A faint whisper of his name aroused Link almost instantly from his light sleep, and he sat up searching the camp for the source. It wasn't surprising his friends were still slumbering, the soft snores resounding around the burned out fire. Reaching for his sword lying beside him, Link stood up and stepped over the sleeping bag Kagome and the children shared cuddled up beside the other.
"Link…this way…"'
As he made his way through the darkness of the night away from the camp, Link cautiously searched around him, his hand never once leaving the hilt of his sword. Link wasn't foolish; he knew exactly whose voice called out to him, and he had a feeling he knew why.
For what seemed like several minutes, Link felt the hairs on his arms stand on end as a cool breeze swept by; it was accompanied by a dense mist that wavered just at his ankles. Pushing through the shrubbery, Link saw a silhouette a short distance away with his back to him, standing before a large pond where a few fireflies danced.
"Happy Mask Salesman…" Link called out, his voice laced with suspicion.
Already knowing the young boy was behind him; the Happy Mask Salesman chuckled lightheartedly and turned with his ever present smile. "So you've come. I knew you would." Yet as the boy silently glared at him, his hand never once leaving his sword strapped to his waist, the peddler's expression faltered. "It's only natural you would come to suspect me. There's much on your mind."
"First, your real name, is it Emmett?" Link asked, and the Happy Masked Salesman replied with yes. "Before anything else, I need you to tell me everything."
"Everything? Hmm…" The peddler pondered as the youth clenched the hilt of his blade tightly. It seemed he indeed waited for all the answers which had been left under lock and key. "From where should I begin?"
"Everything," Was Link's reply. "Start from the beginning."
Sighing, he turned away from Link and looked out across the pond. "Ikana is my birthplace. Of course you already knew that. The King was a tyrant and I was among a tribe of sorcerers that rebelled in secrecy. We had hoped to eliminate the Royal Family. We were close to succeeding but my foolishness brought disaster."
"Majora's Mask," Link answered. "Your desire for power led to the destruction of the Ikanaians and all of Termina."
The Happy Mask Salesman only laughed at this before turning manically towards Link, who hesitantly prepared himself for anything. "Yes, it was my fault. My greed brought on the malevolent wrath of that cursed mask and innocents were slaughtered because of that. I encouraged the war upon my homeland out of greed. My sanity was lost since."
"And now?" Link questioned narrowing his gaze. "Explain your immortality."
Emmett thought back to the time a thousand years ago after the calamity had fallen upon the land of Ikana. He remembered escaping the burning Palace, his eyes witnessing hundreds if not thousands of his people dead upon the ground and numerous Garo wildly pillaging through the city. Although his plan to eliminate the King was a success, he didn't mean for things to turn out like this.
The mask was in his hand, the thirst for power silent as he took in the golden lights above his homeland. The ground shook violently and the lights nearly blinded him. For the first time in his life, all that he had learned from the books in the Royal Library was real. Emmett had finally witnessed the arrival of the three deities from the Heavens. The three Goddesses: Din, Farore, and Nayru.
For what seemed like several hours, a battle had played out across the sky, from that of the Goddesses and that of another powerful deity whose hair was as white as snow yet his hatred filled with malice. Yet even such deity could not stand up to three powerful Goddesses.
Pulling away from his thoughts, Emmett returned his attention back to Link, who was patiently awaiting an answer to his question. Immortality was it? "The Goddesses arrived with vengeance. The universe was plunged into a never-ending nightmare to which we reside now. I had attempted to escape, but my intentions were thwarted and they not only cursed Termina but me as well."
Link continued listening. "Go on."
"Because of my wicked affinity for the cursed mask, I was sentenced to wander this cursed world for all eternity," The Happy Mask Salesman explained, and at this Link found this believable. "As the years went by, I grew accustomed to finding rare masks from all over this wretched world and that of many others…"
"Though you were cursed to wander Termina for eternity, you were still capable of venturing outside of this land to others," Link concluded and from the peddler's nod, he went on. "I assume since the Goddesses left that fateful day, you found a way to leave here and arrive in Hyrule for a purpose I do not understand. Were you attempting to escape from fate?"
The peddler laughed as he sauntered around the clearing. "My reasons were personal. I was always fascinated by that of other worlds, especially the land blessed by the Goddesses, Hyrule. Out of curiosity and seeking to learn all there was to learn within that Kingdom, I slipped through the dimensions quite easily," He explained. "How did they differ from that of my own people? What sort of inventions had they crafted over the years? What stories did they tell in their libraries?" He finally turned towards Link. "I wanted to know all there was to know about your land."
The Happy Mask Salesman sauntered around the clearing once more, his gaze traveling from his hands and to that of the sleeves on his robes. "I found text within the library in Hyrule, mentioning different realms, one such as the Sacred Realm and many others."
"Was that really the reason why you traveled to Hyrule?" Link asked, and at this, the peddler suddenly stilled, his form more ridged from before. "Emmett?"
He suddenly laughed, his eyes opening wide enough to reveal the redness in them. He was certainly crazed, that much Link had learned from the short moments he'd spent with him before; however it was more apparent now. "No. There was another reason."
But Link already knew the answer. "Majora's Mask. You couldn't acquire it from Termina any longer so you sought answers from Hyrule."
"Indeed. You are astute."
It was starting to make sense now. The mystery behind Emmett was slowly unraveling. If he turned out to be an enemy of his, Link wasn't sure if he could manage against him easily. This man's way of thinking was quite different than those he had faced on his previous adventures. "Whose side are you on?"
Emmett chuckled at this. "I am a changed man, I assure you. It might have taken years to realize, but I no longer wish any harm upon anyone. What would I gain otherwise?"
"Armaros spoke of you," Link then explained and at this the Happy Mask Salesman nodded his head in understanding. "What is your relationship with him? He lived in the same time period as you. He claims as of now much resentment towards you and that he has nothing to do with the curse of this land."
"We were rivals from a young age and had joined the tribe to perfect our magic and thus accomplish a goal of eradicating the Tyrant King. We feared what might become of our home while under his rule. As I'm sure you're well aware of, our Kingdom of Ikana was in chaos since he took the throne. While we might have had a powerful army, our people were suffering."
For a moment, it seemed Emmett had lost himself in memories of his past and he looked off distantly across the lake. It felt as if this had just happened yesterday and the memories were still fresh in his mind. "I grew careless in our plans and had fallen under the wickedness of Majora. Armaros had seen this and had fought me in the streets to pull me away from the mask. In the end, he managed to steal it and brought it into the safety of the Royal Family for a short time, but it led to false accusations against him. I realized too late that he was only trying to help me." The peddler sighed once more and lowered his head apologetically. "In the end, he was buried alive within the cells of his prison."
