Kim woke up expecting a good day. She got Makayla up and ready for school and stopped by their favorite bagel shop on the way to school. She grabbed bagels for the hospital staff as well as her and Mak. Kim explained to Makayla that Adam was getting better and that she was hoping by the weekend she would be able to bring her in. Makayla was a little bummed to have to wait a few more days but was excited that she was getting closer to seeing him.
After dropping Mak off at school, Kim stopped by another local restaurant to pick up a container of soup. Adam still didn't have much of an appetite, which Will explained was mostly okay for right now. Adam had only been in the hospital for a week and a half and had some pretty serious internal injuries. He wasn't eating anything solid yet. Most of the time he was just drinking a protein shake which Kim knew he was getting tired of. She had hoped by bringing in his favorite soup that she might be able to help get a little more into him.
When she arrived, she dropped the bagels off at the front desk, explaining they were a thank you for everyone being so accommodating to Adam and all his visitors, and then proceeding to Adams room.
As she walked in, she was a little surprised to see him still sleeping. Adam was always an early bird who usually woke up before her. She looked down at her phone to see it was just after 9:00. She put the soup down on the table and took a seat in her normal spot while nonchalantly scrolling through her phone.
An hour passed and there was still nothing from Adam. It was now after 10:00 and she was starting to get worried. Adam rarely slept this late. She was about to get up to go find a nurse when Will entered the room.
"It's like you read my mind." Kim laughed nervously.
"Sorry. I would have been in here earlier but had another patient who was giving me some problems."
"No problem. Is he okay? He never sleeps this late."
Will looked through his clipboard, reading the notes from the night nurse. "Looks like he had a rough night."
Kim's heart sank. This was supposed to be a good day. "What do you mean a rough night? Was there setbacks? Is he okay?"
"He's okay Kim. No real setback. Says he was having a hard time sleeping and was refusing medications. The night nurse finally convinced him to take something around 4 this morning."
Kim felt the relief wash over her, although she was a little annoyed Adam was being stubborn and refusing his meds.
Will sighed. "I feel like that might be partially my fault."
Kim looked up at him confused. "How could him not sleeping and refusing meds be your fault Will? That's silly."
"Last night before I left, I could tell Adam had a lot on his mind." He paused. "So, I sat down and we went over a few things."
Kim could tell Will was a little nervous, which did nothing to ease her nerves.
"He started asking questions about the rehab place and if it was mandatory that he go."
Kim rolled her eyes.
"I explained that it wasn't mandatory but that we highly recommended that he went." He paused again. "Then he asked if he went… if he would be able to return to work once he was done."
"Can he?" Kim asked. Up until this point, Kim believed Adam would make a full recovery since he regained feeling in his legs. She never even considered the idea of him not being able to which she chalked up to the stress and worry about everything. But now, hearing Wills voice and hesitation, she had a bad feeling she was wrong.
"That's where it gets tricky." Will looked over at Adam who was still sound asleep. "I told him he had an option." Another deep breath and he decided to just lay it all out there. "If he leaves the bullet in, there is no way he can return to work, not even a desk job. It would be too risky. I told him we would recommend 100% disability."
Kim did not like what she was hearing. To not even be able to work a desk job? She didn't understand. Not that Adam would be happy with a desk job.
"I then told him we could go in and remove it, but there was a very high chance he would come out of it paralyzed, but on the off chance he didn't, he should make a 100% recovery."
"And he wants the surgery?" Kim rolled her eyes again, knowing Adam would do anything to return the job.
"He hasn't decided yet, but I'm pretty sure that's what kept him up all night." Will responded.
"Thanks for telling me, Will."
"No problem. Whatever he decides, we're all here for him." Will smiled as he left the room.
Kim sat there for a little longer while waiting for Adam to wake up. The whole time trying to come up with reasons to convince him not to get the surgery. He had feeling, he would walk, why risk that for the small chance of being a cop again? To her the risk wasn't worth it.
A little before noon, Adam finally started to wake up. "Morning sleeping beauty." Kim smiled.
"Morning." Adam responded.
"How you feeling?" She was dying to talk to him about the surgery. But she wasn't sure how the conversation would go so she didn't want to jump straight into it.
"Alright, I guess." He was still pretty groggy and in pain, but he didn't feel the need to tell Kim that. At this point he assumed she knew the pain was constant.
"Slept pretty late. It's almost lunch time." She grabbed the brown bag that was holding the soup and began opening it. "I brought you some soup. Figured it would be a nice change from all those protein shakes you've been drinking."
"You're the best." He faked being excited. He still wasn't hungry but he knew Kim went out of her way for him so he didn't want to seem ungrateful.
"You want some now?"
"Not yet. Maybe in a little bit. I just woke up." He knew he wouldn't want it in a little bit but he would do his best to force a few spoonfuls.
"Just let me know when you're ready for it." She leaned down and grabbed a folded-up piece of paper from her purse. "Makayla drew you a get well soon card. I promised her I'd give it to you."
