Hey guys! Sorry for the delay. School just started back so I've been super busy with that but I promise to try to update as often as possible. Thanks again for all the likes and comments!
Two days later Adam was finally moved out of the ICU and into a regular room. Adam was excited to finally 'graduate' to a regular room and Kim was excited that she would finally be able to bring Makayla for a visit.
The last two days were rough on Kim. Adam still didn't have feeling in his legs and he seemed to take the frustration out on anyone that entered the room. She was trying her best to be patient with him, knowing how hard this had to be on him, but she was getting to a point where she couldn't take it anymore.
Will and Dr. Janic arrived in Adam's new room shortly after he was transferred. Will managed to hook him up with a corner room with a view. "Hey man, how's the new room?"
"Oh, it's just great." Adam replied sarcastically. He has only been awake for a few days and was already tired of being in the hospital. He could have had the nicest view in all of Chicago, but as long as he was in a hospital room, he wasn't gonna be happy.
Luckily Will knew Adam well enough to know not to take anything Adam said right now to heart so he just responded with his own sarcasm. "We do what we can. Anyway, I'm not sure if you've formally met Dr. Janic, but she's our best spine surgeon."
"Hi Adam. Nice to see you awake and on the mend." She says.
"Thanks Doc." Adam smiled.
Will purposely avoided testing Adams feeling in his legs over the last two days, telling him he needed to let the swelling go down some before they tried again. He felt like day six was a good day to check on the swelling and hope it has gone down enough for Adam to regain movement.
"I'm going to take you upstairs for CT scans and an MRI to check on the swelling. If it has gone down enough were hoping to test for feeling." Dr. Janic stated.
Adam didn't look thrilled. He was already tired of all the tests and had occasionally tried to move his toes even though he knew he wasn't supposed to. Each time he was met with the same result – nothing.
Once the results came back, Dr. Janic and Will walked back into Adams room looking pleased. "Well, we have some good news. Looks like the swelling has gone down." Dr. Janic smiled.
"There is still quite a bit of it, but we believe it's gone down enough to retest." Will added.
Kim was excited to hear that the swelling has gone down, but Adam remained emotionless.
Dr. Janic pulled the blankets off of Adams feet, holding it high enough that Kim nor Adam could see. Kim stayed close to Adam holding his hand tightly in hers. Instead of having him wiggle his toes first, she pulled out a pen. She ran it roughly along the bottom of his right foot, smiled when she got the response she was looking for, then repeated along the bottom of his left. She then put the pen back in her jacket and looked up at Adam. "Can you wiggle your toes for me?" She asked.
She waited a few seconds with nothing. She looked up at Adam, giving him a look.
"I'm trying!" He bit at her.
"Try harder." She pushed.
Adam was frustrated, felt like the whole thing was useless. He's been trying to move his toes for the last two days with nothing, why would this time be any different. Except right before he opened his mouth, it happened.
"Very good." Both Dr. Janic and Will had big smiles on their faces.
"They moved?" Kim asked almost in shock.
"They did." Will responded.
Adam was so relieved he felt like he could cry. He doesn't know what was so different this time than all the other times he tried, but right now he didn't really care. "So, I'm not-?" He couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence.
"No Adam. Looks like you will regain all feeling in your legs." Will stated.
"It's gonna be a long road. Just because you have feeling doesn't mean you can just hop out of bed and start walking. You do still have a serious back injury. It will probably take weeks of physical therapy to fully regain motion." Dr. Janic hated to be the bearer of bad news, but she wanted Adam to still be prepared. "Once the swelling goes down more, we should be able to get you started. We have a few wonderful in-patient rehabs we could send you to to help speed up the process."
"Wait, what? Why in-patient? I can't go home?" Adam asked.
"We don't recommend it." Dr. Janic replied. "A rehab will be able to get you back on your feet much quicker than an out-patient program."
Adam instantly felt deflated. He felt like every step forward, led to two steps backwards.
Will immediately picked up on the shift in Adam's mood and stepped in. "We can talk about that later. There's no need to decide on it right now. For now, let's just celebrate the fact that it seems like you're not going to be paralyzed."
"That's great news! You'll be back to work before you know it!" Kim grinned as she squeezed Adam's hand.
"I hope so!" Adam laughed nervously. He noticed the way Will and Dr. Janics faces changed after Kim's comment so he knew something had to be up. Right now, though, he wasn't strong enough to handle any more bad news so he let it go. He knew he should be excited about gaining feeling, but he really didn't like the idea of having to go to an in-patient rehab and now had a feeling there was a chance he might not be able to return to his job.
