Her eyes opened...
No one in Hell knew she was here - No one in Hell will go near the door. Unlike all the other doors, her's is wide open. She can see the walkways and Demons that pass by, or rather used to pass by. She has been here longer than she cares to remember.
Her room is a grey/white, rare is the time she will allow a memory to enter the room, save for the Baby Grand Piano that is just out of her reach. Her only torture, her only real pain. She cannot reach it to play it, she cannot shine without it, her eyes will not glow. The pain helps her to remember she is alive, she is not a soul that is dammed, she was banished here. Her wings are spread open, they always have been, but they are nailed to the wall in several places. Her hands and wrists bound, feet and waist chained to the floor. Another torture of her own making and she cannot fathom why. Has no idea why she is considered a monster, but that is what she remembers being called.
Her mother, skin of a radiant golden brown, eyes like a wheat field in the bright sunshine, was the most attractive creature the world had ever seen. She was sent to Earth for one reason, to locate Lucifer. Wearing nothing more than a simple soft, long sheer dress that just covered her body. Lucifer had, as is his want, left Hell for a tryst to sate his appetite. The garden she was in had lovely flora and fauna, though the local people seemed primitive to her, she knew he was here and needed to merely wait. The air was crisp, the night sky clear and he appeared walking slowly toward her. His usual charm was about him, but he didn't need it for her. Though thinking her just a mortal, he tried anyway and she played along. What followed after she wished she didn't know, but cannot forget. She never forgets what she sees or hears. It is a curse.
Born with the gift of those memories recorded, her ability to peer into others minds with a single touch, throw their thoughts back at them and manipulation of light, she knows the origins of her creation. She knows the memories of both her mother and father. Permanently attached to both their minds forever. She has seen and felt all of it.
However, on the day of her birth, the All-Father had her mother destroyed. No further memories or information would come from her. He simply erased her. That was the first true pain she felt and her first memory of hate. Then came Love, Passion, Desire. Her father still existed. She clung to these images and these feelings, even though he had a dark side to him, a very frightening dark side. He could pull the guilt and pain out of people. He also felt rejected, unwanted, angry. She understood this feeling as well. She could hear his voice, feel his presence, even from this far away. Every time he played his piano, her wings would flutter and shine, her eyes would light up. It was a feeling she cherished. He did not know she was created, or why. She could not reach him. She did not understand why he couldn't see her thoughts. It was very early on that she decided to be like him, learn from him everything she could, so she could be closer to him.
After she was brought to the place she called home for a few years, she realized she was always alone. The All-Father was the only one that ever saw her and it wasn't often, moreover, no one else ever came to visit. It wasn't until much later she understood that no one else knew she existed. The All-Father intentionally kept her hidden. Treated her like something shameful, less-than the others. She knew there were others, she saw the images in her Father's memories. There were many, and she learned their names as he spoke of them or remembered them. She did not know them all. They also, could not hear her thoughts. The only reason that the All-Father would not destroy her was simply because she was part of Lucifer. She was his daughter.
It wasn't until after she began to question why the others did not come to see her, or that Father did not know her, that the All-Father sent her here. Even though her father was here, the All-Father made sure that he wouldn't see her. Though the door was open, she never saw him walk down the hall. The Demons were now petrified of her. Even with her begging to see him, he never came. After the first millennium she stopped yelling for him. Knowing he would never hear her cries, never come to see her.
She had been here so long she now had no idea how to let herself out of her bonds. She would never be able to escape, not without his help. She had become too weak. Even though he could make her wings shine, there was too much distance between them to gain enough power.
She clung to his mind, watching, listening, learning and hoping for an answer. Then Father found out the truth about Chloe. The Goddess told him. She did not like the Goddess, she was mean to her father. The images of his heartbreak flooded her with emotions. She realized the All-Father did it again. This time it was a creation for her father. A creation that was mortal, different. The All-Father was doing it again. She needed to pay close attention, be vigilant.
Father made the Goddess go away. He yelled at her, she caused him pain.
She watched her Father and Chloe, this dance they did. She was frightened when her father would bleed. It enraged her and made her cry. She began to have a hatred for the All-Father she didn't know she was capable of. It made her heart break to see her father hurt like that, but she could feel he would have done it over and over just for Chloe. He was feeling Love, real Love. He did not have that with her mother. They had a simple trist, a one night stand, a woman thrown in her father's path by intention with understanding of her father's proclivities. The difference between Chloe and her mother was that her mother was a celestial, and not of His universe.
She has seen her Father die - several times for Chloe, felt his pain and felt the love. He cared for her like no other. More than he cared for his own self at times. Chloe was his everything. Hanging by her painfully torn wings, she began to feel like she would always be nothing to him. Never known and never loved and it crushed her very soul. She hoped her light would just give out, her memories stop and her existence end. She couldn't stop his thoughts from flooding in, his love was intoxicating. It was keeping her alive, regardless of her pain in feeling it.
She understood that she was simply created as a tool The All-Father could eventually use to manipulate her father. It started to break her will. He would never know her, never see her and never know she loved him. She did not blame him for anything that has happened. She would like to know him, not just as a Father, but as a friend.
All she could do is hang on to his thoughts, only removing herself when her Father would be in a personal situation with his many lovers, or as it seems now, just Chloe. That felt like an invasion, perverse even. The piano was her escape, every note he played made her wings shine brighter - all she wanted was to sit by his side and play with him. Show him that she too, could play as beautifully. She learned through his mind.
Her thoughts turned to the piano in front of her, out of reach and untouched. She began to cry, every tear falling, another diamond on the floor, millions of them already scattered around at her feet. She is more powerful than Father, yet feels so weak knowing freedom will never come.
Amenadiel, her Father's older brother had fallen. His wings were gone, abilities gone. He tried to hurt Father - Did he think he was helping? How could the All-Father allow this? This cannot be, he has a child with a mortal? The child is a Nephilim, but he's so small - yet he is allowed to stay with Amenadiel. 'Why was I not allowed to stay with my Father? Why was I banished? Why was I taken?'
She felt like she had been here for eons in this state of pain, she knows she will never be free.
What? A thunderclap and lightening - in Hell? She felt somewhat ill, this feeling was new. Someone is sitting on Father's throne! A feeling came over her - anger and rage, yet searching for this person she found that this mind is somewhat familiar. She could almost see into it, this woman is like Father. The mortal woman, Chloe, is still alive, it was not her. She cannot see Chloe's thoughts. Something is wrong, this woman, she is young, very, very young, her mind makes no sense. It's all over the place. 'Why is she so mad at Father? Furious. She wants to harm him, blame him. Kill him!' The thought raced through her mind.
Her mind went out to Lucifer, he was with Chloe, he is fine. This woman though - gone. She is not in Hell anymore. She cannot feel or see her anymore. She began to search for it, but the images would not come.
The images through her father's eyes now came to her in a flash. This woman had father by the throat! Her face, her wings! They are - weapons, yet not. Between Father's confusion and disbelief the pain exploded. Another Nephilim - Father has another child! Why did she not see any of this? How could Father not know? This one is also free. She began to feel something new. Fury was coming. Her eyes glared a bright red/gold. She had to get out, she had to tell him she existed. She wanted to see him too.
She began to fight against her bonds, trying to pull away from the wall, the pain was unbearable, but she would not stop. She was weak, but drew upon her love for her Father. Her right wing tore from from the wall followed by the left, she screamed in pain but would not stop. She thought of her Father still and the fight grew in her. She could not see him now, not in her fury, but she would not stop. Images flooded the room. The chains around her wrists and feet fell away, shattered like glass on the floor and disappeared. Grabbing at the tethers around her waist she freed herself. The door was still open. She did not know how long she stood, silently crying in her rage before she collapsed. Allowing her emotions to fully break through, she began to release her tears. The blood falling from her torn wings hit the floor creating rubies. Time works differently here, she could have been fighting and crying for a thousand years, but between the pain and the fact that she broke free, it didn't matter. The pain of her bare feet stepping on all those rubies and diamonds was nothing to her.
It took a long time to compose herself and finally she breathed deep sigh, walked to the piano and sat down. Blood still dripping down the marks on her wings, she no longer cared about the pain, she wanted it, longed for any feeling of her own. She was still too weak to heal herself. Her hands caressed the beautiful keys and she began to play. The room flooded with incredible images of her Father, from the open door she could see a Demon looking in, wide-eyed and scared. She looked at him with the glare of brilliant red/gold still in her eyes but never faltered in her playing. The Demon was apparently drawn by the sound of the piano. She did not stop until the song was complete. Her wings were healed, her shine had returned, as did her strength. She didn't care about time anymore, she was free. She will find him.
The Demon had been long gone as she made her way to the door. She did not know if she had the ability to leave this place, but she was going to try. Even if it was going to be her end. That was when she saw him. She hardly made it three steps from the piano's bench when he stepped into view. She was overwhelmed with emotion and fell to her knees. She began to sob, more tears streaming down her face. Her wings brushing the floor.
Lucifer stared at her wings for what seemed an eternity. He knew no other Angel in Heaven had white wings, only him - but these were mixed with a radiant gold. Her thick hair, long and white with streaks of gold was like no other. It's length reached the floor and spread out like fan, it was breathtaking.
"Hello." He asked in his melodic voice. "Now who might you be?"
She could not move, unsure if it was fear or the simple fact that she was finally in His presence. 'This cannot really be him, where are his wings?' she thought.
"Hello?" He began to snap his fingers and his voice grew bold, but not as if he were yelling, "Oh for... I'm not going to harm you. Look at me."
She looked him in the eye, still on her knees and like her Father, She also, could not lie, "Forgive me. I have waited my entire life to meet you."
"Yes, I am captivating, I know," He replied, pulling at one of his shirt cuffs, "But that doesn't explain who you are."
She was numb, but allowed herself to spit out the words. "Though you will not believe me, I am your firstborn."
"I beg your pardon?" was his only reply. His voice again, having a melodic tone.
Having no other answer, she stated, "I, like you, cannot lie, it is the truth."
"Right. Well, I don't know who or what gave you that idea." He stared down at the Angel before him, "But, If that's true, then what did you do to end up here?"
The words seem to flow as if they had been rehearsed a million times in her head, "The All-Father trapped me down here after he learned that I knew who you were. He kept me from you intentionally. He put me in this prison and made sure you couldn't see my thoughts as I can see yours." Her eyes had not left his since he asked her to. She remained obedient to a Father that knew nothing of her.
"The All-Father?" He questioned, "You mean God?"
"He told me he was to be called The All-Father." She replied. "That is your father, yes, we are talking about the same person."
"Interesting," he said. "Now back to what you were saying before, I am able to do many things, but reading someone's thoughts has never been one of them. Though, the wonders it would have afforded me back on Earth." He looked at her, and a strange feeling came over him, he reached down and caressed her hair. He couldn't believe how soft it was. He pulled himself from his thoughts and continued, "Right. Well, come on then, stand up." She did as he asked and he stared at her for some time, almost memorizing the details of her face. "Very well. You spin a wondrous tale. Tell me, who's your mother?"
