or not they pursued it. The council would understand why we cannot reprimand children and their Pokemon for performing extreme measures to ensure their survival against an infamous criminal," I interjected at their defense. I looked up at the projection to see the vicious injuries over the Pokemon's bodies.
I can see Lou finally got to go all out. Those marks on Meowstic are definitely his work.
"In summation, it was self defense and we should not include the severity of the enemy's wounds sustained during battle into our judgement. They are all alive. They will all recover. And most importantly Benedetto's team tried to kill junior trainers. They did what they had to do and I believe the Pokemon here can agree with that logic," I finished. Froberge purred at my declaration and the other Pokemon mumbled amongst themselves before seeming to agree.
"And let's not forget the kids suffered too," Gardenia followed up. "It says here because of Cenza's fragile body she nearly died and Violet had to use her body as a shield while healing her. Violet was also extremely sleep deprived, had been working nonstop for days and hasn't had a real check-up in who knows how long? If she wasn't so hardy, she would've been in worse shape. Yes, I'm still not keen on the torture, but what happens in a fight for your life is different. These Pokemon were relentless and they are all still recovering from the damage."
"And what of the mental health of Benjamin?" Fantina asked. "His team as well."
"Due to the sheer amount of pain he experienced his mind broke. There's barely anything there for psychics to salvage, but they believe eventually he'll be able to communicate after extensive treatments," Rowan relayed.
"As for the Pokemon, Pangoro's rehabilitation will be difficult as he's been with him the longest time, but we have noted he seems to show a softer side around Meowstic, so they'd do well to recover together. Trevenant and Dragalge are difficult cases, but according to our experts they are salvageable. Meowstic unfortunately seems to be deeply traumatized due to his time with Benedetto, as he still seems to believe he failed him. He has lost most of his will to go on so we do not deem him as dangerous, but he is in the most need of counseling. I have seen this level of abuse more times than I would like, but our people are working on him finding his self worth again."
Cynthia looked deep in thought. "We also can't judge them overmuch on the battle injuries. None of them have the strength yet to where having learned proper control against weaker opponents is mandatory. So in a battle like this, one to the death, they'd naturally go all out. Simply stopping before any mortal wounds are inflicted intentionally. There also seems to be no particular intent to harm them to nearly the same extent as Benedetto, so while during the fight aggressions may have come to a head? No torture was conducted."
[Even in the case of the right hand Pangoro, no particular injuries stand out,] Heimdall continued. [From the account of Amethyst and Violet, she had every intention of battling Pangoro and trouncing him utterly. However, at no point was there an intent to kill. Even from the aftermath, this is evident. Had she intended to, they would have been included in Benedetto's fate.]
"Huh," Byron sat forward again. "So the only one who got super fucked up was the one who sold Pokemon and trafficked lives? And it was by one of those victims? Way I see it, Violet saw what needed to happen, Topaz worked out it was the best thing to do. Lou seemed cool with it, and Donut wasn't happy but also hasn't seen this level of shit before." He grinned at me. "You've raised the kid good, Sparky."
Maybe a bit too well at this point.
I snickered at that and nodded at him. "He's done pretty well for himself. I like to think my sister and brother-in-law would be proud, but who knows."
Professor Rowan seemed to stare at me a moment before looking back at his tablet. Before I could ask what was up, Roark spoke up.
"Like my dad said, they showed compassion to the fallen and they did what they could with the skills they had. I suppose if we're being official they should've reigned in the Pokemon a bit more for their own safety in the case of Zenara and Cenza, but none of them were forced to do this and they did it for the betterment of a lot of Pokemon. I dunno guys, considering who they took down and who they saved, I'm not sure they deserve the worst punishment."
Candice nodded at Roark. "Seconded. I've heard more than enough about what people living through those situations have to deal with, I can't even imagine living it myself. It takes a lot of focus and will to come out the other side as anything resembling who you were before. We've all seen that, haven't we? Make sure they don't do it to everyone, sure, but punishing them for this just feels wrong."
Khione smiled coolly. "I must agree with my protege. He thought himself better than the wild. He was shown how wrong he was. Nothing much more to it than that, no?"
Gardenia looked hesitant before speaking up. "I'm sorry everyone, but even if Benedetto was a horrible person what happened to him was awful and as a member of the Sinnoh League and a person, I believe we should remember that."
