Third Face of Reality

The first is old and settled. He bears his years like a trophy and issues his commands like law.

The rumors say that he has been there since the beginning. Some would say this is unreasonable, even impossible, but he has never refuted the possibility, even when asked.

He hobbles about on slow, uncertain feet, when he chooses to walk at all, but no one will argue that the Order is unquestionably his. He is the shaper, the crafter, and it is from him that all the others receive their authority.

He is considered wise, if wisdom lies in permanence.

The second is deceptively simple, a homespun man, calm, collected, dependable. They call him the backbone of the Order. His elders admire him, and the younglings idolize him. He is the epitome of a Jedi: remote, cool, dispassionate. He carries about him an air of stability, tradition.

There is a rumor among the younger knights that he cannot be killed.

He pays no heed to this rumor. He has never been one for vanity. He knows only his duty: to protect, to defend, to conserve.

He is the force that holds them all together, if only for a little while.

The third is rash, wild, unpredictable. He lives too fast, reflects too little, wants too much. He thinks nothing of risks, and has the scars to show for it.

The others are wary of him. He fits no molds, and they don't quite know what to do with him. He despises permanence, has no appreciation for tradition. He has always longed for something he cannot even name.

The rumors say that he will change everything.

He is the niggling feeling that permanence never lasts, that traditions change and stability is an illusion.

He is destruction, and the renewal that follows.

Inspired by the Hindu idea of the threefold nature of reality: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). Each is a necessary part of the cycle of life.

E-brownies to anyone who can guess the identity of the three persons in these drabbles. It shouldn't be too hard…
