"She won't what?" Fitz said with a chuckle.
"She won't eat. We try everything," the bald-headed man said.
Fitz had just returned from St. Petersburg after a short two-day trip.
"I don't have time for this," he said with a sigh. "Where is she?"
"Same room," the man replied.
"Go to the kitchen and tell them to make something. Call me when it's done."
"They already have something for her."
Fitz dropped his Louis Vuitton duffle bag in the entrance-way. "Bring it," he said as he walked in the direction of her room on the eastern wing of the villa.
When he walked into the room, Olivia was laying on the bed covered by blankets. Fitz walked to the same beige armchair and sat down and smirked. Olivia was staring at nothing in particular and didn't move when she saw him.
"You're starving, aren't you?" he said. "I find this really interesting because you're a doctor right? So you know and I know that starving is not the quickest way to die. That could take weeks. If you really wanted to die you'd stop drinking water. But you didn't do that, did you?"
Olivia finally looked up. He wore a grey sweatsuit and sneakers this time and he seemed vastly more relaxed than the last time she'd seen him.
"Ahhh. I finally have your attention. You know, I had to wonder why you'd do this and the only thing I could figure out is so you could get me here and cry about calling your mother or about your program spot or whatever but that's a mistake because I guarantee you that I don't give a fuck about the personal details about your life. That is the last thing I'm worried about right now."
The bald man walked in with a tray of food.
"Just let me call her," Olivia begged.
Fitz stood, "don't play with me, Olivia."
"Please. Don't you have parents?" Olivia sat up, "don't you have a mom? Just let me call her and tell her I'm alive and I promise I'll do everything you tell me. I won't try to escape. I swear."
"You have to do that anyway," Fitz said."Felix, drop the tray here."
Felix walked over with the tray and placed it on the bed beside Olivia.
"Sit up," Fitz said as he pulled the sheets from her body.
Olivia sat up reluctantly, weakly.
"Eat," Fitz commanded.
Olivia took the fork and stuck it into the mashed potato and jammed it into her mouth and chewed, then she started sobbing.
"Olivia-"
"I can't stop. I can't stop crying, okay!" she barked.
"Calm down."
"I CAN'T!"
"I can't look at this. When she calms down let me know," Fitz said to Felix as he walked out the door.
"Don't talk about me like I'm not here," Olivia yelled.
Fitz stopped and turned around then walked back to Olivia.
"For such a pretty girl you're very hostile," Fitz teased with a smile.
"It's not funny. It's really not. I have nothing to do with my father. You kidnapped me. You took me from my mom, you took me from the job I've been working towards since I was 10 years old and it's like nothing to you. Just a joke."
Fitz shrugged, "eat your food and don't ever let me have to come in here for stupid shit like this again."
Olivia growled and shoved her tray off the bed. The food splatter all over the floor and on Fitz's pants and shoes.
Fitz's lips pressed into a tight line. "Fine, you don't want to eat, go ahead and starve," he said angrily before walking to the door. "Get a maid to clean that up and tell them to stop bringing food."
Felix nodded.
Two days had passed and she was writhing on the floor, starving. She prayed Fitz would come back. Nothing she'd said to Felix could get him out of the room and when Felix wasn't there it was another man who just stood and stared.
"Please just bring me something. Anything," she said to the guard in the room though she wasn't looking at him.
She heard the door open and popped her head up, praying it was Fitz. Seconds later, a man appeared. She'd seen him in the room the first time Fitz visited her. He was tall with brown hair and his features straddled the line between handsome and ugly.
"Come with me," he said. His voice was softer than she expected.
"I'm starving."
"Come with me," he said again.
"I'm not going anywhere until I get food. Tell your boss I said that," Olivia said defiantly then laid back on the ground. The man walked over to her and lifted her by both arms and threw her over his shoulder. Just the motion of being tousled hurt more than usual in her condition but still she resisted.
"Let me go," she screamed as she pounded into his back with what little energy she had.
He moved, undeterred, and carried her through the door. Olivia looked around in the halls. It was a gargantuan villa. The floor was a type of stone and the walls were high and beige. It was mostly open with many entryways leading to the outdoors.
The man walked her briskly down the hall to large wooden double entrance doors. There were a lot of workers bustling about, seemingly oblivious or complicit. They spoke in Spanish. Olivia realized and wondered if she was in Mexico or Spain or maybe even Columbia. It seemed like Spain but she wasn't sure.
"Where are you taking me," Olivia barked as she kicked her legs and beat into the man's back.
