Takes place during Season 5 of Supernatural and towards the beginning of Blue Exorcist

Chapter 3

"All that from some holy water? Seriously." Dean scoffed at the unconscious teen.

"Well he did say he had been fighting a demon with Yukio and he looked tired before. Maybe this was just the last straw," Sam reasoned. "We should probably check on Yukio. If he's awake we could ask him what happened."

"Or more likely we'll find that we've been helping a pair of demon brothers all along." After a moment Dean sighed. "Alright, let's just secure this one first."

After taking another bottle, Dean cuffed and hauled Rin's limp figure into the trunk of the Impala, the lid locking with a satisfying groan. Now armed, Dean was satisfied and the Winchesters made their way to Yukio's room. As luck would have it, he was already sitting up in bed. A doctor walked out of his room and almost bumped into Dean.

"Oh, you're the ones who brought this young man in, right?"

"Yeah Doc, how's he doing?" Dean stepped back to lean against the wall, arms crossed.

"Thank goodness it was just a scratch on his leg. It was deep but he is in no danger. He has a few other small abrasions on his arms and face but again, nothing too serious. He experienced a trauma recently and combined with the blood loss it caused him to lose consciousness. We've already replenished his blood and given him an IV but we're going to keep him overnight for observation. He should be able to check out tomorrow morning."

"Thank you, Doctor." Sam smiled politely. While the man walked away, the two hunters entered the room. Now clean of blood, the patient wore the standard blue hospital gown, part of it bulging where a thick bandage covered his thigh. The only other thing Yukio had were the black frames resting comfortably on his nose (although Sam could've sworn they were broken earlier. Maybe he goes everywhere with a spare pair?) The teen turned with a neutral expression.

"Are you the ones who found me?"

"Yeah," was all Dean answered and just as abruptly Yukio's face was suddenly dripping from the contents of the hunter's bottle. Yukio spluttered but the Winchesters realized it wasn't causing him pain. Dean pouted with disappointment as Sam continued.

"There was another boy when we found you. He claims to be your brother but we think he's being possessed."

Instead of looking shocked or even relieved, Yukio's eyes widened in terror.

"Did you pour holy water on him too?"

Sam took a step back. This was more than fear. Yukio was downright petrified. But besides that, how had Yukio known they had used holy water? Dean seemed to miss that small detail.

"Better," Dean smirked. "We got him to drink it."

Yukio clenched his fists.

"Where is he?! Take me to him, now!"

Yukio stood from his bed, ignoring the pain from his recent injury as he grabbed his trench coat from the nearby chair. Sam realized they must have missed something. He fumbled while bringing Yukio a pair of crutches due to his own plastered hand while Dean protested. When Yukio was set, Sam led the panicked teen through the hospital doors.

Once outside Yukio tried to move faster, hobbling terribly like a drunkard. Dean unlocked the trunk of his Baby as they approached. At this point he was curious to see what would happen in spite of his misgivings. Yukio opened the lid and pulled Rin's arm until both boys fell in a heap on the asphalt. Sam noticed Rin's face had taken on an even more ghostly pallor. But that made no sense; holy water didn't make demons sick, did it?

"Dammit," Yukio cursed as he turned his limp brother onto his side. Despite the harsh movement Rin moved without protest, not even groaning in response. Even Dean realized something was off.

"I'm sorry, brother," Yukio muttered before shoving his fingers down Rin's throat. It took a few moments before Rin's eyes flew open and he turned himself onto his stomach to empty his insides of the spiritual liquid, vomiting only burning his throat for the second time that night. Rin squeezed his eyes shut and while taking slow breaths. It took longer to sit up, especially once discovering his hands bound behind his back. When the ringing in his ears lessoned to a low hum he heard his younger brother scolding the older men.

"What were you thinking? You could've killed him!" Rin made a pathetic attempt to elbow his brother to stop his rant.

"They didn't know any better, they thought I was possessed." His voice sounded like grinding his throat against sandpaper would have been a mercy. "Besides, they're not exorcists. They're hunters."

"We didn't know holy water would kill your brother," Sam tried to explain.

"Normally it wouldn't go so far as to kill him but I'm assuming," Yukio now directed his glare toward his irresponsible older brother, "you're injured which is why it's affecting you this bad." Rin tried to chuckle but only succeeded in releasing a breathy wheeze.

"Heh, you got me. I was hoping it would heal before you noticed."

Rin lifted his shirt to reveal a stab wound in his stomach that seemed to be semi-healed. It had been so covered in blood no one had noticed his shirt was even torn as it just matched the rest of his stained outfit.

"You idiot!" Yukio slapped his brother upside the head but instead of complaining Rin stayed down, his body shivering from the freezing winter temperature. He didn't pass out but he was thoroughly dazed.

"I think he hurt his head too," Dean muttered.

"Dammit," Yukio breathed as he examined his brother's blood-soaked head. He turned to the hunters.

