"Well, there goes the focal point of my documentary," Roz said glumly after Senator Glenn had left with the tape containing the stories of his adventures in space.
"I wonder what was so shocking about his account," Frasier mused uselessly.
Roz gave him a glare reminiscent of an enraged cat. Frasier stepped back instinctively.
"Well, if you hadn't started a fight we would have heard!" she snapped.
"ME? You kept goading me!" Frasier protested.
"Because you wouldn't listen, you big doily!"
"Would you stop calling me that?"
Silence fell upon the two, and a moment each smiled sheepishly.
"I shouldn't have interfered with your project, Roz," Frasier apologized.
"It's all right, Frasier. I'm used to your bull-headed stubbornness." Roz grinned, and Frasier gave her an affectionate hug.
"Are we still friends?"
"Of course, we're still friends, you big ninny."
"Well, we might be friends again, but there's still the problem of your documentary," Frasier sympathized. "What are you going to do now? We were supposed to air it tomorrow!"
Roz reflected for a long moment before being hit by sudden inspiration. Frasier gazed curiously at his friend and producer when he saw the light of discovery on her face, and didn't even need to ask her what she'd come up with. Roz launched into her plan at once, and Frasier couldn't help but commend her. Now they just had to pull it off!
Gathered in the studio with Frasier, Noel, Kenny, Bulldog, and Linda, KACL's political analyst, Roz gave everyone other a thumbs up. It was time.
"Are you ready, everyone? We're not nervous, are we?" Roz asked.
"It can't be worse than when we did Nightmare Inn," Bulldog said snidely.
"Shut up, Bulldog!" Roz snapped. "All right, in your places! Noel, don't forget, we're not using the ice-cream truck sound this time."
Roz's tone was playful, and Noel ducked his head, not wanting to her to see him blushing. It was unusual for Roz not to treat him like a tolerable but pesky little brother. He nodded in affirmation, remembering all too well when he'd accidentally played the sound of ice-cream truck music at the scariest part of "Nightmare Inn."
Frasier opened the production. "Good, evening, Seattle. Tonight, we bring you an original KACL drama, 'Space, Lies, and Congress: An Intergalactic Tale of Political Intrigue'. I would like to clarify that any names, places, or incidents are fictional or used fictitiously. And, with that disclaimer out of the way…Roz?"
Roz started narrating.
"We all know politicians aren't always truthful…but what if they kept a secret so great that it could affect the entire universe?"
Then the others began to play their parts, Roz narrating in-between lines. Frasier was astronaut-turned-Congressman Ron Graham; Bulldog was President Abraham Fontaine; Kenny played the vice president, as well as a few background characters, and Linda was the heroine, an investigative reporter.
Everyone played their roles to perfection. All around Seattle, listeners were riveted by a tale of buried secrets about life on other planets and the daring mission of a reporter who discovered that the government was hiding the true account of Congressman Fontaine's long-ago mission to Mars.
"Sadly, the 'traitor', the daring reporter who exposed the truth, was 'eliminated', but she left cryptic clues to the damning files. A disastrous Space War was averted…but the scandal would remain in the analls of American history forever."
Just minutes after the finish, KACL was flooded with calls from enthralled listeners—including Senator Glenn himself. Roz picked up.
"That was impressive! I can't imagine where you got the inspiration, though," the senator joked. "Roz, how would you and your 'troupe' like to perform this on national radio—from the White House? I'm sure the president would find it greatly amusing.
"Just a moment, Senator," Roz said. "Just let me ask the others."
Nobody had any objections. This more than made up for the 'Nightmare Inn' fiasco. KACL was going national!
Dedicated to the memory of Senator John Glenn. An amazing man and my favorite of the guest stars who appeared as themselves.
"We saw things out there. STRANGE things." ha! :)