She had not removed her eyes from his, but the images flashed on the walls, "She was a celestial from another universe, a manipulation thrown your way by the All-Father in an attempt to create the ultimate manipulation: Me." She bowed her head in shame, then raised her eyes to his again, remembering his instruction. "He destroyed her just moments after my birth. As I grew, he realized I was too powerful to keep under his control. I couldn't be used the way he wanted so, he banished me here."
He viewed the images as they came, but this being a Hell loop, brushed them off. "Forgive me if I don't just take you at your word." He replied in fashion as he motioned to the walls. "Nice touch with the details. Although manipulation is not outside of my father's purview."
She saw his thoughts, "I expect nothing, I never have. I just wanted to know you, wanted you to know me. The All-Father never told you about me, and were it not for my ability, he never would have told me about you." She replied.
"Right, right." He was now starting to understand, you can't create images in a Hell Loop unless they are your own memories. "Well then, how exactly do you plan to prove any of that? And would you please put your wings away." He asked, then he saw the pain manifest on the walls around her. Followed by images he himself was the only witness to. His hands on his piano. "Bloody Hell."
"Wait," The images faded as she stared at him quizzically, "put my wings Away? I don't understand this. I have never put them 'away', I don't know if it's even possible."
Shaking off what he just witnessed, he returned to her question. "What do you mean, you don't know if it's possible? Just put them away. It's simple, second nature even."
She continued to stare at him, tilting her head sideways.
"Uh fo- , Like this." He walked further into the room, opened his wings, and as he did, hers began to flutter and shine as if a wind had brushed them and they were hit by a spotlight. They appeared to almost get bigger. He stared at the shimmer coming off of them. The glow was immense, almost intoxicating. The walls began to show images of him, his own memories. His eyes went wide. "Well now, that was unexpected."
She smiled at him, "They only do this when I hear you play the piano or see your reflection in a mirror. They have never grown like that before, but again, I have never been in the same room with you. I can see your thoughts, look through your eyes but your image helped me know you better. I have never seen your wings before. Not unless you count when Maze cut them off, or when you cut them off and they were laying on the floor. That was bad for me, now I understand why mine look the way they do."
"Fascinating." He replied as if in awe, then he questioned, "Wait, Maze knew you were here and did nothing?"
She looked to him, "No. No, No, I know her from your memories. I like her, she's pretty."
"Maze?" He said aloud, just barely a whisper. Then he came back to her shining wings, "Yes, well, Now, just tell your wings to hide, like this." He shrugged his shoulders and his wings folded in. "Go on, give it a go."
She closed her eyes and looked in his mind, followed his instructions and shrugged her shoulders. Her wings folded in. She began to panic, she could not feel the weight on her back. He saw her reaction and tried to calm her. "Alright, alright, calm down. Shrug again, and tell them to come out."
She did as he asked and they appeared, shimmering and appeared to be almost dancing in his presence. She cried and once more fell to her knees. More images displayed on the walls. "Oh, for... this is getting tedious." He placed his hand on her head, "Stop crying, please. Stand up."
She obeyed, though it was not easy.
"You really believe you're telling the truth about all of this, don't you?" The look on his face was one of confusion, though she could read his heart, knowing he felt betrayed by his father, yet again, not wanting to face this truth.
"I cannot lie. I am telling the truth." She looked at him with pain in her eyes, "I was created as a betrayal, he did it to try and control you. He just didn't realize that a celestial was a poor choice of a mate if he wanted a tool he could use. Hence, her destruction, my banishment and subsequent imprisonment. Fitting life for the daughter of the Devil."
He looked at her for some time, knowing that his father was capable of just such a thing. "So, what you're telling me is that for all these years you could read my thoughts? Well now, that's frightening, and a bit disturbing. You've known everything I've done, yet you still stayed here just waiting for me to come to you?"
"Yes and no. My banishment made it so I couldn't leave. At least this is what I was to believe. It didn't matter though, this is where you were and I wanted to be near you." She shook her head, "But then you left, for so long. I didn't have the strength to leave. You were too far away for me to draw out my shine."
"Right." He looked at the door that had been open, "So, you could've left at any time and you never walked out? Because you believe- what? ...That you'll die?"
"In so many words, yes."
"Huh... My Demons informed me they feared you. Why do you think that is?"
"I was the one that created the bonds that held me here. In the beginning, one of your Demons tried to come in, the problem was, he attempted to destroy the piano as a form of my torture. I believe he had to be dragged out by another. I don't know if he survived, but I did tell them not to touch it. It was after that moment, I remembered little. When I came to, I was held up by the chains. I didn't fight against it, I thought I was a monster. I was made to feel like a monster, I was told I was a monster. So I became to feel that I deserved to be here."
When she spoke of this moment, the walls showed this horrific scene, her eyes changed to a vibrant gold/red. Her golden feathers had also changed to this color, then it faded as she calmed. He recognized that look, knew it all too well. He was beginning to believe her. She took a deep breath, feeling his fear for her.
She continued, "My biggest torment with leaving this room, not having that piano, and never being able to get to you." She looked at the piano as if she were looking at a lover. "Never being able to tell you who I am, that I love you and that even though you do not know me, you are the only thing that has kept me alive. You are all I've ever known that makes me feel worthy of my life. You and the music you play."
He paused, looking her directly in the eye, "You say I can see your thoughts, or rather I should be able to, but what I want to know is, What is your true desire?"
"I'm sorry Father," She smiled at him, "but that doesn't work on me."
"You'd think." He said, "Look at me."
She was willing to play along, putting up the mirror in her eyes, she looked directly at his eyes as he asked again, "Come on, you know you want to tell me, what is it you truly desire?" He began to speak, as if answering his own question, "I... I want... I want to know the truth of you."
"Wait, did you just make me Mojo myself?" Taken aback, he shook it off, "How did you do that?"
"Yes, you did just Mojo yourself. Not by my doing." She smiled. "I can reflect people's thoughts back at them. You use desire to pull out their true feelings, guilt or pain. I can use anything." She blinked and the mirror in her eyes vanished. "I am sorry, I didn't mean to invade. I can't do it myself, just use whatever someone has against them."
"That is truly remarkable. What is your name?" He inquired.
She sighed. The smile hurried from her face, replaced by sadness, "The All-Father didn't name me, in fact, he treated me as a monster. I guess he thought me unworthy of even that." Tears began to well in her eyes again, and she fought not let them fall. One ran down her cheek and hit the floor another solid diamond.
Lucifer leaned down and picked it up, holding it in his hand. "Oh now that is remarkable. Also explains the floor." He looked back to her. "Continue."
"Since he couldn't be bothered, I named myself Sunshine. One, because of my wings and two, because it reminded me of you and your light. It was pretty, and you like the sun. It was the closest thing to a name I've ever had. Not that anyone but me has ever used it. It's never been said out loud save for me, just now."
"Sunshine it is then," rolling the diamond in his hand, "it suits you." He could see that just his saying her name aloud made her wings fluff up. The smile that caressed her face lit her up like a star. "That's amazing, the way they flutter like that. Is it just me, or did they just get bigger?"
"Yes, they seem to puff up whenever you play too."
He shook off the view, returning to to his original line of questioning, "Right, Back to this," he held up the diamond, "you do this every time you cry, or you can just make them?"
"Only when I cry."
"Outstanding." he marveled. "So, as you claim, I should be able to see your thoughts - is that right?."
She let out a sigh, "I knew everything about you before I was born, after that, you were just always there. Allow me to simply hug you, to touch your bare skin, and you will see everything that has happened to me. Though I have to say, it may be very overwhelming, I feel like I have been here for millennia. That's a lot of information at once." She began to project some images on the walls, and stopped. "Please? I have waited so long just to be in your presence, if you don't want to, I will accept that. I know you're not big on hugs."
He looked at this Angel in front of him, she seemed so young. He couldn't understand how she could have been down here, possibly for millennia and he never knew. He had to find out the truth, he was willing to take the chance. "Well, you'll have to put your wings away again. Will you be okay with that or are you going to get scared and freak out again? Because the look on your face before was one of pure terror, and I don't want to do that to you. I reserve that for those that deserve it." He asked, "I also won't be able to hug you properly with them out."
She took a deep breath, and even though it frightened her to her very core she was going to do it. "For you, Father, I would do anything." She saw the look in his mind that he still didn't believe her. She shrugged and her wings folded in, she began to breathe deep, trying to calm herself. He moved in quickly but not as to make her afraid. He embraced her, his cheek touching hers. His mind exploded, flooded with an overwhelming barrage of images and emotions. He felt her pain, saw what his father had done to her mother, to her, the loneliness, betrayal and rejection. He saw that the music he played over the years calmed her, he felt her love for him. He could not let go, he didn't want to. He saw not only his life, but her mothers, he did remember her. He never forgot a lover. He had his truth. She began to relax, then release him.
She backed away slowly, releasing her wings once more. He noticed the shine coming off of them, it was almost a blinding light. Again, they appeared to be growing in size. He still had not moved. "Father?" she asked calmly, "Are you alright?"
A tear ran down his cheek, "Oh, my dear child, I am so sorry."
She saw the pain in him, "You have nothing to be sorry for, none of this was your doing. Well, save for the copulation with my mother, and who could blame you for that? You saw her, she was very beautiful and you must admit, fit your type."
"Well, I do have my ways..." He caught himself before going to far, "It may not have been my intentional doing, but I should've known, I should've been told." Now there was anger in his voice, not directed at her, but anger at the situation she was put in. "Amenadiel would've known if another Angel were in the Silver City and he did nothing." His eyes flashed a bright red. He was angry.
"Father," she said, taking his hand in hers calming him down, "Amenadiel didn't know, he was shielded from my presence, they all were. Please don't blame him. The blame is on the All-Father." She exclaimed. "He decided that I was to be an outcast, unloved, unwanted and imprisoned. He treated me like the monster because I am one."
He looked at her, "My father took my child away from me, treated her the same way he treated me and I'm just supposed to let that go? No, sending me to Hell for a rebellion is one thing, but this is just undeniable cruelty." His voice was at a near quiver, yet seething at the same time. "You were an innocent. He made you suffer, and for what? Simply for being my child?" His eyes were red again, his voice began to deepen and she became frightened. Then, out of nowhere, Chloe walked to the door.
"Lucifer?" She called in a soft, gentile voice.
His anger melted away, his breathing slowed, he calmed instantly. "Chloe." His voice now soft, relaxed.
Chloe's eyes fell to Sunshine, a puzzled look on her face. "I didn't know you were with one of your sisters, you disappeared and I had to ask Belios where you went."
Sunshine remained silent as Lucifer spoke, "Ah, yes. Um, Detective, this is not one of my siblings."
Chloe saw the look in his eyes, he was near to tears. "Lucifer, who is this? What's going on?"
Not knowing how to break the news to his love, and incapable of lying, he decided to just say it. "Right." He took her hand and walked her all the way into the room. "Detective, Chloe - this is my firstborn daughter, Sunshine." The mention of her name coming from her father made her wings flutter again.
Chloe's eyes went wide, in awe and anger. She felt betrayed, she thought Rory was Lucifer's only child. "Why did you never tell me about her?" She was mad at him. "Did you try and hide her from me? From Rory?"
"Detective, please..."
