Olivia woke early with Fitz's arms wrapped around her naked body. He was snoring lightly. She took a breath and stretched for her phone to turn off her alarm quickly before it woke him then she slowly pulled his arm from her. Fitz pulled her back and cocooned her in his arms.
"Two more minutes," he mumbled in his sleep.
Olivia smiled as he held her. His hands began to roam up and down her body and as the seconds ticked by his cock stiffened behind her.
"You didn't do enough to me last night?" Olivia said with a smile.
"Not even close," he groaned hoarsely.
"Your two minutes are over," Olivia teased.
Fitz leaned up and flipped her over then opened her legs. "My two minutes hasn't begun."
She giggled then the sound of her cell phone ringing broke them both from bliss. Fitz leaned up.
She frowned and grabbed her phone. It was Maya, calling her at 4:10 in the morning.
"She knows I'm up for work," Olivia said with a sigh.
"No, she just sensed I had a boner and didn't want me to put it in you," Fitz complained.
Olivia laughed, "stop, it's not funny." Then she sobered, "I should answer right?"
He sighed, "if you wanna talk to her answer, if not then don't."
"So helpful."
Olivia stared at the phone, unsure of what to do until it stopped ringing.
"I should've answered, she's been calling all yesterday and thanksgiving but she's never called this early, maybe something's wrong."
"She misses her daughter, that's the only thing that's wrong."
"Well don't make me feel bad…"
"I can't make you feel anything, only you can do that."
Olivia rolled her eyes, "like I said, very helpful." she sighed and leaned up then walked to the bathroom and brushed her teeth then set her bath in the tub. After wrapping up her hair, she stepped in the warm water, sat in the tub, and leaned back with her eyes closed, her mind was now taken with thoughts of Maya.
Minutes later she felt someone hovering over her and opened her eyes. Fitz stared down at her naked with a slight smile.
He stepped in the tub with an erect penis and Olivia smiled and looked away. Fitz leaned back at the opposite side and smiled. "I can't believe you have me up at 4 in the morning."
Olivia leaned up and crawled to him at the other side of the bathtub and kissed him. "I didn't wake you, your erection did."
Fitz wrapped his arms around her and pulled her body against him. Maya disappeared from her thoughts as she felt for his erection and raised her hips then lowered herself on him.
"Fuck-" she gasped then covered her mouth.
He took her nipple in his mouth and sucked hard as he reached into the water and grabbed her ass and squeezed.
"Ahhh-" Olivia moaned into his mouth as she held on the sides of the tub. Fitz moved from her nipples and slowly crawled up to her neck, kissing and sucking as he thrust quick and with purpose in the tub. Water splashed all around them from the force.
Olivia closed her eyes and bit her lips, "give it to me," she cried.
Fitz wrapped his hands around her throat and pressed his thumb against her clavicle, holding her in place on top of him as he thrust faster. Her breasts bounced up and down on her chest. She grabbed them and squeezed her nipples.
It was so fast, she was dizzy and after they both orgasmed two minutes into it she dropped her head on his chest with her arms wrapped around his neck tightly, clinging to him for dear life.
"Fuck…" Fitz breathed out with a smile. "I haven't had this many morning woodies since high school."
Olivia tried to lean up but couldn't.
"Don't ever wake up with me again. I'll never want to go to work."
Fitz laughed and sat up in the tub with Olivia still on him.
She finally took a breath and leaned up slightly so she could gaze at him then cupped his cheeks and kissed him softly.
She shifted slightly and realized she was beginning to get sensitive and gently raised her hips from him. Fitz pulled out and immediately a gush of water filled the gaping hole he left behind.
Olivia smiled and kissed him again.
She was dressed in her jeans and the same sweater as the day before.
"I need to get some clothes from my apartment, I need something to wear while I get the things I bought cleaned."
"If you insist, when would you want to go?"
"It has to be next Monday, she'll be home all weekend."
"Just call the housekeepers and have them launder the clothes. Take out the ones you want clean and have them pick it up."
Olivia let out a breath, "okay."
She walked quickly to the pile of garment and shopping bags and quickly searched through piles of Gucci, Dior, Chanel, Jacquemus, and Bottega Veneta until she found a few pairs of $300 jeans she bought. She found some sweaters and underwear and put them in a pile but for a moment she had to stop and look at all her things. Things she's always wanted but never imagined owning for another decade.
The total was just a few hundred short of $35,000 which was about 70% of her yearly salary. Just the math blew her mind. She almost spent her salary in a day.
"What?" Fitz asked as he watched her staring.
"Nothing…just...thank you. I had fun yesterday. I can't believe I have all these things now. They're gorgeous and way too expensive but still, I'm happy to have them."
Fitz walked to her and stopped behind her, kissing her shoulder softly before he spoke.
"You're welcome. Do you want breakfast before you leave?"
He'd ordered her food before he joined her in the bathroom but it still wasn't there which was unusual for the hotel.
"I'd love nothing more than a Four Seasons breakfast but I have to head out, I lost a lot of time fooling around in the bath with you. I'll have to get the hospital cafeteria breakfast."
Fitz moved his hand down to her stomach and caressed it. The first time he'd done that since she told him she was pregnant.
"Are you sure you'll be okay if you do that? You and the kid?"
Olivia smiled, "yes, me and our baby will be okay." She turned to him and kissed him softly on the lips. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"I'm taking you to work-" Fitz said, confused as to why she was telling him goodbye.
"Oh- you don't have to... I didn't expect you to."