Link's eyes widened in realization. After Armaros had pled innocent to all the accusations in the courtroom before his Majesty, he had been sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. It was confirmed he'd been in possession of the mask but had warned the Royal Family to destroy it and that the fault lied with a man named Emmett. 'I almost forgot … It's no wonder Armaros would want revenge. It's not us or Termina that he's vengeful at, it's Emmett.'
"So you see the fault is mine. Armaros isn't after you and your friends. He is after me," Emmett explained as if reading Link's thoughts aloud. "But it seems you've gotten entangled within this mess I've created, and I am deeply sorry."
"A battle with Armaros seems inevitable," Link replied. After all, he was in possession of the Sacred Jewel. Since it seemed the Happy Mask Salesman was not an enemy towards him or his friends, he allowed himself to relax and removed his hand from the hilt of his sword. He'd gotten a majority of his questions asked, but that left him with one more weighing on his mind. "Last question—"
"You wish to summon the Goddesses," Emmett interrupted, his smile returned as he leaned forward with his hands clasped in front of him. "So you've acquired the final pendant. You wonder what you must do now in order to summon them and grant your wish, correct?" When Link nodded, Emmett only laughed out loud. "Yes, you and your friends have certainly come a long way, and you've achieved much although you've lost just as much."
The air between him and the Happy Mask Salesman suddenly changed, and Link suddenly noticed the awkward silence emanating from Emmett. He was no longer smiling at him, in fact, he was frowning and his eyes were closed as he released a sigh.
"There is something I must tell you above all else," Emmett suddenly replied, his voice stern and somewhat grave. He approached the boy slowly, his hands at his sides until he was two feet from Link. "I'm sorry I have to say this, and at such terrible timing … But perhaps it would be better if you did not continue on the path with your friends."
Link narrowed his eyes. What was he saying? Abandon his friends after all that they endured? He couldn't do that; in the past he was tempted to only because he feared for their safety and he lacked confidence. "That's impossible."
"It's not impossible."
There was something he wasn't telling him. And he could see it in his face, that something was wrong. He bothered Link, and he couldn't help but nervously swallow. What was he going to say? Did he overhear the conversation between them earlier that night, asking if he'd want to return with them to their own world after their journey here was finished? If so, then why?
"Explain yourself. I don't plan to abandon them, not after all we've been through," Link clarified, but it only caused Emmett to shake his head in disapproval.
He inhaled a deep breath and released it just the same. It took Emmett a moment to gather his thoughts before looking Link straight in the eye. "Link, this world isn't what it seems. The people you have met and befriended, they are just like you. In a sense, we're all the same, living in this cursed world forgotten by the Goddesses."
"What are you saying?"
A scene flashed across Link's thoughts suddenly and he grasped his head painfully. He saw a brief scene of him holding tightly onto Skull Kid's leg while Epona galloped at high speed through the Lost Woods. He remembered that moment, but why was he remembering that?
"W-what is this? Why are you … showing me this?" He asked through clenched teeth. The pain was nearly intolerable. Why did it hurt so much?
Yet the Happy Mask Salesman only stared at him pitifully. "Don't you remember, Link?"
'Remember?'
A distant memory of Princess Zelda appeared at the forefront of his memory. She was smiling at him as she handed him her most precious instrument. "I believe in my heart that a day will come when we shall meet again…"
A painful gasp escaped Link suddenly and he saw many images of the Skull Kid kicking him while his younger self had attempted to pull him off his horse. His attempts were futile and then Epona had rounded a dangerous turn through the thicket of trees.
Link's eyes widened in realization.
A sickening crack echoed in his ears and he heard the cackling of the Skull Kid flee from the scene. His ten year old self had been thrown from the horse and into the nearest tree where his head made first impact.
It was at that instant that Link lost all feeling within his legs and he fell to his knees, his hands still grasping his head tightly where the wound should have been. An image of his limp body surfaced and he saw the blood seeping from a deep wound.
All the while he heard the Happy Mask Salesman's voice from long ago echo in his ears. "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
"N-no… "
Emmett pitied the boy. How terrible it must have felt to suddenly remember such a tragic event. Like many, it was only natural to forget the reason for his arrival to Termina. "I'm sorry you had to find out this way."
Tears flooded his eyes and he fought to control his emotions. How could it be possible? How when everything in this world felt so real?
Having seen enough, Inuyasha drew his sword and charged at the peddler standing too closely to Link whom he could only assume had been hurt painfully from his position on the ground. "You bastard!" He knew that merchant couldn't be trusted!
But before he could swing his sword at Emmett, Link had reached out and grasped his sleeve. "Wait … Inuyasha. Don't hurt him."
Looking behind him, Inuyasha threw a glare at the merchant, standing there stoic as he bent down to inspect what he assumed was an injury to Link's head. But he saw nothing there. "Are you alright? What the hell did you do to him?!" He growled, glaring back at Emmett.
Closing his eyes, Link fought back his emotions. "I just remembered something I had forgotten."
Looking back at Link, Inuyasha inspected him once more, but he wasn't prepared for what Link said next.
"I remembered. I died long ago, Inuyasha…"
OOO
After having seen Link leave without any warning from camp, Inuyasha had followed him out into the woods and it was with much surprise that he saw his friend conversing with Emmett, the suspicious merchant they had been searching for since their return from the past. As he was concealed by the darkness of the woods, Inuyasha leaned himself against the bark of a tree and listened in; he had intended on revealing himself sooner, but his curiosity and interest arose when much of their questions were finally revealed.
Of course he already knew the curse of this world was the result of the Happy Mask Salesman's mistakes from the past; his wickedness for power destroyed all that he cherished, and the world suffered after. Inuyasha didn't blame Armaros for wanting vengeance against Emmett; if he had lost his life in such a way, then Inuyasha would want the same. However, as much as Emmett was to blame for this, Armaros was just as guilty; after all, Armaros was taking his vengeance out on others who stood in his way and he even went so far as to steal the Shikon Jewel from them, not to mention he put his friends in danger.
"Explain yourself!" Link suddenly voiced. "I don't plan to abandon them, not after all we've been put through!"
From the tone of Link's voice, Inuyasha was pulled away from his musings and he found himself befuddled for a moment. 'I don't plan to abandon them?' Was the Happy Mask Salesman trying to put a wedge between Link and his friends? If so, then why? What the hell was with this guy? Inuyasha found himself growling agitatedly at this.
But Emmett only remained stoic throughout the conversation with the boy. If only Link would learn to reason then things would work out in the end for him as well as for his friends. Emmett had seen the devotion through Link and his friends' journey and he had seen the blossoming of a friendship grow stronger over time, but it was time to blow out the flame of friendship that never should have been. "Link, this world isn't what it seems. The people you have met, they are just like you, in a sense, living in this forgotten world."