Adam grabbed the paper to take a closer look it. "You can tell her it definitely made me feel better."
Kim smiled, wishing Adam would just tell her himself. "I bought you a few more days, but she's getting pushy. She thinks you don't want to see her."
Adam sighed. He knew he couldn't avoid her forever. She just hated the idea of her seeing him so weak. "That's the furthest thing from the truth, Kim. I just don't-"
"You don't want her to see you like this, I know." Kim finished his sentence. "She doesn't care how you look Adam, she just misses you and she's worried about you. I think seeing you will make her feel better."
"She can come." Adam said reluctantly. He had no idea how long he was going to be in the hospital, especially if he decided to go through with the surgery.
"Really?" Kim was kind of caught off guard by his response. She wasn't expecting him to crack so quick. "Maybe after I pick her up from school we can swing by? We can surprise her."
"Not today." Adam said. "Tomorrow though." He had a lot on his mind today that he wanted to sort out before seeing her.
"Tomorrow will work. Maybe I'll let her skip school tomorrow. Take her to breakfast then here for a few hours." She suggested.
"That works, but please, Kim, just a few hours."
"I promise. I'll take her home around lunch time… As long as you don't sleep until lunch again." She joked, but Adam didn't find it very funny.
He wanted to bring up what Will had told him and what he decided, but he wasn't quite sure how to start the conversation so he decided to put it off for a little longer. "I think I'll have some of that soup now."
"Of course." Kim grabbed the bag. She had a sandwich for herself in the bag so grabbed both the soup and sandwich. "Want me to go warm it up for you?"
"No thank you. Cold is fine." In all honesty, he still didn't even want it.
Kim put it down on the table in front of him and without even thinking about it, handed him the spoon while she ate her sandwich.
She was a couple bites in, when she noticed he still hadn't tried the soup. "You sure you don't want it warmed up?"
"I'm sure." He slowly dipped the spoon into the soup and attempted to bring it up to his mouth, spilling half of it on his hospital gown in the process. Apparently feeding yourself while still pretty weak and wearing a neck brace was a lot harder than it sounded.
Kim noticed the frustration instantly wash over Adam's face and instantly felt guilty. She had watched him drink the protein shakes on his own for the last few days so didn't even think twice about him being able to feed himself, but apparently drinking something out of a straw was a lot harder to spill than something on a spoon. "Here, let me help you." She grabbed the spoon and dipped it into the bowl.
"It's okay. I'm not hungry anymore." It wasn't a lie. He wasn't hungry to begin with. But now he was overly frustrated with not even being able to feed himself. It was in that moment he made the decision. "I'm getting another surgery." He blurted out.
"What?"
"To take the bullet out." Adam responded.
"Adam, don't you think we should talk about this? That's a pretty big decision." Kim was doing her best not to tell him what an idiot he was being.
"There's nothing to talk about." He responded dryly.
"I think there's a lot to talk about." She replied, annoyed.
Adam didn't respond at all. He had a feeling Kim would fight him on this, and in all honesty, he didn't have much fight left in him.
"Look baby." She was trying to tame down her annoyance and be supportive, but she couldn't let Adam go through with this. "We can figure it out. It's not worth another operation."
"I'm getting it, Kim." His response was emotionless, which scared Kim. She knew there was no talking him out of it, which pissed her off a bit. She felt like he was being selfish. Only thinking about himself.
"I guess you got it all figured out then. The hell with what I think, right? You could end up paralyzed, Adam. For real this time. All for what? So you can be a cop again? Do you realize how selfish that is? What about me? What about Makay-"
"I know that, Kim!" This time there was anger in his voice as he cut her off. "You think I spent the whole night awake just because I wanted to? No! I was constantly going over everything in my head. Over and over and over again! Every time I closed my eyes-"
He was cut off by Will entering the room. "I can hear you guys down the hall." He was clearly annoyed. Adams heartrate and blood pressure had raised to a point where alarms were starting to go off. Will needed to get him to calm down and fast. "Kim, I think you should go for now."
Kim didn't even argue. She just grabbed her things and stormed out. On her way out the door she turned around one last time. "Talk some sense into him Will."
Adam just rolled his eyes and Will focused his attention back to him. "Well, that went well." Will was trying to lighten the situation now that Kim was gone.
"I want the surgery." Adam responded. His heart rate and blood pressure were still high, but no longer in a dangerous zone.
"Look, Adam. I told you there's no rush in a decision. I think you and Kim both need to calm down and have a civil conversation about this." He made sure to emphasize the civil part.
"It's my body. My life. I want the surgery."
"Okay then." Will answered reluctantly. He pulled up the surgery schedule on his laptop. Dr. Janic has an opening on Friday. I can get you scheduled for then."
"Nothing sooner?" Adam questioned. Friday was two days away. That gave Kim time to try to change his mind, which he didn't want to do. He just wanted to get this done and over with.
"Unfortunately, that's the soonest available."
"Friday it is then."