"Olivia- why would I shower and get dressed?"
"I thought you only woke up because you wanted to have sex."
He chuckled, "and why did I get dressed?"
"You probably had a busy day-"
He laughed again, "doing what? Having meetings and calls?"
"I don't know," she laughed slightly embarrassed. "It's okay, I can go- wait- is it because of Marco's people?"
He chuckled, "I'm dropping you to work because I want to."
Olivia's mouth fell. "Oh-"
"Unless you don't want me to?"
She shook her head, "no- it's not that- I'm just not used to this so…" she ended her sentence there and couldn't find another word to break the silence.
"Come on," Fitz said, after realizing she didn't plan to add anything else.
Olivia grabbed her phone and laptop and threw them in the Louis Vuitton tote bag she unwrapped last night. She checked that her hospital ID, wallet, and prenatal tablets were in the tote then she grabbed it and headed out after Fitz slipped on a jacket and shoes.
"Can I drive it?" Olivia said as the valet parked the car in front of them and approached them with the key.
"It's your car," Fitz said.
Olivia smiled and walked around to the driver's seat and strapped herself in. Fitz had pushed the seat much too far back for his long legs to fit so she had to fiddle with the button at the side of the seat until she was able to adjust it then she pulled the back of the seat forward.
"Oh god," Fitz said laughing, "you take dorky to a new level."
"It's not dorky to want to see the road, Fitz!"
She pressed the ignition and the car purred on. She reversed slowly before pulling out of the spot. She was driving painfully slow and so carefully it was almost dangerous.
"You're kidding me?"
"This is a brand new car, I'm not gonna crash it."
"I'm not driving with you again if this is how you drive."
"I'm just being careful."
"Drive!"
"Fine," she said stubbornly as she sped up just a bit. "You're not driving with me again either."
Fitz chuckled but didn't respond.
As Olivia drove she heard the sound of sirens and saw a commotion up the street.
"Wonder what's going on?" she thought aloud.
There was a slight delay with traffic but as she drove further up the street she saw there was an accident. A car crashed into a bus stop but it looked as if there was a pedestrian stuck between the car and the pole. The ambulance had just arrived.
"I have to stop and see what's going on," Olivia said quickly as she pulled up the car on the curb.
"Go, go, it's okay," Fitz said.
Olivia unlocked her seatbelt and hopped from the car and ran over the scene.
"I'm a doctor, I'm a doctor," she said quickly.
She saw a paramedic she knew and called him, "Rob," she yelled.
Fitz got out of the car. There was chaos with spectators blocking the way.
"Come-" Rob called.
Olivia meandered through the crowd until she could see the victim, stuck under the car and pole. She was unresponsive.
Olivia quickly kneeled beside her and checked for breath sounds.
"How long has she been down?" Olivia asked.
"We don't know, we just got here, but they called it in about 5 minutes ago and she was responsive when they called."
Olivia zipped open the woman's jacket and tapped her chest at several points then she checked her pulse and her pupillary response.
"Her chest isn't clear," she said aloud. "And there's bleeding in the brain, you can't move her."
Another paramedic joined them.
"We need to get these people out of here," Rob said to them.
"The cops are a few minutes out," one of them replied.
"I need gloves, a 10 blade, and a chest tube, quick, quick, quick," Olivia said, "and betadine."
The paramedic ran to the van and brought back all the items Olivia asked her.
"Open up her shirt," Olivia ordered Rob. "spread betadine over the external intercostal region on the right side."
He opened the woman's shirt while the other paramedic named Jason opened the gloves and Olivia pushed her hands into them. Rob splattered betadine on the woman's chest.
"Gimme the 10-blade," Olivia said quickly.
The police arrived.
Jason handed Olivia the 10-blade and she pressed her index finger into a space between the woman's ribs and sliced through her flesh. Blood spattered out of her chest and immediately it inflated.
"Gimme the tube, quickly," Olivia said.
Rob handed her the small tube from a kit in the ambulance and she stuck it between the space in her opened chest.
Olivia checked her pulse and it was stronger.
"Okay- she's breathing, now her head." she moved up quickly and checked her pupillary response with a flashlight from Rob.
"Burr holes- I-I have to make burr holes. I need a drill, quick, she cant be down this long."
"Drill- I don't have a drill," Jason said.
"Find one," Olivia barked as she felt around the woman's skull for an ideal spot to make an incision.
He groaned, annoyed, and stepped away.
At the temporal lobe, she made a small incision and opened the flap of skin by the woman's hairline. She looked around for the drill then saw an officer rushing towards her with a drill from the back of a cruiser. He handed it to her quickly but Olivia didn't take it.
"Rob, I need you to sanitize it, quickly, 2 seconds."
He grabbed the drill from the officer and doused it in betadine, avoiding the latch where the battery was kept.
Olivia took the drill and pressed it into the flap of skin and began drilling. The spectators looked away in horror. She heard a collective gasp.
"Oh god, what is she doing?" one woman screamed out.
The police officers surrounded Olivia and began pushing everyone back.
She drilled until she penetrated the skull then she stopped and checked for bleeding. When a gush of blood draining from the wound ran down the woman's face Olivia thanked god she found the right spot on her first drill.
"Suction and some gauze" Olivia said.
Rob handed her a small baby suction tool from the kit beside him, "it's all we have."
"This is perfect," Olivia said as she sucked the blood from the wound with the tool then padded the wound with gauze.
Moments later the woman opened her eyes.
"Yes!" Olivia rejoiced, she heard the paramedics and EMT do the same. She checked her pupillary response again.