There was a pained cry that followed seconds after, and Inuyasha watched almost helplessly as he saw Link fall to his knees, clutching his head achingly. This alone was enough to urge Inuyasha to unsheathe his sword and lunge forward. "You bastard!"
Though as the peddler showed no indication of fear as Inuyasha brandished his sword and sped towards him with inhuman speed, the attack was never dealt. Link had reached out and grasped the half demon's sleeve and it was enough to cease Inuyasha's movement.
"Wait … Inuyasha. Don't hurt him."
Inuyasha was stumped. Why stop him now when he was so close? The merchant was close enough to plunge his blade through and he would have done so if Link hadn't of stopped him. "He fucking attacked you!" Inuyasha cursed, baring his fangs at Emmett who stood there passively watching them. "Why shouldn't I kill him? After all that he has put this world through, I think he deserves to know what real hell is like!"
A haunting smile stretched across Emmett's face suddenly. It was quite ironic, the words Inuyasha spoke.
"You think this is funny?!"
Fighting back the pain that was suddenly subsiding, Link closed his eyes, his hands still resting on either side of his head. Fortunately he was able to regain his footing and he unsteadily stood up. "I just remembered something I had forgotten."
Baffled, Inuyasha looked over his shoulder. Looking closely, he saw that there were no physical injuries upon Link, except for the previous scars from their recent battles. "What did you remember?" What was going on here?
Though it was probably too much for his friend to understand, Link felt he at least deserved to know, after all, he felt closest to Inuyasha who treated him like a younger brother. "I remembered. I died long ago, Inuyasha…"
Inuyasha narrowed his golden eyes. "What are you talking about?" He questioned, but Link's gaze shifted to the ground solemnly. "How can you be dead when you're standing alive in front of me?
"Surely your canine nose must have noticed long ago, Inuyasha," Emmett's voice caught Inuyasha by surprise, and he turned on Emmett growling once more. "You remember, I'm sure, your first encounter with Link?"
"What?"
Flashback
Growing annoyed, Inuyasha stepped forward and stood beside the priestess, his glare focused entirely on the blonde haired boy in front of him. "Are ya gonna say something or what?" When Link gave no indication of listening to him, he continued. "I just saved you, the least you can do is say thanks!" 'There's something off about this kid.' Sniffing a bit, he found the boy's scent quite disturbing.
Such impudence irritated Link. Sure the man was correct, but Link refused to express his thanks to one as rude as him. The strange man, known as Inuyasha, towered over his form threateningly, his eye twitching ever so slightly, yet Link was not the least bit perturbed by his presence.
Kagome pushed the half breed aside, her face showing annoyance. "Give him a rest! He won't say anything if you keep yelling at him!"
OOO
"Are you certain this is the right way, Inuyasha?" Miroku asked from behind. A familiar small tree with one broken limb caught his eye. Leaves lay crumpled and withered around its base. "I'm sure I recognize that tree," he pointed out. In fact, there were a great many things which seemed familiar to the monk; this was the same for everyone else.
Fed up with the constant questions, Inuyasha threw his arms up and turned to face the others. "Hell if I know! This place is like a maze, and besides, it's hard to pinpoint everyone's scent."
Hearing this, Kagome asked, "What do you mean? Is something wrong with your nose?" This was a first for her to learn. Since when did his nose stop working?
The half demon searched his surroundings warily. "This forest is strange, as was that kid and that bug a while back. It's the same scent from him, though not as corrupted. There's no scent of any one who may have traveled this way, nor ours. I can't even smell those crows in that tree there," he pointed. "All I smell is a forest, but it's different than any forest I've seen."
"No scent? Wait, so you're saying that the kid we happened upon held no scent?" questioned Miroku. For a moment, he wasn't sure what his friend was implying.
Annoyed by the monk, Inuyasha glared. "Like I was trying to tell you all before, but no one would listen, that boy smells like the forest. He didn't have his own natural scent. All I could detect from him was that and blood."
"That's because he was drenched in it, Inuyasha," Kagome argued. "I do wonder what may have happened to him. I hope he's okay. He seemed so untrusting of us and his eyes…"
"They seemed empty," Sango replied. "I wonder why?"
"That kid, it's like he's killed his entire life. That scent is practically stained on him," he explained, catching surprised glances from the group. The fact that the child might have killed his entire life bothered Inuyasha, yet he didn't seem like a threat to them. Whatever the case, he would keep his eyes open. Something was not right with this place or the people for that matter.
End Flashback
Revelation hit Inuyasha suddenly at the surfaced memories. That's right! Since the beginning, he had suspected Link's scent as unordinary. Blood. And it wasn't just Link's scent, it was this entire land.
"So I see you have realized by now, that this world is different," Came Emmett's sudden reply. Now perhaps, things would move forward in a new light. Emmett had hoped Link would come to learn of his fate sooner, but he never expected it would take him so long. "Yes. Now you understand. This world is not of the living. The people you have encountered are but lost souls trapped in their grief and misery with no recollection of their deaths. Link is no different, but now perhaps that has changed…"
"Wait a minute." Inuyasha found himself scratching his head confusedly. "If this world has become some sort of Purgatory or afterlife, does that mean all of us are dead?" Inuyasha didn't remember dying in battle, and it wouldn't make sense that the Jewel Shard was still in existence. It couldn't be … It wouldn't make any sense. How the hell could a land that was once filled with life descend into this hellish state? Of course he understood the curse, but did the Goddesses truly eradicate all existing life and create some hellish world full of grief, where all souls gathered to find some sort of acceptance?
Surprised by his question, Emmett merely chuckled. "Oh ho ho ho! No you and your friends are very much alive. I can feel it. You and your friends are here for a reason, Inuyasha, and I'm sure that by now you know what that reason is."
That was definitely a relief. Looking back at Link, he felt remorse for the boy. In a sense, he was just like Kikyo, only he was stuck within a cursed world. Inuyasha was deeply bothered by this. Over the weeks they had spent in Termina, attempting to locate all the pendants and restore peace to the land, Inuyasha had grown to accept Link as part of the group. Sure they didn't get along in the beginning, but it was different now. 'I don't believe this…' His friend Link was dead. Memories from last night hit Inuyasha suddenly.
Flashback
"Link, I need to ask you something before our task is complete in this world," Sango replied and when Link nodded in confusion, she went on. "I know this is somewhat unexpected, though I'm sure you've discussed it with Kagome and Inuyasha, but are you interested in coming with us back to the Feudal Era?"
For a minute, Link was silent. He hadn't expected Sango to ask him that, and it certainly surprised the others, especially Kagome and Inuyasha who were awkwardly blushing. Return with them back to the Feudal Era? Was it possible?
"S-sango!" Kagome embarrassedly blushed. What was the slayer doing?
