A/N: I got bored and have spare time so started the 2nd chapter. Hope you enjoy. I have skipped the 1st day back bits to get on with the storyline.
Shay sighed as she closed her locker after a busy 1st shift back. It had gone well and without much of a hitch. Shay and Brett worked well as a team and got into a routine pretty quickly.
Tonight Shay was meeting Gabby and Brett at Molly's before they go out fully in town.
Gabby had already gone home due to 61 having to drop the patient off. Brett was much quicker getting ready so Shay was the last one to leave her shift as she makes her way out to her car, bag in tow.
It only took her 20 minutes to get home as she parked her car up outside the apartment, locking it behind her as she heads inside. Severide was already at home as Shay entered through the main door.
"Hey" Shay smiled to Severide as she entered the living room.
"Hey" Severide said as he looked up from his phone "Do you have any plans tonight? I was thinking we could have a drink or something and catch up.
Shay had walked over to the sofa and placed her bag down while having the conversation with Severide "No sorry I already have plans. I'm meeting Dawson and Brett later for drinks and having a girls night out. Maybe another night?"
Severide smiled "Oh do I see someone trying to bring someone home tonight?" he soon changed subject when Shay threw a ice cube at him from the freezer as she was making a drink "oi that's cold and fine yes another night" Severide chuckled.
Shay sipped on her drink as she looked at him "well maybe you shouldn't of been so cheeky" Shay chuckles. "I'm going to nip in the shower and go and get my outfit sorted so shout me if you need me"
Shay didn't wait for a reply before she made her way up the stairs to her bedroom.
She went over to her wardrobe and picked out her favourite jeans, a pink and white blouse and a smart jacket as well as some sensible shoes. With her outfit sorted she climbed into the shower, making sure she used her shower gel, shampoo and conditioner well due to work that shift.
As she let the soap rinse off her eyes closed as her mind drifted to what Gabby could be wearing tonight. She got slightly turned on at the thought of what she could be hiding behind what Shay would see on arrival and what it would be like to kiss her lips.
She's my straight friend. What am I thinking? We're going on a girl's night and all I can think about is bedding her. Shay thought as she turned the shower off, getting out of it as she wrapped a towel around her hair and one round the rest of her body.
Once back in her bedroom she sat in front of her mirror as she began to dry her hair. She sighed as she looked at the scar on her head where the surgeons had patched her back up. She hated looking at it so got to work drying her hair before slipping on a t-shirt and her pyjama pants so she didn't have to get her night outfit dirty.
She walked back downstairs to Severide who was looking over some take-away menus.
"Can't you decide what to eat? You know take-aways aren't healthy right?" Shay spoke as she perched beside Severide on the couch.
"No, I don't know what to have. I guess your eating here first?" As Shay nodded her head, Kelly passed her one of the menus over. Severide ignored her unhealthy comment as he knew not to argue at that.
"I'd like a cheese and ham pizza please and chips" Shay said after scanning through.
Shay and Severide sat talking as they eat their pizza once it had arrival.
Shay was meeting the ladies at Molly's at 7pm and Shay finished her pizza at 6pm. She got up and headed upstairs to get ready.
She got herself dressed before sitting at her dresser as she did her make-up and hair.
She was fully ready by 6:35pm as she heads downstairs, getting a wolf whistle from Severide as she reached the bottom of the stairs. Shay slides her charger, phone and purse into her bag as she listened to Severide make the comment that if she was straight, he would hook up with her right away.
Severide offers to take Shay to Molly's as they make there way to the car, locking the apartment up on the way out.
They arrive at Molly's by 6:50pm as they park up and make there way into Molly's. Shay made her way over Gabby as Severide had made his way over to Casey.
"Hey Gabby" Shay smiled as she eyes Gabby up and down. Gabby had a simple blue dress on underneath a cardigan to keep her warm and looked like some uncomfortable high heels.
"Hey Shay. I'm off duty from 7pm So I'll be ready for our night out" Gabby replied as she walked over, grabbing a small glass of Shay's usual drink as they waited for a Brett to arrive.
"Great. Can't wait for a great evening with you both. It's the first time I have come out fully since the incident you know so it will be great." Shay smiled.
"Well, we will make sure you have a great but safe night. If you feel funny at anytime let me or Brett know ok" Gabby worriedly spoke.
As Shay nodded her head at Gabby's worried comment and Shay held her hand, Gabby's mind drifted back to when she first saw Shay.