"Her pupillary response is good so brain damage is likely very minimal."
The woman attempted to open her mouth but Olivia stopped her, "don't speak, you have a lot of injuries. You were in an accident but we're gonna take care of you, okay?"
The woman attempted to nod but Olivia stopped her again. "You can't move. You must stay as still as possible, okay? Just blink twice for no and once for yes."
The woman blinked.
"Good."
Olivia still had her hands pressed against the head wound.
"where's the driver?" Olivia asked.
"Fled the scene, they're running the plates now, he or she has to be injured so they'll show up," one of the paramedics said.
"We need to move her," Jason said.
Olivia remembered her name, it was Jason, and though she didn't know him well, she remembered him for his know-it-all attitude and his aggressiveness towards residents.
"Are you crazy, you can't move her," Olivia said.
"Listen, I let you drill into her head because that was your job, my job is to take her to Mass Gen hospital, or are you planning to sit outside in 50-degree weather all morning."
"You can't move her until-"
"You're not my boss, you're a resident so I don't take orders from you."
"Rob?" Olivia said, hoping for backup.
"Sorry, he's my supervisor."
That was when Olivia realized why he acted that way.
"Half her body is under the car," Olivia pointed out.
Jason kneeled on the ground and looked under the car.
"We can pull her out. We need to get her to trauma ASAP if she's gonna survive."
"I'm not letting you kill my patient," Olivia said. "If you move her she could throw a clot and stroke out. We have to lift the car off her, find the bleeding and pack the wound if need be then lift her at a 90-degree angle. You can't pull her from under it."
"I've been doing this for 25 years, little girl. I've had to deal with more pampered little know it all interns and residents who think just because they have two little letters beside their name that makes them god. I'm going to do my job and you're not gonna stop me." Jason leaned down so only Olivia could hear. The site of the incident was incredibly loud with Sirens and chatter of spectators. "Now move or I'll move you."
"Are you threatening me?" Olivia asked. "if don't move from the patients you'll physically move me?"
Jason didn't respond.
"Hey, what's going on here?" one officer asked.
"If the doctor thinks you can't move her then we shouldn't," another police officer said.
"She's not fully a doctor yet, she's just a resident, a student," Jason said. "I've been doing this for a quarter of a century."
Both police officers nodded, happy to take Jason at his word.
Olivia took a breath and moved the pad from her head. "I'm monitoring her in the ambulance."
"Fine," Jason said, smugly.
The woman blinked twice, in protest. Olivia looked down and noticed.
"The paramedics are going to move you," Olivia said, "I'll be right by your side."
"I'll be right here, okay?" Olivia said as she looked down at the woman.
She squeezed her eyes shut and opened them.
Olivia moved from beside the woman on the floor. The paramedics and EMT brought over the stretcher and lowered it to the ground. They carefully surrounded her and began pulling her from under the car.
"Very carefully," Jason said, "we wouldn't want to prove Ms. Know-it-all right," he joked.
"I need to inspect the site of impact," Olivia said.
Jason opened her jacket revealing the woman's stomach. "She's not bleeding out, little doc. She's hemorrhaging internally and they can take care of it in trauma."
Olivia rolled her eyes then she remembered Fitz was a spectator. She turned briefly and found his eyes not far away. He looked incredulous that she seemed to back down though he couldn't hear the conversation between them over the loud sirens he was sure that was what happened. She shook her head softly and mouth to him that it was okay.
"Hold her-" she heard Rob scream.
When Olivia turned around, the woman was seizing on the stretcher, frothing at the mouth. She ran over and just as she warned, the worst case happened.
"Time of death 06:27am," Olivia said, reading the time from her watch.
The team of paramedics loaded the body into the back of the ambulance. Jason took a breath and approached Olivia after they put the woman's body inside.
"Look-"
"Don't say a word to me," Olivia said as she turned and headed towards Fitz who was behind the police barrier now.
"I have to travel with them to the hospital, it's protocol."
Fitz reached for her cheek, "you're fine, you're tough."
Olivia nodded and took a breath, "I need my bag."
Fitz walked to the car and reached into the passenger side and grabbed Olivia's Louis Vuitton tote then he placed it over her shoulder and kissed her lips. "Let me know when your day slows down, I'll come to see you."
Olivia nodded and headed back to the ambulance and climbed into the back. It was a short drive to the hospital. The ambulance docked in the ambulance bay and Olivia was the first to exit. Abby was there as well as two other residents who were on the trauma/emergency rotation.
"DOA," Olivia said.
The team of paramedics loaded the stretcher from the back and pushed it up the ramp and down the hall.
"What happened?" Abby asked.
"I told the paramedic Jason not to move her and he told me off and moved her, now she's dead."
"Yeah but I meant what happened, I've been calling you for two days and you haven't been answering, and-" Abby stepped back and looked at her, "where've you been. Is that bag fake? You can't afford a Louis Vuitton bag, like that. Where'd you get that."
Olivia rolled her eyes, "seriously Abby, someone just died."
"We're doctors, someone is always dying," Abby responded.
Olivia ignored her headed inside the doors of the hospital.
Olivia walked out to the hospital waiting room. A few hours had passed and they'd found the woman's family, her mother and sister were waiting shakily by the blue seats in the room.
Olivia took a breath before walking to them, the attending trauma physician accompanied her but Olivia did most of the talking since was she was the physician on the scene.
"Hello, are you the mother and sister or Reyna Salcedo?" Olivia asked.