"Honestly … I've given the thought some consideration," Link replied and at this, Kagome held her breath and her friends looked on curiously for Link's answer. As his gaze fell upon his calloused hands and dirtied boots, he wondered if the Goddesses would allow it. This time it wasn't just Kagome and Inuyasha bringing up the idea, but now it was everyone else. Did they truly wish for him to return with them?
Even Shippo was delighted to hear Sango ask such a question. Ignoring the cards at his feet, he leaped onto Link's lap and looked up at him hopefully. "It'd be great if you came back with us. This place is kind of depressing anyways."
Link smiled at the child. Well he wouldn't deny that Termina was depressing. It was a morbid land with haunting memories of his past. It would be nice to get away from it and start over. Rather than start a new life once more here in Termina where he knew he would remain burdened with his thoughts, he could instead travel with friends. Though it was a little disheartening to admit, if they hadn't of crossed his path during their first meeting, he was sure he would have … ended his life. Now it wasn't like that anymore; in fact, he felt there was some meaning for him to exist now.
Miroku only grinned at the boy sitting across from him and Inuyasha. "I think it would be a great idea, don't you Inuyasha?"
"I don't see why not," The half demon replied. "Hell I don't even want to stay in this world any longer than I need to." Inuyasha smiled at Link. "What do you say, Link? You want to head back with us after we defeat Armaros?"
How could he refuse? "If the Goddesses allow it, then I wouldn't mind seeing your world."
"That's the spirit!" Miroku replied.
Unable to hold herself back, Kagome unexpectedly threw her arms around Link's shoulders, much to Link's surprise. From the sudden movement, Shippo fell from Link's lap and looked on in amusement just as the rest of his friends. "That's great!" She exclaimed, nuzzling her cheek against his shoulder.
"You guys should kiss already," Shippo suddenly replied and it wasn't surprising the two love birds blushed.
Pulling away from Link, Kagome brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear, but her smile still remained. Words couldn't express how happy she felt. Link actually wanted to return back with them, and that alone was enough to have her melting at the thought. "Sorry about that," She laughed as Link looked down shyly.
"No reason to feel embarrassed," Sango replied teasingly before giggling at their reactions.
"Exactly!" This time Miroku joined in. "Why it's only natural to show affection to those you love." Miroku smiled.
End Flashback
If it was true … If Link really was dead and all of this was some sort of afterlife, then wouldn't it be impossible to bring him with them in the end? After all, they were only allowed one wish as explained by the Great Fairy. What would become of his friends after learning of this? Well he could already see the tears and confusion, especially from Shippo and Kagome. Link had bonded exceptionally well with them. Inuyasha knew Kagome would experience heartache for a second time, and it tore Inuyasha to pieces. This entire situation was too similar to his relationship with Kikyo. "Link…"
The young boy only looked at him with a mask of indifference, one he once wore during their first encounter. There was pain behind his eyes, but he managed to show a brave front before Inuyasha. "I'm okay. Inuyasha, how much did you overhear?"
Inuyasha blinked. "The questions you were asking earlier? I heard all of it."
Good. Right now, Link didn't feel up to a repeat. He was sure Inuyasha would relay all of this information to the group of that concerning Armaros and how to summon the Goddesses of course. Link wasn't sure he was ready to tell anyone about his personal troubles. "There is more I have to ask you, Emmett."
The merchant's ears perked at this. Well he already knew what the boy wished to ask. "Since it seems you have already collected the pendants, there is only one last task you must accomplish. You want to learn how to summon the Goddesses, correct?" At Link's stern nod, he only nodded. "Since you have failed to stop me in the past from reclaiming the mask and thus allowing me to curse this once lively world, I am willing to compensate. After all, you did your best."
Inuyasha glared at Emmett. The hell he better compensate! "Well, are you going to tell us?"
A smile stretched across Emmett's face. "Ikana," He replied. "Go there to the tower. It will be there that you shall see the portal to the Realm of the Goddesses. Simply call out to them, with the pendants intact, of course." It was rather simple, but then again, something could always go wrong.
It seemed pretty easy and it made sense. But what was the catch? "That's it?" Link asked, his brow arching suspiciously. "I've been meaning to ask. What is the importance of using these pendants to summon them? What powers do they truly hold?"
Emmett only smiled. "These pendants, long ago were scattered across the regions. They hold balance within the world, you can say. It was said they are infused with the tears of the Goddesses."
Inuyasha looked at Link. It was surprising he was willing to hold up a strong front. He had expected the boy to break down, but Link refused to shed a tear. Inuyasha half wondered what the entire outcome of their journey would end up like. He was torn between his friendship with Link and that of the cursed fate of this land. There was only one wish … What was the right wish? While his sword remained clenched in his grasp, still pointed towards the Happy Mask Salesman, Inuyasha growled. "So we just gotta go to the tower and call out for them with the pendants and then we can make our wish and return home?"
"But of course. You and your friends must be eager to return to whence you were forced away from," Emmett replied almost sympathetically.
"Well … we're not in that big of a rush," Inuyasha suddenly commented, his thoughts of Link weighing heavily on his mind.
A change overcame the peddler suddenly, and he approached Link, but when he saw Inuyasha move to step in front of him, he only frowned. "I must warn you, Link. Be wary of those around you. It doesn't take much to change the faint of heart. Look out for your friends and do not fall into foolishness later on…" He explained, as if warning Link of future events soon to pass.
"Foolishness?" Link asked.
He nodded. "You must understand now. Now that you have regained those memories … you must put some dist—"
"I will not distance myself from my friends!" Link's growled.
Though he separated the two, Inuyasha felt that stiffness upon his chest more profound than before. In a way, he understood what Emmett was getting at but it wasn't his decision to make. It was Link's.
"Though I am dead, it doesn't change the fact that I must help them to succeed! If we can reverse the curse on this land, then … then they can return to their own world." That's how it was supposed to be anyway. After all, they couldn't simply stay with him when time was of the essence. His friends had a duty in the other world, and Link didn't have a right to hold them back.
"Damn it!" Inuyasha ran his hand through his silver locks agitatedly. Hell he wanted Link to come back with them! There had to be a way to bring him back to life and bring him with them to their world. Right? Why did things have to get so complicated when they finally got this far?
But Emmett wasn't going to back down. "Surely you must realize by now. Your soul was not meant to wander this world forever, nor are you capable of being with the woman you love who is full of life," Emmett sighed. "If you cannot come to terms with your situation, then your soul will forever wander in despair, Link."
"That's my problem. Not yours to concern yourself with, Emmett," Link retorted. "My death has nothing to do with you. Since you have already helped us this far in our journey, we can manage the rest on our own."
The Happy Mask Salesman said no more.
It was then that Link turned his back to the peddler, and without even a word of gratitude for his assistance thus far in their journey, Link walked away.