Fantina tapped the table. " To play Dusknoir's advocate, let us not forget that despite not being in the League yet? The young Topaz participated in League affairs and continued doing so without notifying anyone until he was sure we could not interject in their mission. He is only a junior trainer, there are regulations against them playing vigilante for their own safety. Volkner, I know you care for your neveu and because of that I know you can feel that your trust was betrayed a bit? Non?"
I didn't respond immediately so Gardenia picked up where she left off. She gave me a sympathetic look before turning to Lucian. "Were we able to contact Violet's family?"
He shook his head. "I doubt it would be remotely beneficial even if we had been able to. She may not tell us humans much, but she seems quite free in mentioning her vitriol of her 'birthing humans'."
That's the most distant term I have ever heard someone use for their parents.
"Okay so she can't go back to her parents, but we can't just let her roam free after this. For her safety and for anyone else who upsets her, right?" Crasher Wake asked.
Flint scratched his afro a bit. "Yeah she's a bit snippy, I remember that. She's been pretty chill this week, but she's mostly been sleeping so I dunno. She's a kid who's been abused just like Amethyst right? They did a very good thing and a very bad thing, but for good reason. I just think they need our help. Topaz too! I think with a bit of guidance they'll do alright. At their age we could fight yeah, but we didn't know jack. Shit, we're still learning, but you older folks and the council helped us out with all the government stuff."
"I'd say you're right, Flint." Cynthia spoke up. "Candice and Gardenia, you're both right as well. We can't punish people who stopped something as horrific as that." She gave a slightly awkward smile. "And it'd be hypocritical of me to condemn Topaz's actions when I did essentially the same thing with Galactic. Whether it was legal or not at the time doesn't matter. Sometimes you do have to take matters into your own hands. The point of the League isn't to make people do what we think is right, it's to help guide everyone to being able to make their own decisions. Provide a safe environment to allow everyone living in this region the space to develop their own way of making the world a better place. At the same time, we can't simply expect them to go off on their own and do just fine. There is a reason we raised the journey age, after all. I would propose that Topaz continues training with Volkner. Perhaps with a more close eye kept on him, but for the most part? Just making certain he's doing alright and supervised. Violet and Amethyst meanwhile deserve a space to grow into the people they can clearly be. It's abundantly evident they can and want to do the right thing, we just need to help guide them towards what the right way is for them. Namely, not torture. She needs to be looked after by someone in the League, raised and let grow in equal measure. Does that sound reasonable?"
Everyone looked around the room and started mumbling a bit before Fantina spoke first. "I believe that is appropriate. These are children in need of supervision and guidance. Topaz would do well working closely under his uncle whilst Amethyst and Violet can learn proper modération under our care. If there is a problem child you must nurture them, not ignore them."
"Hell yeah," Flint boasted. "I knew this all along. They're all pretty neat tykes. Crazy strong too considering the damage they did. It'd be sick watching them all grow up and see what they'll do."
Byron grinned wide. "Fine by me! They can grow up right. Every kid should have that chance."
"I do have some concern about Amethyst," Maylene brought. "It might be because I'm a fighting type trainer, but she's dangerously powerful. I didn't know much about Meowstic until the incident so I did some reading and not only does she have access to moves not typically known to her species, but she easily subdued the enemy Meowstic at maximum power and was the torturer in the end. What should we do about her?"
[I would recommend the two stay together.] Heimdall shifted slightly in her direction. [She was going after her tormentor. Her Aura has calmed considerably the past several days. I believe she has found the closure she sought. This is not to say that she will not conduct such activities in the future, but I believe that without being provoked or shown one akin to Galactic, she will not repeat this. Unless I am mistaken, if Violet is going to stay with one of the League, I highly doubt even if she were to attempt an all out assault she would be victorious.]
"In other words it's for everyone's best interests she doesn't. They're getting a pretty sick deal, I doubt she'd try," Crasher Wake bellowed.
"You haven't met them yet. It's hard to say if they'll say yes or no. I'm surprised they haven't tried to escape or anything," Flint shrugged before excitedly patting Lucian on the back. "Any who, Lucy! I think we're all in agreement right? Do your administrator thing and close up this topic!"
Lucian gave him a glaring side-eye. "At your behest, Flintbox." He looked back to the table. Looker seemed like he wanted to ask, but was thoroughly afraid of Rowan. I simply watched Flint's hand linger on Lucian's back a bit longer than usual, whilst Lucian seemed to lean into his touch rather than recoil as he's done before. Cynthia and I shared the briefest of knowing glances.
