The next morning, Kim had reluctantly left the hospital to shower and take Makayla out to breakfast. She knew Makayla was struggling with the whole thing so she wanted to make sure she spent some time with her.

When she walked in her front door, Makayla, who had no idea she was coming, ran to Kim and threw herself into a hug. "I didn't know you were coming home today! Is Adam coming home today too?"

Kim hugged the little girl tight. "No baby, I'm sorry." Makayla's face dropped. "But I figured if it was okay with you, I'd hop in the shower and we could go to that breakfast spot Adam takes you to every Sunday morning."

"Really!? Can I get chocolate chip pancakes?" Makayla's excitement returned.

"You can get whatever you want." Kim stood up before making her way to the shower. She knew their breakfast conversation would focus primarily on Adam and all the questions Makayla had about him, but she also wanted to hear about all the fun things Makayla had been doing over the last three days.

After her shower, Kim and Makayla made their way down the elevator and walked the three blocks to the restaurant. Normally Kim wasn't allowed on their breakfast date. Per Makayla's request, it was always just her and Adam. Kim thought it was sweet that Makayla loved spending so much time with Adam.

When they walked in, one of the waiters immediately approached Makayla, giving her a rather large chocolate chip cookie out of the bakery section. "Hey Mack!" He got down to her level as he handed her the cookie. "You do know it's not Sunday right?" He joked.

Makayla nodded as she took the cookie and looking over at Kim. They had never told Kim about the whole chocolate chip cookie before breakfast thing, thinking she wouldn't approve, and now Kim realized why she was never invited.

"Who'd you bring with you today?" He asked, not recognizing Kim.

"This is my mom. Adam got hurt at work." Makayla responded.

The waiter stood up, shaking Kim's hand. "I'm Peter, Pete for short. Pleasure to meet you. I've heard nothing but great things about you."

Kim shook Pete's hand. "Pleasure to meet you as well." She replied while making a face at Makayla, who just giggled knowing that Kim now knew their secret.

The waiter led the two ladies to Makayla and Adams usually table and took their orders. Makayla got her usual, while Kim ordered French toast and home fries.

"When's can I talk to Adam?" Makayla wasted no time with the hard questions.

Kim decided to lay it all out on the line and not hold anything back. Makayla and Adam were very close and she knew Makayla deserved the truth. "Makayla, honey, you know Adam got hurt really bad right?"

Makayla just nodded her head as she played with her cookie.

"Well because of that, the doctors had to give him medicine that makes him really tired to help control the pain. That's why every time you ask to talk to him, he's asleep." Kim explained.

"But when will they wake him up?"

"They started to yesterday, he opened his eyes a couple times, but he didn't stay awake very long." Kim said.

"So, I could have talked to him yesterday?" Makayla asked, seemingly annoyed.

"No baby. He opened his eyes, but he wasn't able to talk yet. The doctors are hoping either today or tomorrow he'll be able to hold a short conversation. I know you miss him and want to talk to him so I promise, as soon as he's able to, I'll make sure he calls you. Deal?"

Makayla nodded her head as their breakfast came. While they ate, Kim asked her about all the fun things she had been doing while Kim was at the hospital with Adam. She talked about the movie with Trudy, going to the zoo and even a tea party with one of the neighbors that was her age.

When it was time to pay the bill, the waiter told them it was on the house. Pete and Adam had become good friends since they became regulars at the restaurant and he had overheard bits and pieces of the conversation on Adam's condition. He knew it had to be pretty bad so the least he could do was pick up their tab.

Kim had tried to put up a fight, arguing that he didn't have to do that, but Pete wasn't taking no for an answer. Kim thanked him and left a rather large tip on the table in return.

As they walked back to their apartment, Kim explained that she was going to have to head back to the hospital.

Initially, Makayla had put up a fight, wanting to go with her, but Kim explained that kids were not allowed in the section of the hospital that Adam was in. Makayla wasn't happy about it and stomped her way into her bedroom, slamming the door when they got home.

Kim gave her a few minutes before knocking on the door and finding her face down in a pillow crying. "I know you're upset Mack, but as soon as they move him to a different section of the hospital, I'll make sure you can come visit. Okay?"

Makayla didn't even acknowledge Kim, so she put a hand on her back and started rubbing it. "I know this is really hard for you Mack. It's really hard on me too." Kim now had tears falling from her eyes. "But I promise, we will figure it out, okay? Adam is getting better every day. He still has a long way to go, but he needs us to be strong for him okay? You think we can do that?"

Makayla sat up, wiping tears from her face. "I just miss him." She sobbed. "And you."

Kim's heart broke. She was completely torn between wanting to be there for Adam and needing to be there for Makayla. She knew Makayla had been through so much already and didn't deserve any more heart break. Once Adam was awake and talking she promised herself to leave the hospital more to spend time with Makayla. "I know baby. We both miss you too. I promise to try to come home whenever I can. In fact, I pinky promise!" Kim held out her pinky, hoping Makayla would return the gesture.

She had to think about it for a second, but Makayla eventually returned the pinky promise. Kim gave her a kiss on the forehead, before heading back to the hospital, knowing she had to come up with a way to do better for both Adam and Makayla.