As Link disappeared through the trees, Inuyasha turned back to Emmett. He wanted to say something but he found himself at a loss for words. Sheathing his sword, Inuyasha cursed to himself and was about to follow after Link back to camp where the others were still asleep, but the peddler called out to him.
"Inuyasha. If he does not come to terms with his death and accept the reality of his situation, then he will not pass on," Emmett warned, but Inuyasha only struck him with a glare over his shoulder.
"Like Link said, that's not for you or anyone else to decide but himself!" Inuyasha replied.
But the magnitude of the situation was more dire than either Inuyasha or Link could imagine. "Link, as you know, is cursed or rather, his soul."
This stopped Inuyasha in his tracks, and he turned around confused. What was the peddler going on about now? Cursed? "What the hell are you saying? You told us he was dead! Now you're saying he is cursed? This entire fucking world is cursed you bastard!"
Emmett frowned. "Link needs to be reborn, for the sake of the future of Hyrule. He possesses the spirit of the Hero needed to defeat a great evil soon to arise."
"Huh? What are you saying? Spirit of the Hero?" Inuyasha asked.
Emmett nodded. "I'm saying this. Long ago, as the legends depicted, a great battle took place before the establishment of Hyrule thousands of years ago. Darkness reined upon the people and a hero was needed to restore peace. One such Hero arose and aided by the Goddess Hylia, he quelled that darkness in shadow, but it was not forever."
"I don't get what you're saying. How does Link being cursed have to do with this?"
"Before that evil was sealed away, it had placed an incantation upon itself to be reborn for all eternity to establish dominion over the world," Emmett explained. "The Hero had died in battle, but the Goddess, fearing for the world's future, placed a blessing upon him, that his soul would forever be rebirthed to save the land from such evil."
Inuyasha frowned. So Link needed to be reborn for the sake of Hyrule? "Just how exactly do you know all of this?" A thought hit him suddenly, and he remembered Emmett telling Link that he had traveled through the dimensions to Hyrule; it must have been there that he learned of this. After absorbing all of this information, Inuyasha then followed after Link and the Happy Mask Salesman said no more but watched him disappear through the tree lines after Link.
Fate. That word echoed in his mind as he followed after Link in the direction he had taken a few moments ago. 'Link is dead and supposedly his soul is the reincarnation of the Hero's spirit.' Inuyasha felt a headache come on. Forget that bullshit! It wasn't a blessing; it sounded more like a curse! To forever be reborn just to risk your life saving a land from some unknown evil wasn't the kind of life anyone deserved! It was ridiculous!
Inuyasha found Link standing by himself, clenching the hilt of his sword tightly. He saw that he was burdened by what happened, and it was expected. 'Damn … now what?'
As he approached Link, Inuyasha reached out and placed a comforting hand upon his shoulder. The boy did not respond to his touch, but merely held his back to Inuyasha, his blue eyes staring off past the trees where the others were camped. "Hey, are you alright?"
"Yeah."
Inuyasha scratched his head awkwardly. "So … is it true? Uh…"
Link nodded. "I remembered everything. Who would have guessed, right?" Link asked, turning around to face the half demon, who was looking at him sympathetically. "The possibility of dying in this world is real, but I never imagined that I would be…" But it was true.
"Well then we'll just have to fix that!" Inuyasha suddenly remarked, and it urged a confused stare from Link. "I mean, if that's true, then … surely those Goddesses will restore your life back! I mean we went through all the trouble to get those pendants and risk our lives, so it's the least they can do, right Link?"
Link only frowned, his gaze shifting down. "Doubtful Inuyasha. We're only allowed one wish. The whole purpose of your arrival to this land was to save it from its inevitable curse. Very soon this world will be destroyed and all those here will follow after it."
Inuyasha wanted to bring up the Happy Mask Salesman and what he had told him about the Hero's spirit, but decided to push that to the back of his mind. Now wasn't the time. Link was distraught and he needed to reassure him somehow. He knew there had to be a way to save him and reverse that curse. Inuyasha wanted Link and Kagome to be together. It couldn't be impossible.
"Listen Link, I know that this is a lot to take in. It's a lot for me to take in as well because you're my friend," Inuyasha began sternly. "But we're going to find a way through this. We'll find a way to get your life back. And I'm not about to have Kagome heartbroken for a second time either."
Link smiled at the half demon. "If there is a way, then I'm all for it, Inuyasha."
Inuyasha smiled. "That's what I like to hear!" Inuyasha knew what it was like to be separated from the one he loved, and he wasn't about to let that happen to Kagome or Link. He wouldn't wish it upon his friends either.
"I don't feel it would be right to keep this a secret, but I'm not ready to reveal this to anyone, especially Kagome," Link explained, and Inuyasha understood this.
"Well it doesn't have to be right now. Take all the time you need. For now though, while we figure out a way to bring you back to life, we should try to act normally around the others."
Link nodded. "Right."
"And if you even think about trying to distance yourself from us or do something crazy, then ill beat the shit out of you!" Inuyasha warned jokingly, and at this, Link laughed.
Little did they know they were being watched from the treetops. A frown marred Dark Link's face. So it appeared the Hero of Time was dead this entire time; that certainly ruined his chances of eliminating him from the face of the planet, didn't it? Pity, but that didn't mean Dark Link's mischief had to come to an end just yet. In fact, this new information brought forth a chuckle which was followed after by a maniacal laugh. The fun was just starting.
OOO
The night went by rather slowly, but as soon as the sun rose above the horizon, the group awoke, well rested and prepared to head out towards Termina. Their breakfast consisted of fruits they found along the way, and they began to notice a familiarity in the curvature of the trees and landscape; it was as if they were already there, but there was much distance left to cover. From where they traveled, they saw Ikana Canyon in the distance, the mountain which was the tallest in all of Termina, and they knew there was still at least a day's walk ahead.
The half demon had been somewhat silent, but not enough to notice otherwise. Inuyasha hadn't said a word about last night's encounter with the merchant. He knew he should at least tell his friends where they were bounded for, but he couldn't help but allow his thoughts to stray to Link, who was lagging behind the group with an expression of indifference.
Hideki, who was following a little behind Shippo, couldn't help but reach out for the fox with his small little stick arms, and when Shippo turned in question, Hideki lowered his head. "Shippo, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for there to be a misunderstanding last night."
"Huh?" Shippo blinked in confusion.
Kagome and Sango, who were walking side by side in front of the two, turned to look back at the children, as did the rest of the gang.
"I … didn't mean to upset you. You see, my mother passed away a long time ago and I don't even remember her face that well. It felt nice to be loved by your mom, Shippo..." Hideki sorrowfully explained. "I promise I won't come in between you two again."
Shippo felt bad suddenly and awkwardly scratched his head, just like his friend Link always did. He supposed he never realized Hideki's situation and only thought of him as a nuisance that hogged his surrogate mother. So Hideki didn't have a mom… "Uh, no it's ok. I'm sorry for acting rude to you before. I just got a little jealous. I don't hate you, Hideki, in fact, I don't really know you that well but you seem like an alright guy."