Before her father could defend himself, Sunshine spoke, "Please do not blame him, he had no idea I existed until just now. It is a very long and painful story. And one not of his making." A few images flashed on the walls, and she managed to stop them.
Chloe saw the brief images but could not understand them. "How? How is it possible you or Amenadiel didn't know another Angel existed? And of all things, a daughter, another Daughter?" She questioned angrily, shaking her head. "Why is she in a hell loop of all things?"
"Please, Chloe, please," he tried to calm her, brushing his hands on her shoulders, "Let's just say this is my father's doing. Besides, Sunshine is a lot older than you realize. Several thousand years old to be honest. She has apparently not been out of this room for millennia."
Chloe looked at the angel in front of her, "Millennia?" The word came out as a mere whisper full of sadness. "You barely look like you're in your 20's, even younger than Rory. I know angels don't age, but... Millennia?"
"Yes, I am very old. That is not in question." Sunshine explained, "You cannot blame Father for what was done to me. Do not be mad at him for what The All-Father did. You met him, you know how manipulative he is."
Chloe nodded at this statement and folded her arms in front of her. She looked to Lucifer, "I'm guessing we need to have a long conversation about this."
Lucifer looked to Chloe with concern and a half-hearted smile and then to his daughter. "Sunshine, can you show Chloe what you showed me? Will she be able to see your thoughts?" Again, her wings gave a flutter at the sound of her name from her Father. This did not go unnoticed by Chloe, but she did not know what to make of it.
"Father," She replied with her eyes wide, "I don't think that would be wise. She is mortal. The only mortal I have ever been near, in fact- ever seen. I don't know what it would do to her. I might destroy her, and that would hurt you. I won't take that chance. I will not cause you pain."
"What? She showed you her thoughts? What is that even like?" She looked to Lucifer, then waved her hands in front of her face, "Hold on, I am not mortal anymore, I died, I'm here, with you. Could she still hurt me?"
Opening his mouth as if to speak, he closed it again. Shaking his head he replied, "I- I don't know." He did seem genuinely confused. "All she did was touch me, It's how I learned the truth of who she really is." He paused, then finding a work around he stated, "She can also do something beautiful, would you like to see that?" His eyes shifted to Sunshine and he pointed to his back, "Can we do that?" She smiled at him and nodded in agreement. "Watch the walls, you will see the images."
"Sure. Okay, show me that." Chloe replied, still skeptical.
Lucifer moved to one side of the piano, Sunshine to the other. Her wings already exposed as she waited for her father to release his. She knew how it would rush her with feelings. How she would be flooded with love, and she wanted that. Lucifer smiled at Chloe, looked to Sunshine and released his wings.
The light in the room grew as Chloe stared at Sunshine, her wings fluttering as if some unseen wind were blowing them. The walls of the room began showing images of Lucifer, the sound of his piano playing filled the room. Chloe felt love, uncontrolled love. She began to well with tears, as did Lucifer. If it was one thing he related to, it was love. She was his daughter and she deserves to feel like it. Then came the pain, her loneliness. He extended his wings, pushing them to their maximum just to see what she would do. He was not disappointed in what he saw. Her wings, that already seemed too large for her, grew larger still and appeared to keep growing. The glow of light and gold was blinding, yet he took every ounce of it in. He had not realized Chloe shielded her eyes until he looked to her. He folded his wings back and went to her, swimming with apologies.
"No, No, NO. Detective, I am so sorry." He folded his hands around her face. "Chloe, Please forgive me. I'm so sorry, I- I just got carried away."
She opened her eyes, still slightly blinded, "Lucifer, that has to be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen."
"Well, now that's just rude." He said with a smile. "Here I thought I was."
Sunshine was still calming down, the light from her wings had dissipated enough. "Father, forgive me but I did not expect you to push your wings that far." Her breathing labored, "Had you pushed any further I feel like I could have lit the place on fire." It was at that point that she turned her face and looked to Chloe, fear welled up in her, "Please Father, Please tell me I did not hurt her, I would never forgive myself, I know what she means to you."
"She is fine, just overwhelmed. I was too when I saw it." He felt Sunshine's true concern for Chloe and found it beautiful. "Chloe? Are you okay?"
Chloe looked to Lucifer, then back to Sunshine, "All those images, the light, the music. Lucifer, there is no doubt, she's your daughter. All that pain. So alone. Your father did this to a child, an innocent child! Why?" Her voice, hardly a whisper, he stayed with her until she was composed. Making sure Chloe was truly okay, he began to see Sunshine's thoughts. The images and feelings came like a flood. She was not wrong in telling him it would be overwhelming. He turned to look at her.
Sunshine had backed away to the far side of the room, suddenly feeling a bit outcast as her father cradled Chloe in his arms. They have each other, they did not need her, no one wanted her. She was reminded why she was here, 'I am a monster.' She got to tell her father who she is, show him everything she has been through. That's all she wanted. He could see her thoughts now. Her wings dipped low, her eyes turned to the floor and she began to weep. That's when she felt his touch, a simple finger under her chin lifting her head.
"You are no monster. I feel your pain now. I'm not sure if I'll ever get used to having you in my head, but I'm sure we can adjust for that. Just know this, as my daughter, I will always love you. I want you to be part of our lives." He had locked eyes with her, "Will you put your wings away and let me hold you again?"
She straightened herself up, folded her wings back and prepared to accept the embrace. The unnatural feeling of her wings being gone notwithstanding, she did as he asked, would always do as he asked, would always obey him. He saw this in his mind. As he held her, she began to sob uncontrollably. He did not let go, he just let her cry. Chloe approached them and placed her hand on Sunshine's arm. Touching the exposed flesh of the Angel, she was instantly inundated with images, everything that God had done to her was there. All of her torment in Hell, revealed. All of Lucifer's memories too. Chloe, being overwhelmed, passed out. The touch lasted a fraction of a second, but it was enough.
Sunshine pulled away from her father quickly and jumped away from them both. "I told you Father, I am dangerous, I AM a monster, THIS -" she pointed to Chloe on the floor, "THIS is why I am here." Running back to the far corner of the room, wings out but folded around her as if in a self-hug, she fell to her knees. "This is why I can never be loved."
Lucifer checked on Chloe, "She will be okay, please don't be afraid, and NEVER say that again. You are not a monster."
"Can you be sure of that?" She said through tears, "Look what I've done! I hurt her and you will punish me now. You love her more than anything, you have died for her, and I just caused her pain. I have seen you punish people for far less, Father." Images of Lucifer punishing the many people that have harmed Chloe appeared on the walls, over and over.
Lucifer continued to check Chloe. He looked to his daughter, "Sunshine, I'm not going to punish you. Please stop talking like that, and make it stop."
Chloe was coming around, "Lucifer, that poor child. She has so much pain, it's all she's ever known. The only good memories she has are your memories. How could your father ignore such a beautiful creature? She's an innocent, and he treated her like..."
"Like what," Lucifer stated, "Like the Devil's spawn?"
"That's not funny Lucifer," she scolded him, "that child is living in constant anguish."
He looked at her, "Well it may not be funny, but it's exactly the sort of thing he would do."
They stood from the floor. He made sure Chloe was okay and walked slowly toward Sunshine. Her head now down facing the floor, the shine calmed from her wings as they were splayed around her. Tears and heaving sobs were all she could manage. A pile of diamonds had amassed under her. No words would come to her, but Lucifer could see her thoughts. He too, began to feel her pain and it made him well up. He saw that she was expecting to be punished by him for hurting Chloe, regardless of his insistence that he wouldn't. He knew that Sunshine could see his thoughts, and projected that he wasn't going to harm her, that he wanted to help her. To love her the way a father is supposed to; to show her a Family. Chloe didn't gain this ability and had no idea why Lucifer had not spoken and had prevented her from doing so.
He reached his hand out and placed it on her head, "So much pain for one so beautiful." He saw her reaction in his mind, "He never even told you that, did he? Oh, that bastard." He was furious with his father for this cruelty. He projected that in his mind and she saw it.
Sunshine's sobs lessened, but now she knew she couldn't even hug the woman that would be the closest thing to a Mother she will ever know. "I am so sorry Father."
Feeling her thoughts crushed Lucifer's heart. She was right, watching him and Chloe and now Rory all this time and the only thing she wanted was to be part of a family. A family she was denied from birth. Her gaze fell upon Chloe. She wanted a Mother figure, not just her father. A mother that was right in front of her, yet could not receive her touch.
She looked up to meet Lucifer's eyes, "I have just never been with other Angels or people or, well, anyone. I don't know how to do this! It's not the same for me as it is for you." Her eyes began to glow gold, "Aside from the Demon I nearly killed, you were the only Angel I have touched with my bare skin Father." Her eyes moved to Chloe, "I am sorry I hurt you, I didn't know you were going to do that or I would have stopped you. Please don't take Father away from me, I would rather you destroy me than have me be alone again."
"Take him away?" She looked so sad, "I would never dream of it." Seeing the relief in Sunshine's eyes, she came up with an idea. "Lucifer, give me your jacket."
"Whatever for?" he questioned.
She shot him a look, and he took it off, "Uh, Alright." he replied.
Chloe put the jacket on and placed the sleeve close to Sunshine's arm. She pulled back with a speed that was almost frightening. "Please don't, I don't want to hurt you again."
"I will do this quickly, Lucifer pull me away if it looks like it's not working."
"Like what's not working?" Then it hit him, "Oh, I see. Once the Detective, always the Detective." He smiled at her. "You touched her for a fraction of a second and passed out before. I doubt even I could be that fast."
"Lucifer!"
"Fine, Fine." he replied, putting his hands up.
He looked to his daughter and tried to put her at ease, "Right, well, we need to try, I'll be right here and we'll be careful. Try to control your thoughts, try to think of not hurting Chloe? I guess? Can you do that?"
"Yes, Father. As you wish." Sunshine waited for the touch, she cleared her mind. She tried to think of nothing, but the images of Lucifer engulfed her mind.
Chloe leaned in with the jacket covering her arm. No images came. She slowly pulled her hand out from under the sleeve until she was touching Sunshine's skin. Still, no images came.
Lucifer looked to Chloe, "Well now, clearly that's a bit of progress, isn't it?"
She felt the warmth of the touch, it was gentile and beautiful. She looked at Chloe and saw that she was smiling. "See Sunshine, this is a good beginning." Chloe gave the jacket back to Lucifer, and he adjusted himself.
"Maybe once I touch a person it won't happen again? The images though, I can't help the images coming through and anyone that touches me would see them. I tried, but all I could do is think of you, Father. They would know all that I have seen through your eyes."
"Yes, that could be bad. I can see now we have so much more to discuss." Lucifer gestured toward the door. "Shall we find ourselves somewhere more comfortable?"
She froze - stock still, her previous desire to leave the room had abandoned her. Her father was with her now, she had no reason to go. "Father, I don't know if I can leave, The All-Father banished me here. I'm afraid that if I leave this room, I will be destroyed."
"Destroyed?" Chloe questioned, "What does she mean, Destroyed?"
"Right. I see. Well, My father banished her here, so it would follow that said banishment would remain in place." He said, with a certainty in his voice. "I can understand why she wouldn't want to leave."