"Jake, bring her here," Fitz said from across the large roundabout driveway where a line of black range rovers waited.
Jake walked over with Olivia kicking and screaming and then dropped her on the floor. She was breathless and exhausted and still wearing the same old baggy jeans and sweater.
Fitz stepped in front of her and stooped down.
"We're going to see your father. When you get there, don't speak, don't move, don't cry, don't do anything unless I tell you."
"Please let me eat. I'm starving."
"You had your chance."
He pulled her up by the arm and shoved her in the back of one of the SUV's and slammed the door shut. On the other side, Jake opened the door and climbed in beside her.
Fitz didn't ride with her, he drove in the car in front. Minutes later, the fleet of cars pulled out of the long driveway. Jake pulled out a blindfold as the car drove.
"Come on," he said as he stretched it open.
Olivia didn't resist. She was too tired to fight.
They hadn't been driving long before she dozed off. Sleep was how she escaped hunger temporarily.
When Olivia arrived, it was only when Jake pulled the blindfold from her eyes that she realized. Then the door opened and it was Fitz again, grabbing her by the arm and pulling her from the seat.
"Oww," she whined as she hobbled out of the back seat.
She smelled seawater and when she stood and looked up, they were by the ocean. She squinted slightly from the bright sun in her eyes.
"I have to pee," Olivia said.
"Shut up," Fitz said as he walked her by the arm towards the rocky precipice by the water. There was another squad of black SUV's already parked in a line.
Eli stepped out of the vehicle in the middle of the line and then a group of other men exited the other vehicles as well.
Behind Fitz, were almost ten men and behind Eli were about eight. The two groups converged with Fitz and Eli stepping forward while the rest of the men stood back. Fitz brought Olivia with him.
They stood for a moment, facing each other before Eli spoke.
"You didn't have to involve my daughter in this."
"Actually, I did," Fitz said, "to motivate you. This is me, helping you, to get my money."
Olivia looked everywhere except at her father who she hadn't seen in years and who she had no intention of speaking to. Her pride wouldn't allow her.
"Let her go, I'll give you your money."
"I'm here. I have more than enough space to carry it with me. Where is it?"
"I need time."
"You're out of time," Fitz said. "But I think in the interest of keeping a promising young surgeon alive and out of what little respect I have left for you, I'll give you two weeks. I want all 5 million in cash and if you don't then I'll kill her and you and your men and I'll take your cars and houses and sell them and see how close that gets me to 5 mil."
Olivia felt dizziness wash her suddenly and overwhelmingly and dropped to the floor. Fitz still had a grip on her which softened her fall. She was still conscious but the dizziness kept her seated.
Eli ran towards Olivia and tried to reach out to her.
"Don't touch her, she's not yours right now remember. She's mine."
"What's wrong with her?" Eli asked.
"She hasn't eaten in a few days. Five...maybe."
"WHAT?"
"Did you give me money to feed her?" Fitz asked rhetorically.
Eli huffed and reached into his pocket and took out a stack of Euros and threw them to the ground.
"Feed her."
"Hand it to me, thank you." Fitz said.
Eli picked up the money from the floor and handed it to Fitz.
"Let me talk to my daughter," Eli asked.
Fitz mulled it over for a few seconds and then when he looked down at Olivia he finally agreed with a nod.
Eli kneeled down and reached out to Olivia but she pulled away.
"Don't touch me," Olivia said softly. "This is your fault."
"I'm sorry-"
"Don't talk to me."
"Olivia- I'm going to get you out of this. I promise."
Olivia chuckled softly, "Just like you did last time."
"Ol-"
"Mom is at the village nursing and rehab center in Brooklyn, she had a stroke a couple of months ago. Her bill is due at the end of the month. It's 2600. I have 8,000 in a savings account. If you let me die here, do me a favor and pay her damn bill. The 8,000 should cover her for another three months by then she should be fully functioning again."
"Don't talk like that. You'll be fine."
"Okay-enough. I'll see you in two weeks," Fitz said.
He held Olivia up by the arm and walked her back to the car. Eli walked in the opposite direction to his car. "I'm gonna kill that son of a bitch if it's the last thing I do," Eli spat bitterly.
Fitz's cars pulled off. He was sitting with Olivia this time.
There was dead silence on the drive back. She didn't sleep this time and with no blindfold on she could see around them as they drove. It was beautiful and it wasn't until she saw a sign on the side of the street that she realized she was in Spain as she'd suspected.
