I apologize for the wait with this chapter. I work for a university and the last month has been crazy hectic, but things are finally slowing down now! This is the final chapter of this story, which is a little bittersweet. Hope y'all enjoy the chapter and let me know what you think!
Adrian cornered me in the hallway the next day.
"Rose," he said with a smirk. "Did you think you could avoid me?"
I sighed. "I wasn't avoiding you."
He arched an eyebrow. "You barely said two words to me yesterday in class and practically disappeared after the class ended. What would you call that?"
"Being busy?"
His face told me that he didn't believe me.
"I was busy! I had to go to the police precinct yesterday after school," I said. I glanced around before lowering my voice. "They think I killed Li-her on purpose."
"What? Why would they think that?"
I sighed again. "For one, I may have made a comment that I was going to kill her if I saw her again. I didn't mean it, but it was while I was in the hospital."
"Didn't she die from hitting her head?"
I nodded. "But I made her fall."
"After she stabbed you!"
I shushed him, looking around to see if anyone had heard. "I guess they're investigating all motives."
His eyes darkened. "Then they should be investigating me too. When I heard what she did, I was so angry. I can't say that I wouldn't have killed her if I had had the chance."
I glanced around again. "Adrian! You can't say that."
He shrugged. "It's the truth."
"It doesn't matter; you still shouldn't say it. I wouldn't be surprised if they were looking to pin this on anyone," I said.
Adrian rolled his eyes. "Fine. But you owe me details about you and Dimitri."
I raised my eyebrows. "Dimitri? Since when do you call him that?"
He grinned impishly. "Since I found out we're cousins." The minute warning bell rang before I could say anything. "See you at lunch."
Adrian winked and disappeared, leaving me standing in the hallway flabbergasted.
It was my turn to corner him when the lunch bell rang. I saw him passing by and dragged him into the library.
"Spill," I said.
He laughed. "It's not that interesting. My uncle is his father. Terrible man, though."
"Dimitri's mentioned it," I said dryly. "It never came up that you were cousins though."
Adrian shrugged. "I don't think he knew until I mentioned it. But we talked about it after you were stabbed, while we were waiting for you to get out of surgery."
I stared at him in shock. That was almost two months ago.
"Now spill about you and Belikov," Adrian said. "Are you happy?"
I smiled. "Yes. He asked me to move in with him."
"You're shitting me?"
I shook my head. "Nope. He officially asked me last night. I practically spend every night there anyway."
"I'm happy for you, Rose," he said. "You deserve some happiness after everything that you've been through."
"It's about damn time, isn't it?" I said with a laugh.
That weekend, Adrian and Sydney helped me and Dimitri move all of my things into his apartment. I left a few things behind in the apartment for Adrian to take care of later; things that reminded me too much of Lissa and things that were already at Dimitri's, like most of the furniture. Adrian had promised me that he would finish cleaning out the apartment and have it cleaned by the time the landlord came by in a couple of weeks to finish out the lease.
Dimitri and I had Adrian and Sydney over for dinner after the move was completed. During dinner, I pulled Adrian aside.
"Have you heard from Christian? All of my calls go to voicemail, and he hasn't answered any of my texts," I said.
Adrian frowned. "I haven't heard too much. He's taken the situation really hard. He's upset that he didn't see what was happening sooner."
"The next time you talk to him, will you let him know that I'm not mad at him? I don't blame him for any of this," I said.
Adrian smiled. "I'll let him know. He'll come around when he's ready."
Spring break was quickly approaching by the time that Detective Byrne called me and Dimitri back to the station.
"Rose," Detective Byrne said, meeting us in the lobby of the station. "Agent Belikov. Thank you for coming today."
I nodded, gripping Dimitri's hand.
"We asked you to come in today for a couple of reasons," he said. "If you'll follow me back, we can talk at my desk."
We followed Detective Byrne through the maze of desks at the precinct until we reached his desk. He gestured for us to sit in the two chairs in front of the desk. Detective Byrne looked at me.
"Rose, the DA's office has declined to press charges in the death of Vasilisa Dragomir," he said, his gaze never leaving me.
I nearly sighed in relief. I didn't want to give him any reason to push for reconsideration.
"Agent Belikov, you may already know this," Detective Byrne continued, "but Vincent Gallagher was killed in prison last night."