Oho this is new.
"So the decision is for the duo to stay with one of us, to be determined when they are well enough to leave. Gardenia. I believe it is only fitting you start the next topic, yes?"
Gardenia clapped her hands in delight. "Oh I nearly forgot, thank you Lucian!" Gardenia happily typed away at her tablet before several different news reports came up.
"So naturally a lot of news stations got wind of Kalos Pokemon suddenly popping out of some underground tunnel and the League has been pretty active in southern Sinnoh, so they were just aching for some news. Luckily, there was a lot of good news to be witnessed! The League and Rangers received a lot of good publicity for how they handled the Kalos Pokemon situation and Dispetto. While we had to keep Topaz, Violet and all their Pokemon's names private as they are minors, they'll still receive a nice monetary reward for their troubles. As for us, the Ranger Union is pleasantly surprised by how well we followed their protocols during such a major crisis. Because of that no one was hurt and we got lots of great photos of Ace Trainers and Rangers working together!"
Professor Rowan grunted affirmingly. "Correct. Professor Hastings of Almia's Ranger Union has spoken fondly of the League's actions and due to recent events, the Ranger Union is now willing to discuss bridging Sinnoh and Almia even more. We can expect promising calls from their ambassadors soon enough."
"It's about time! We're really getting somewhere! Nice job Wake, Volkner!" Flint wrapped his arm around me and pulled me in for a hug.
"We just followed protocol. Why go out our way with our Gym Trainers when we have other groups for that. Hmph," I half heartedly huffed. Flint gave me his 'you're being a tsundere' look so I just covered my face and pretended that wasn't obvious. There were some laughs before Lucian began speaking.
"While this is of course a huge step for Sinnoh, we cannot ignore the backstrides of a specific region in this same category." A couple taps of his tablet and the symbols, along with the leaders, of Team Aqua and Magma were displayed for all to see. "While we are not a region that requires on such underhanded tactics as spies to gather information-" He suddenly broke out into a coughing fit, in which I swear I heard him say 'Kanto' before Rowan, a sly smile on his face, handed him a cough drop. Looker glanced at in disbelief.
Lucian is being subtle today.
"Thank you." He swallowed it and composed himself before continuing. "-it has been quite evident that they have attained far more influence than they could on their own. While both parties were active before, at most they were relegated to simple things such as ignorance of the water cycle and not understanding base concepts such as balance. However, more recently they have both become far more destructive with technology none of them have proven capable of making. There are no known scientists of any variety working with either team, much less ones capable of devices the likes of which they employ. Extremely modified submarines, devices that pick up seismic and tidal movements with pinpoint accuracy and several drilling units. In short? Either they are the one in a billion outdated example of 'Mankey with a typewriter', or they are being given tools they do not understand and running wild with them."
"Do we have cause to intervene?" Aaron asked.
Cynthia shook her head. "Unfortunately, no. While I'd love an excuse to spend more time chronicling Hoenn mythology and taking out those who'd watch the world burn from their own ineptitude to boot, we can't just waltz in and take charge. That's up to the Hoenn league. Unless they explicitly ask us for assistance, we can't step in."
"Aren't you personally close with Steven? Does he think they can handle it?" Roark asked.
Cynthia thought for a moment. "Well, from a personal standpoint? He's said he wouldn't mind my help at all. But let's keep in mind, the Hoenn league is much older than our own. Not only in how long it's been established, but how old those in charge are. New blood is taking over recently of course, but they're in much the same position we were in a few years ago. Too young to properly deal with everything on a Gym Leader or Elite's plate, so their predecessors are still taking care of several aspects. If they were to ask for help from us, they feel it would make them appear weak." She gestured to Lucian. "Public opinion of Magma and Aqua isn't exactly high, even threat wise. If they couldn't handle that, what does that say about their League as a whole?"
"Exactly. It's all about pride in the end," I affirmed. "If they can't handle some thugs who failed first grade science, then what does that say about their League and government?"
Lucian hummed. "Let's not be cruel. Several in Team Skull actually did fail first grade science, and even they understand such base concepts. Failing kindergarten is more accurate."
Maylene looked a little confused. "Who is Team Skull?"
"A later conversation. Now? It is likely for the best that they handle it. We are stretched quite thin already, non? Let us rejoice in the good news we've received and continue to thicken our thinness," Fantina smiled.
