A/N: This doesn't really have a plot. Just a little bit of fluff because I think Cora was perfect for Martin and was disappointed that they didn't end up together.
This picks up where Cora comes back to Martin after Gertrude confessed to lying about seeing Martin behind her back.
"Can I get you some coffee? Tea? A Ballatine's?" Martin asked solicitously as Cora Winston made herself comfortable on the sofa.
"Coffee's good, Martin," she said, while petting Eddie, who'd just jumped onto her lap.
Moments later, Martin returned with the coffee and sat beside her, smiling broadly. Thank goodness that Gertrude had come clean to Cora; he wasn't sure how much longer he could pretend Gert didn't exist. Indeed, but for Daphne's sake, he would've found a way to convince her to return to England.
"Where are the boys and Daphne?" Cora asked as Martin daringly put an arm over her shoulders. He smiled to himself when she didn't pull away.
"Daphne's taken them to the park to teach them how to ride a bike."
Martin looked away, a tad embarrassed, but Cora laughed and gave him a reassuring smile.
"Oh, don't worry. I'm sure they'll learn in no time."
Martin fixed her with a dubious look and she shrugged in defeat.
"All right, all right, I was trying to make you feel better," Cora grinned. "But, if it's any comfort, Cam's no 'hands on' man himself. Why, last week I asked him to make a pot of coffee instead of running to Nervosa as usual. The next thing I know, I smelled something strange coming from the kitchen. I went in there and saw Cam putting out a small fire! Doesn't even know how to make his own coffee!"
They laughed so loudly and shamelessly that Eddie glanced between his master and the veterinarian before giving a cheerful bark, as if he wanted to join in the fun.
After a few more moments of jesting conversation about each other's sons, Martin turned to Cora.
"We have to apartment to ourselves for a little longer," he said. "I was wondering if you'd like to watch a few episodes of McGyver? I hardly ever watch it when Frasier's around, because all he does is complain about how 'contrived' it is. But that's the point!"
"Oh, you should hear Cam when I watch ER," Cora said. "Goes on and on about how 'real hospitals' don't operate like on the show. Well, it is fiction. So, to answer your question, yes."
Almost imperceptibly, she snuggled closer to Martin, who glanced at her in surprise before turning away as he felt himself blushing. Really, a sixty-eight year old man blushing like a teenager! But this was the affect Cora was having on him recently. He hadn't been this drawn to a woman since Hester.
Lost in the comfortable feeling of being close to each other—in more ways than one—Martin and Cora forgot all about McGyver. They didn't even hear the door opening.
And then…
"Helloooo!" a familiar (and unwelcome) voice sang out, startling them apart. "I'm not interrupting anything, am I? I had to cut my shopping trip short. These old bones don't hold up like they used to. Now, now, don't get up on my account. I'll just get myself a drink or two and be out of your way."
Leave it to Gertrude to ruin the moment.