"I know you have a lot of questions but right now I need you to listen to me." The Winchesters only nodded. "I need to clean up his wounds otherwise they'll become even more infected. Can you get supplies from the hospital or do you have a safe house with medical equipment I could use?" Yukio had gone from concerned brother to battle strategist.

"Why can't we exorcise him and let the hospital treat him?" Sam asked. Yukio sighed as he used his crutches to stand up.

"You assume he's possessed. Why can't you accept that he himself is the demon, body and all?" Yukio explained like it was the most obvious answer in the world.

"I don't know how much you think you know about the world of the supernatural, kid," Dean was irritated, "but demons don't have physical bodies. The only way they can be in this world is through possession of a living human." Yukio pinched the bridge of his nose with his free hand.

"I already told you that I need to help Rin as soon as possible and I will answer your questions later. Instead you seem happy to distract me and add to the headache I already have."

Rin started coming back to his senses and sat up slowly with a pained moan.

"It's not like I'm dying or anything Yukio," Rin joked before starting to cough. The crimson fluid that escaped his lips begged to differ from what he tried to have them to believe. Sam broke the silence that followed.

"I'll get the supplies from the hospital and Dean will make sure Rin is secure. We'll take you to where we're staying."

Yukio used whatever scraps the Winchesters had in their car as bandages for Rin's side and head. Dean made sure Rin's wrists were secured behind his back with the demon cuffs before allowing him to sit in his Baby. Rin didn't bother telling him how weak the cuff's curse was on him. Rin was sure that even now in his weakened state it would've been easy for him to burn them off.

As soon as Sam came back with whatever supplies he managed to procure from the hospital, Dean sped off to their motel room. The older hunter sighed. Maybe they'd actually make it back this time.

They travelled in silence with the exception of Yukio's low hissing whenever his leg was jostled too much or Rin's small cries at sharp turns that caused his insides to burn. With his arms bound behind his back he couldn't secure his wounded side. The most he could manage was to lean forward, making himself as small as possible. As they neared the end of the ride, Rin kept his eyes shut tight to stop himself from crying out. His insides felt like they were melting and his tail was not happy about being sat on for such a long period of time.

"We're here," Dean announced gruffly.

Rin didn't want to move. He only opened his eyes when he heard his own door open.

"C'mon your highness. We don't have all day," Dean muttered.

"Don't call me that," Rin flinched in response.

Rin pulled himself up, his vision swimming for a moment. Once he gained a semblance of balance Rin continued forward, frowning as he went. Dean and Sam had lost all the kindness their voices held for him since he drank the cursed, or rather the 'purified' water.

'Yeah, anyone would act this way if they ever find out about me,' Rin's shoulders slouched even more with the thought.

Dean marched him inside the decrepit motel room while Sam tried to help Yukio limp in behind them. Dean turned one of the wooden chairs around to face them and pushed Rin into it with the intention to secure him there while Yukio patched him up. Instead of complying like he previously had, Rin yelled and jumped out of the chair, landing on the floor in a painful heap.

"Rin!" Yukio dropped his crutches and hobbled toward his brother, "What happened?" Yukio saw where his brother's hands attempted to reach.

"Your tail?" Yukio spoke softly. Rin only nodded, his eyes were screwed closed and his mouth clenched shut to stop himself from hurting his throat more by yelling. Rin had landed wrong which sent an agonizing wave of pain up his spine and aggravated his burning insides.

"I'm sorry, did you say tail?" Sam asked bewildered. Yukio smiled sadly.

"Well, now they know Rin. You can let it out. Just let me see it."

Slowly a dark, thin appendage slipped out from Rin's battered pants. Sam could only describe it as graceful despite the blood-soaked clumps of hair and recent bald spots. As it moved, Rin's eyes were squeezed even tighter. Whether from pain or from preventing himself from seeing the hunters' reaction, Sam couldn't tell.

Even with the current situation, Sam couldn't help but breathe an awed, "Wow." It was soft enough that no human should have been able to hear but Rin had demon ears. His eyes opened suddenly as he looked at Sam in shock.

"You really think so?" Rin's eyes shined and he let loose a small smile.

The moment passed very quickly. As soon as Rin's eyes met Sam's they rolled up into his head which fell limply to the ground along with his tail. Yukio quickly checked his pulse.

"His pulse is too fast. I don't know if I'll be able to treat him in time."

Yukio had become strangely calm despite the situation. It wasn't from a lack of care though, Sam realized the only way the boy could function was if he completely removed his emotions from the situation, even if it was his brother dying. It was still unnerving to watch.

Dean kneeled close to Rin's head and checked his pulse too.

"Son of a - CAS!"

"What are you doing?" Yukio asked calmly. Sam winced. It was so unnatural for someone to be so composed while their family was dying a few feet away from them.

"I still need to get answers from this kid and I can't do that if he's dead."

"You called?"