"Lucifer, go get Amenadiel, maybe he can help." Chloe asked. "I'll stay with her, and while you're going, ask Rory to come to see us."
"Are you sure about this Chloe? I mean, I am the King down here, remember?" He looked at her sternly. "Hell is under my rule, always has been."
"We need to be sure." Chloe pulled him aside, "Lucifer, please, just do it for her."
"Alright, for you." He smiled brushing his hand on Chloe's face. "Right, I'll be back as soon as possible, stay with Chloe. We'll figure this out." Lucifer walked out of the room, opened his wings and disappeared.
Sunshine looked at Chloe, "I'm sorry you had to see everything like that. I know this must be overwhelming for you."
"You could say that, yes, but when it comes to Lucifer, nothing surprises me anymore."
Looking Chloe in the eye, Sunshine spoke, "Well, as you saw, my real Mother was destroyed. I have never had a Mother to care for me, but I saw how much you cared for Trixie, Rory and Father through his eyes. I saw him die for you. I saw the times he cried for you when he couldn't bring himself to show you how much he loved you. He had incredible love for you but he was so afraid that he wasn't worthy. It broke my heart often to think he would muck it up, but in the end, he made the ultimate sacrifice for you. He burned in the Silver City." She never took her eyes off Chloe, but continued, "That was a horrible pain for me. I screamed so loud all of Hell shivered in fear, I thought I lost him forever. The thought of never getting to see him almost killed me. It was then that I wanted to die too. Then, I felt this rush of love wash over me. It was like nothing Father had ever felt before. He was flying again, and he found you, and you were safe. It was then that I realized that you could also, if you chose, be a Mother to me. That maybe you could learn to love me too. If Father and you ever found me."
Chloe had tears streaming down her cheeks, "I would be honored to be a Mother to you, Sunshine. Not just for you, but for Lucifer and Rory. Though I don't know how much mothering I can give to an Angel that's thousands of years old." She let out a comforting chuckle.
"I want to hug you, like I did with Father." Sunshines's wings began to flutter, "Now that IS strange, that only happens with Father. I guess when we touched my wings took a shine to you."
"I would like that." Chloe wiped away her tears and smiled. "You don't have to put your wings away, I know it makes you uncomfortable."
Sunshine smiled, "To hug my new Mother, I will be fine." She put her wings away and they embraced. No images, no pain, just a loving hug.
They both released each other, tears in their eyes. Sunshine's wings opened again, a shine was about them like it was with her Father.
Within moments, Rory appeared at the door. "Hi Mom, Hi random Angel I don't know."
"Rory!" Chloe shouted, "That is not nice. Please, come in, we need to talk."
Rory, sensing her mother's disappointment, put her wings away and entered the room. "Why are you crying?" She stared at the Angel in front of her, she had never seen her before but the wings, the wings were stunning. "Sorry Mom, Dad didn't tell me anything, he just said to come down, find you and wait for him and Uncle A."
No sooner did she finish speaking when Lucifer and Amenadiel appeared. They spoke outside the door for some time before coming in.
"Luci, I have no explanation for this." Amenadiel raised his hand toward Sunshine and then around the room. "Even with the power of being the Almighty, I still had no idea there was an Angel here. If I did, I would have told you."
Sunshine was now as far back in the room as she could get, again, wings folded around her. Too many people in the room. This was Rory. My sister, so different, the woman that was on Father's throne. She wanted to hurt him, but that has changed. Her wings, why are they like that? Father's brother - he is now the Almighty. Father calls him 'Amenigod' as a nickname. He should be able to let me out of here, make sure I can leave without being destroyed.
Lucifer walked to Sunshine, "Ah, Right. Hiding again. Of course. Child, come out, you have my word no harm'll come to you." He held out his hand and she took it gently. As he walked her closer to the group he could sense her fear. "It's okay, come." He turned to make introductions, "Rory, Brother, this is my daughter, Sunshine." As if on cue, her wings gave a flutter.
Rory looked annoyed. "So, I wasn't the only one you abandoned." She winked at Sunshine and smiled, "I'm joking, It's a long story." She mouthed, 'he didn't do that'.
"I know," Sunshine replied peeking out from behind Lucifer's shoulder with a smile, "I saw."
Rory looked at her, "What now?"
Sunshine thought she did something wrong and squeezed her father's hand tighter, he began to think that this may have been too much for her. He saw an image in his head, she wanted this, this was Family.
"Father did this to her, Amenadiel. He took her from me. Kept her from me and treated her like she was a monster. Made her believe she was a monster. He didn't even give her a name, can you imagine? She named herself after the way I made her wings 'Shine' whenever she thought of me." He continued, a small flash of red coming to his eyes, "And she does have such a beautiful shine about her." When he looked at her his voice changed, became soft. "It's almost blinding." This made her smile. Her wings gave yet another small flutter that did not go unnoticed.
"Speaking of that shine," Chloe looked at Shimmer and asked, "can you and Lucifer do the wing thing again, just to show them?" She pointed to her back and turned to face Lucifer, "Would you mind?"
Lucifer looked at Sunshine and she nodded and smiled wide. She would love that feeling again. He made a gesture to everyone to move further away as he took his place on the opposite side of the piano.
Sunshine's wings, already out flexed further, waiting in anticipation. Lucifer smiled at her, "Ready?"
She was not used to this kind of attention, but obeyed. "Yes Father, I am ready, open up. Just remember, do not push too far. I don't want to hurt mother."
"Mother?" Lucifer spoke to Chloe with a wide smile.
Chloe looked at him and waived her hand, "We had a heart to heart talk, I'll explain later."
He unfurled his wings and the images - so many images, music and fluttering light began again.
Rory was stunned, and a bit hurt that her father had such a connection with an Angel he never knew existed. Her wings adopted the darker side of her father, red and silver, weapon-like. Although they were wonderful, they couldn't do, well... this.
Amenadiel was filled with a beautiful love, but a tremendous sadness at the same time. His heart began to break, thinking of how he would feel if this was his own son. This poor child. The dance continued, the light and her wings grew. The most amazing white/gold light that would make the very Silver City seem drab by comparison. She had the same light that Lucifer had, and Amenadiel saw this. She was not just like him, she was the very best of him and it was by her choice. She self-actualized to be the light of her Father, a light bringer. Not one Angel could make their wings grow like this. It was strange and beautiful at the same time. It was true beauty, true sadness, pure love and pure anger rolled up in a light that could blind.
Lucifer calmed his wings and Sunshine settled down. He folded his wings away and waited for the response that he knew was coming. She backed away from them yet again, and tried to move back to her corner, Lucifer intercepted her. "No, no. No hiding."
"Holy crap, that was intense." Rory let out. "We can do that? Or is that just a", she waived her hand, 'Sunshine' thing?"
Chloe looked at Rory, "Really?" She shook her head.
"Mom, seriously," she shot her mother a look, "Did you not see what I just saw? That... was amazing!" Rory exclaimed, moving closer to Sunshine.
She cowered behind her father but smiled, knowing that she made her sister happy.
"Rory, stop." He put his hand out quickly, "There's something else you should know before touching her." Lucifer already understood what Sunshine's fear was and wanted to help them understand. "Something you should all understand."
Addressing the room, he told them of her ability to transfer thoughts between people that touch her. The way she was able to turn his Mojo on him, and how she believed that it could be done to anyone.
Chloe looked at them. "It knocked me out, and all I did was touch her arm for a second."
"Yeah, but Mom, you're a mortal, we're Angels." Rory replied.
"You're a Half-Angel, Rory." Chloe looked to her daughter. "We don't know what will happen to you either."
"Yeah, but I want to see if my wings can make her do that too. I mean, come on, that was awesome." Rory was truly excited with the prospect. "Can we try, Dad?"
Lucifer cut her off. "Rory, please. All in due time. There are myriad things that you need to know." Lucifer continued, "Her mother was a celestial, a very powerful one. She's incredibly strong - stronger than me. Possibly stronger than you, Brother. Even Father was afraid of her. Hence her banishment and subsequent imprisonment. These are just the powers we know about."
Rory didn't care, this was her sister and she was determined to see if she could do what her father just did.
"Luci, if she can do these things, then I can see why Father may have had a reason for keeping her from others, but doing this..." Amenadiel looked around at the room she was in, yet again. "This goes beyond any type of punishment even you could have thought of."
"How dare you." Lucifer replied to his brother. Then catching the visions of his daughters pain, turned to her, "Sorry, darling. Force of habit. It may take some time to get used to seeing your thoughts, it's getting crowded up there."
She let out a small chuckle, "I can assure you, I mean none of you any harm. I was never shown or taught how to control my abilities. The All-Father never touched me with his bare hands, and kept me away from everyone. Especially Father. I will forever hate him for that." Her anger grew as she spoke through clenched teeth, "I wanted answers, I wanted Father, and he punished me for it. Banished me here, took everything from me. I've had hatred for him for so long." Her eyes glared a red with a bright rim of gold. Lucifer felt this rage immediately. He knew what that was.
"No, No, NO..." He looked her in the eye, finger pointed upward, "Now that, you must learn to control." He tried to calm her. "That's not a path you want to walk down. Not even for that reason. Trust me child, that leads to nothing but sorrow."
She lowered her head, ashamed she couldn't control herself. "I have disappointed you. Please don't be angry with me." Her wings dipped again as she tried to hide behind him. He knew she had no idea how to be near people. He saw that she began to think that everything she did was wrong. That needed to change.
Rory had also seen this, but remained quiet. She was familiar with that rage. Her father had helped her to control her anger too.
He again, placed his finger under her chin and lifted her head. "There is no shame in that anger, but you must control it. And my children bow to no one, not even Amenadiel." He smiled at her and gave her a wink.
"Yes, Father." She held her head up, determined to remain obedient.
"Right, well, we're together now and we have time to teach you everything you need to know. I'll do everything in my power to do so." He cradled her face in his hands and kissed her on the forehead. Her wings fluttered with happiness.
"Oh, come on, that is so cool." Rory added, "I have to try that, please?" Looking at the way Sunshine's wings danced when her father touched her made Rory jealous.
Lucifer looked to her, "How often can you do that?"
"Father, there were nights you played the piano for hours, mostly when you were sad about Chloe. My wings would dance even in their sadness the entire time." She smiled and pointed to the floor littered with diamonds, "Rory is my sister, and part of you, so it couldn't hurt to try. We may not have a direct connection, but we have you in common." She looked directly at Rory, "Please don't be upset if nothing happens, Father is all I have ever known and I don't know if it will work with anyone else. It only worked once with Mother, after she touched me."
"Yup, got it. No promises." Rory said. "Man, This is so cool." She quickly moved to where her father had stood and waited for everyone to back away. "Ready?"
"Yes." Sunshine replied. "Let's give it a try."
Rory opened her wings, expecting Sunshine's wings to flutter, but they did not. Instead, they did grow - and some of her golden feathers took on a silver hue and began to glint with prisms. This feeling was new to Sunshine, she felt odd, like she wanted to dance around the room. It was then that she realized Rory's wings had started to grow large white feathers, just a few, with her sharp silver tips, but the change seemed beautiful. They had shared a moment and it made Sunshine smile.
