Katyusha and Kai backtracked from where they had first begun the hunt for the bladebreakers. Sprinting around in absolute darkness was one drawback, and having an indecisive personality like hers that never stuck on her first thought was just another hassle to deal with. It was strange how Kai hadn't given up on her and parted ways halfway through the halls because she was pretty sure that she had taken more than a handful of wrong turns.
"I trusted the wrong person here," Kai said, after like the millionth dead-end.
"Trusted? You just followed me. You're no less of a bother yourself, Hiwatari." Katyusha said, wondering if this was the only reason he had stayed low about her impossible amount of errors. He wouldn't have won in this battle of wits. Talk about incompetence.
"You were the one who swore to protect me, not the other way around."
She turned back to the dude, "Correct. So stop following me and join the others. I'll find my way out soon enough. And this is me protecting you and giving you commands for your good."
Without even a single glance in her direction, he brushed past her into the junction in front of them.
This place was planned out of the most intricate maze design structures ever. Each wall stood at an exact level, with no indication of life. And if there is life, the Psykicks have gone bat, upside down from the ceiling. But from all she could sense, the energy change was only around her and Kai.
Ignoring the tension rising between them, Katyusha took an abrupt turn to her left, leaving him to trail behind her. Surprisingly, she seemed to have taken the right turn by chance, for a double door rolled into her eyesight. Looking at her partner for confirmation, Katyusha took off, throwing the doors open.
She instantly wished that one of those flash warnings were placed behind the doors because this light might as well have blinded her with the intensity of it. The familiar blend of purple, blue and green flashed in front of her. It reminded her of the light which came out of her.
"Looks like you burned in this room before," Kai whispered in her ears.
Katyusha snickered in response. "I thought the same."
He looked away, a frown spreading across his face, "I'd rather not have the same idea as yours."
Katyusha had been looking closely at the room. It was pretty identical to the room she had been trapped in. But the work done inside was rather suggestively different. Where it had been dreadfully empty in the former room, this one was packed with rows and rows of empty tanks. They reminded her of the ones in Max's mom's office. The glass was clear, appearing bare from outside. Below that, she noticed a column of systems that looked more like the control system of the tanks attached above them.
Kai left her side, eyes fixed on the empty tank standing over him. The illuminating light made his pale skin stand out even more. The triangles around his cheeks glimmered as if they were under the moonlight. His face twisted in concentration, just being his beautiful form of humanness. If she had been the director of a movie, the audience would have given up any hopes for the plot formation, judging by the number of times she had the same thought over and over again. But she forcefully stopped her mind halfway, the bit-beasts were essential, even in her love story.
"Katyusha?" Kai called. Nice.
"Hmm? What happened?" She came close by.
Katyusha thought she hadn't been capable to view the tank clearly because of the distance. But it seemed her eyes hadn't played tricks on her. The inside of the tank looked like a cloud formation. The cloud before a storm, the storm before a rain. The misty look behind the glass wall of the tank released the anxiety she had pushed inside herself. Before it could take over her, she turned away from it. Kai stood, still staring at it.
"Find something of worth?"
"Katyusha, you said that you saw the bit-beasts?"
"Yeah, I saw it with my own eyes."
"And this is the room where bit-beasts are trapped?"
"I never said that…wait-" That's when she noticed the door, almost hidden behind the last row of tanks. Katyusha rushed towards it, practically falling over the harsh divider between the tiles. Talk about comfort. But again, she doubted this place was made to run around.
Reaching the door, she spun around to see it the way she had glimpsed it earlier, with Ray by her side. The brightness, the light play of the rays of blue and green peeking out from behind the tanks, she could have said without fail that this had been the room. But still, it didn't explain how Kai knew about Ray and Katyusha being in this room. She was sure there were a good amount of similar rooms across the control system the Psykicks had built for themselves. She spied for any clues which could have given away their previous location to her mate, but with the period they got to stay in this area, she doubted she even had enough time for blood to slip out of her wounds.
She looked up to see Kai still. This guy surely had his natural-born skills, some even better than hers.
Jogging back to him, she said, "It's the same room. I have zero ideas about how you know the whereabouts of this room, aside from the fact that I told you about me wanting to collect bit-beasts back from here."
"'Collecting'? If I remember it better, it was phrased as 'stealing'" he countered back honestly.
She rolled her eyes. "It ain't the time for you to applaud your memory skill. Or mine for what matters. But again, I am trying not to be more curious than I already am. It will be of no good."
"I saw you in the control system of this place. There r cameras around if you haven't figured it out yet."
"Just how long had you been in that control room of yours?" Katyusha continued to question him, knowing just well it would end in no good. Curiosity killed the cat.
But satisfaction bought it back.
"Not long enough to see what they have done in this room. I just saw your hair before your and Ray's face was blocked behind that door of this room," he countered smoothly.
Kai had started to move around the tanks. Katyusha took a detour and began from the systems around the tanks. The system was just the same kind of jumble for her as Kai had always been. Simply looking around wouldn't do anything.
"Kai," she called out. Her sound bounced off of everything in the room, making it ten times sharper than she sounded. "What if I try something?"
Without a reply, she found herself aiming for the buttons on the board. She didn't know what would have been a better outcome: her trying or not trying, but she had to do something. And the design made no sense to her either way. As far as she was concerned about her safety, it wouldn't have been a bad idea, for she doubted this control system was linked to the construction as a whole. Or so she hoped.
"Kai I might do something unthinkable-" she started when a crash stopped her right in her tracks. She twisted to see Kai's hand pressed against the same button she had been planning to hit on her system.
"KAI!" she cried out as she saw the smoke turning into something more evident. Out of the container, rose the clarity she had been looking for. The giant scales of the body grew as she saw in a paralyzed state from outside the glass. The beast took a form she had known and grown up learning. For once, the events had taken a turn even Kai hadn't expected. His eyes glossed the same way. She could have sworn that if she had seen herself in the mirror at that exact moment, the pure form of instability in Kai would clone her own.
"The bit-beasts."
Q brain is asking: Does the title of the chapter make any contextual sense?
A: Nope.
Q: then why?
A: Because the song is a banger and needs to be promoted even more than it has been.
(Go listen to 'Same dream, Same night, Same mind' by Seventeen because that song was the only thing that gave me the courage to go through the past few months.)
And for the late update, I am very sorry. I was very extremely busy with school for the last two months straight. Thankfully due to the pre-written chapter for September month, I could upload a new story but October and November had been just hard. Probably even the hardest time I ever had. So the story was like the last time I could possibly worry about it. Sorry for making everyone wait for so long but I needed to catch a break before I actually do the story, for this cant be done wrong. This is the only thing which could only be done by me and while writing, I hope i don't have to face any kind of expectations for the same. I am regretful I have disappointed you if you had placed an expectation on me. But understanding my statement in this story is also very important. I will give this story the most amount of care it deserves and it wouldn't be done without a bit of patience from all sides in making it. For that, I ask for forgiveness and time. I still can't promise how fast the other chapters be done but I can promise that the next chapter would be coming soon for I have already partially written it already. And it would be a very interesting chapter indeed. Something even I'm looking forward to finishing.