~x~
There was a bit more talking, making sure we all agreed on what report we'd relay to the council and to ensure our decision was clear. In the end it was agreed that Cynthia and I will decide what exactly will happen to Topaz and Violet, which was perfect as we know them best. Lucian would relay the report to the council so they can go put that in the record or whatever they do.
Before Cynthia was in charge, the government was primarily run by the council. Technically it still is as she isn't 18 yet and hasn't finished her Champion schooling, but once she has she'll have even more freedom and power in the region. All of us will actually. It's not necessary for a region to have a Champion to function, but it's definitely a lot more fun.
The council's job is essentially to do all the boring, bureaucracy that we trainers can't or don't want to do. They really help keep the gears turning for a region and best of all, they don't meddle in our affairs. Pokemon problems are our primary expertise and we each have an understanding of our roles for the region. When you live in a world filled to the brim with Pokemon in every facet of society, then suddenly most of the problems become Pokemon related. They've actually aided the League's growth quite a bit over the years, but I won't lie. I'm a bit excited for even more independence.
Once the rest of the minor topics were resolved, the meeting was adjourned. As I got my stuff ready to leave Aaron walked up to me.
"Volkner, I would like to apologize about how I spoke to you during the meeting. I haven't been an Elite for long and I just wanted to remain neutral when deciding what to do. I understand I may have come off a bit hostile," Aaron apologized.
I looked him up and down before sighing. "I get it, but you've been in the League now for a couple years, but you're still so strung up. Luckily, you can get used to your position cuz trust me, you're not beating Cynthia or even Bertha anytime soon."
Aaron looked at me with thinly veiled surprise at my blunt statement, but I kept going. "You'll do well where you are, just got to grow into it. I know you're ambitious, so let me humble you. Chill. Out. Or don't. If you get complacent I might come out of nowhere and take your seat."
Froberge roared in agreement while Aaron's Drapion snapped his pincers.
Like hell that's happening. I don't need Elite work on top of everything else. Solar panels don't build themselves… yet.
Aaron flustered a bit before nodding adamantly. "Of course, thank you for your advice Leader Volkner. You're right, Champion Cynthia and Elite Bertha are stronger than I ever imagined, but I'll keep getting stronger too! Former Elite Summer has been helping me train as well."
Summer was the Elite before Aaron joined. She stepped down some time ago to focus all of her time on Galactic activity and aiding Helheim survivors. I actually haven't seen much of her in a long while, but I'm sure she's staying busy. She's kind of like the Frontier Brains. They come and go as they please, but instill their own impact on the world.
Aaron and I spoke (well I packed up, he spoke) a bit more until he was called over by Maylene. Finally free from the overly long apology I made my way to Rowan who had just finished speaking with Byron.
"Ah Leader Volkner, I expected you to converse with me," Rowan hummed.
"You seemed like you had something to say during the meeting," I stated. "Care to tell me?"
Rowan stroked his beard. "Nothing of too much import, just old memories rising to the surface. I remember your sister and brother-in-law very well. When they were teenagers Vanna and Rod worked at my laboratory for a time as research assistants. Vanna was exceedingly competent. Rarely did I have to correct her and her notes on my work were always satisfactory. She aided me for many years and even helped develop many of the evolution items Pokemon use today including fixing the reprehensible bugs that plagued the initial copy of the Dubious Disc."
"As for Rod, while he had trouble adapting to the cold weather due to being born in Alola, he was a resourceful field researcher and worked well with all the Pokemon and researchers at the lab. Even I must admit his disappearance from the world darkens it," Rowan said, closing his eyes.
That's some of the highest praise I've ever heard him give anyone.
"Apologies for staring, I have not seen Topaz since before his parents were still with us. I grew vaguely nostalgic and it is promising to see him taking on the best aspects of his kin." For some reason Rowan's face grew stern a moment and he looked at me as though he had more to say. "You did not know your sister well, correct?"
"She was already out of the house by the time I was born. She wasn't really the family type, so we rarely saw each other unless Rod dragged her home," I admitted. It doesn't help that we never talk about her and Rod anymore back at home. It's like my parents shut off with her and I never got a straight answer as to why. Rod's parents seem to have a lot to say about Rod, but barely anything about Vanna.
"I see…" Was all Rowan said before he picked up his briefcase. "I never had any intention of punishing your nephew, by the way. From what I have read he is a noble young man that seeks to please by whatever means necessary. He looks up to you, Leader Volkner. Guide him well so that he does not take unnecessary risks to meet standards he is not ready for."