Lucifer noticing this, quickly put a stop to the exchange. "Okay ladies, that's enough for now."
Rory put her wings away, slightly disappointed. "Bummer, thought that would have been way cooler."
"Didn't you notice or feel the change to your wings, Rory?" She asked, pointing to the silver shaded feathers in her own wings. "You shared these with me."
"No, did mine change?" Fearing the loss of her 'bad-ass wings' she opened them again, just long enough to see the few large white feathers with sharp silver tips that had grown. She folded them away, "What the hell? How did that happen?"
"Yes well, she can do that too, it would seem." Lucifer replied.
Rory looked to her father, "Your wings didn't change. Not one bit." She looked hurt. "Why not?"
Lucifer understood, and he could feel the disappointment coming from Sunshine. "Honestly Rory, I am her father, she's like that because of me. She doesn't want to share her light with me, she wants to feel my light shining on her."
"Okay, I get that." Lucifer's explanation comforted Rory. "Are these white feathers permanent, or will they go back to normal?"
Sunshine had no answer, "I do not know. I have never done this with anyone except Father, and he is the only reason I exist, the only reason I want to exist." She began to feel guilty, "I'm sorry it didn't go the way you wanted. I wanted to make you happy."
"Na, you're all good." Rory looked to her sister, opened her wings again and admired her new feathers. Then put them away. "We did say 'No promises', right? Besides, they do look awesome."
This made her smile, "You - you're not angry with me?"
"They look like the streaks in my hair, wicked cool."
"Well then, that does make me happy." Sunshine's wings began glowing, and her father could see the happiness in her heart.
Lucifer's attention turned to Amenadiel, "What are we going to do Brother? I refuse to keep her here any longer, is she safe if she leaves this room or no?"
"Luci, all I can say is that being God, I'm sure I can now grant her permission to be free."
"Oh, right, well then, that should work. Thanks Brother, should be all good now." Looking at Amenadiel with a glare, "Like I wouldn't burn to death going to The Silver City even though Dad popped off to Mom's universe?" He shook his head, "No, no, no. Sorry that your word isn't good enough, brother. I won't hurt her, even if Almighty Amenigod claims it so."
"Luci, that isn't fair."
"No, it isn't, is it? I need assurances." Lucifer stated. "Would you take that chance with Charlie if he were in her position?"
"Luci!"
This entire time the fear rose in Sunshine, she couldn't stop the images of Father burning in Heaven, the walls had now become covered with them. Lucifer turned and took her hands. "I'll fix this, I'll find a way." He looked to everyone in the room, "We'll find a way."
Rory spoke up, "Woah, she saw Lucifer burn in The Silver City? How is she doing this? This is awesome."
Sunshine looked to her, "No Rory, when Father burned, I saw it through his eyes. It is painful, but they are the only memories I have." She let out a sigh, "I have no real memories of my own. Except for the ones we just made here."
Amenadiel spoke up, "Luci, what if we ask Gabriel? She is the only one that can go to Mom and Dad's Universe. She can ask them to set her free. Or at least tell me how to."
"Oh come on Brother, do you really want to pull on that thread?" Lucifer was in no mood, he knew Gabriel would tell everyone. "Tell her and before long Hell will be crawling with our siblings just coming here to gawk at my daughter that Dear ol' Dad trapped in Hell. No, Hell no." He was full of anger again, "Who's to say that he won't come here and destroy her just to make sure she never gets out? No, I can't allow that."
The fear was back in her again. Not just fear, but her unending loneliness. "I'm going to be here forever, aren't I?" More images flashed on the walls, pain, fear and being chained to the wall. Sunshine, with tears in her eyes, walked to the piano and sat down. "May I please have a moment? I want to play. I NEED to play before I'm chained up again and I no longer can. The music makes me calm and all of this is just very overwhelming."
"Out, all of you, out." Lucifer motioned everyone into the hallway, he stayed in the room. "Do you mind if I stay?"
"It would be my true desire Father, to play beside you." She moved over on the bench, giving him room.
He sat beside her on the piano. "Well then, what shall we play?"
"I would like to play Fantasia in F minor by Schubert, if you don't mind such a long song. You often played the recording when you were sad."
He looked at her, "Wonderful selection my dear. Never had the chance to play the piece with anyone but Schubert." He placed his hands in position, "Shall we give it a go then?"
As they began, the images created in the room showed love, the love of Sunshine for Lucifer, Lucifer's love for Chloe and Rory. Then newer images of her seeing Lucifer's wings, right in front of her. Their beauty and the way they made her feel. Everyone standing outside the room saw this. Her wings had not stopped fluttering, and one of them had cradled her father as if she was holding him as they played. They seemed to grow to twice their size, how that was possible was a mystery yet to be solved. The glow coming off of them maintained a steady shine as to not blind. However, it was as beautiful as a morning sun. As the long song came to a close, the images slowly faded. Her tears, now of happiness, did not create diamonds as they fell. They were now pearls of the most brilliant white that rolled across the floor. She was complete, she had gotten her greatest desire. Her Father knowing her, playing the piano together and meeting her family. Even if the All-Father destroyed her, she would be happy.
He whispered in her ear, "So, that was your greatest desire? Right, well I suppose you now know, I'll never let you be destroyed. You have my word." He kissed her cheek. "That was beautiful, just as you are."
"You know as well as I do Father, we will never be sure that I will survive leaving this room. I have come to terms with that now." She took his hand. "I was only willing to leave out of fear that you were in danger, and I see now, I was wrong. Rory didn't harm you and it all worked out for the best. Besides, by the time I managed to free myself from the chains and compose myself, the situation had resolved and you were back here. They are your real family. I was never ment to be, I am just a monster, the unwanted product of a one night stand and I have accepted that."
"Now, please let that be the last time you call yourself a monster." He didn't understand where this was coming from. "Never let that be who you think you are. You are beautiful, you are light, and you shine like a star."
"How am I to know that?" She looked him in the eye, "What am I to believe, if all I have ever known is that I was called and treated that way. Look what I did to Chloe, I showed her my shine and it almost blinded her. She touched me for a second and I could have killed her. What would you have thought of me then?" Her eyes flashed a brilliant gold, "I'll never be able to have physical love, not like you've had, not like anyone has had." Her eyes now changed to a red/gold, "I'm not supposed to exist, maybe it's best if I no longer do. Maybe, now that I have met you, I should be destroyed."
"Calm down, please." Lucifer, having seen the images in her head and feeling her pain responded, "Please don't talk like that. Just because we don't have the answers yet doesn't mean we won't figure it out."
"It's a bit more complex than that Father, I fear I may be too far gone for any help. Even from you, even from Amenadiel. I have been here way too long to know anything but pain and rejection."
"What do I have to do to prove you wrong? To show you that I care, that we care." He pointed out the door where Amenadiel, Chloe and Rory were talking. They couldn't hear the others speaking, but Lucifer noted that they seemed to be plotting. "Right, yes."
"If you would excuse me, my dear, I need to stop them from doing whatever idiotic thing they plan on doing." He walked to the door, she remained at the piano.
"Amenadiel, don't do anything that I may make you regret later. God or no, that is my daughter in there and I'll not let her come to any harm."
"Luci, the only way we can free her and know for sure she will be safe is to tell Father he has to remove her banishment."
He shook his head, "Oh, such great counsel from the Almighty Amenagod. You do understand, if he does that it would be removing His Decree. Cain's mark? My burning in the Silver City? Any of this ringing a bell or have you gone mad all of a sudden?"
"Yes Luci, but I am God now, and since you don't think I can remove the banishment, we need to get Father to do it." Amenadiel shot back, "Besides, not one person knows of her, so the banishment is not written Decree, just something father did."
"You honestly think there's a difference, don't you? He's been manipulating me for eons Brother, you think this is any different?" He pointed back to his Daughter.
Amenadiel looked at him, "I understand how you must feel, Luci."
Lucifer became angry again, "Do you now? You really believe that? Oh, right then. Forgive me for questioning your Almighty judgement Brother, but -" He cut himself off, looking at Amenadiel, "Hold on now. You already told Gabriel, didn't you?" Lucifer turned his eyes again to Sunshine, knowing she was able to hear the entire conversation. She was crouched in the corner again, gripped by fear, wings splayed on the floor. She was pale, her shine almost completely gone. He saw how scared she was of being destroyed, being erased. Felt her pain. The image of her birth mother dying, and her soul no longer being linked to her made Lucifer nearly sick.
"Oh, marvelous. That's just great, thanks for that, as if she wasn't living in fear already." He turned his back on his Amenadiel, "If anything happens to her, I'll destroy the Silver City, and everything in it."
"Luci!"
Chloe looked at Amenadiel, "I hope you know what you're doing, because he is right. If anything happens to her, it will break his heart. I don't think he'll come back from that."
"Mom, I'm gonna go, I don't want to see this. Dad was never good with dealing with his own father, and you throw this into the mix and it will get ugly."
"Stay close Rory, in case I need you." Chloe understood, "You know how your father was when he found out about you, imagine what this must feel like."
"I know Mom." Rory looked into the room, her father on the floor, holding his daughters hands trying to make her feel better. "He's in a lot of pain and it's freaking me out."
Gabriel appeared, uncomfortable being in Hell. She had never been here and really did not want to be here now. She still managed to peek into the room to see the Angel her father banished. She and Amenadiel traded pleasantries, then she spoke, "Dad said, when he left you gained control over every part of his powers in this universe, so setting her free is up to you. You set Decree and she wasn't part of that. He just created her loop. He did say to just be careful. She is very powerful and he has reason to believe, dangerous." She looked around nervously.
Amenadiel looked at her, "What did he mean by very powerful and dangerous?"
"You want me to figure out what his cryptic answer really means? I gave up on that a long time ago." She stared at him, "Can I please go now?"
Amenadiel gave her a wave and she left. He had no problem letting her go, but the warning stuck with him. If his father thought she was powerful and dangerous there may be more to her than what she lets on or possibly knows about. He can't take her from Lucifer, but she will need to learn how to control her abilities. He thought of Charlie and within seconds, released her from her banishment.
Chloe looked at Amenadiel, "I know this is going to be difficult, maybe you can talk it over with him before you make a decision."
"It's already done, Chloe. I won't keep her here one more second." Amenadiel looked at her, "Her banishment is over. She is free. Just keep her close and don't let her go anywhere alone. For now."
She looked into the room, Lucifer and Sunshine were still sitting on the floor, hand in hand. Her wings, splayed out around her, having returned some of their lustrous shine. "How do I tell them?" She turned to look but Amenadiel was gone. She was in the hall, alone. "Lucifer, the banishment is over. Your father gave Amenadiel the power to let her out."
Lucifer turned his head, he saw that everyone was gone but Chloe. "No one wanted to see what would happen, or they know and don't want to be near me when it does?"
"Gabriel spoke to your father, she said that when he left and Amenadiel became God all that was Decree fell to him. However your father said she was very powerful and could be dangerous and that she shouldn't go anywhere alone for the time being. I guess it didn't matter to Amenadiel because he said he wouldn't keep her here one more second and set her free, then left."
"Are you very powerful and dangerous?" He looked to his daughter.