They both nodded.
"This morning Reyna was in an accident. I was on the scene and administered medical care to the best of my ability, I tried everything I could but unfortunately, I couldn't save her. She passed away at 6:27 am."
Reyna's mother cried out and her sister consoled her. Olivia gave them a moment to mourn before she began again. "After examining her we determined her cause of death was a mixture of several factors but most pertinently she had a large clot from massive internal hemorrhaging at the site of impact, upon attempting to move her, the clot dislodged and migrated to the brain stem, blocking oxygen to the brain and causing a stroke."
Olivia took her mother's hands, "I'm so, so, so sorry for your loss. When you're ready to see her, I can take you to her."
"Was she in pain?" the woman asked tearfully.
Olivia took a breath. "I don't think Reyna felt any pain, when there's that much trauma and shock, there's also a lot of adrenaline- I don't think she felt anything."
"Was she awake? At any point?"
"She was. I saw her eyes, they were green with a little hazel."
A fresh wave of tears came from her mother and sister.
"She was awake after I performed a trepanation on her temporal lobe to relieve her intracranial bleeding in the field. She was awake and alert enough to respond to questions after the procedure."
"She could talk?" her mother asked.
"No but I asked her to blink twice for no and once for yes."
"So when did she-"
"When she was moved- she began to seize and I couldn't bring her back."
"So why did you move her?"
Olivia took a breath, "she needed to be brought to the hospital, she needed medical care beyond the scope of what I could provide at a bus stop with no proper medical equipment."
Her mother nodded, "I can't believe this is happening."
"I'm so sorry," Olivia said again. "Please let me know if you want to see her."
The woman nodded, "please, let me see her."
Olivia nodded and took the women to see Reyna.
It was almost 1pm before she could take a break to eat, take her prenatal vitamins, and text Fitz. She was simultaneously ravenous but had no appetite. She scarfed down water and a turkey wrap in the cafeteria of the hospital. Abby approached her again.
"Hey, are you okay?"
Olivia nodded. "Starving," she said as she took another bite. "I'm gonna have so much gas after I eat this, I'll need tea."
Abby chuckled, "this DOA has had you busy all morning."
"Yeah well it isn't just any DOA, the paramedic deliberately went against my medical advice and ended up killing that woman now I have a meeting in twenty minutes with a bunch of administrators and that stupid paramedic and the police and the chief."
"He's gonna get canned."
"I think that might be the least of his problems but it's not just about him, I should've fought harder."
"What are you gonna do, tackle him to take care of a patient, that's not your job."
"If he didn't move her, she'd still be alive, I know that for a fact now after we examined her."
"They're supposed to listen to the one-scene physician, especially when the physician is from a partner hospital so he's fucked., not you."
"The chief won't see it that way. What if I get suspended?"
"You won't."
Olivia's phone chimed and she saw Fitz text her back. She grabbed her phone and checked quickly.
Fitz ? : What time do you want me to come? I'll bring you lunch.
She smiled and texted back that he should come around 6pm. He responded immediately.
Fitz ? : so dinner then huh?
She responded yes with a smiley face.
"Who is that?" Abby asked.
Olivia thought for a moment before responding.
"I met someone."
"When? You never go anywhere?"
"It doesn't matter when. I met someone and I like them."
"A lot?" Abby asked.
Olivia nodded.
"Aww, can I meet him?"
Olivia shrugged, "I don't know."
"Why not? Is he ugly- is it Herman?"
"What? No!"
Abby chuckled, "okay then so let me meet him. I'll tell you if he's okay."
"I don't really care about anyone's opinion of him, actually."
"Ouch," Abby said. "That's kind of rude. You've met guys I've dated, you check them out and tell me if they're weird or creepy or if there's something I'm missing. It's our thing."
"I know, I'm not trying to be rude, I just really like him so-"
"Don't like him too much because when you finally have sex with him and it sucks, it'll be a bummer."
Olivia didn't respond.
"Oh my god, you did it, didn't you? That's why Maya's been freaking out. You met someone and you're having crazy sex and she's losing her god damned mind. I love it. This is delicious."
Olivia shook her head, "did she call you again?"
"She's always calling me, asking me where you are."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I got tired of telling you and when I can't really get in touch with you, I don't really have a chance to tell you."
Abby chuckled, "so he's who you've been hanging with."
Olivia shrugged.
"And banging with," Abby added.
Olivia finally shook her head and chuckled as she took another large bite of her turkey wrap.
"Is it good?"
"I'm not gonna answer that," Olivia said with a full mouth.
"Did he buy you that bag?"
Olivia thought for a moment then nodded.
"Holy shit. That's a $2500 bag. Can I borrow it?"
"No!" Olivia said with a chuckle as she wondered what she would say if she really knew how much money Fitz spent on her.
"Is he old? Is he a sugar daddy?"
"He's 29."
Olivia's pager chimed she pulled it from her waist and checked to see who wanted her.
"Stewart is paging me, I have to go."
Olivia took another bite of her turkey wrap and then wrapped it up.
"Before you leave, what's the living situation with you and your mom because I still need a place to stay."
"I'm moving out so if you want to move in, call her and tell her you're moving in, you have my permission," Olivia said as he quickly hurried away.
"YOU'RE A DOCTOR AREN'T YOU? HOW DARE YOU CEDE CONTROL OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY TO A DAMN PARAMEDIC, MUCH LESS ALLOW THAT WOMAN TO LOSE HER LIFE BECAUSE OF IT," the chief of surgery yelled.
