Hi Guys. Sorry it took so long to upload this chapter. I knew exactly how I wanted this chapter to go, but unfortunately didn't have a computer or anything at the time but when it came time to actually start writing it, everything I imaged went completely out the window. I tried to wait it out to see if it would all come back to me but it didn't. As a result, I'm not exactly happy with how this one turned out but still hope you guys enjoy it.
Kim was extremely frustrated. She still had two hours left until she had to pick up Makayla from school so she decided to head to the district. She was technically on leave but she decided to get caught up on some paperwork to help keep her distracted.
She threw her things in her locker room and as she attempted to storm out of the locker room, she ran right into Trudy.
"Sorry Sarge." Kim didn't even make eye contact as she tried to step around Platt.
Trudy blocked her again, preventing her from going around her. "What are you doing here? Better yet… why are you slamming things? Shouldn't you be with Adam?"
"I was with Adam… until Will kicked me out." She answered with an attitude.
"Kicked you out? Did something happen? Is Adam okay?" Trudy suddenly became worried.
"Oh, he's perfectly fine. Just making stupid decisions without talking to me first." Kim was clearly pissed off and Trudy was determined to get to the bottom of it.
She put her hands on Kims shoulders and turned her around to head back into the locker room. "Sit." Trudy pointed to the bench.
"I'm not sitting Sarge. I got shit to get done." Kim tried once again to leave.
"It was a suggestion Burgess. Sit down and tell me what happened." Trudy's voice was stern and Kim knew she wasn't getting out of this.
"He wants to get the surgery." Kim explained.
"Elaborate." Trudy had no idea what surgery she was talking about. She had kept tabs on Adams recovery, even visited him a few times, but never did anyone mention another surgery.
"Apparently last night Will told him he had the option of leaving the bullet in or taking it out. If he leaves it in, he won't be able to be a cop anymore, but he'll be able to walk." She took a breath and crossed her arms. "If he gets the surgery, there's a pretty significant chance that he comes out of it paralyzed." She took another breath. "On the off chance the surgery is successful, they believe he'll make a full recovery and will be able to return to work eventually."
"I see." Was all Trudy responded
"He's just so stupid sometimes Trudy. I get he loves the job, but is it really worth being paralyzed over?" Kim ran her hands through her hair.
"Are you sure that's his only reason for wanting it?" Trudy asked.
"Why else would he do it? You and I both know Adam's in love with this job."
Trudy was now starting to get annoyed with Kim. "Did you actually talk to him about why he wanted the surgery?"
"I tried to, but he got all pissed off at me and that's when Will told me I should go."
"You tried to ask him why he wanted it? Or tried to talk him out of it." Trudy pushed. She knew Kim well, so she can imagine how the conversation went.
"I didn't even have a chance to ask him why he wanted it. He just blurted out that he was getting it. Didn't even want to talk about it. That's a big decision for him to make without talking to me, don't you think? This impacts more than just him."
Trudy laughed. "You know, Kim, for as smart as you are, you can be really dumb sometimes."
Kim was shocked by Trudy's words.
"How many big decisions have you made without talking to him? I'll name a big one… Makayla." Trudy didn't even give her a chance to respond. "And that man continued to stay by your side and supported you."
Kim remained silent. Trudy made a very valid point.
"How can you expect him to include you in big decisions when you don't include him?"
Kim still had no response. It never really occurred to her that she was being unfair. Trudy was right, she did always make decisions without talking to Adam but she never really thought anything of it because she knew Adam would support her regardless of what she did.
"The two of you really need to learn how to communicate with each other. I mean, for Christs sakes, you guys practically have a child together now."
Kim wasn't a fan of admitting when she was wrong, but she would do it if the situation called for it. "You're right. I should get back to the hospital. I need to apologize."
Trudy wasn't expecting her to agree so fast. She had a whole speech planned and everything. "I think you've done enough for today. By the time you get over there and up to his room it'll be time for you to go get Makayla. I'm gonna head Doyle cover the front desk for me and I'll head over and try to figure out what's going on."
Kim looked down at her watch. Trudy was right. Even if she did make it over there, there wouldn't be much time for her to apologize. She still wanted to talk this over with Adam and voice her concerns with why she didn't think Adam should get the surgery but it would have to wait until tomorrow. For now, though, she was grateful for Trudy's wakeup call and the fact that she was going to go visit Adam.
Before Trudy walked out the door, Kim called back to her. "Please let him know that I'm sorry and that I love him." It was something they didn't say to each other much anymore, but they did still love each other. They still have a lot of shit they need to work out before giving their relationship a title, but she was willing to put in the work as long as Adam was too.
Trudy arrived at the hospital to find a sleeping Adam. She took a seat by the window and patiently waited for him to wake up.
Luckily she didn't have to wait long. Within 20 minutes she heard a faint sniffle and seen a single tear running down his cheek. It completely broke her heart seeing Adam like this. "Adam, what's wrong?"
Adam was caught off guard, thinking he was in the room alone. He still had the neck brace on and wasn't able to turn his head and the chair Trudy was sitting in happened to be out of his line of sight. He wiped a tear and tried to put his 'everything's fine' face back on. "What are you doing here?" His voice was emotionless but she could tell he didn't appreciate having company.