It took me a second to catch on, never having known Gallagher's first name. Based on Dimitri's reaction, he wasn't aware.
"Who?" I asked.
"We don't know," Byrne said. "There was a riot, and when it was over, Gallagher and another inmate that was affiliated with the Dragons were dead."
"So what happens now?"
"Well, the DA's office can't pursue a case against a dead person," Byrne started. I almost rolled my eyes but stopped myself just in time. "The case is being dropped."
"Just like that?"
"Miss Hathaway, do you propose that the DA's office uses an Ouija board to proceed with the case?" Detective Byrne asked, arching an eyebrow.
"Don't talk to her like that," Dimitri said, intervening. "She's just asking a question."
"It was a—"
"I'd watch your next words, if I were you, Detective," Dimitri said, cutting the man off.
Byrne's mouth snapped shut, and he pressed his lips in a tight line.
"Is there anything else?" Dimitri asked.
"No," Byrne said. "You're both free to go."
"Are you okay?" Dimitri asked me over dinner that night. "I know today was a lot to take in."
"Yeah, I'm okay," I said. "I'm glad that it's all finally over. With them both gone, I'm free. And to be honest, part of me is glad that I don't have to face him in court. Or risk the chance that a jury would find him not guilty."
"I don't think anyone would have been able to find him not guilty and keep a good conscience," Dimitri mused. "But I'm glad that you won't have to relive it all over again."
We sat in bed that night, Dimitri reading a book while I flipped through channels on the TV. I shifted in the bed, and Dimitri glanced over at me. I had finally settled on a channel when I felt the ghost of a touch on my inner thigh. I glanced down to see Dimitri aimlessly running his fingers over my bare thigh. Looking over at him, I saw that he was still engrossed in his Western novel, and I turned back to face the TV once more.
Dimitri's hand skated higher, and I closed my eyes, letting the sensations run through me. His fingers were nearly at the apex of my thighs, and I let out a moan. Dimitri froze for a moment before continuing in his seduction.
I heard the sound of something hitting the ground and opened my eyes to see that Dimitri had abandoned his book. He tugged me towards him, and I followed his pull until I was straddling him. He ran his hands up my legs and then to the hem of my shirt. I pulled him closer to me, tilting his head up so that I could kiss him.
Subconsciously, I found my hips slowly starting to grind against his. Dimitri's fingers dipped under the edge of my shirt again, except this time he didn't stop with the edge and lifted the shirt until I was helping him pull it off.
I pressed my body closer to his, my hips still grinding. Dimitri shifted so that I wasn't straddling him anymore and slowly leaned me backward on the bed until he was hovering over me. He kissed me again briefly before kneeling to pull off his shirt. His pants followed his shirt, and in the blink of an eye, Dimitri was hovering back over me again.
We made quick work of the rest of our clothes, and he kneeled up again to grab a condom out of his bedside table. I grinned at him lazily, watching as his eyes roamed over my body.
"See something you like?" I asked, smirking.
"Always," he murmured. I watched him roll the condom on before he was hovering over me again. "Are you ready?"
"Always," I said. "I'm yours."
He entered me slowly, taking his time, no matter how much I urged him to go faster. I dug my nails into his back at the sensations flowing through me. Dimitri kept the pace slow and deep, truly making love to me.
"Dimitri," I moaned, nearly overwhelmed by the sensations.
Dimitri was murmuring Russian above me, and I clutched him to me. It didn't take long for the sensations to build up until they were cresting and sending me headfirst into the strongest orgasm I had ever had. I clung to Dimitri as he worked me through my orgasm, and a moment later, I felt him still as he also came undone.
He gently pulled out after a moment and pulled off the condom, tying it off. He disappeared into the bathroom to dispose of the condom while I moved on the bed so that I was lying down the right way. Dimitri climbed into the bed with me and pulled me into his arms.
"I love you, Roza," Dimitri said.
"I love you too," I said.
With my head resting against his chest, I soon fell asleep. Right where I belonged.
Hope y'all enjoyed this story! I'll be posting edits to Taken soon (just finished the editing process for that one), so if you're a fan of that, I'd recommend re-reading soon as a few things are changing! I'm also in the process of writing a new story and have a few more ideas that are swirling around, so stay tuned!