Olivia sat at the conference room table as the chief barked angrily.
"You arrived at the scene," he said as he paced, "you accessed her and realized she wasn't breathing then performed a thoracotomy to reflate the lung, I would've done the same. Then you judged she had a brain bleed and performed trepanation. Good, great actually then you just let them kill her. WHERE THE HELL IN YOUR TRAINING DID YOU LEARN THAT!" he fumed.
"Let's calm down," one officer said, "We really need that statement from Dr. Pope."
The chief took off his glasses and took a deep breath."Go ahead-" he said.
The officer turned to Olivia, he was the same one at the scene this morning, "please, can to recount the events of this morning. We need a record of it."
Olivia took a breath.
"I was driving to work. I saw a commotion and when I judged there to be a medical emergency, I pulled over at the scene to offer assistance. I arrived on or around the same time as the ambulance. Rob, a paramedic was the first to be by Ms. Salcedo's side. I was the second. I judged her condition to be extremely severe, she was unresponsive and she was covered by the automobile involved in the crash from just under her sternum. I knelt beside her, checked for breath sounds and pupillary response. Both were negative. I determined her respiratory cessation was more important and urgent than a possible brain bleed so I decided to tend to that first. I opened her jacket and determined her lung had collapsed and filled with fluid. I performed a thoracotomy and she resumed breathing."
"Did anyone help you?" the officer asked.
"The team of paramedics grabbed the supplies I requested which were a 10-blade, chest tube, gloves, and betadine. I asked Rob to spread the betadine fluid over the external intercostal region and then I inserted the blade and drained the blood from the lung and reflated it. Ms. Salcedo resumed breathing."
"What happened next?"
"I moved on to the next urgent medical emergency which was, based on Ms. Salcedo's symptoms, A brain bleed resulting in swelling. I felt around the frontal and temporal lobe and I felt a slight pressure at the temporal lobe on the right side. I decided that was where I would perform the first burr hole. I requested a drill and I believe it was you, Officer Danson, who gave me a battery-operated drill. I was correct about the site of the bleeding and upon performing the trepanation and suctioning the blood from the wound, Ms. Salcedo regained consciousness with what appeared to be minimal brain damage based on a pupillary response at the time. She was able to follow instructions, follow light and faces with her eyes, blink in response to questions at my direction."
The officer nodded.
"What happened next."
"Jason, the paramedic decided she needed to be moved in order to receive further care. I advised against it."
"Why?"
"I judged there to be severe internal bleeding, though I hadn't yet had a chance to access the lower half of Ms. Salcedo's body."
"How did you know that?"
"Just based on the position of the car and the position of her body and the impact with which it seemed she was hit I had a pretty clear - in my opinion- idea of her likely injuries and the severity."
"Okay, continue please," the officer said.
"Jason refused. I then advised that Ms. Salcedo couldn't be pulled. Her chance was to have the vehicle lifted off her and that her stomach be accessed and that if there was an opened wound it be packed. I advised she be lifted at a 90-degree angle to avoid a shift in her internal organs or migration of clotted tissue of blood. I advise this might cause a stroke and possibly death. Jason refused, he cited his experience, he called me a pampered little girl and told me he would do his job, which was to transport Ms. Salcedo to the hospital and I couldn't stop him and if I did he would physically stop me. I tried-"
"WHAT?" the chief of surgery barked, "he did what?"
"Please, the officer said, "allow her to finish."
The chief took a breath and nodded for Olivia to continue.
"I tried to reason with another paramedic, Rob, but he said that Jason was his supervisor. Jason or Mr. Rodney, I guess, then proceeded to direct his team to pull Ms. Salcedo from under the vehicle."
"How soon after did she seize?"
"Seconds after being placed on the stretcher."
"What did you do?"
"Everything I could. She became tachycardic moments after seizing, I used the manual paddles to try to respond to her heartbeat but I was unsuccessful. She then arrested and performed manual CPR. I couldn't bring her back. I called the time of death at 6:27 after exhausting every avenue available to me."
"Thank you."
The officer then collected a statement from Jason who omitted his words and Rob who confirmed Olivia's words Olivia said after Jason threatened her. There were other members of the paramedic and EMT teams who also gave statements.
At the end of the meeting, the chief asked Olivia, Jason, and the chief paramedic to stay back.
"Mr. Johnson, I expect Mr. Rodney to be suspended and I don't want him or this team near another patient being transported to Mass Gen again."
The chief paramedic stood, "my guy had a lapse in judgment. He's been on the job for 25 years, he has experience in the field, you had a resident ordering him around-"
"Physically threatening a doctor and carelessly killing a patient- you call that a lapse in judgment?" he said angrily. "Protocol states that the doctor on the scene has authority over emergency personnel. I don't care if it's a resident. You're lucky it was a damn good resident you were stuck with. I don't care how much experience he has, he isn't a doctor and he doesn't get to defy doctor's orders because of his experience. By your standard, a 25-year court stenographer, because of experience in the courtroom, can better defend someone than a 3rd-year lawyer."
"Look, I apologize, this- no one wants a lawsuit or charges, I'll do what I have to do on my end. We'll talk, chief."
"There will be charges. Miss Salcedo's mother will be filling them, only now, I know that my resident is in the clear."
The group of them headed out. Olivia was left alone with the chief surgeon now.
"You're the best resident in this program. That's not my opinion, your evaluations and the stats on your patients prove that. You're also the youngest in your year. You saved that woman's life and then you lost it. You might not have any legal liability but I'm disappointed in you. I blame you for that woman losing her life. Don't you ever let someone question your authority again, let alone let someone die because of it. You're a doctor. Act like one!"
