Hey guys! Thanks again for all the likes and reviews. They definitely motivate me to keep writing. I'm glad you guys seem to be enjoying this story so far. I do have a pretty good idea about where this story is going to go. I have a lot planned, so I hope you all stick around for it. Anyway, here is the next chapter. Hope you all enjoy it!
The nurse came to escort the team to Adam's room about 10 minutes after Will gave them the update. None of them missed the fact that they were headed to the intensive care unit. They had expected it, but actually walking through those halls made the situation feel so much more real.
The nurse finally stopped outside of room 536, letting them know they had reached their destination. She then told them she would be at the desk if they needed anything and left the team to enter the room on their own.
Kim and Kevin were the first ones to enter through the doors. There was another nurse in their reading Adam's vitals, who turned around when the two officers entered the room. She gave a friendly smile and informed them his vitals looked stable. It gave them both a sliver of relief but the second they laid eyes on Adam, the relief faded.
He looked so pale and was covered in tubes and wires. The neck brace was a bold reminder that there was still a bullet lodged in his spine and that there was a real chance Adam might never walk again.
The closer they got to Adam's bed, the more Kim had to fight the tears. Kevin pulled her into a hug once they reached the bedside. They had never seen Adam look so still. It was a hard sight to take in.
The rest of the team entered a few minutes later, wanting to give Kim and Kevin some time alone. They all found a seat, keeping a careful eye on Adam. After an hour Trudy left to go pick up sandwiches. They had been at the hospital all day and she knew for fact no one had eaten a thing. When she returned, she practically had to force Kim to eat.
About two hours later, Jay kept looking at his watch. As soon as it hit 8:00, Jay grabbed his jacket and stood up. "Hey guys, I gotta head out, but if anything happens, let me know."
Hailey looked at him confused. He hadn't told her about any plans that he had the evening and she could tell he wasn't headed home. She followed him out of the room. "Jay, everything okay?"
"Yeah, sorry, I just have somewhere to run real quick. I'll meet you at home?" Jay hated not telling her the full truth, but he didn't want to worry her any more than she already was.
"You want me to come with you?" She asked.
"No. You stay here with Adam. Let me know if something happens. I'll be home in an hour or two." He stepped up to her and gave her a kiss, sensing her hesitation. "I love you. I promise I'll be fine."
"Can't you just tell me where you're going? I'm already worried about Adam. I don't want to have to worry about you too, no matter how much you tell me I don't have to."
"I just gotta run by Will's, okay?" Jay finally admitted.
"Is it about Adam?" Hailey asked.
Jay nodded.
"I'm coming with you. Let me grab my jacket." She entered the room before Jay had a chance to protest.
Jay was reluctant to let her go with him, but knew it was losing battle. She would question him once he got home until she got the truth out of him, so rather than prolonging the inevitable, he decided it would be better for her to join him.
"So, you want to tell me why you waited for Will to get off shift to talk to him when you could have talked to him for the last few hours?" Hailey asked as they got in the car.
Jay sighed as he turned the key in the ignition. "After the surgery, when he was giving us the update, I could tell there was something he wasn't saying. I didn't want to ask him at the hospital because it's obviously not something good, so I didn't want to make everyone worry more, but I gotta know what it is."
"What would he not tell us?" Hailey asked, now trying to figure out what it could be.
"No idea but were gonna find out."
When they pulled up to Will's, they noticed his truck parked on the street. Jay never said anything about stopping by, so he hoped Will was going straight home after work. The couple walked up the steps and Jay knocked on the door.
"Jay, Hailey, hey?" Will answered, slightly confused.
"Can we come in?" Jay asked.
"Yeah. Yeah, of course. Sorry." Will said stepping out of the doorway. "Can I grab either of you something to drink? A beer?" Will asked as he pulled a beer out for himself?
"I'll take one." Jay replied while Hailey replied with a no thanks.
The three sat at Will's dining room table. "So, I can guess why you're here, but at the same time I can't. I'm assuming it's about Adam?"
"That's exactly why were here." Jay nodded.
"He's holding his own. In fact, he's doing better than anyone could have expected." Will admitted.
"But?" Jay asked.
"What do you mean but? Why does there have to be a but?" Will asked.
"What aren't you telling us? When you first came out to give us an update, there was something you weren't telling us. What is it, Will?"
Will's whole demeaner became a little more serious. He was hoping Jay wouldn't pick up that. "Jay, please."
"Come on Will. We're no leaving here until you tell us."
Will sighed. It had been a long day and he just wanted to go to bed and forget about today. "I told you guys he coded a few times, but each time he coded…" he trailed of, not wanting to relive the moment. "Each time he coded, it was harder and harder to get him back. The third time it happened, they wanted to pronounce him dead."
Hailey gasped and immediately threw her hand over her mouth.
"They actually did pronounce him, but I couldn't give up on him. I didn't care that everyone else gave up on him. I had to keep trying until I knew he wasn't coming back. By some miracle, I got him back. No one, including myself could believe it." Will started crying. "I was so close to calling it quits, but I knew I couldn't face you or the others without knowing I gave it everything I had."
Will and Hailey both now had tears in their eyes. Jay went over to his brother and hugged him.
"He was down for a few minutes Jay. I'm afraid of there being some kind of permanent damage. I mean the odds are already stacked against him." Will finally confessed.
Jay did his best to console his brother who was now full-on sobbing. "Hey. You saved his life Will." Will was just nodding. "Whatever happens next, that's not on you. He's alive right now, as we speak, because of you. At least now he will have a chance."
Will appreciated Jay's efforts of comforting him, but right now all he wanted to do was take a hot shower and to crawl into bed. It had been a long and mentally and emotionally draining day. He was glad when Jay and Hailey respected that decision and headed home.
