Kevin had stayed with Kim while they were running a few tests on Adam. Trudy had decided to leave in order to take Makayla to a friend's birthday party. Kim was so thankful to have people in her life that not only supported her, but her daughter. She honestly doesn't know she would get through this without them.
After about an hour, Kim started pacing the room. Kevin tried everything he good to help her relax but she refused to listen, not until she had answers about Adam.
At one point, she looked up and seen Will standing at the nurses station which kind of aggravated her. She stormed out if the room, leaving Kevin wondering where she was going, and approached him. "What the fuck was that in there Will!?"
Will put his arm around Kim and redirected her back to Adam's room. He didn't need her making a scene in a hallway where everyone could here.
As they re-entered the room, Kim started again, demanding him to explain what was going on with Adam.
"There are a few possibilities." Will admitted. "When Adam first came in, he crashed a few times during surgery so its possible he could have some sort of brain damage as a result." He felt relief getting that off his chest but was confident that was not the issue. "However, I think we're dealing with something else." He walked over to an empty chair and pulled it in front of Kim, who was seated next Kevin.
Sitting down in front of her, he grabbed her hands until she looked up at him. "A lot of times when a patient is put into a medically induced coma, the medications can cause some very realistic dreams that make it difficult to tell the difference between a dream and reality. I'm pretty confident that that's what we're experiencing with Adam."
"You think so?" Kim asked.
"I do." Will answered honestly.
"What about his legs? Is he going to be paralyzed?" Kevin questioned.
"I'm not going to lie, there is a pretty good chance he could be paralyzed from the waist down." Will paused. "But there's also a decent chance that he's not. That's why I sent him upstairs for tests. It'll give us a more thorough picture of what we're looking at." He looked at his watch. "They should be almost done, so let me head out of here so I can go check on the results."
Kim and Kevin both thanked Will as he stood up and left the room. A few minutes later Adam was wheeled back into the room.
Will returned a half hour later after going over all of Adams test results. "Well, I have mostly good news." He smiled. "I believe the paralysis is only temporary. There is still an extensive amount of swelling that appears to be blocking the communication from the brain to nerves."
"So, he's going to be okay?" Kim asked.
"There is still a chance it could be permanent, but based off of everything I've seen, I'd say there's a good chance he'll walk again." Will smiled.
"What about the job? You think he'll be a cop again?" Kevin asked. He knew he probably shouldn't have asked, but he knew it would be one of Adam's first questions so he wanted to know how to answer.
"Let's just focus on getting him walking first." Will knew Adam was going to want to return to work, but he also knew he had a long road of recovery ahead of him. "Any more questions?"
"How much longer will he be in ICU? Makayla's been dying to see him but she's too young to visit on this floor."
"He's been making steady improvements every day so hopefully he can be moved in the next day or two. I think a visit from Makayla would do him some good." Will stood up, squeezing Kim's shoulder.
"Thank you, Will. For everything." Kim responded as Will left the room.

The next morning, Kim was sleeping on the very uncomfortable couch in the room. When she was startled awake by someone calling her name.
"Kim." Adam mumbled out for the fourth time before finally getting Kim's attention.
Kim jumped off the couch and by Adams side quicker than she intended to. "What's wrong Adam? What do you need?"
"Water." Adam asked for. "I need water."
Kim poured him a cup and held it up while he slowly drank. He only managed a few small sips but it was the most he had in days so Kim was happy with it.
"How you feeling?"
"Like I was hit by a bus." Adam breathed out.
"Yeah, I bet you do. Do you remember what happened?" Kim hoped he remembered something.
Adam thought for a bit before questioning. "I got shot?"
Kim felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. "Yeah. A few days ago." She reminded him.
"Why… Why do I have a neck brace on?" He was almost afraid to ask.
Kim was kind of caught off guard with question. She expected it to come, just not so soon. "One of the uh… One of the bullets hit your spine. The neck brace is just a precaution."
Adam's face instantly went pale. "Am I…" He couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence.
"No.. Maybe. We don't know yet, Adam." As much as she wanted to, she couldn't bring herself to lie. Adam had a right to know if he was going to be paralyzed or not.
"How do we not know yet? Am I or not?" Adam started to get agitated. His heartrate was speeding up and Kim knew she had to calm him down.
"Adam, calm down, please. There is still a lot of swelling where the bullets lodged. Will said we won't know if anything's permanent until the swelling goes down."
"The bullets still in there?" He questioned.
Kim felt like she had already said too much but had it been her in Adam's situation, she would want to know the truth. "It is."
Adam knew that couldn't be a good thing. "Are they gonna take it out?"
"They don't know yet, Adam. Will wants to wait a few days for the swelling to go down. If you regain feeling, then there's a chance they leave it."
"They don't know yet.." Adam laughed sarcastically.
"Look Adam. It's a very complicated injury. Everyone is doing the best they can. It's a miracle you even survived." She knew this was going to be a long, bumpy road for Adam but she wasn't expecting it to come so early.
"Well, if I can't walk, maybe I should have just bled out." Adam bit out.
"Don't you ever talk like that Adam. That's not even funny."
Adam knew he went a bit too far with that comment. "I'm sorry."
"You should be. You scared the shit out of me… out of all us. Did you know you coded? Multiple times!" Kim couldn't hold back anymore. Adams last comment got to her and she wanted to make sure he never vocalized it again.
"No." Adam answered surprised.
"Well, you did."
"Kim," Adam squeezed her hand. "I really am sorry, I just… I don't know how to handle this… If I can't walk… can't return to the job…"
"Hey, we'll cross that bridge when it comes. You can regain feeling once the swelling goes down and this whole conversation will be nothing. Let's just try to stay positive, okay?" Kim ran her thumb over Adam's hand, while standing up to kiss him on the forehead.
"Okay." Adam responded, hoping she was right. "I love you, and I really am sorry."
"I love you too, Adam. I promise we'll get you through this."