Olivia nodded and left the conference room.
Fitz waited for her at the entrance of the hospital and as soon as she walked out she saw him.
"Hey," he said.
The word got stuck in her throat and she couldn't return the greeting, not with a smile.
"Shitty day huh?"
She nodded.
"Are you still hungry?"
Olivia shook her head then tears came and she wiped them. "I'm fine."
Fitz wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into his chest as she sobbed uncontrollably. He waited until she calmed.
"What do you want to do?"
"I just want you to hold me. They're gonna page me any second."
"I brought you food. You don't wanna eat?"
Olivia leaned up, "I won't have time." she let out a breath, "phew, I feel so much better. Wow," she said with a smile. Fitz leaned down and held her by the cheek and kissed her lips.
"You're welcome," he ribbed.
Olivia shoved him playfully and kissed him, "shut it," then she took a moment to think, "I just realized my hormones might have been on overdrive. You probably evened me out."
"So it wasn't because your boss was chewing your ass out."
"Oh no, that, definitely but that normally wouldn't make me cry."
Fitz kissed her one more time, "come on." They began walking to the car.
"Was that it?"
"I guess, I don't know, he was right, I let a woman die today. I should've never let him take her but sometimes I just get so tired, you know."
"Tired?" Fitz asked.
"Of proving myself… that I'm good enough or that I'm smart enough or competent enough. I literally drained her lung and reflated it on the sidewalk. I drilled a hole in her head, found the bleed on the first try, some practiced neurosurgeons would have had to drill four holes before finding it and I did it on the first try and made her regain consciousness on the sidewalk. He saw that and still, I was just a little girl and he needed to break protocol to teach me a lesson about respect or whatever."
"So you let him move her," Fitz said.
"I let him move her and she died which makes me a shitty doctor, criminal even."
They stopped at a car but it wasn't Olivia's car. It was a different one though it was still a Mercedes.
"Where's my car?"
"I left it at the hotel, this is my car, I had it shipped here."
"Oh- well, it's nice, I like it."
It was a black Mercedes GLE coupe.
Fitz opened the door for Olivia then walked to the other side and got in. He pulled the bag of food from the backseat.
"What did you get me?"
"A burger and fries and bunch of other stuff"
"That sounds delicious right now?" She pulled the food from the bag and sniffed the paper box. "Oh my god." She opened the box and took a crinkled fry from the head of fries. "Holy shit," she said as she tasted it. "Thanks for bringing me this."
Fitz nodded, glad their conversation had taken a different turn from the events of the morning.
"Are there people watching us?"
"Andrej and Simon are hanging out in the parking lot...for you. Anyways, my guy found some places. The quicker we looked at them, the quicker we could get out of the hotel."
"Really? That's great. Hopefully, it won't be too far from the hospital…"
"I told him 15 minutes, the most."
"What else did you tell him?"
"At least four bedrooms, high ceilings, a lot of light, good buildings and it has to have a terrace."
"Why four bedrooms?"
"Why not? More space."
Olivia shrugged.
"One of the rooms could be for the baby."
"My child will not be born in an apartment, we'll find something better, this will only be temporary."
"Something better like what- a house?"
"Yeah, I mean, we need to have that conversation but I'm assuming you'll be in Boston for years, at least, so I prefer to build one, I want my kid to have outdoor space, something private, secluded."
Olivia nodded but she wasn't sure what to say. They were moving at lightspeed and a part of her was satisfied but another part terrified it would come crashing down.
"What?"
"Nothing...sometimes I just can't believe I'm pregnant. I can't believe we're planning for a baby."
Fitz sighed and leaned back in his seat, allowing a small smile to form on his lips. "I can't believe it either but we have to do what we have to do, right?"
"I don't want you to feel obligated to do anything though-"
"I am obligated though."
"No- you're aren't."
Fitz got annoyed, "listen, you're pregnant with my child, I am obligated to take care of you and it. The only thing I'm telling you that's different from what I'd be telling a random woman I'd gotten pregnant is that I plan on being with you. I'd still get her an apartment but I wouldn't be there and I'd still get her a house for her and the kid but I wouldn't live there. Please get over yourself, okay."
Olivia nodded begrudgingly then smiled, "fine...so tomorrow then. I can't wait to see the places."
"Tomorrow works. I'll let him know."
She nodded and ate another fry then smiled again, "I missed you today."
"Did you?" he said with a smirk. "I'm gonna miss you tonight."
"Of course you will," she teased. "You sex addict."
"You're already pregnant, why not go crazy."
Olivia chuckled then her pager went off.
"Dammit-" she said then she leaned over and kissed Fitz quickly as she pulled her pager from her waistband and read the message, "I'm sorry, I have to go, one of my patients is seizing."
She flung open the door and sprinted back towards the hospital.
Fitz sat in the waiting room of the hospital with Olivia's food. She'd sprinted away so fast that she left it and he texted her that he'd be waiting with it until she answered her page. It had been almost 45 minutes when he saw her walking down the hall.
"Aww, it was so sweet of you to wait. Thank you because I really am still hungry," she said as she approached.
Fitz stood and handed her the bag.
"You're smiling, I'm guessing it went fine."
She nodded, "yeah, he was seizing from a tumor but we got it under control. We moved up his surgery to 9 tonight."
He leaned over and caressed her cheek then kissed her, "I'll pick you up tomorrow. I'm bored as fuck when you're at work."