The sharp twist of hunger never left.
On the drive, Fitz texted his assistant.
As they drove to the villa, down a long winding driveway Olivia realized how massive it was. It was almost like a Spanish castle and she rolled her eyes at the nonsensical reasons a man would want to live in a home that large.
When they stopped at the marble fountain in front of the villa Fitz hopped out of the car without a word. A few moments later Felix walked to her door and opened it.
"Let's go," Felix said.
He took her hand and helped her out of the car. They walked back to her room only now there was a pile of clothes on the bed along with a few towels, a robe, and toiletries.
"Go take a shower."
"Why so you can watch me again," Olivia said.
"I won't be there this time," Felix said. "I'll wait outside the room."
She's had two showers since she'd been there and both times she showered in her clothes and let herself drip dry in the bathroom. She was glad to finally have some privacy. It was vastly better even if she was still starving.
Olivia took the pile of clothes and toiletries to the bathroom and then closed the glass doors behind her then she pulled the drapes across the glass to block the view.
She took a hot shower and washed her hair in the mostly glass shower. Afterwards, she pulled on a towel robe and brushed her teeth. The toothpaste tasted so good in her mouth she could eat it but she knew better.
When she stepped out of the bath, still wrapped in her robe, her room was empty and there was a tray of food with steam rising from the surface on her bed.
Olivia dashed over to her bed and took a bite of bread. It was warm.
"Oh my god," she mumbled to herself as she chewed.
There was also soup and a small salad with grilled chicken and spinach and a glass of water and some sort of juice.
Olivia sat on the bed and picked up the small ceramic bowl of soup and took a sip. Tears came to her eyes as she drank the hot soup.
Then, the door opened and Fitz walked inside. She prepared herself.
Fitz walked across the room and stood beside her bed.
"I know none of this has anything to do with you. I know it's not fair," he began, "but this is the life your father chose and this is what comes with it."
Olivia shrugged, "thanks for the food."
"I planned on feeding you whether or not he paid but let's call it a happy coincidence."
Olivia shrugged lightly and bit another piece of her french bread. She was still ravenous.
Fitz reached into his pocket and pulled out one of his burner phones.
"Here," he said, "call your mother. Keep it under a minute."
Olivia's eyes opened wide and then they swelled with grateful tears.
"Ugh, don't look at me like that," Fitz said, "just call her. Hurry up."
Olivia snatched the phone from his hand and dialed as quickly as her fingers could manage then she put the phone on speaker. The phone rang thrice before Maya's voice answered the phone, dry and hoarse.
"Hello?"
"Mommy?"
"Jesus christ," Maya cried out, sobbing as she recognized the voice immediately, "Livie, oh Livie, my daughter. Oh god."
"Mom- I don't have time, I just wanted you to know I'm okay," Olivia said through stifled sniffles.
"Where the hell are you? That man that was following you, did they beat you, did they rape you-"
Olivia closed her eyes, "-no one was following me. I just made it seem that way. I was overwhelmed with working so much and I just had to leave."
"What- I-I don't understand- no one took you? You're safe."
"I'm safe," Oliva responded only to hear her stomach growl.
"Olivia, I have half of Boston looking for you. Why-"
"Mom, I just wanted you to know I was safe. Don't tell anyone I called you. I love you. Don't expect to see me anytime soon. I'm sorry. Bye."
"Olivia- don't you dare hang up. Do you have any idea what I've been through-"
Olivia hung up quickly and handed the phone back to Fitz, biting back the feeling of nausea that overcame her. She was grateful there was no food in her stomach to throw up.
"Why did you tell her that?"
"It'll be easier if," Olivia stopped and corrected herself, "when you have to do what you have to do."
Fitz sighed, "you really have no faith in your father."
She shrugged as the words caught in her throat, "I know the man, Maybe he'll give you a half- at most, but he won't give you everything."
"Let's hope it doesn't come to that."
"Will you?" Olivia asked, "actually do it?" her voice broke on the last word and suddenly all the emotion she felt during her call to her mother rushed back to the surface.
Fitz thought for a moment then he answered as truthfully as he could allow himself, "we'll see."
Olivia took a breath, trying to keep the vomit down.
"You can walk around the villa. There's a pool and a tennis court and a theater room, you can use it. I'll have my assistant get you some more clothes tomorrow."
Fitz turned and headed towards the door.
"Book?" Olivia asked as she wiped her wet eyes, "can I have some science books?"
Fitz nodded.