She looked at him and shrugged, "How would I know? I've never been around anyone until all of you showed up. All I want is to be near you Father." She sighed, "If you would feel safer, I will remain here. As long as you come to see me and play piano with me."
Lucifer was stunned, "Why on Earth would I want you to stay here? I want you to join us." He reached out his hand, "Are you willing to try? I'll not leave your side, you have my promise."
She looked in his eyes, "Your word is your bond. If I burn, you'll destroy the Silver City? Is that what you want for Chloe and Rory? Would you sacrifice that for me?"
"Yes, Yes, No and Yes." He answered, making her smile. "The point is, I know punishment and you don't deserve this. You deserve to have a drink and a good meal." He paused, looked to Chloe and back to Sunshine, "With family."
"You and Chloe don't have a room like this, here?"
"What? No, I'm the Ruler of Hell, I recreated the Penthouse for us. And added a penthouse for Rory, and now," he closed his eyes and opened them again, "you have your own penthouse, just like mine."
"This would explain why all my memories are of you there." She looked at him, "Wait - Do I get the wall of Scotch and my own Piano?"
"Yes, child. You have a wall of Scotch and a Piano." He laughed. "There it is. Truly there is no doubt you are my daughter."
He stood up, ready to make his way from the room. He took her hands and helped her up. "Okay now, fold those in, and let's give it a go, shall we?"
She put her wings away, still uncomfortable with the feeling and he led her to the door. She paled again at the threshold. Chloe held out her hand, she reached for it. It was beyond the door, no pain, no burning. She moved closer, further out. Still no pain. She held her breath. Lucifer stepped through the door, holding her other hand. She stepped out. She was fine. The three of them, walked toward Lucifer's chambers.
Sunshine turned to look back at the room she had been in for so long, noticing that the door had disappeared. She began to cry, she was finally free.
Lucifer saw those images, felt her relief and understood exactly how she felt. "Your current mood aside, it only gets better from here."
She was looking around at the halls, all the other doors and all the souls trapped behind them. She wanted to help them, like her father does. She will need to learn more. That image made Lucifer proud. They came upon a door and Chloe let go of her hand and entered. Sunshine froze, yet again. Lucifer felt her terror, she saw this as just another room to be trapped in, he hadn't thought of that. It never entered his mind, but he saw it in her. She thinks she's going to be betrayed, again.
Chloe turned, "What's wrong?"
"She thinks it's a trap." Lucifer stated, "I'm so sorry, I can't believe I didn't realize it before. I was so focused on getting her out of that room that I didn't think it would appear to her as just another Hell Loop." He looked to his daughter, trembling, still frozen in her spot, tears welling in her eyes, "This will not do. I need to taker her to Earth. Possibly let her fly for a while before I can prove to her she won't be stuck here."
"You do realize that you being gone for a day is like a hundred years for me, right?" Chloe looked hurt, since her passing they had never been separated.
"Detective, please." He turned back to meet his daughters gaze, "Think of what she's been through."
Chloe could see it in his eyes, he was willing to do anything for his daughter. To prove to her that he's not the man his father was. "Okay, okay. Just get Rory for me so I don't sit here alone, please?"
He looked to her, "I love you."
He turned to Sunshine, "Don't move, I'll be back in a few minutes."
He did not lie, no sooner did he unfurl his wings, he was gone. He was back quickly with Rory, but Sunshine felt like it was an eternity.
"Hey again, Sunshine."
"Hello again, Rory." She replied.
Lucifer entered his chamber and kissed Chloe. Sunshine saw them speaking but blocked out what her father was saying. Rory went to her mom. Lucifer returned to the hallway, "Alright then, Shall we take a trip to Earth, my dear?"
"Am I allowed to do that?" She asked. "Just because I could leave that room doesn't mean I won't burn up if I leave Hell."
He could feel her heart pounding as if it were in his own chest. "Right, give me one of your feathers, one of the gold ones, so I can prove to you that you'll be fine."
"Pull out one of my feathers?" She was in shock, why would he ask her to do such a painful thing? Then the images came, she saw that the feather, being part of her would or wouldn't burn if it went to Earth. She reached to her wing, grabbed a large Gold feather and pulled. The pain was terrible, but she handed the feather to father. A small drop of blood rolled down her wing. He tried to wipe it away, it hit the floor, a solid ruby. He gave her a wink and flew up. Knowing she could see everything he did, she paid close attention. The feather made it, he flew for some time and when he felt her relax, he came back, feather in hand and unharmed.
"Ah, now, feeling better?" He knew she was, "Come, come. Let's go fly." He said. She was at ease and trusted him.
She flexed her wings, "I haven't flown in millennia, I would be honored that my first flight as a free Angel be with you Father." She pumped her wings and was off the ground, her father by her side. He was able to see the full scope of her wings as they flew. They were huge, too large for someone her size, but without question the most beautiful wings he had ever laid eyes on.
He took the lead, thinking to her to follow him. She did as he asked and in a flash everything changed. The air was different, it was beautiful. She really was free. She is now on Earth, her Father's favorite place. It is just as wondrous as she believed. All the lights, above and below, things she had only seen in her father's eyes. They landed in a secluded area and he put his wings away.
He looked at his daughter, "Right, um, you'll need to put those away when you're here. Trust me child, mortals don't take to seeing our kind easily." He said, pointing at her wings.
She folded them in and took a moment to relax. She couldn't feel the weight on her back and it was so strange and scary at the same time. A shiver gripped her as the wind passed by. Though the breeze was warm, she was unfamiliar with it. Without her wings she could feel the air all around her, it was a feeling she had never known.
"Yes, we do need to get you some clothes. What you're wearing just won't do for the time." He looked at the very old open backed dress and had an idea. "Maybe we should to head to LUX, so you can see the real penthouse. Then we can find you a new outfit somewhere. It's been quite some time since I was here last, so I can do with something a bit more updated."
She looked down at her dress and felt shame. "I don't remember anything but this. I don't think I'm supposed to cover my back, but again I never knew my wings could go away, so that may have something to do with it. I know that I would like to please you father, so let's be off then."
"You don't need to please me." He touched her cheek, "I would like to please you." His smile made her eyes glow a bright gold. "Maybe we could have a nice tailored white suit to match your wings? Gold lining and pocket swag?" He pointed out his suit in detail as he spoke.
She laughed, "In other words, like you?"
He laughed as well, "We could find something more your style, if that is your wish." He smiled and thought of Rory and going to the tailor when they first met.
"I like the way Rory looks, it's cool." She looked in his mind and her expression changed to fear, "Wait - Your family is there, at LUX. How do we explain who I am and how I'm here?"
"Well it's simple, I'll just tell them the truth. Why should I care what they think?" He never did before, and it's not a time to start now. "Besides, if I know Gabriel, everyone already knows and they're most likely waiting for us to show up or they will come down to Hell to see you anyway."
"Do you deem that wise, Father?" She asked, "They will have questions, they'll want to touch me, they'll want to make me Shine!" She began to get afraid again, her wings exploded out and wrapped around her. "I don't know what that will do to them. What if I hurt someone?"
"Careful child, you need to get your wings under control." He saw the fear in her eyes. Maybe this was too much for now. They should go back. "Okay, okay. We can go back to the Detective and Rory, have a nice meal and lots of scotch and come back again. We can bring Rory next time. Maybe she knows somewhere you could get some new clothes. Something fitting a young lady."
"Young?" She laughed, "This is a bit overwhelming. Please, and I want to try Scotch. I know you like it." She smiled.
He let his wings out, "Shall we? We will be back. You have my word."
"For now I am happy, this has been a very strange day for me."
They flew off, back down to Hell. Lucifer had not noticed that after they lifted off, a patch of bright white and gold flowers sprang from where She had stood. Her bare feet, having touched the soil where her light flowed through her.
Upon their return to Hell, Rory and Chloe were waiting inside the chamber of Lucifer's rooms. He folded his wings away and she did as well. It still felt unnatural to her, but Father wanted it, so she obeyed. Walking into the room with trepidation, she tried to project images to the walls, it would not work. She began to breathe hard and shake. Lucifer took her hand, "This is not a Hell Loop, it's my making, so it doesn't work like the other rooms."
"Safe?" She relaxed. "Not a trap, just your room."
"No, not a trap, you could walk right out and back in anytime you like. Just be sure you listen before you come in, the Detective and I have a habit..."
She cut him off, putting up her hand and closing her eyes, "Yes, I know. There were times I couldn't get some of those images out of my head." The smile on her face grew wide, "Believe me, I was jealous. I have never known physical love, as much as I desire to have it like you do. I just can't touch people without hurting them."
This hit him like a knife to the heart. All this time, all alone and never being able to love. He couldn't imagine what it must be like.
Chloe interjected, "Welcome back, you guys." She handed Lucifer a glass of scotch and gave him a kiss. "Sunshine, did you enjoy your first trip?"
"Yes, Mother." she replied, "I did very much."
"As promised." Lucifer handed the glass of scotch to Sunshine and proceeded to grab another for himself. He clinked the glass to hers and they drank.
The warm liquid flowed down her throat, it tasted wonderful. "It is as I thought it would be, I know why you like it so much." She turned to Chloe, "Earth was beautiful, but also scary. I do see why Father loves it so much." She winked at Chloe, "After all, he found you. Father also says I need new clothes. She looked down at her feet, "And I guess a pair of shoes. I've never had shoes!"
Rory chimed in, "Oh, I can so totally help you with that. After we eat, you can grab a shower and we'll try on some of my stuff and see what fits."
"I would like that, but just don't touch my bare skin." She reiterated the warning her father had given before. "Wait, can I shower? Will the water touching my skin have my memories? Will I have it's?"
Lucifer stared at her, "You have never been bathed either?"
"No, I have seen you shower. Alone and with many, many people, but never done it myself."
"Ah, Gross!" Rory exclaimed.
"Oh, right. Really wish you hadn't said that out loud." He looked at Rory, her face twisted in an awkward smile, "It isn't like I knew she was watching."
Sunshine's head began to bow low, "I did it again, didn't I?"
He went over to her, "Well, we shall have to test another theory then. Before sending you to bathe."
"I have an idea." Chloe poured a glass of water and brought it to them. "One drop, on her hand."
She tucked her hands behind her, "Do I have to?"
Lucifer smiled at her, "One drop, and we'll know. If it makes you see images, we will not do it again."
"Yes Father, as you wish."
He felt the fear in her and sent his thoughts to her, 'I'll be right here.'
She put her hand out, expecting the worst of images. The drop hit her hand, nothing came. "More, please." More water poured over her hand, still, no images came. "I see nothing. She could feel the happiness in her father, she too, was happy. "I guess I can get wet!"
Chloe smiled. "I should start making a list of what she can do and things she doesn't react to. Just so we can learn all of them."
"A splendid idea, as always my Detective." He kissed Chloe's hand.
"Now, let us have a nice meal, shall we?" He laughed a bit at the thought of both daughters sharing clothes. Then he remembered his family.
"What?" Rory quipped at her father.
Sunshine already saw what he was remembering. He spoke up, "Family dinner." is all he said. "Hopefully this goes better than the last family dinner I had."