"Really?" Hideki's head shot up in surprise.
"Yep!" An idea came to Shippo's mind suddenly and he grabbed Hideki's hand almost brotherly. "I don't mind sharing Kagome. You can think of her as your mom too!" He smiled.
Having heard this, Kagome fell into Sango's shoulder awing to herself. That had been the cutest little conversation those two had ever had together. She just wanted to pick them both us and pinch their cheeks.
Unable to resist commenting, Inuyasha, who was well ahead of the group smirked back at Shippo. "See, you really do have a stick for a brother!" He laughed, but Shippo only stuck his tongue out at him.
Sango smiled at the pair walking behind them as they continued on. "It's good to see some smiles after so long."
"I know, right?" Kagome replied. "It seems like things are finally going well for us!" Looking around suddenly, Kagome couldn't help but notice that Link wasn't beside her and Sango or Miroku and Inuyasha. Looking back, she saw that Link was somewhat lagging behind the group, his bangs shielding his eyes. Kagome blinked and leaned into Sango once more. "Hey, what's up with Link? He looks a little down…"
Sango also looked back, and she also noticed. "I don't know. Do you think he and Inuyasha got into a fight or something?"
"Doesn't look like it…" Kagome remarked before easing herself away from Sango. She stood there waiting for Link to catch up, and when he did, she ambled along beside him, looking at him curiously, and he offered her a small smile. "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine. I just have a lot on my mind," Link replied.
"I know what you mean," Kagome sighed before stretching her arms above her head. "We're almost done. All we have to do is figure out a way to summon the Goddesses and then we can all go back home!"
Link nodded. He wanted so badly to just tell her the truth, but he didn't wish for her to cry or grow upset. What could he really do in this situation besides hide the truth from her and the others?
There were so many things going through the priestess's mind that moment. The fact Link had accepted Sango's and everyone else's proposal to return with them back to the Feudal Era was enough to bring her excitement. Kagome began imagining a future beside Link, where they fought demons together, eventually destroying Naraku and settling down peacefully with friends and family. The priestess wondered if it was possible for Link to actually see her own world beyond the well; she had seen Link's fascination when she had brought up many things from her time period, and she wondered what it would be like to show him all around Tokyo.
Noticing her excitement from beside him, Link only smiled at her. Seeing Kagome's smiling face from time to time was enough to distract him from his lonely thoughts.
It wasn't until a few hours later they eventually came to stop. Two paths diverged within the woods stood before them, and they found themselves looking down each road. Between the intersections was a small wooden sign, written in the language of Termina. The lettering was written in black and large enough to read.
Termina Field ahead
WoodFall, Snowhead, Great Bay, Ikana Valley
Attractions:
Romani's Ranch, Clock Town.
They were almost there!
"It seems we should make it to Termina Field by tomorrow," Miroku replied, and at this, the gang eagerly nodded. Fortunately it wouldn't be long until they summoned the Goddesses and returned home to defeat Naraku once and for all.
Before they could continue ahead, Inuyasha felt it was time he said something to his friends. Of course he didn't plan to reveal Link's personal issues, he wouldn't do that even if faced with death itself. "Last night, Emmett spoke to me and Link," He explained, and it was enough to bring confusion to the others, except Link.
"You spoke with him last night? Why didn't you say anything this morning?" Kagome asked looking at Inuyasha almost hurtfully. "That's not like you…"
Inuyasha crossed his arms. "I was going to, so keep your skirt on."
Despite his and Kagome's bantering, Miroku stepped forward with perked interest. "Did you ask him about how to summon the Goddesses?"
Inuyasha nodded. "Yeah. It's not that hard. We just got to go back to Ikana and summon them on that tower with the pendants," He explained with a shrug.
Kagome gasped. "I-Ikana? We're going back there…" That's where Sakon had taken her before and it wasn't a place Kagome was fond of. In fact, she dreaded returning there.
"Not that place!" Shippo cried out beside Hideki. "That place is haunted!" A chill swept through the tyke's body at the remembrance of those Redeads they had encountered before and that giant skeleton King they had battled against. That place was nothing but bad news.
Sango only frowned at Shippo and Kagome, despite their fear of returning. "If that's where we should summon the Goddesses, then we have no choice."
"Ikana is the closest region where the portal to the Goddesses Realm resides," Link explained, earning everyone's interest, besides Inuyasha who already knew. "The portal rests just above Stone Tower. It would be the closest way to call out to them."
Understanding, Miroku stroked his chin thoughtfully. "I see. If that's the case then it's all the more reason to head there. We should arrive there in a day and a half." Because of this, they decided they should head northeast.
"Wait, if we do that, then what about Hideki?" Shippo asked. "We still have to drop him off." The child knew that Hideki's home was in the opposite direction, and he wasn't about to have Kagome's promise break.
"That's right!" Kagome gasped. "We'll have to make that two days and a half then … First things first, let's get Hideki home."
Hideki only shook his head. "No, please don't worry too much about me. I can manage the rest of the way to Southern Swamp."
"No way! Kirara and I will take you!" Shippo exclaimed, and it brought surprised stares from his friends.
"By yourselves? Shippo we can't do that. What if something happens…" Kagome frowned. The thought of letting the children go off on their own didn't set well with her.
"It's alright," Shippo reassured. "I'll watch over Hideki. Kirara and I will meet you on the way to Ikana."
"Are you sure?" Kagome asked bending down before the fox child. She really didn't want them to go off on their own.
Inuyasha only huffed. "Well that works out for us then. The sooner we get to Ikana the better. They'll be fine."
Understanding, Kagome watched at the children climbed atop the feline, prepared to set off North. Her motherly instincts caused her to step closer to Kirara and kiss Shippo on the forehead and hug Hideki close to her chest before kissing him on his forehead as well; it was enough to bring a small blush to the Deku's cheeks. "Be safe you two."
Looking over at Kagome, Inuyasha felt himself sweat drop when he saw her crying slightly. What the hell was she crying for? "Why are you crying?"
Wiping her tears away, Kagome looked at Inuyasha despondently. "I miss them already…"
He rolled his eyes. Why were girls so sentimental? "Shippo will be back." He knew the tyke was stronger than he looked, so it was no reason to cry over.
"Yeah … but not Hideki…" She softly replied.
Inuyasha blinked. It seemed she had definitely grown attached to that Deku. Looking around, he caught something from the corner of his eye and he bent down and handed Kagome a log, and she looked at it in confusion. "There, now you have a new stick child."
Kagome instantly pouted at this and glared at Inuyasha as he walked away from her snickering. "That's not funny Inuyasha!" She threw the log and huffed as she followed behind the half demon.
