A/N: This is just a very short (and not so great) piece that wouldn't leave me alone. Character Death.

She was free. Finally, truly and completely free.

While the other's had stood around his ICU bed, sobbing their grief, mourning the passing of their friend and leader, she'd stared down at his body, dry-eyed, and felt...relief. Did that make her a bad person?

She'd loved him, still did and always would, more than life itself, but now it was over. No more pain and suffering, for either of them. No more dancing around "This", swinging from gently flirtatious to open hostility.

It was like letting go of a terminally ill family member. Sure, everyone loves Granny, but when she finally lets go isn't it better? No more pills and pain for her, no more frantic 3am Alzheimer hikes for you. Yes, there are tears...but are they really all from sadness?

Neither at the hospital or the funeral had anyone touched her or tried to comfort her. They probably thought she was too deep in shock to respond yet. They'd probably be appalled if they knew the truth.

She'd been a bit melancholy when presenting her resignation. The team had hugged her then, and looked at her with understanding in their eyes. Let them believe that her inability to cope with his death was the reason for her departure, it was better for her and for them that they didn't know how liberated she'd felt when she'd heard the shrill, flat-line alarm.