Sunshine's smile grew wide. "I promise not to question your love for your children and to answer your questions with the truth."
Rory had been following the conversation and was very confused, "What was that all about?"
"I guess it's a story I'll share over dinner, even Chloe doesn't know it." Lucifer replied.
As they sat and had dinner, Lucifer told the story of his family dinner with Amenadiel, Michael, Linda and His Father. It gave Rory an insight she didn't have into Lucifer. It made sense, that's why when she first went back in time he was furious that she would accuse him of abandonment. She knew some things, but this just made it all so clear. It was because of his father. His brother Michael also sounded like a total dick. She was glad now that she didn't talk to him. How could he be so cruel?
Sunshine, having known all of this already, listened with near blank expression. She could see his story as he spoke about it, she was there, sharing her father's thoughts when the All-Father would not answer his simple question. 'Dad, do you love us.' She felt that pain, also felt the pain he had, knowing that if his own father could not say those words, how could he say them to Chloe? She knew deep down that her father was in love, even before that fateful dinner. He was afraid to say he was in love, he didn't feel like he was good enough. Sunshine remembered this, the feeling she had trying to send her thoughts to her father. 'Tell Her!' she would yell, over and over only to have him not hear her. She was happy he was able to finally figure it out. Not happy he had to die, but happy none the less.
"So, wait," Rory spoke, "You asked God, your Dad, if he loved you and he couldn't just say, Yes?" She shook her head, "What an ass."
"Rory!" Chloe snapped. "That's not nice. Your father went through a really hard time because of that."
"What? Lucifer let me shoot him to prove he loved me. Come on Mom, if that's not love I don't know what is!" Rory took Lucifer's hand and have it a squeeze.
He picked up her hand and gave it a kiss.
"I'm sorry I have no happy memories to share. All I have are Father's memories, and they are not mine to speak about. " Sunshine was saddened by this. Lucifer saw her memories, and of the ones she could share that were her own, were full of nothing but pain and sorrow. Not exactly good conversation.
Chloe added, "Yes, well now we have time to make some happy memories of your own."
Sunshine continued, "Then there are some I wish I didn't see." She looked to her father squinted her eyes and smiled, "You Perv."
"Well thank you," he added, "but as you know, I'm not the Devil I once was." He tipped his glass then took a drink. When looked to Chloe and his entire demeanor changed. Sunshine saw the love in his mind and it was beautiful. "And if I knew you were watching, I would have been blindfolded."
"Oh, would that it were that easy, but it doesn't work like that. I can feel what you feel too, remember?" The smile on her face was wide, "So, yeah. Millennia of that..."
Lucifer stared at her, now he was in shock. "You what?"
"Every man, every woman, every detail I couldn't stop from flooding through." She showed him some of the images, then pulled back, "I'm so sorry Father, but when I was so alone, I tried to make it stop. It just wasn't easy. If it makes you feel any better, you can now see all of that happening to me. If I let you and if I ever learn how to touch people without killing them."
Rory jumped in, "Gross, I really don't want to know this."
"I wish I didn't either," Sunshine said, "but I do. Again, I'm sorry, I don't know how to be with people, was what I did wrong?"
"No, it wasn't wrong." Lucifer was still staring, "Yes, it was a bit revealing, not just for Rory but for the Detective. Not to mention, if I ever see you in any situation I was in, I'll most likely scorch the Earth."
"No danger in that, Father." She replied, "I doubt it will ever happen."
Chloe looked at Lucifer, "Remember when we had like a hundred of your former lovers come to the station? Yeah, I knew about you then and we weren't even dating at the time." She smiled, "I chose you anyway."
"Oh, come on... Still, gross." Rory chimed.
Sunshine hung her head again. Lucifer could see how terrible she felt. "I'm sorry, I do tend to get carried away."
"Right, this conversation went in a very different direction. How 'bout we change the subject then."
"Oh please, yes!" Rory exclaimed
The conversation shifted to Chloe's memories as they finished dinner. When they were done, Rory and Shimmer started to make their way to Rory's room so Sunshine could shower and try on some clothes. Having again, being given the warning not to touch Sunshine's skin.
"Wait, Can I do her hair? Does that count as touching skin?" Rory asked.
Lucifer remembered when he first touched her, it was on the head, no images came. "Give it a try, in front of me, just in case."
She bowed her head to her sister, and Rory, with trepidation, placed her hand on top of her sisters head and ran her fingers through her hair. No images. "Okay, we're all good, no freaky Dad moments to scar the rest of my life."
"Oh, Ha Ha..." He replied. "Go have fun you crazy kids."
Rory looked at Sunshine, "Kids?" They were both laughing as they left the room.
Lucifer and Chloe cleared the plates and began to discuss the next steps for Sunshine and her learning to control her abilities. Chloe, after making a list of what they figured out, went to shower and change, needing to relax.
Lucifer poured himself another scotch and waited for the fashion show that would be Rory playing dress up with her sister. It was then that Amenadiel entered the room, hands behind his back.
"You'll never learn to knock, will you?" Lucifer snapped in a joking manner.
Amenadiel looked worried, "Luci, did you take Sunshine to Earth?"
"Why yes, I did as a matter of fact." He turned to face his brother, scotch glass now in hand. "Was I supposed to get your permission first?", the sarcasm flowing from his lips.
"Luci, she apparently touched the ground and left these behind." Amenadiel moved his hands in front of him, in them were several white and gold flowers. Far larger than any flowers either of them had ever seen.
Draining his glass, Lucifer's eyes went wide, "My word, she can do that too? Lovely. We shall have to add that to the list."
"No, not lovely. These are not just flowers, Luci. Do you not see they have the power of the Divine? They cannot be allowed to exist on Earth, what if someone found them?" His voice growing loud. "Wait, what list?"
"Well Brother, I am sorry, but I hadn't realized that her bare feet could grow Divine flowers! She's just as new to this as I am." Lucifer shot back as he headed to the bar. "It's not like there is a clothing shop in Hell I could have taken her to. I didn't even think about it until we were there." He poured another glass.
Amenadiel looked to the flowers and to Lucifer, "Do you understand what this means? We don't know what will happen if she goes back. If she can do this, then maybe she is as dangerous as Father thought. What else can she do that we're not aware of?"
"Well, from what I saw, she cries diamond tears when she's sad and pearls when they're tears of joy. Oh, and her blood turns to rubies if the drops hit the floor. She also plays the piano like it's part of her. Gets that from her Dad I guess." He pointed to the flowers Amenadiel placed on the piano, "And, apparently she can create Divine flowers from her bare feet." It was at that moment Lucifer felt his heart sink when he realized that Sunshine had walked into the room, now dressed in Rory's clothes. She had been listening. He felt her pain and saw her in her mind, calling herself a monster. "Oh, Child."
"They are not just flowers, they are Brugmansia, also known as Angel Trumpets. A flower that is both beautiful and poisonous." She met his eyes, tears welling up, "No, don't." She put her hand up to stop Lucifer from approaching. "It's okay Father. I know what I am, I know I shouldn't exist. I have too many gifts, I can do too many things it seems. I was never supposed to be, at least not like this." She looked to her hands and let out a sigh, "Maybe I should just go back to a room where I can't hurt anyone." She was in so much pain, diamond tears cracking against the floor, "Thank you for everything you gave me, but Amenadiel is right, I'm not worth it, I never was. I'm dangerous, I AM a monster! I know you don't want me to say it but, what would you have me believe? Amenadiel thinks I am, The All-Father told me I was, made me believe I was." She looked at Lucifer, tears now streaming harder down her cheeks, more diamonds on the floor, "Will you eventually see me like that Father? Because if you have any doubt, any at all, I would rather you destroy me than leave me in that kind of pain again."
He scoffed at this, "I would never. You are not a 'Monster' and there will be no more of this destroying talk, understand?"
He took his eyes away from his daughter, "Brother, it would be wise for you to not be near me right now." Lucifer's fury was growing. "Making my child feel like this, was that what you wanted? Is that the deal you made with Father? Let her out then take her from me?" His eyes were bright red. "Or was your intention to destroy her for Father because he was too much of a coward to do it himself?"
"I would never harm her Luci. I also made no deal with Father, he has no control over anything that goes on here anymore. We just need to be careful. We need to know what else she can do."
"No? You wouldn't harm her? What do you think that was for her, a loving pep talk?" He looked upon her face again, "Tell me, Brother, why all the fear I see in you?" Lucifer calmed, "Look at her, look at the hurt you just caused. Is that what a God is supposed to do?" He walked to his daughter and she allowed him to take her hands, when she felt his touch, his love, her wings opened.
The shirt on her back tore open. She quickly let go of her father and covered herself, "Well then, I guess that's why I shouldn't cover my back."
She saw the shock on her father's face. Both Amenadiel and Lucifer had never seen wings do this before. They shouldn't do that. She saw this in his thoughts.
"Ah, okay. Go find something else to put on, tell Rory what happened. See if she has something open backed, she'll understand." Lucifer sent her a mental message 'keep listening and let me know what you want.'
'Yes Father.'
"Luci, what was that? How did she do that?"
"Bloody Hell. One more thing to add to the list." He looked to his brother, "She told me when I suggested new clothes that she has only ever worn that dress, that she's always had her back exposed. Then again, she also didn't know she could fold her wings away either. Father didn't teach her a damn thing." He was angry, "Look, I know she's different, but one can only hope she can be shown how to use her abilities without harm. This is why she fears touching anyone."
"You have no problem touching her."
Lucifer, knew there was no way around it, and told him the entire story. "I have come to understand that she has seen everything I have ever done. Everything - as much as I wish she hadn't. Since we touched, I have been fine and I can touch her without it happening again." 'Cheeky Father' He heard in his head. He left out the part about being able to see her thoughts now, that they can communicate. "Though I don't think it wise that you touch her. Wouldn't want her to have that kind of power. Well now, that explains why Father never touched her."
'It would be a VERY bad idea for Amenadiel to touch me.' the thought from Sunshine came.
Amenadiel was worried, but relaxed a bit. "Luci, keep her here and at least try and get the wings under control. She can't go back to Earth if she's going to pop them out whenever she gets scared or angry or even blinks too hard, especially if she is around mortals. And get her some shoes."
'So Amenadiel, just like the All-Father is punishing me now? You should take me back to the room, Father.'
"I will do no such thing." He snapped back, "Not the shoes, I agree about those." He realized he was talking to Sunshine only he said it aloud and recovered, "I promised her we could go back when she had clothes, and I plan to keep my promise." He poured another drink, "I will admit, she'll need an open back sitch until we get the wings under control."
Amenadiel stared at him.
"Oh, What? Fine, I'll only take her at night, for the time being, secluded areas." He let out a sigh, "I can't imagine how the sun would shine off those wings, and we don't want to blind people, do we?"
"Luci, that isn't the point."
Lucifer scoffed at his brother, "So then, should I plan to take her somewhere safer for a day trip? North Pole maybe? That's nowhere near people. Would that be good for you?" He turned to his brother, "I refuse to keep her a prisoner here because you're afraid."
'He is afraid of me, isn't he? I told you, I am a monster.'