While it was fun to make fun of the priestess, especially since she always had a habit of becoming irritable so easily, Inuyasha realized it was not the time for such. Looking off in the direction of Ikana, he knew they were very close to wrapping up their journey. "Well let's get this over with."
Pausing suddenly, Kagome felt her face heat up and she watched dismally as her friends sauntered past her to follow after the half demon. There was a feeling in her lower abdomen and she knew that feeling all too well. "Wait!" Her suddenly call caused her friends to stop and look at her in confusion. "Before we go, can we take a small break real quick?"
"What for?" Asked Inuyasha.
Noticing the blush appear upon the young girl's face and the way in which she stood, her legs closed tightly together and her feet moving in place awkwardly, the slayer understood. "I think that would be a good idea. I could use a break as well."
With annoyance, the half demon crossed his arms irritably. "Fine. But make it quick."
"Sango," Kagome grasped the slayer's hand suddenly. "want to go to the bathroom?" She asked. She was sure the slayer had to go; after all it had been hours since they last went.
Sango smiled but she agreed. "Better now than later."
Elated by this, Kagome quickly picked up her backpack and followed Sango into the trees where they would have some privacy from the guys who remained behind.
But Sango paused and sent a glare at Miroku, who was silently watching them. "Don't even think about following us Miroku."
He was offended by this. "I am hurt that you would think so lowly of me."
Inuyasha rolled his eyes at the monk. "Why not? I do."
With one final glare at Miroku, Sango disappeared into the trees with Kagome, and the guys decided they should relieve themselves as well. Miroku was more modest than Inuyasha and had excused himself in the opposite direction, not for sneaky intentions but he much preferred his privacy.
While Inuyasha relieved himself upon a tree trunk, Link found himself silently musing, his attention shifted to his scarred hands. He was feeling the scars on his skin, especially the one just underneath his eye. When he touched that spot, he felt a tinge of pain there, but he likely assumed it was because of his death four years ago. Link assumed he injured his eye then, or worse, he might have lost it.
OOO
As Sango busied herself behind some bushes, well concealed from Kagome on the other side behind a few trees, she heard the priestess pilfer through her yellow bag. "Is everything okay, Kagome?"
"Yeah. Looking for my hand sanitizer," She replied, pushing through the books and assortments of clothing. Eventually she pulled out a small clear bottle of the liquid and made a triumphant sound. "Found it!"
As Sango reemerged from the bushes, she watched as the young girl poured the clear liquid from the bottle onto her hand. There was a citrus smell that accompanied after and Sango couldn't help but lean into Kagome curiously. "Hand sanitizer?" She asked. It was the first time she had ever seen or smelled such a liquid from Kagome's world.
Kagome nodded. "Yep! It's always good to use this after touching anything that could be infested with germs. It can help prevent sicknesses, which is why I always carry some on me at all times." While rubbing the sanitizer onto her hands, Kagome handed the bottle to Sango, who applied a little to her own hands.
After finally rubbing it in, Sango couldn't help but smile. Her hands felt smoother and smelled much like citrusy fruits. She was about to hand the bottle back to her friend, but she paused when she saw Kagome staring at her hand with a shocked expression. "Kagome? What's wrong?"
"It's gone," She replied, flipping her hand each and every way. "Sango, the mark is gone!"
Surprised, Sango grasped Kagome's hand and true to her words, it was no longer there. "But how can that be? It never washed off at the hot springs…" In truth, the slayer wasn't sure what the mark signified, besides the fact that it was Dark Link who placed it there.
"My hand sanitizer removed the mark!" Kagome exclaimed joyously.
Of course Sango was a little skeptical that it was the power of her hand sanitizer that had worked its magic, but stranger things had happened before. "I guess it wasn't anything to worry about after all. Do you feel alright Kagome?"
Kagome was all smiles. "Yeah. I never felt better. What a relief…"
OOO
After distancing himself from the group to relieve himself, Miroku sighed contentedly. It was thanks to Kagome he could take a small break, otherwise he wasn't sure how long he could stand walking with a full bladder.
Fixing his robes, Miroku heard a sound from behind him, and grasping his staff against the tree, he swiftly turned to defend himself against an attack, but he paused when he saw someone familiar standing before him. "It's you!"
A laugh reverberated from the peddler's throat. He looked just as Miroku remembered since their encounter back in Clock Town; he was dressed in purple silken robes, his burgundy hair neatly cut and a hefty bag upon his bag decorated with ornate masks of various kinds. "We meet again."
What a surprise running into him! Miroku couldn't have felt any better than he did at this moment. "We've been searching for you," The monk explained with a sigh of relief. They'd been meaning to search him out for some time in order to figure out a way to summon the Goddesses. "I heard from Inuyasha you met with him and Link last night. You said we must head for Ikana in order to summon the Goddesses."
He nodded. "That is all true. But I came to warn you that you and your friends' troubles are far from over. You will likely encounter my rival, Armaros once more. I can no longer aid you and your friends this time with my magic…"
Of course that was to be expected. "That is fine. We are very grateful for all that you've done to give us a second chance. Thank you for that. We shall repay you—"
"There is no need for such," The peddler laughed. "But this wasn't the only reason I came to speak with you, monk. You seem to be the brains of the group, a resourceful companion and I felt I should ask if Link has said anything more of what happened last night?"
Miroku was befuddled at this. What was Emmett speaking of? "I'm sorry? Since this morning, Link hasn't said much of anything." He wondered if the young boy was feeling alright, and he guessed that whatever must have happened during their encounter that night must have had an impact upon his persona.
How disappointing. It seemed Link had remained silent about that particular subject. "I see. He did not tell you. Well it is not a terrible dilemma, but it does pose some concerns related to you and your friends, especially the priestess."
Huh? Miroku didn't understand. What did Link know that would bring about concerns to their group? Was there something Link was hiding? If so, then why? "I'm sure Link would trust us by now to say something." He explained as if waving off the peddler's concern. "There is no reason to speak to us about his personal issues, Emmett."
Emmett only shook his head in disappointment. "It is more than just a slight issue, monk. If not confronted, then it could hurt you and the others. Aren't you just al little curious?"
Miroku arched a brow. Why did it seem strange the merchant was speaking of Link's secretive issues? As far as he knew, it wasn't really any of his business. "Is it so troubling that it would even hurt Kagome?"
"Yes. So much that it could bring the priestess to cause self-harm to herself…"
The monk took a step back, his eyes wide in surprise. Cause self-harm? Surely it wasn't something so huge that would bring harm to his friends. "What is Link hiding?"
"Did you not want to confront him yourself? Are you sure you can trust me and not look the other way?" Emmett asked, and after slight hesitation from Miroku, the monk shook his head. At this, the merchant continued. "I spoke with Link last night but it seems your friend Inuyasha overheard our conversation. Therefore I assumed he would notify all of you immediately."