I nodded slowly, before Professor Rowan took his leave. Looker immediately laxed when Rowan left the room meanwhile I was left with my thoughts.
I'll do what I can.
In the corner stood Cynthia and Heimdall waiting for me. They seemed to be speaking, but they stopped when Froberge and I approached. Froberge greeted Heimdall in Pokespeak as I looked towards Cynthia.
"Ready?" I asked.
She nodded, smiling. "Absolutely. Let's go."
We all began to make our way out. I waved farewell to Flint as he was chatting Lucian's ear off about something or other.
~x~
The four of us made our way through the extravagant castle that is the Sinnoh League. It's been modernized for practical use, but Cynthia wanted to ensure the history was still present by maintaining the overall regal theme. Medieval times isn't really my style, but I can see why she's fond of it.
"Thanks for having my back in there. You know Topaz and we know enough about Violet. Even if we punished them for their own safety, I don't think that would be the right call for them or their teams," I said to her.
"Neither do I," she said with a calm smile. "They're all still learning. Punishing them worse than just keeping an eye on them wouldn't actually do anything but upset them all and drive them away from the League. They just need some time and space to grow." She chuckled. "And I seem to have reached the point where my research on Dialga and Palkia has entered casual speech."
I rolled my eyes, but grinned all the same. "Just wait till you start making electric puns every time someone mentions solar panels. You'll be in for a sho-"
My attempt at humor forced Froberge to cough loudly as if he was choking on a hairball. Heimdall somehow gave me a judging look despite his eyes being covered by an Expert Belt. Cynthia meanwhile laughed. "Oh Arceus, Volkner, do us all a favor and don't finish that sentence."
I sighed deeply. "Humor was never my strong suit. Flint would've tackled me at the first word. Speaking of Flint," I quickly turned around just to make sure he wasn't close (he tends to appear spontaneously and unwarranted). "Him and Lucian?"
She nodded knowingly. "They seem to be getting a fair bit closer recently. Not quite a pairing I expected, but at this point I think Lucian's just putting on airs." She shook her head, rolling her eyes. "Of course, he denies everything if I even try to bring it up."
"Not surprising. Flint has been talking about him a lot more lately. Now I understand why. So lemme guess, they are both totally oblivious to this right?"
She chuckled. "Oh absolutely. They could trip and fall into a school of Luvdisc swimming in a heart and think it was just pure coincidence."
"No doubt. Ya know the other day Flint told me that we're a popular pairing in fanfiction or something? Ignitionshipping they call us. I dunno where they got that idea because he's going in a totally different direction," I shrugged.
"Just another myth I have to uncover." She put her hand on the doorknob to her office. "Speaking of, just… try and find an empty space."
When she opened the door, her office was as it usually was. A wonderfully crafted dark oak desk, shelves and bookcases everywhere to hold all the things she'd found, a large window overlooking the city below, a Noctowl clock, her black chair and several others for whoever was coming in to talk.
And absolutely all of it was covered in papers.
Leaflets, printouts, notes and sheets were littered everywhere. Every single one had notes in the margins and you could almost convince someone there was a method to the madness. Almost. And then you'd notice the Dialga paper in the Noctowl's beak and question why you thought that in the first place.
"I thought Caitlin brought Darach here to clean all of this up? Jeez, I'm surprised Lucian can even walk in here without having an anxiety attack," I said, as I began gingerly walking through her jungle of parchment and tomes. Froberge began scanning the room for places to squeeze into. Despite his size I knew he'd find a way. Cats always do.
"He did," she said while doing a ballet of her own to not step on anything, "just last week. This just kinda… happens." She sat down, sighing a bit. "I think he's still drowning his sorrows in tea over how she's been accepted into the Unova league."
Heimdall groaned. [If I had not known her for years, I would say she did this as an excuse to get her over more frequently.]
Cynthia put a hand to her chest in mock affront. "Why, Heimdall! How could you, it's only somewhat why I do it. Most of it is I simply get distracted, but you know. I can't just ask her to come over for no reason."
He put a palm to his face. [A distinctly more manufactured reason.]
"Hey, it's a reason!" She huffed before looking at me. "If you or Froberge need more space, just give me some papers. I'll figure out…" she looked around the room, trailing off. "Somewhere else for them."