"Well, how long will you be here until you have to go and do something illegal...probably."
He cackled loudly at her jab and kissed her again. "You're cute."
"Yeah well don't put your noodle in someone else while I'm here."
"I'd never put a noodle in someone else, I'd put a hard dick in there but still...point taken."
Olivia smiled, "Hopefully, I can steal a couple of hours of sleep before this surgery."
"Can you function if you don't"
"Of course, I'm used to it but I'd prefer not to be dreaming of sleep during an 8-hour surgery."
"Okay, let me let you go, see you in the morning."
Olivia nodded and took the bag of food.
"Thank you."
"Don't worry about it just try to get some sleep because I'm gonna tear you up when I see you tomorrow morning."
She blushed heavily, "looking forward to it."
Fitz headed towards the exit and when Olivia turned and headed to her on-call room. She took a few bites of her cold burger and fell asleep minutes later with food in her mouth.
She was paged half an hour later.
In the morning, she stood in her on-call room at 5:30am, calling Fitz's phone.
"Hey princess, I'm gonna get up in two minutes," he answered sleepily.
"No, um, I'm stuck at work, my boss just told me I have to stay until 6."
The sleep left Fitz immediately, "pm?"
"Yeah, he's giving me a hard time because of my screw-up yesterday and the tumor patient has post-op complications so he's making me stay to monitor him while the attending leaves."
"Well shit," he said with a sigh then he chuckled, "it's fine, just tough it out and hopefully you aren't too tired when I see you at 6. I wanted to take you to dinner."
Olivia smiled, "I can't wait to see you later."
She hung up and took a breath then returned to work. She never imagined not wanting to be at work because she missed her boyfriend- if that was what he was, she wasn't sure. When she was married to Herman, work was her paradise to get away from him, now the opposite was happening.
She counted the minutes until she was able to leave, which instead of 6pm ended up being just after 4pm. Her chief of surgery told her that since her patient had stabilized she could leave.
The moment she stepped out of the hospital, Abby was walking to her from the parking lot, and further back she saw Fitz driving towards her as well.
"I just got called in for my patient," Abby said, "I hate the holidays, it's always so crazy."
She'd left the hospital and had to return.
"Yeah, it is."
Fitz parked in front of them on the curb.
"Ouuu-" Abby said with a raised eyebrow. She leaned her head slightly to look through the window of the car. "Oh my god, he's so hot. I have to talk to him, he's mine. Dibs, dibs, dibs!"
She walked to Fitz's car window before Olivia could respond and tapped on the glass.
Fitz opened the door and stepped out.
Abby stepped back, smiling as she thought of words to say but then what came next made the smile fall from her lips.
"Are you ready, princess?"
The words sounded fine but they were directed at Olivia.
"Uh...yeah, um...by the way Fitz this is Abby, my friend, she's a doctor here too."
Abby was stunned and quiet.
Fitz outstretched his hand to Abby and she robotically reached out and shook it. "It's nice to meet one of Olivia's friends."
Abby nodded then opened her mouth but nothing came out. Fitz shrugged and turned to Olivia, "we can still look at those condos if you're up for it?"
Olivia nodded, "really, that would be great. I got about three hours of sleep so I'm functional."
He chuckled, "good."
"Bye Abby," Olivia said as she walked to the other side of Fitz's car. He opened the door and she climbed in then he walked around and got into the driver's seat then leaned over and pulled Olivia to him and kissed her lips.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm perfect-"
He smiled then pulled away, leaving Abby on the curb. He exited the parking lot of the hospital and then let out a breath, "I wanna fuck you so bad."
Olivia looked down at his crotch and saw his hard cock pressed against his thigh under his jeans.
She smiled, "you missed me so much," she teased.
"What if I did," he ribbed.
Olivia reached over and grabbed his crotch and squeezed his hard penis gently.
"Mmmm," Fitz groaned, "don't start."
"Why not?" she said with a smirk and she slowly massaged him.
"Because you can't finish, 68." Fitz said as he moved her hand from his crotch.
She laughed until tears came to her eyes. She wiped them and took breaths to calm down. "I've been so horny all day, I was shaking earlier."
Fitz smiled at her, "stop looking at me or my erection won't go down."
"Fine, I won't look," she said, laughing as she turned her face away from him then she turned it back.
"Um...Camilla is here."
"What?" Olivia said, completely caught off guard.
Fitz nodded.
"Why?" Olivia asked.
"She's my assistant and I need assisting and I know you might not want her around so I'll keep her away from you, I just wanted you to know."
"Half of me thought you fired her after she blabbed to me but then you mentioned her the other day."
"Oh… I did fire her but then she begged to come back and I didn't really wanna train anyone else so I let her come back. I warned her about you but if I'm being honest it's just best to stay away."
"Yeah because you know she wants you."
"It doesn't matter."
"Yeah maybe but if I had someone close to me who I used to sleep with and who is clearly in love with me then I think you'd feel differently."
Fitz shrugged, "okay, if you want me to fire her then just say the word and I will."
"Does she know I'm pregnant?"
"No."
Olivia rolled her eyes, "I'm not gonna tell you to fire her, I want you to want to do it."
"You can't want me to want to do something Olivia, I don't want to fire her. She does her job well, what do you want me to say."
"Then don't fire her."
Fitz sighed, "here we go." he looked down and was thankful his erection had gone.
"No, I'm serious, don't fire her. She doesn't threaten me and if she's good at her job then keep her."