"If it concerns the safety of my friends, then tell me," Miroku replied, his expression stern.
"Your friend Link …" He began watching as the monk watched him nervously. "like all the residents of Termina, is no longer part of the living."
Taken aback from this, Miroku stepped back, his eyes wide in disbelief. "What do you mean no longer part of the living?" That was impossible. Link was dead? All the citizens in this world were dead?
"Termina is an afterlife for spirits who have not accepted their fate. Link has not passed on for some time now. His soul, just as the rest of this world can't wait much longer; after all, this world is destined to perish soon," The Happy Mask Salesman explained with a shake of his head, though his maniacal smile remained. "I helped him to regain his memories last night. So you see why this might pose a concern to you and your friends…"
Miroku clenched the staff in his hand tightly and he glared at Emmett. It couldn't be true. "Tell me you are lying. Is this certain? Why have you not told us this before?" He wasn't sure if hearing this changed their objective or not. They were planning on saving Termina after all, but hearing this… "Are you saying this land is a purgatory? That everyone we have come across is already dead?"
"Correct."
'Link is dead?' How could that be? This world felt real, the people were certainly real. Dying was possible here! Miroku had seen and felt it in battle, and he certainly saw most of his friends near death since this past month. "What of us? My friends and I?" He asked the peddler, who only laughed at the question.
"Well you're all very much alive. After all, you were all brought here for a purpose to save this land from its inevitable doom," Emmett replied, his laughter subsiding. "I do not have much time left right now. I am, after all, a very busy man. I'm sure this won't be the last you'll see of me." Turning around, he was about to leave but paused a moment. Looking back over his shoulder, he sent a wide grin to the monk. "Believe in …" He paused again; his eyebrows narrowing slightly in frustration and his smile faded but soon reappeared. "Yes… believe in your strengths. Just believe monk and you and your friends are sure to succeed."
Watching as the peddler disappeared beyond the trees, the monk brought a hand to his chest and his eyes fell upon the forest ground warily. It couldn't be true. Could it? Miroku wasn't sure whether or not to believe the peddler, after all, he had always known Inuyasha to come out and reveal such startling news. It wouldn't be like him to hide it.
OOO
Looking over at Link, Inuyasha felt his ears droop slightly. 'Damn, he doesn't look so good!' Hell if he was in Link's situation, he wasn't sure what he would do. He could only imagine the pain he felt this moment. As he approached Link, who was sitting upon a log, his shoulder hunched over and his bangs covering his eyes, Inuyasha ran his hand through his silver hair almost irritably. "Uh … You know this might be stupid but it's the only thing I can think of. Are you okay?" He asked.
The young boy only nodded, his blue eyes shifting to meet his amber ones. Link forced a slight smile, but Inuyasha saw the pain behind it. "I'm fine."
'No you're not,' Were Inuyasha's thoughts. "Don't worry too much about it. I told you last night we'll find a way to reverse this. I'm not leaving Termina without you, Link, and I know the others wouldn't either."
Link frowned. "But if it's impossible to restore my life, then you should all return to your world. You have to defeat Naraku."
The half demon growled at Link's negative thinking. "What did I say about acting like that? Stop moping around and cheer up. I know it hurts, but I'm sure there's a way. Trust me on this Link."
A sigh escaped the young warrior and he looked off into the distance where the girls left. Link knew they would return shortly, but he couldn't bring himself to smile. "Kagome…"
Inuyasha looked down. Man he hated this. The half demon wanted to hug him, but his pride refused to let that happen. Things were starting to look up and now it seemed Link was regressing back into his shell.
"I guess this explains a lot," Link softly replied, his eyes still looking back at the forest. "Why I'm here and why it always seemed impossible to find my way back to Hyrule…" Another sigh escaped him. Thinking back, he remembered his place of death and how he had died. "How could it be possible to resurrect the dead, Inuyasha? Surely my body back in the Lost Woods is decomposed beyond belief." Link was sure that by now some Wolfos had carried his bones off somewhere to feast upon.
A thought suddenly occurred to the half demon, but he hesitated on saying anything. But at the sight of his friend's despair, he couldn't help but keep anything hidden. "Back … in the Feudal Era, resurrecting dead people isn't impossible," He explained.
Hearing this, Link shifted his gaze back to Inuyasha standing in front of him.
"The Sacred Jewel managed to resurrect a number of people, even demons, especially those who had been dead for years," Inuyasha recalled the Band of Seven, a group of mercenaries that had been brought back to life because of Naraku. They had been nothing but bones but the fragments of the jewel had given them flesh once more. "What am I thinking? That wouldn't work!" Inuyasha wanted to pull his hair angrily.
"What … wouldn't work?" Link asked. He had suddenly become interested in the power of the Shikon No Tama, but he wasn't certain it could truly grant such a wish.
Inuyasha crossed his arms. "Well … if the Goddesses don't grant our wish to bring you back to life, I thought maybe Kagome…" He hesitated a moment before growling irritably. "maybe Kagome could use her powers over the jewel to recreate a body for you so that you could live again," He replied.
Dumbfounded, Link almost felt a small smile grace his lips, but from the expression on the half demon's face, his smile faulted. No, Link guessed it wouldn't be that simple after all. "But it wouldn't be permanent…" Link finished for the half demon, and Inuyasha only nodded at this. "You need the jewel to its full completion in order to defeat Naraku and grant your own wish, and I assume from the stories you and your friends have shared with me, you wish to do away with it for good. If you were to give my life back with a piece of the jewel, there would be no point, especially if my life was limited for such a short time."
"I guess now that I think about it, Kagome wouldn't have the heart to do that to you, considering the dangers of the jewel," Inuyasha replied dismally. "Do you remember us bringing up Sango's brother, Kohaku?"
Link nodded. "The one who is controlled by Naraku? Yes. He lives only because of the jewel fragment in his back. If removed, he dies."
"Either way, don't worry too much over it. Like I said before, I'll ask those Goddesses. There's no way in this hellish world I'm leaving you behind, Link."
Hearing this brought a weak smile to Link's face, and the youth nodded at him. "Thank you Inuyasha."
Hearing a familiar feminine laughter approaching them from the woods, Inuyasha flashed Link with another smile before patting him on the back. "Don't worry and just leave everything to me, okay? For now, don't look so glum or else you'll worry Kagome. You love her, so don't make her worry."
As the girls returned to meet up with Inuyasha and Link, the monk found it difficult to move from his place behind the trees. His back was firmly pressed against the bark of a tree, his eyes wide and there was an aching pain in his chest. So, it was true. Inuyasha had known all along and hadn't said a word to him or the others, and from the sound of their conversation, Inuyasha seemed positive not to let anyone know, especially Kagome.
