The loud bang and screams coming from the front door startle us all. Sam is marching towards us, looking the angriest I've ever seen. He grabs David by the collar, and I jump right away, trying to stop him.
—Hey! Take it easy, Sam! I grab and pull his arm, but he shoves me off so aggressively that Seth has to catch me so I won't fall to the ground.
—What the hell, Sam!?
—We found the bodies mutilated in a ditch! Sam is shaking, and David seems surprised but won't say anything. I stand up again, reaching for his arm on David's throat, but Seth holds me back.
—It wasn't him! I scream, and Sam's eyes at me are scary, but I can't step away from them. Maybe he won't turn and attack David if I'm this close.
—He can hide his scent too, you know that! He did it! Sam is basically lifting David from the ground, and Seth pulls me back, but he's as surprised as I am angry, and I find a way to break his grip and go back to Sam, pulling his arm away.
—Get off him! David, tell him it wasn't you! There is no way it was David. He's with us all the time!
Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Rosalie, Quil, Embry, and Paul are inside the greenhouse now, surrounding us.
—They seem to have decided it's my fault. David is perfectly calm, and I'm about to start hitting Sam.
—You little… Sam is visibly shaking now.
—Look at his eyes! They are not red like before! Carlisle, tell him!
—It takes time for them to change. Carlisle's comment is like a slap on David's face.
—Let go! I pull Sam's arm, and Seth must've seen something in his eyes because he grabbed me, lifting me away from him. —You have proof?! You can't kill him without proof!
—He's a vampire! Sam screams.
—We all are!
—Sam! Jake comes inside, too, followed by Edward.
—It wasn't him. Edward says, rushing towards us. —We found the vampire responsible.
Edward's words make Sam loosen his grip, so I get away from Seth and push him again. This time, he moves, and I can get between them, making David step back.
—Where is it? Sam stares at me viciously and back at Edward.
—In the forest with Jasper and Emmett. We are going to question him now. Edward says like he's calling us to join them.
I step forward, ready to follow. It will be good to see that vampire suffer the consequences of what he did.
—Where are you going? David asks, and I turn around as everyone walks towards the door.
—To interrogate him. I say firmly. This is why I was gathering information and studying Padrone's movements. This is how we find him, so I'm without question going with them. David grabs me by my arm, making me turn.
—You can't-
Seth grabs his arm, and David lets go of me. They look back to fighting mode, but I have no time for this. Interrogating the vampire comes first, so I run towards the door. Esme stops in front of me, blocking my way.
—I'm going too.
—No. You're staying here. Her voice is severe and unwavering.
—But I have the right to be there! I want to-
—You're staying here, all three of you, and that's final. Her words glue my feet on the ground, making me lower my head as I feel the anger boiling in my guts. She walks away with the others, and the silence is back in the glass castle.
I run to the supply closet and bang the door shut. I'm so angry I'm kicking the wall, screaming in my mind, the only semi-private place in this house.
STUPID SAM! I'm-NOT-a-damn-useless-HUMAN! I'm a vampire too, and I have the right to be there! WHY WON'T THEY TREAT ME LIKE A ONE? They said David was my responsibility and they would share information but THE DAMN SECRETS WON'T STOP! I know they'll torture him; I'm not stupid! I want to see it! I WANT him to feel the pain! I want him to suffer for what he did, get answers out of him and burn his dismembered body! BUT-THESE-STUPID-POWERS-ARE-USELESS!
—
Seth and David are outside the supply closet room, hearing Anne vent her anger at the wall.
—This is all your fault. Seth says, angry at David.
—Yeah, I was the one that made her angry. David can't believe how dumb and blind Seth is to Anne's feelings. Even he, an outsider, can see it.
—This wouldn't be happening if you weren't here.
—She's angry because you're suffocating her. That's one of the reasons, and since it's the one that'll make Seth the most enraged, that's the one he goes with. It's petty, but Anne spends more time with him every time Seth acts angry, so it became his habit to push his buttons any opportunity he gets.
—What did you say?!
—She can't take a step without you breathing down her neck!
—Because you tried to kill her! Twice!
—No, it's because you don't trust her. None of you do. You keep her in a cage, like a pet.
Seth grabs him by the collar. —What do you know? You just met her!
