A/N: Thanks for the kudos and comments. I'm enjoying writing this for you to read. So enjoy chapter 5.
The person climbed on board of the ambulance, closing the door behind them.
"Brett, me and Shay...we are kind of in a relationship" Gabby managed to speak out to the other paramedic. "Thought you was grabbing a drink?"
Brett looked between the 2 women as they sat down normally now on the seats "Otis said Shay was doing inventory and I came out to help. Sorry I thought you was in a relationship with Matthew Casey?" Brett was confused what was going on.
Gabby looked at Shay then back at Brett "Yeah I still am and I love him. But me and Shay have something special that I can't explain. If your going to tell Casey then I'll go and tell him now." Gabby looked down as she was getting upset.
Sylvie watched as Shay pulled the ex paramedic into her arms, holding her close as Gabby tried not to cry. "Look I won't say anything but you guys need to be careful." Sylvie smiled softly.
Gabby relaxed a little bit. The 3 of them finish the inventory just before the alarm calls for a job. Gabby quickly jumps out the ambulance and got into her truck 81 gear as the 2 paramedics closed the back doors and climbed in the cab.
On scene Shay had to watch Gabby and Casey work close together as they attempt to find people in the fire. Luckily everyone came out the fire ok as Shay and Sylvie head there patient to Chicago Med.
"You really do love her don't you?" Brett spoke once they had dropped there patient off and was heading back to 51.
Shay glanced over before looking back to the road as she was driving "I have loved her longer than anyone can imagine. We have always been close since we was partners and best friends so it's hard to say when lines developed into one."
Brett nodded her head "Bet it's hard seeing her not on Ambo 61 after so many years together. I know I would struggle if it was me."
Shay sighed a little "Yeah it does a bit. When she first went for the test I was happy and supportive. I had a new partner that for a while I didn't really get on with. So that made it hard for me. We did eventually get along but she got suspended. It hit me hard but was relieved to hear Gabby was returning to ambo. Although you could tell Gabby wanted to be a firefighter we got back into routine quite easily. It hit me the hardest when Gabby's 2nd test was coming up. I couldn't see me working as a paramedic without her as she wouldn't even be training at 51. I was happy when she passed as we went along with our last shifts together. Gabby was trying to let me lead the last call before..." Shay began to cry. She was glad they were now back at 51 and parked up as she couldn't hold it in as she remembered the incident.
Brett picked up the last bit on her own as she quickly unbelted herself and pulled Shay into a hug. "Hey you're ok. I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you." Brett felt guilty now.
Shay soon pulled away from Brett's arms, smiling a little bit "It's not your fault. You didn't expect me to go through it all. I'm proud of Dawson, I just miss her you know."
Shay and Brett climb out the ambulance and headed inside the common area. Gabby looked over worried as she saw Shay had been crying.
"Hey, everything ok?" Severide spoke up as he also saw his roommate had been crying.
"Yeah I'm fine. Dawson can I talk to you for a minute please" Shay spoke and walked with Gabby to the bunk room that was empty.
Brett got herself a drink and explained to Severide that there was nothing they could do to help.
Back in the bunk room, Shay sat down on her bunk with Gabby sitting next to her.
"Everything ok?" Gabby asked as she was being cautious as wasn't sure when Severide and Casey would head back to there office as she stroked Shay's knee.
"I'm fine. Just Brett had asked how close we are and it made me remember everything including the incident. I still don't know how I'm coping ambo without you Gabby but I am so proud of you. You worked hard to become a fire fighter. I don't know whether I can go on much longer without you. Will you ever think about coming back to ambo 61?" Shay looked Gabby in the eye. She was enjoying work but it didn't feel the same. Brett was a great partner but she missed working with Gabby.
Gabby listened carefully to Shay, taking it all in. "Shay 1st off; don't blame yourself for what happened in that explosion. You did nothing wrong. 2nd thing is I have to complete my candidacy before I really can think about anything more. You may have me on some shifts as Mills did last year as a candidate and qualified EMT. I need to see this year out as a candidate. Once I'm qualified I can them work on Truck or Ambulance but I'll need to make the decision near the time. I know you miss me and I'll always be here for you and if you need advice I'll always be here as a EMT to give you advice. Brett is a good paramedic and you 2 will do well together." Gabby could see Shay was struggling without her but Brett was a fantastic paramedic.
Casey spoiled the conversation as he called all 81 out for a errand meaning Gabby had to go.
"Go, I'll be fine" Shay said to Gabby who had looked at her to make sure she would be ok. As she watched Gabby follow Casey out to the apparatus room, Shay sighed and put her head in her hands.
Severide had come over and asked if she was ok. Shay shrugged it off and said she just being silly.
The rest of the day flowed well. They were all kept busy. By 8pm it had all quietened down and they finally managed to all sit down and eat.
Shay was sat on a table with Brett and Gabby. Brett was chatting away about her days off, Shay only half listening as she looked at Gabby who looked distracted.
Gabby could hear Brett talking and only half of it was staying in her brain. Her conversation with Shay in the bunk room was going through her mind. She knew it must of taken a lot for Shay to ask her to re consider being a firefighter and to head back to being a paramedic.
She guessed it would of been easier if she worked at a different firehouse in some ways but that was out of Gabby's hands and she was happy to be working with the team she knew and loved as a 2nd family.
Once she was done eating she went to Chief Bowden's office and knocked. On being beckoned in Gabby walked in and decided to just say before she backed out.
"Hi Chief. Just want to let you know if your ever short a medic or if Brett needs to transfer for a shift or so I'm happy and ready to step into EMT." Gabby spoke before letting Boden speak.
"Of course. You will be the 1st to know. Is everything ok? You having 2nd thoughts about becoming a firefighter?" Unlike most Chiefs, Boden cared about his staff and would do everything he can to make sure there happy. That's why he was respected by all the staff.
"Yeah of course everything is ok. No I'm not having 2nd thoughts. Just was thinking about how much it would affect Shay or Brett if a different paramedic had to take over. Rafferty is fair enough but I'm quick access and on the same shift so can be swapped over." Gabby told him. It was half true anyway but she would never put Shay in a position of being questioned about mentally coming back to work.
Boden nodded his head and wrote a note before letting Gabby go back out to the rest for dessert. Mills had cooked tonight to give Gabby a break as she had helped him out when he was candidate.
As Gabby re-joined the girls, her mind still was in a muddle as she tried to join the conversation.