I turned to Froberge to find him squished in a cubby with his head poking out. He said something to Heimdall who spoke to us. [He has found a spot.]
Do felines have bones? They should be in the Amorphous egg group. All of them.
I handed Cynthia some papers and found a seat. "If I organized my work space like this something would blow up. Or short circuit. Sometimes both. Also I think it's a valid reason to get her to come over. Soon Caitlin will be heading off to Unova and you'll be able to see her even less. Enjoy the time you've got now."
Her face grew more solemn for a moment. "I've certainly learned that lesson." She shook herself slightly before putting the books and papers off to her right, on another cabinet that threatened to mutiny under the growing pile. "But more to the matter at hand. How's Topaz been holding up this past week?"
"Sleeping. Lots of sleeping. He was sleeping when I left and he'll prolly be sleeping when I get back. I've been a bit busy so I haven't been paying as much attention as I should, but Roland is home. As well as my parents, but Roland gets him better."
Her brow furrowed with concern. "I really should ask Lucian to look at him… Given what he went through, all that psychic energy can't have been good. I know Amethyst was gentler on purpose, she mentioned how she felt he was more sensitive, but still. A huge, unstable psychic explosion? No way that helped."
I rubbed my chin. "It might be time to take him to see a neurologist too. His brain damage hasn't acted up in ages, but just to make sure."
"That'd be good," she said, almost far away before she sat back up. "I was meaning to ask, could you be the one who looks after Violet and Amethyst?"
I had expected this so I simply hummed in response. "The logical choice. Topaz is my nephew and he's the only human they trust. We all share the same interests in technology, an affinity for electric types and an avid love for Pokemon as well. I'd choose the same person if I were you."
She nodded. "Really the only other person I could think of who she might maybe grow up right with is Lucian, but Uxie knows he's got enough on his plate already. I don't want to ask this when you, Topaz, Roland, Froberge, all of you are so similar to her." She sighed. "Someone needs to help her develop that mind of hers in the right direction, I didn't have a clue what those diagrams meant."
"But that's enough of a sign to showcase their worth. I know you're not an Alter, but you've got a gift for scouting out talent and skill. You're right though, they'll be best with us; me and my team have gotten pretty good with moody kids over the years. Hell I'm still moody," I said, Froberge meowing in agreement. "It's also best she hone that talent for the League rather than against it. Child or not, who knows what she could do if she figures out even more on her own."
She nodded. "It's absolutely wild. If I hadn't seen it firsthand, I'm not sure I'd believe it myself. I'm certain she's already thought of so many ways things could go when we go to talk to her, and in a far more focused way than a mind's anxious ramblings." She gave a small smile. "That, and it's good that Topaz made a new human friend. He seems a bit wary about them both of course, but if he gets along with Jade? I can see him enjoying their company as well."
The mention of Jade nearly made me fall out of my chair. "Dialga save me, Jade and Violet are going to make my life hell. I'm dying for Topaz to make some non-problematic friends," I face palmed. "Speaking of friends, how's your sister doing with her partner? It's been about a year they've been together right? That's a good sign."
Her face brightened. "It has! Things were rough at first, but they both have a lot to learn from each other. They certainly haven't gotten as close as quickly as humans and Pokemon typically do, but they're getting there. They're still trying to fight us, and Heimdall is helping hone their skills."
Heimdall gave a small smile while she continued. "He's taken a shine to the two. I'm glad they're getting along, Rowan was getting worried about that Piplup."
Rowan worried? Well he is a Pokemon Professor, if there's anything he cares about it's a Pokemon's well-being.
"They're still getting used to each other, huh? Can't say I blame them. It's hard even for untraumatized kids to suddenly be entrusted with the well-being of their first partner Pokemon for the rest of their lives. But to hear they are still going at it shows they really want to make it work. Good for them," I nodded affirmingly. "Donut was a bit distant with Topaz, but they warmed up to each other. Zenara apparently warmed up to Violet really quick. I guess the first partner Pokemon is always the hardest."
Froberge purred, likely thinking about how he used to watch Roland and I squabble when he was a little sh- I mean an Elekid. He meowed something at Heimdall that made him smile. Heimdall elected to not share that tidbit with the group.
Cynthia shook her head fondly. "I know Reginleif would be quite happy to be in here as well if it wasn't… in here. I really should clean up." She then looked back to me. "So you'll look after them, then? I can imagine Zenara will enjoy endlessly challenging Roland for the foreseeable future."
