Hey guys! Sorry for the short chapter. Struggled a little with it. Its not exactly what I wanted it to be but I needed a filler in order to get the next chapter. I promise the next one will be longer! Anyway hope you enjoy and thanks again for the comments and likes. They definitely help keep me motivated to keep writing.
"I have good news and I have bad news" Will stated as he took a seat at the table. Maggie and Kim were both giving him the look to continue. "The bad news is that his body is still a little too weak to fully breathe on its own." Will noticed the panicked look in Kim's eyes returned. "The good news is that he is strong enough that we didn't have to put him fully back on a ventilator."
Kim was slightly confused. He couldn't breathe on his own, but he didn't need a ventilator. What kind of sense does that make?
"We put him on what's called a non-invasive ventilator. It's basically just a bulkier face mask than what he had on before. The difference is this one holds a seal to his face and forces in more oxygen."
"So, he's gonna be okay?" Kim asked cautiously.
"Well, he's still not out of the woods yet, and despite this little setback, he's still moving in the right direction." Will smiled.
"What about waking him up?"
"We believe we will still be able to begin waking him up come morning time. That's the plan at least. It's sort of up to Adam throughout the night if we stick to that plan or have to push it back some." Will stood up. "Come on, you can go back in the room now."
Kim quickly stood up, tears still lightly rolling down her face, and followed Will back to the room.
It was getting late and Kim was exhausted, but she refused to take her eyes off Adam. It wasn't until Will came back an hour later for his final check of the night, that he convinced her it would be ok for her to get some sleep. "Hey. It's getting late. You should probably get some sleep."
"I know, I just feel like every time I take my eyes off of him, something bad happens." She replied.
"I hate to tell you Kim, but those things can happen even when you're watching him. That's just how these things work."
Kim nodded her head. She knew he was right, but at least watching Adam made her feel better.
Will sat down in a chair next to Kim, and out his hand on her knee. "As a doctor, I'm supposed to tell you everything looks good and he's gonna be okay." He looked down at his watch. "But I'm officially 2 minutes past the end of my shift which makes me here as just a friend."
Kim's eye grew, afraid of where Will was taking this conversation.
"As of now, we still plan on reversing the coma inducing medications in the morning and I'll be honest, it's most likely going to be a long, hard day for both of you. He's going to need you to be there for him, but you can't do that if you're exhausted." He paused as he watched the realization flash across Kim's face.
"You think he'll wake up right away?" She asked, not really knowing how these things work.
"It's hard to say. Once they reverse the medication, it'll probably take a few hours at which point he could wake up fully aware of what happened or completely unaware at all." He thought back to the operating room on day one and how long it took to get him back each time he crashed. He prayed like hell the last two nights that there wouldn't be any permanent damage from that, but he wouldn't know for sure until Adam was awake. He also hated keeping that from Kim, but she had enough on her plate to worry about for now. He didn't need to add any more reasons for her to worry. Before getting sucked too far into his thoughts, he stood up from his chair. "I'm heading out for the night, but I'll be back in the morning."
Kim stood up and gave Will a hug. "Thank you so much for everything you've done the last two days."
"Just doing my job." He smiled back before leaving the room.
Kim sat back down, watching Adam for a few more minutes before finally deciding to get some rest. She was excited for Adam to hopefully wake up in the morning, but also terrified about the thought. She was hopeful it would all go smoothly, but she also prepared for the worst know that Adam never does things the easy way. She kept imagining all the different ways the day could go until she finally drifted off to sleep.
She woke up early the next morning when Kevin arrived. He had promised Adam on the first day that he would be there when he woke up and he was holding true to that promise. Kim appreciated the company and idea of having help with Adam once he was awake.
Adam was never a fan of hospitals, not that anyone really is she thought, but Adam would always come up with any excuse in the book to avoid a trip to one. Luckily, he had been pretty good at avoiding any serious injuries over the last nine years, but the few times she forced him to get checked out, he was a terrible patient. She wasn't expecting this time to be any different.
Trudy and Hailey arrived about 20 minutes after Kevin, with Jay 10 minutes behind them. Hank arrived last. Kim wasn't at all surprised the whole team was here wanting to support Adam.
When the doctor came in, she explained how the process would work and that there was no set time table to how long it would take for Adam to wake up. They all just thanked her and let her do her thing. Once she was done they all waited around, anxiously waiting for Adam to open his eyes.
