I had to find someone. Anyone. I couldn't be alone. Is that the position I had worked myself to?

Odd had a glow about him these days, and it was not because of me. It was because of Ebony. And that made me mad. What did she have that I didn't?

The sun was fading into the darkness as I walked slowly across the boardwalk in search of companionship...until that is, I heard another pair of footsteps behind me.

I paused and to glance behind. Something caught my attention, and in the farthest corner of my mind, I heard someone call my name.

I must be insane. Odd would know what to do. Odd was perfect.

I walked a little faster.

"Aelita," a soft voice called. "Blood of France Hopper."

I began to run.

With every step, I made one more wish that Odd were here. One more wish that I could attract him like Ebony could. One more chance to blink away the tears.

"Aelita," innocence whispered in my ear. "Blood of unbendable clay."

I quickly spun around. "Who are you?" I called into the golden sky. I felt a fast shadow begin to engulf me as I fell to the ground. And then I felt someone physically grab me. The shadow lifted me up into the air and towards the roof.

I screamed and struggled, only to look into the face of my captor. A swirling red glow with a head filled with purple-brown streaks. Her cold eyes glowing red held me where I was for hours it seemed.

"Ebony?" I whispered.

"X.A.N.A.," She whispered back.

I stopped wishing.

I stopped blinking away the tears.