"That still didn't answer my question." She replied, ignoring his question.
"You didn't answer mine either. Kim send you?"
Now she knew he was annoyed. "Actually, she didn't. Now will you please tell me what's wrong?"
Adam laughed. "Look at me Trudy. What do you thinks wrong?"
"I'm sorry." Trudy responded. "I just wanted to make sure you didn't need anything."
"I'm fine. You can go now if you want." If he could, he would have turned his head away so that he didn't have to look at her.
"I got Doyle covering the rest of my shift so looks like you're stuck with me for a bit."
Adam made a 'lucky me' face but didn't respond.
Trudy knew she had to tread carefully with her next conversation. Adam has been a ticking time bomb recently and no one ever knew which side of him they were gonna get.
"You want to talk about it?" She asked quietly.
"What? So you can give me shit too? No thanks." He was tired of other people telling him what they think he should do.
"That's not why I'm here, Adam." She had no intentions of giving him a hard time with his decisions. "Look, did I talk to Kim? Yes. Is she upset? Yes. Did she send me? No."
Adam once again just rolled his eyes as he prepared himself for another lecture.
"She told me what happened." Trudy paused waiting for any kind of reaction from Adam. When she received nothing, she continued. "I told her she was wrong."
That got Adams attention.
"And I'm gonna tell you the same thing I told her. If you guys want to make your relationship work, you need to be able to communicate with each other. But that's a conversation for another day. Right now, I'm just here to support you and see how you're doing. So, what's going on? What did Will say?"
"I'm getting surgery Friday afternoon." Adam answered confidently.
"Friday? Like in two days, Friday?" Trudy was kind of surprised at how quick he set it up.
"Yeah. The sooner the better. That way Kim can't keep pulling her shit." Adam was clearly upset with Kim.
"She's just worried about you, Adam. This isn't easy for her." Trudy wasn't necessarily trying to defend Kim or take sides, but she was trying to lessen the anger Adam had towards her a bit so that they could talk.
"Must be rough." Adam responded before going silent. Trudy could tell there was more on his mind so she stayed quiet hoping he would continue and fortunately, he did. "I just… I don't get why she can't support me like I support her? She makes all these huge decisions without talking to me but the one time I make a decision, I get shit for it? Tell me how that's fair?"
"It's not. You have every right to be upset with her right now, but you also need to hear her out." Trudy put up a hand stopping him when he tried to cut her off. "And she needs to hear you out, but ultimately, the decision is still yours and whatever you decide, she needs to find a way to be okay with it."
"Easier said than done." They both knew how stubborn Kim could be.
"I had a talk with her before coming here today. She knows she was wrong earlier. She told me to tell you she was sorry and that she loves you."
"I guess we'll see how sorry she really is tomorrow." Adam wanted to believe her, but a part of him still didn't.
Trudy wanted to steer the topic away from Kim so she focused back on Adam. "This surgery on Friday. Tell me about it."
"They're taking the bullet out. I'll either be paralyzed from the waist down… or I'll be fine." Adam kept his response short and sweet.
"Are the odds in your favor?" Trudy knew a little about the surgery from talking to Kevin and Kim but she wanted to hear from Adam.
"Not really, but I can't leave it in there, Trudy. Just knowing it's there is messing with my head." Adam admitted. "And if I leave it, I'm going to constantly be worried about moving wrong. Will said one wrong move could shift the bullet paralyzing me. It's only a matter of time till it happens."
"Not necessarily. I'm sure they wouldn't have even mentioned leaving it if they thought it posed that much of a threat." Trudy was trying to stay positive about the situation.
"They mentioned it because I regained feeling in my legs and there's a good chance that goes away after the surgery." Adam was close to tears and after a few moments of silence blurted out. "I'm scared, Trudy."
Trudy was shocked by Adam's confession. In a way she knew he had to be, but to hear him admit it was not something Adam typically did. She moved closer to Adam's bed, grabbing his hand in hers. "I know." She responded quietly. What else could she say? Everything's gonna be alright? She wished she could, but she couldn't make a promise she wasn't sure about.
Adam took a shaky breath before continuing his confessions. "Kim think I'm only getting the surgery so I can be a cop again. In all honesty, that's the last reason I want it. I've pretty much given up all hope of being a cop again." He paused and then continued. "I want to be able to carry Makayla to bed when she falls asleep on the couch or have dance parties with her in the living room. I want to dance with Kim at our wedding one day if we can ever get our shit straightened out. It's all the little things I'll never be able to do again if I leave the bullet in there. And I know if I end up paralyzed I won't be able to do those things anyway, but at least I won't be constantly on edge wondering if today's gonna be the day that bullet shifts, cause let's face the facts Trudy, it will shift at some point." He once again had tears rolling down his face, as did Trudy. "At least if I get the surgery, I won't have to live life on edge. I'll be able to hopefully distract myself with some sort of desk job and figure out how to do all those things from a wheelchair. And maybe, just maybe, by some chance, the surgery ends up being successful and I make a full recovery."
"Then let's get that bullet taken out." Trudy smiled as she wiped her tears. Seeing Adam pour his heart out tore at her heart strings. She only wished he would be able to open up and do the same with Kim.