I nodded. "Yeah, I can and Zenara will love the easy access to the strongest fighters in the city. I don't think it'd be too much trouble. Topaz is pretty independent as is and Violet's been roaming the wilderness nonstop for years. I'm sure she can take care of herself well enough. I might need to make some changes though…" My voice trailed off as an idea came to mind. "Course she has to consent to all of this, but with Zenara and Cenza to look after now. It's the best choice."
She smiled warmly. "I'm fairly confident she will. She's not the kind of person who wouldn't have considered this outcome and her answer already. And we really can't just let her go on her own. I'm more worried about how she'll feel about it. Zenara and, of course, Amethyst are going to have to help on that front."
"Yup. Cenza too, according to Nurse Joy she seems to be healing slower than the rest. She thinks it's a side effect of her electric traits not being up to the standard her body needs. She's been sleeping more than Donut so I don't think we can send her back to Kalos in good conscience," I muttered crossing my arms. "I'll have to register her to my name, so she can get stable healthcare."
After a moment of silence, Cynthia stood up. "I believe we've reached the point where they should be involved in this conversation, unless there's something else on your mind?" While she waited for my response, she went over to shuffle some papers in some probably-but-maybe-not-actually meaningful way.
Froberge meowed at Heimdall who barked at him back for a bit until Heimdall turned to us. [Froberge is concerned about their safety. Questioning if Topaz' team as well as Violet and Amethyst have drawn ire that puts them all in danger.]
Cynthia's face hardened. "In that case? Sunyshore is one of the safest places they can be, sans somewhere like Snowpoint being so out of the way. And it just means we're right about making sure the both of them have room to grow in the right way."
I turned to Froberge. "We'll protect them and the city as always. As long as they stay close we can help them do what they did several times over again and again. We just got to be up to training them."
Froberge nodded satisfied as he removed himself from the cubby and landed perfectly by the door, ready to go. I got up as well and followed after him.
"Let's go then."
~Sometime later at the Beacon Household~
I sat in the darkness under the covers watching TV with Donut and Lou. I'd been relentlessly tired all week, but luckily thanks to saving countless lives while risking my own I got ample time off from school to rejoice in and many shows to marathon. As of right it was the entire Dragoniteball series.
Lou got a bit too hype during fights, but that's alright. It's a hype show. Even Donut is interested. Meanwhile I'm analyzing moves trying to see which ones they can copy on their own. Before you all ask, neither of them have mastered the Kamehameha (yet) unfortunately. On the bright side, I think the Battery Volt might be better.
Needless to say, we are invested, so when Volkner opened the door to my room and flicked on the lights we all simultaneously hissed.
"Huh, you're awake. And you've all been inside for too long," He said, as he walked in with Froberge. "Topaz, I've got some good news for you."
"Is it really more important than me watching Broly cave Frieza's face in?" I genuinely asked, not removing my eyes from the movie.
Volkner began looking at the TV, evaluated the scene and shook his head. "Honestly no, but it's a close second."
I paused the movie and groaned. Lou whirred as though he was about to mutiny. "So, what's the good news?"
Volkner handed me a real estate brochure. "Put on your shoes, the League has decided your fate. I'm buying my own place and you're moving in with me. You're a loose cannon, so we just decided to point you in the right direction. Welcome to the Sinnoh League."
"Oh…" I looked at Donut and Lou who were equally shook by this sudden declaration. "I think you might be underselling that information. Just a wee bit."
~Chapter 20 Fin~
Author's Note
I hope this answers the many questions I've gotten about how the region functioned before Cynthia and the general government. In short, there is a regular government and it takes care of the things the trainers can't. It's just not as… how do I say this politely? Annoying? Corrupt? Problematic as our world's governments. Plus the League is far more interesting to see.
I've also been informed that the readers will enjoy the story returning to more peaceful chapters and so am I. I hope this chapter fills those who crave deep lore. I'm trying to pace out the mysteries of this story, but I have to remember to actually throw out some bones, it's a hard balance to maintain.
Anywho, it's been a loooong time since we've seen a League meeting chapter and it was a blast to write! So easy to explain everything when you've got the people who know everything around. I got to have a little bit more fun with the dialogue as well.

Question: What are your thoughts on the kids' 'punishment'? What did you think about all the new details from this meeting? Who do you want to see more of in the story among the canon and OC characters? The story will get a bit more open ended for a bit and I'm open to new ideas.
