Anne's cries echo the forest, and Carlisle is holding back not to hurt David, but Emmett isn't. He's just thankful Esme isn't here to hear it because if he feels like this, he can only imagine how heartbroken she would be if she could listen to the girl suffering like this.
—What the hell is your problem? Emmett grabs David by the collar, trying not to rip his head off for what he said. She became like a little sister to him, just like Renesmee, and David's words appeared so random that he could only think he wanted to hurt her on purpose.
—She had to hear it. David firmly believed he had to open Anne's eyes to avoid seeing her treated like she couldn't do anything.
—Does it sound like you helped her? Carlisle had great hopes for David after Anne started to help him, but he just stepped on the hand they reached out by hurting her like that.
Emmett can't hold back anymore and hits David again, but he won't fight back. —You are the one that needs to hear. Jasper knows about her father. Emmett can see David cower at his words.
—I'll tell her… today. David decided he couldn't keep lying to her, not after he admitted to himself his reason not to drink human blood.
—You better keep your mouth shut, or I'll rip it apart! Emmett was dead serious about his threat. She couldn't know about that.
Anne is screaming her heart about now, wailing the pain out of her body.
—Seth is there. Carlisle can tell the boy is trying to calm her down, but it doesn't seem to be working.
—Can they hear us from the house? If they are far enough, Rose won't have to hear Anne rip her heart out like this.
—No, but-
—Carlisle, what is happening?! Edward came down to check on the screams. —Renesmee is in a panic.
Edward gets all the information he needs from their thoughts, and he can hear Anne and Seth not too far from there too. He doesn't hold back and hits David before grabbing him as Emmett did. —You… If something happens because of you…
—They are leaving. Carlisle says, listening to their steps moving away.
—Where? Emmett asks, listening too.
—Seth is going for the car. He'll take her to his house. Where is Esme? Edward knows how much this will hurt her. It might be challenging to keep David alive when she finds out.
—She went out with Alice, but they should be coming back by now. Let's go. Carlisle wishes he could avoid Esme's suffering, but she's so connected to Anne that it's impossible to stop her from worrying when she's involved.
Esme is back from shopping with Alice and is taking the bags of the car when she sees Carlisle approach the house.
—Carlisle? She looks behind them, but Anne is not there. Maybe she is with Seth again. —Where is Anne? Emmett is dragging David and tosses him to the ground; his eyes won't meet hers, and she can feel her heart drop. She drops the bags on the ground and runs to him.
—Carlise… where is she? Her voice is urgent now, as even her husband seems unable to answer her.
—Esme… Carlisle has his eyes on her, trying to find the words to what happened.
Esme holds David by the shoulders, shaking him. —What happened? What did you do?! Her mind is going to the worst places possible, and Edward can't take it anymore.
—She's with Seth. They crossed the border by now, but she's alive.
—Are they… Alice has her vision clear as day in her mind.
—No, I don't think they are leaving. Edward says, calming her down.
—Edward, what happened? Esme pronounces her question word by word, pressing him into telling her why Anne is not there.
—How could you say those things to her?! Renesmee approaches David, but Jake stops her from getting too close.
—Sorry, I couldn't hold her. Bella comes right behind them. Renesmee refused to stay in the house any longer. She couldn't lie to her friend anymore, and hearing her cry like that was the final straw.
—How could you lie to her again? David knows where his fault lies, but he also knows whose fault is things got to this point. Their silence was what tipped Anne over the edge.
—We tried to protect her. Bella says.
—You were trying to control her by reading minds and looking to the future instead of looking at her. David is not as old as them, but he's seen his fair share of stubborn vampires that only listen to themselves, thinking that a long life means wisdom when it actually meant a more closed mind.
—You didn't say anything either. What was your excuse to lie? Rosalie knew why David was there, they all did, and she also saw something else. Something that was written in his face, clear as day.
—What did you say to her? Esme asks, raising her voice above the others. David looks away, unable to repeat the words that made Anne cry like her heart was being ripped out.
—He insinuated that we didn't tell her our findings because we didn't see her as equal. Carlisle tried to spare Esme of the most painful details of David's words.
Esme takes out her phone and starts calling Anne right away.
—I said what she needed to hear to break the cycle of lies you created.
—Did you tell her about her father? This started when Jasper found out about David's history with Anne's father and Alice's visions. He doesn't answer, but Edward shakes his head no to Jasper.
—She's not picking up. Why is she not picking up? Esme is losing her mind to worry right now.