—I have known her longer than you.
—Because you worked for the man that killed her family!
Anne is kicking the wall again, this time more vigorously. Seth releases David and turns his attention to her.
—She'll kick down the wall and run there. David says.
—She won't. Esme told her to stay here, so she will. She is like her alpha. David doesn't understand Seth's words, but he knows how much Anne respects Esme, so she'll most likely listen to her.
—
I can't calm down. I had never felt this angry before. The screaming in my mind won't stop, and I'm sure Edward can hear me from wherever he is.
They won't say anything even when I ask a hundred times. Even Renesmee treats me like her "human friend." I did all that research, but Jasper won't even listen to my ideas! He thinks I'm naive to trust Mirania's memories, and everyone listens to him because he's "the oldest" and "got military experience" or whatever but guess what? I can do a better job than him anytime, any day! The thought hit me like a slap. I can get a better job than him. I can find where Padrone is faster. I just need David to cooperate.
I open the door fast, making Seth and David step back. —Are they back?
—No. Seth answers.
—Can you hear them? I ask David.
—No, they are very far. I close the door again.
I can do it. If I join my research with David's, I can find Padrone. Who cares about being careful? David already proved he's on our side.
—This is the angriest I've ever seen her. She usually has a good poker face.
—I know; what's up with that?
—I don't know. I can never tell if she's angry until she explodes.
—I CAN HEAR YOU! I scream after hearing David and Seth talking about me behind the door. I'm doing it!
I open the door again and walk outside the closet. —We are finding Padrone right now.
—We? David asks, confused. He was never given any pieces of information about our findings.
—Yes. Before they return, I go to the center table and open the computer screen, pulling the information I backed up on Eve.
—How? Seth asks, looking at me type.
—Like this. I project the map I modified from Jasper's research in the air and show it to David. All the information and our progress are right there for him to see. If he was with Padrone, we could never find him after reveling all this, but I was sure David was on our side.
—You mapped all this? David observes the projected image of the map he gave us.
—Half. The other half is Jasper's research.
—He gave you that? Seth has one eyebrow up.
—Ahm… no. I… hacked his computer.
—Brilliant. David seems more excited about it than Seth. His eyes are full of disapproval, but I ignore them.
—I used his info and the memories I had left from Mirania to try and find the pattern you talked about.
—I thought Jasper told you not to trust that. Seth is still resisting.
—Jasper says many things, but won't listen to me, so I did what I had to do. David, look, I marked red the places they've been to and blue the areas with the highest disappearance numbers. The higher the rate, the more chances of a considerable concentration of vampires due to the nature of the cases. In yellow are the places we haven't been to yet, and the extra orange dot on the side of these are the places Mirania has been to.
—Well, he's probably not up north. He only went there when he needed a new list of vampires, and now I guarantee he's not thinking about new experiments. He picked Cinque from there, saying she was a present from someone. He's probably around here, closer to us. Can I see the numbers for these cities?
I put them on the screen for him.
—There. He points to a metropolis on the map.
—But that's a big city. We avoided those because they are so open, and you said he would be in a small town.
—I know, but after the attack, I can tell he's rushing. He's not fishing for vampires; he could be there. That base was one of his favorite hideaways.
—How can you be sure? Seth asks.
David thinks for a moment and looks at me. —How good are you with that computer?
—My dad ran an IT company for over one hundred years, and I hacked his security system when I was 5, so yeah, pretty good. I was pretty proud of my skills, although they were useless when fighting a vampire.
—If I give you an IP from that base, can you check if it's active?
—If I can reach then I can connect to their network.
—It's for the cooling system. I used to have to reboot it often, so I memorized it.
—The system is connected to the mainframe for sure. If we can reach it, then I can get in.
—Maybe you can connect to the cameras inside. Seth is much more interested now. I guess the action finally got him.
—How good is his firewall?
—Very good. He'll probably catch you right away.
—Only if I good too far. We just need confirmation that the base is active, so I'll play safe and check the electricity consumption of the area to see if there are any abnormalities.
If I can connect to the cooling system and into the electric framework, I can peek at how much electricity the area uses. Padrone does experiments and has a cooling system, so he most likely processes heavy data there. This means the usage for that area will be way over the average if he's using the lab.