"So you're not mad?"
"Nope, why would I be mad, I've just been horny all day and tired and hungry and looking forward to seeing you only for you to tell me that Camilla is here."
"You knew she was still around though.'
"Yeah, if she was in Spain, I wouldn't care but she'll be here."
"I'll get someone else, it won't be easy but give me a few months."
"Don't fire her."
"Okay, fine, but I don't want to hear you complaining about her."
"You can't stop me from complaining if she annoys me."
Fitz shrugged then smiled, "that's fair." he stopped at the red light and leaned over for a kiss, Olivia obliged then smiled after, unable to stay annoyed.
When he parked in the lot of the garage at the seaport, there was a man dressed in a navy suit. Olivia hopped out and met Fitz on the opposite side. The man walked to them.
"Mr. Grant," he greeted, "I flew all the way to Boston for you and I'm telling you, I got you some good picks."
"Thanks," Fitz said with a smile, "this is Olivia, she's the one who needs to be impressed."
He stretched his hand to Olivia, "good to meet you, Olivia."
Olivia returned the shake with a smile, "nice to meet you too."
"So, we'll meet Natalie, she's a broker from management and she's gonna give us a walk-through," James said.
They headed to the elevator from the underground parking lot and came out inside the lobby. It was beautiful. The walls were made of clear glass and there was a view of the Boston harbor in front of them.
"This is beautiful," Olivia said with a smile.
There was posh decor. A doorman stood at the entrance and there was a front desk with two receptionists and a beautiful light fixture attached to the ceiling.
"James," a woman said from across the lobby, "great to see you again. This is Mr. Grant right?"
"Yes and Olivia," James added.
"Just Fitz," Fitz said.
They all greeted one another and headed to the elevator.
"So this building is newly built. It's just under two years old. The unit you will view today is our penthouse unit. It features 180-degree glass windows, a large terrace with a view of the harbor, a jacuzzi and a small garden with adequate outdoor seating for hosting, of course now the flowers aren't in bloom because of the winter but come spring it should be a punch of color to the deck," Natalie said.
"How big?" Fitz asked.
"It clocks in around 6,500 square feet. I know you prefer a bigger space so I wouldn't waste your time with anything inadequate," James said.
Fitz nodded.
"James already told me about the salary but what is your profession, if you don't mind?" Natalie said.
"Businessman," Fitz said with a smirk.
Olivia rolled her eyes and smiled.
"And you, Olivia?"
"I'm a neurosurgery resident at Mass gen."
"Ahh, that's perfect, you two are exactly the type of couple we're looking to have in this building," Natalie said with a smile.
They stepped out on the top floor and walked down the hall towards the apartment at the end of the passage.
They stepped inside and Olivia was breathless. It was absolutely beautiful. It had high ceilings, clear glass walls that gave a view of the sea. There was a floating staircase leading up to the second floor. The space was huge. The kitchen was breathtaking and so were the luxurious bathrooms. The bedrooms were large with beautiful chandeliers and the closet in the master was almost the size of her bedroom at her old apartment.
"Do you like it?" Fitz asked when they headed back down to the first floor to view the deck.
"I'm in love. I don't even want to see anything else but this is gonna be a lot of money."
"Don't worry about that," Fitz said with a chuckle.
"That's easy for you to say."
They walked out of the deck and Olivia was stunned by the terrace.
"Wow," she said with a bright smile.
Fitz wrapped his hands around her shoulder from behind and kissed her cheek then he turned to Natalie, "how much was this again?"
"This unit is $24,500 per month," Natalie said. "Plus electricity and utilities. "
"How soon can we move in?"
"Tomorrow, if you'd like," Natalie joked. "But realistically, it may take at least a week to gather all the paperwork and get everything sorted but theoretically it's ready to move in."
"Fitz, this is too expensive," Olivia whispered.
"We'll take it. James will give you everything you need and if you can get us on the lease by tomorrow, I'll triple your fee."
"Brilliant. We'll get started now," she said excitedly.
Olivia wanted to protest but couldn't. The apartment was everything she dreamed of and she couldn't wait to decorate it. Excitement was oozing from her pores. Her mind filled with ideas of a housewarming party to invite her fellow residents to show off her new and impressive living arrangements.
"Olivia?" Fitz called. Her eyes were distant and he knew she'd zoned out.
"Huh?"
"Are you ready to go?"
"Two more minutes, I'm in love with this condo."
He chuckled, "fine," then he turned to Natalie and James, "give us a minute."
They nodded and left.
Olivia reached up and kissed him hungrily.
"$24,500 Fitz. That's almost 300,000 a year? Are you sure?"
"Please stop that," he said with a chuckle.
"I'm sorry, it's a habit."
"We're gonna need to hire a maid for this, until then Camilla can probably get a cleaning company or something."
"A maid? Seriously?"
"Are you gonna clean 6500 square feet? Are you gonna press my clothes and clean my shoes, Olivia?"
She opened her mouth but could say anything.
"I don't expect you and I don't want you to so we're getting a couple of maids and a chef."
She nodded and took a breath.
"Come on, I wanna take you out later but I wanna have sex with you first and I'm guessing somewhere in there you might need to take a nap?"
"You know me so well," she said with a smile as she reached up and kissed him again. "Sex first though, definitely first, I'll sleep really well after. As soon as we get in I want you to rip off pants and put it in me."
Fitz smiled, "shit, it's coming back."
"Let's go then," Olivia said, giggling with her arms wrapped around him and headed towards the door.