—She needs space. Let her think. Rosalie was no stranger to how Anne went above and beyond to ensure she wasn't in their way. She sacrificed a lot to be with them and was terrified of being alone. David's words made her face her biggest insecurity, not knowing where she fit in their world.
—She's out there, believing we think less of her for not being a full vampire because of him. Alice saw her drive away and never come back, Rosalie. I won't see that happen. I can't.
—She's not leaving… I think. She's very indecisive. Alice can only see so much with her in that state.
—Can't we go after her? Renesmee could still hear her screams.
—Not across the border. Edward couldn't break that rule; none of them could, not even for Anne.
—Would Sam do something to her? She's not human. Esme still has her phone close to her ear, but still no answer.
—Seth took her himself, and she doesn't drink blood, so no, I don't think he will. Jacob is hesitant about his answer, but he doesn't want to make things worse by suggesting Sam would hurt Anne or say they broke their agreement. Sam wasn't very fond of the girl, especially after she defended David, but he wasn't unreasonable; she was more human than a vampire.
—Renesmee, did you hear what happened? How did she react? Esme needs to know what Anne's reaction was. If she was just angry at them, she could talk sense into her and avoid more suffering.
—I did, but… Renesmee is looking at Carlisle and her dad, hesitant.
—Show me. Please. Esme is, holding her hands and begging at this point.
—She was sad and angry, Esme, but she's unharmed and with Seth. He'll take care of her. Esme ignores Carlisle's words. He wouldn't understand the urge inside her, the need to know.
—Renesmee… Esme is in front of Renesmee, imploring to know.
Carlisle gives in and nods to Renesmee, giving her permission to show it to Esme.
She lets the memories and her feelings travel to Esme and watches her bend over, feeling her pain a thousand times stronger. Esme did all she could so Anne didn't have to go through that pain again, but a couple of lies were enough because she failed her. Anne would never believe those words if she had been honest.
Carlisle grabs her at the last second before she can get her hands on David. —Why did you hurt her?! She could see his feelings too, so how could he hurt her like that?
—Why did you lie then? I said those things for the same reason you did; because I care about her. David firmly believed he took the right decision, but it doesn't mean he doesn't bewail causing her pain. He did, very, very much regret that.
—If she doesn't come back, you'll rue ever showing up here. We let it go when you attacked her because she asked us to, but I swear if I lose her because of you, a scientist will be the least of your problems. Esme wasn't making empty threats out of anger, and David knew that.
She turns around and goes back to calling Anne, just to get to hear her voice mail message over and over.
—Put him back in the storage and tie him up with something loud. Jasper was just improvising, as he didn't believe David would run. The pain in him was too deep for him to run away from what he did, but he could hide from them, so it's better to be safe than sorry.
—I'm not going anywhere. David wouldn't leave before making sure she was ok.
As the night gets deeper, Esme is still calling and texting Anne. She's pacing around the border a little too close now, and Sam and Paul are watching her. Jake told them about Anne, and as he hoped, Sam let it go. She didn't drink blood, so it wasn't his problem.
—Esme, you need blood. Alice also needs to get some, but she can't walk away with Esme like that. She's been there for hours at this point.
—I'm fine. She'll be back soon. I have to be here. Esme won't move from there. Anne will come back to her; she has to.
—Seth will protect her. Jasper tried his best to avoid putting Anne through this, but the lies caught up with them.
—He's alone! What if she gets hurt? How can she heal without us? Anne needed a vampire to recover from injuries, but across this invisible line, there were none. She would simply die.
—She's always careful Esme, you know that. She won't even touch a knife. Rosalie says, watching Esme walking side to side before picking up her phone to call Seth again. Anne turned off hers, so she was trying to convince Seth to talk to her.
—This is my fault. She says she's fine all the time, but I should've known. I should've asked Edward to read her mind or something.
—Relying on our powers created this problem. They can only tell us so much, and she's way more human than Renesmee, so her emotions are always taking the best of her. It's like raising a newborn vampire. As much as they liked Anne, it was challenging to keep up with her. She would try to mimic them and act like her emotions were under control, but they knew she was pushing herself to look more like them, to blend in with the vampires that blended in with humans.
—She hates us. Esme can't stop drowning in her fears.
—She needs space. Alice says, but also unable to move from that spot like all of them. —We were also confused by her silence.
—She'll be back. She could never hate you. Rosalie knew how true that was. If there was one thing she was sure about Anne, it was that she would never betray them or leave Esme. Anne's love for her bordered adoration.
They spend the whole night by the border, waiting until finally, Seth calls Esme.