—Did you get in? Seth is next to me, watching me type in the information David gave us into the program.
—Give a minute. This is totally illegal, so I'm making sure not to leave anything behind.
—Got it! And the consumption has been crazy high for a while now, look! He's been there for at least a month. I can't believe I did it.
—You found him. You're amazing! Seth is very excited about my success, and so's David, but more discreetly.
—Good, you know.
—What'll you do? Are you just gonna tell them? David is asking if I'm going to share this information with Jasper and the others right away.
—Of course, she will. Seth looks at me, waiting for my confirmation, but I have other plans.
—No, I'm gonna bargain.
—What?! Seth may not understand, but I earned the right to go after Padrone myself, and I'm using this as my bargain chip.
—I want it in Seth. Also, this information is all David had to use as leverage for his life. I can't just give it to them without a deal.
—This is wrong. We came this far together, and Jasper's information helped you find this place. They're our family.
—I know, but I'm tired of the secrets. I don't need them to hide things from me because they don't think I can't take it. I'm not sitting pretty and waiting for my problems to be solved for me.
When I hear someone open the door, I close all the windows and stand up, Seth and David on each side, waiting to listen to what happened. Jasper, Carlisle, Esme, Sam, and Edward came to talk to us.
—What did he say?
—He was watching us. He didn't know how closely Sam protected the borders and the city, so he fed carelessly. He said Padrone sent him to watch us. Jasper sounds like he squeezed every bit of information from that vampire.
—Does he know where he is?
—No. He got orders by phone. I can't trace it; it's a burner. Jasper looks disappointed.
—But now we know we are on the right track. We must be closing in. He also mentioned that Mirania and Giannini are looking for him. Edward has no idea how right he is.
—She won't know where he is. David says.
—But you all do. Edward finally read our minds. I knew he would, but I don't think this will weaken my bargain.
—They do? Carlisle sounds very surprised.
—We found him, I think.
—How? Jasper is even more surprised than him, and I'm holding back my smile the best I can.
—First, I want to find him too. You have to take me.
—You negotiating now? Sam is glaring at David and me. He looks at Seth too, but he is avoiding his eyes.
—Yes. I also want you to guarantee David can stay. I wouldn't have found Padrone if it wasn't for him. He also is innocent of the attacks, so there is no reason to kick him out. Last, you tell me everything you know.
—How did you find him? Jasper seems doubtful of my skills. I can feel the grin on my lips as I project the screen over the table again.
—I used the information you collected about the cities with my own, and David did the rest.
—My information? Jasper looks confused about how I got his research.
—She hacked you. Edward was faster than me at telling him the truth. He's almost laughing at him.
—This is not funny. Jasper is annoyed.
—You thought I couldn't help. You all did. So, I took matters into my own hands.
—You exposed all of our work to him without permission. That's what you did. Now, where is he?
—What about my terms? I'm not backing down on what I want.
Jasper crosses his arms and smiles at me. —Edward has read your mind. We already know his location.
—I thought we were closer than that. You sang happy birthday to me not too long ago. He hesitates at my comment. I was ready to use our relationship to keep him honest since I couldn't win against their powers. I had to make do with what I had, their love for me.
—All right. Esme takes a step forward, smiling at me. —She earned it. She beat you, boys fair and square. I smile at her and then back at Jasper. He's still looking displeased, but he agrees.
—…Fine. Now, where is he?
I pull the map on the screen and show them the area we found. —There.
—But that's a huge city. I thought you said to look for small towns. Jasper looks suspiciously at David.
—After the attack, I thought something was off. I was sure Cinque was making him an army, but it all felt rushed. I told you this was not like him. David explains.
—And you know how to hack a computer? Jasper still doesn't believe in what I can do.
—My father ran a small IT company for over a century. It's how we had money to live in hiding. He taught me everything I know.
—Your father? You never mentioned that. Esme and the others seemed very surprised I brought up my family.
—None of you ever asked. I'm not upset about it. I understand you must've thought it was a sensitive topic to me, and it is, but it doesn't mean I can't talk about it. I'm not the same person I was when you found me in the forest.
—I guess you're right. Esme smiles.
—We are doing the hunting this time. Edward got me all excited for this with his words. I'm putting an end to Padrone once and for all.