START OF FLASHBACK
Gabby walked into the room where Shay was stopping in ICU and at the site of her best friend, she burst out crying.
She had been told by her doctor that Shay had a bad head injury due to the beam falling on her and they didn't know if she would ever wake up and how much she would remember.
Gabby and the rest of the crew aside from Mills had been given the all clear aside from a few cuts and bruises. Mills had broken his leg but was on the mend.
Gabby walked over to Shay's side, sitting on one of the chairs as she took one of her friends' hands.
Shay was on a ventilator that was breathing for her, tubes and wires connected all over as well as a big bandage over her head where they had operated.
Shay was going to be in a coma until they felt her brain had recovered enough.
"I'm so sorry Shay. I shouldn't have swapped places. I'm the reason your in here rather than me." Gabby sobbed as she cried in the chair.
Gabby spent the next 6 weeks stuck to Shay's side. Severide and the rest of 51 popped in every so often, Severide being more frequent than the rest. Gabby only left Shay's side for toilet breaks and to go and get food, drink or a shower. She was forced home by the chief one day to get some rest which didn't last very long.
Gabby was happy when the doctor agreed to take Shay off the ventilator. Gabby was soon back by Shay's side as they started to bring her round. It was a good hour before Shay began to stir from her coma.
"Where...where am I?" Shay spoke very quietly before coughing due to how dry her throat was.
Gabby was quick to react, getting a cup of water sorted with a straw, letting Shay drink from it as she replied "Hey sleepy head. Your in Chicago Med."
Shay finished her drink before letting the straw go. She could barely move so was glad for Gabby's assistance "Thank you" Shay smiled. "sorry I'm not sure of your name but I recognise you from somewhere and I remember your voice."
The relief in Gabby's face as Shay recognised her, even if it wasn't by name, confused Shay a bit but she guessed it was related to why she was in the hospital bed.
As the doctor came round to check on his patient, he smiled as he went through some of checks.
"Ok well we have some good and some bad news. It's great to see that you recognised your friend here, meaning there is still some function left. You will have a lot of questions I'm sure but these will be answered over time. I would suggest your friends coming in 1 or 2 at a time and getting to know them at your pace ok" as Gabby and Shay nodded he continued "Due to being in a coma and limited movement you will be on physical therapy to get you back up and moving as well as speech therapy to help you bring up to speed where you was. I'll be honest this won't be a quick fix and you won't be at work for at least another 6 months. But if you so well I can't see why you can't head home in a week or 2 time." The doctor smiled and asked if they had any questions.
When the girls said no and thank you, he left the room so the girls could catch up.
It was exactly a week after Shay woke up that she was discharged. She still had to go in for therapy but she was allowed to go home. Severide and Gabby had adjusted the apartment so Shay stayed downstairs as she was relying on a wheelchair for now. Gabby was stopping over to help look after Shay due to Severide was back at work. Shay was now able to sit on her own and move from wheelchair to the sofa or bed. She was also able to take a couple of steps. Aside from that most of her big movements was very minimal. Shay had been fully caught up to date with Severide, Chief Boden and Gabby only at this point to help aid her recovery.
As Shay sat on the sofa with Gabby by her side, she knew she was lucky to be alive even though she doesn't know what happened on that vital day.
END OF FLASHBACK
Gabby still worried about her friend even though Shay was a lot better now. At 6:59pm Gabby clocked off just as Brett entered Molly's. Gabby walked round to the other side of the bar to meet Shay as Brett walked over to them.
"Hey you girls look lovely. We ready to go?" Brett greeted her friends as she walked over.
"Hi and thank you." Shay replied.
"Hey Sylvie and thank you. Yes, we're ready to go. You look lovely too." Gabby spoke as they all get ready and head out to the taxi that was waiting for them outside.
As they climbed into the cab, Shay and Gabby sat next to each other, staring into each others eyes a moment.
Gabby blinked out of it as her phone went off to say she had a message 'Hey Babe. Hope work was ok. Enjoy your girly night out and see you tomorrow. Love you. Matt' Gabby's message read from Matt.
'Hey. Work was great thanks. Heading to town now, speak to you tomorrow. Love you too. Gabby' Gabby replied before putting her phone away for the night.
A: Finishing Chapter 2 there. Next chapter will be the girl's night out. There will be more Shay/Dawson closeness in the next episode as well as more Brett.