"That's not fair," Amenadiel looked to Lucifer, "She could cause a great deal of harm to humanity if she is that powerful, we need to be careful."
"My daughter is no Monster!" He shouted. Slamming the glass down, "And I will not have her believe that she is!" His eyes, now flashed red, "Not now, not ever again!"
'Father, please calm down, I am sorry.' The voice came to him softly in his head. 'Don't fight like this.'
Amenadiel walked to Lucifer, "I never said she was and I never would." His voice conveyed sadness, "This was Father's doing, not mine."
Lucifer, having heard his daughter plead with him, relaxed. "She has been through millennia down here, seeing everything I see, feeling everything I feel. Desperately trying to reach out to me. Waiting for someone to love her, to feel loved. Father made it so I couldn't hear her." He was becoming emotional, "He held her, right here, under my nose. Designed it, in his 'mysterious ways' so I would never know her. If that's not the biggest celestial bird he's ever given me, I don't know what is."
"Amenadiel, back so soon?" Chloe interrupted. Lucifer hadn't seen her come in and didn't know how much of the conversation she heard. "What did I miss?"
Lucifer scoffed, "Well, where shall I begin? Oh, I know, how about you tell her Almighty Amenadiel, you seem to have all the answers."
Amenadiel didn't speak.
"Why do I get the feeling that this is about Sunshine?"
"Oh-ho it very much is my dear." Lucifer turned back, pouring another glass of scotch, "Please Brother, tell the Detective what this is all about."
'Father don't do this to her, please stop all this fighting over me. I cause nothing but harm.'
The room went silent. With a deep sigh, Amenadiel began to tell Chloe about the flowers he found on Earth, he handed them to her. Then Lucifer telling him of her tears, her blood and watching her wings rip her clothes apart.
"Well we knew there were things we were going to have to learn," Chloe was concerned, but not at all afraid, "she has had no contact with anyone, ever. You have to give her time to understand, to grow. You can't just tell her she has to stay here. It would be punishment all over again. You might as well have left her in that loop."
'Chloe is right father.'
Lucifer sent his mind out to Sunshine, 'Come in here, please. Bring Rory.' He stood by the bar, back to both Chloe and Amenadiel. His glass still in his hand, turning it slowly on the counter. His heart pounding in his chest. Within moments, she entered the room, followed by Rory.
"Father?" Her voice was drowned with sorrow and he could feel it and she could feel his.
He turned, looking her in the eye, "Whatever shall we do now?"
"I know, she looks awesome, right?" Rory was happy with her choice of clothes for her sister.
She was now wearing a backless shirt, tight jeans and boots. "I guess I'm causing problems, aren't I?" She sighed, "I told you Father, why should I be allowed to continue to exist if this is what happens? It would have been better had the All-Father destroyed me when he destroyed my mother. If he had, none of this would be happening right now. If the All-Father hadn't manipulated things, everyone would still feel safe."
Rory was stunned, "What?"
Chloe welled with tears, "The pain this child feels - it's all she has known. Her only good memories are her Father's memories."
"You are not causing problems, and please stop talking like that." Lucifer himself was near tears, feeling her pain, "Brother, you should leave."
"Luci-"
He cut off his brother quickly, "I said Leave!" Lucifer's voice had hit a volume that made the walls shake. His pain for his daughter reaching a height.
At this volume, Sunshine's wings turned a deep red/gold and pushed out full. Her eyes as well, raged with the red/gold colour of anger. Rory ran to her mother, shielding her, knowing this could be bad.
Seeing this, Lucifer panicked, calmed himself and went to her. "No, No, NO, NO! It's okay, it's okay, we're okay. Look at me, please," He took her hands and looked her in the eyes, "please, breathe. Don't do that - Don't let it consume you."
Sunshine, obeying her Father, relaxed her rage. The colour in her eyes now returned to their normal wheat-gold, her wings relaxed and came back to white/gold. She looked around, confused, "What just happened?" She was shaking and had no recollection of the incident. She held on to her Father's hands, breathing now slowed to normal.
"It appears that Lucifer got so mad that you felt his rage, became his rage." Chloe was just guessing, but that's what it looked like.
"What?" She was stunned. "I didn't see any of that, how is that possible?"
Rory, not one to be easily frightened, had chills. "Dude, that was beyond scary."
"That's what I was talking about." Amenadiel said, and left.
Lucifer looked to Chloe, "Honey, can you and Rory give us a moment, please?"
"Yes, take your time."
Sunshine was so confused, "Father, did Amenadiel do something to me? Why did I lose connection with you? Why is Rory afraid of me now? Did I hurt her?" She began to shake.
Lucifer had no idea how to explain what happened, he too, seemed to just block it out. "Well, it would seem I let the darker side of myself go a little too far and you picked up on it. Your wings and eyes changed colour to a red/gold, and I needed to calm you down." He sighed, "That was entirely my fault, I didn't know what would happen if it lasted any length of time."
She was stunned. 'Told you I was...'
"Do not finish that statement!" Lucifer said aloud, his voice stern, but not threatening.
She let go of Lucifer's hands, walked to his piano and sat down. "Amenadiel does not like me, he does not trust me, and does not want me here. Now Rory is afraid of me too."
Lucifer, having heard this, poured himself another drink, turned to his daughter, then poured her one too. "Rory is not afraid of you. She went through the same thing once upon a time." He took it to her and placed it on the piano.
"She fears for you father, she thinks I will harm you."
"No, darling," he said, "she thinks you will harm yourself."
She dared not touch the keys without permission, she just wanted to be near it. Lucifer, having seen her thoughts, asked her to play. She looked up at him, as if questioning his permission. She took a quick drink, he nodded, and she began to play.
Hearing the piano, Chloe and Rory returned, "She plays so beautifully, what song is this?" Chloe whispered.
Lucifer smiled, "Chopin, Nocturne in C sharp minor. It's heavenly, isn't it? I'm glad it calms her." Though she couldn't project images to the walls, he did see them in her mind. She only saw him, his beauty, his love and also his anger. It's all she's ever known. It is going to take some time for him to get the anger part of her under control. He was familiar, having dealt with it himself. He will take an eternity helping her if it was all he ever did or would ever do.
She too, saw his mind. Saw that love, that devotion. Even as she played she knew he would help her like he helped Rory. She would be able to be normal.
'You are normal, for a super-powered Angel that is. Remember, I am your father after all. I do remember your mom, I remember that night very well. You are just as beautiful as she was.' The though came to her, she could see his memories.
The song now ended, she reached for the scotch glass and drained it. Lucifer was at her side refilling it quickly.
"That was incredible." Chloe said. "You play as beautifully as your father. Just another wonderful trait you adopted from him. Did Rory tell you she plays Guitar?"
"Yes, I was listening to her play when she gave me clothes to try on. If she plays in front of me long enough, I should be able to play guitar with her as well." Sunshine's eyes glowed a vibrant gold.
'Happiness' Lucifer thought. 'Gold is happiness.'
Shimmer looked to her father, 'I guess, I mean, I can't see my own eyes.'
He laughed, 'I suppose not.'
"You can learn how to play guitar just by listening and watching me?" Rory asked.
"Yes, that's how I learned to play piano, through Father. Prior to me playing with Father in the room I was in, I had never actually touched a piano."
"Remarkable." Lucifer smiled at her. "Right. Back to the current situation. Where do we start?"
Chloe looked to the list she started making, "Well, I doubt we can change the tears, the blood. Though she seems to be able to change her wings on her own depending on her mood, or yours." She pointed to Lucifer.
"And the eyes," Lucifer ran through what they knew, "but the flowers." He uttered, "Why, flowers?" He looked to his daughter.
"I have no idea, it was the first time I ever touched ground that wasn't either the Silver City or Hell. I've never seen them for real, just in your mind." She replied.
He tried to think where he saw them, "Angel's Bells?" He scoffed, "Not really my style. Maybe they were planted at one the homes I owned? I never did care for the landscaping aspect of things, but one never knows."
"Well, the name, the fact that they are pretty and poisonous, so they are like you Father. Both beautiful and dangerous, I guess that's the flower my body sees you as?" She was more questioning than answering.
"Well, I suppose." He drained his glass.
"I've also never had shoes, so how was I supposed to know I could do that?"
He looked at her, "Well then, how do we test that theory with you having shoes on?"
"Duh," Rory said, "Fly back up and try."
"No, that's not a good idea." He replied.
'Amenadiel said he didn't want me leaving here.' The smile erased from her face when she sent the thought to her Father.
'I don't care what he wants.' came his reply.
"Dad?" Rory asked, "Uncle A never said I couldn't take her."
Lucifer looked at her with a smile, "Cheeky Monkey. You're right."
"I don't think that's a good idea Lucifer," Chloe said, "He said you should keep her here."
"Right, so how do you suppose we try and work on the problem Detective, if we can't work on the problem?" He was staring at her. Searching for any answer. "Mm? Nothing?"
"Can we bring earth soil down here, or is that not a thing?" Sunshine asked. "I have no idea how any of this works, so, I'm just guessing."
He looked at the room around him, "If I can bring down enough scotch to get the world drunk, I should be able to bring down a box of dirt." 'Maybe'
'Couldn't hurt to try.'
"I'll do it," Rory offered, "how much should I get?"
"As much as I appreciate your enthusiasm Rory, this act of willful disobedience should fall on me and me alone." Lucifer didn't know if the Earth would even survive the trip down in the same state. He would need to make sure that what he took had living flowers or grass on it. He opened his wings and flashed off before anyone could stop him.
"How much trouble are we going to be in for this?" Sunshine asked, wings fluttering quickly.
Both Rory and Chloe shrugged.
It wasn't long before Lucifer was back, with a very large container of Earth that he dropped on the floor. "Well, the flowers and the grass are still alive, so the trip here didn't kill them." He reached his hand out to Sunshine to help her into the container, "Keep the shoes on, and let's see."
She stepped into the soil, stayed a few minutes at her father's request, and he helped her climb out. They waited, no flowers appeared.
"Take off the shoes and socks and do it again." She followed her father's request, and again, he helped her back in. After some time passed, she was again helped out. Within seconds, the Angel Trumpets appeared.
"Try it with the socks?" Rory asked. After wiping her feet off, she tried again, no flowers.
Chloe spoke up, "Okay, so it's just her bare feet that cause the flowers to grow. Good to know." She started making notes in her book.
'Father, did anyone check the hall I walked down to get here? What if there are flowers growing down here?'
'Right. Well, never thought of that, did I? I guess I'll pop out and take a look, shall I.'
Lucifer walked to the door, noticing this, Chloe inquired, "Where are you going now?"
"Need to see something, Darling. Won't be long." as he rushed out the door.
Stepping into the hall he expected to see Angel Trumpets everywhere, instead he was met with a wondrous site. Overwhelmed with it's beauty he went back to the room to gather the others.
Chloe greeted him, "Everything okay?"
He was smiling, "Yes Darling." He replied, then continued, "Sunshine, put your shoes back on, would you please? I need you all to come with me." She did as he requested.
Ever the skeptic, Rory spoke up. "What happened?"
"Please," he held up his hand, "just please. Come with me."
'You should tell them, it's going to be a shock.' The voice came as she zipped up the boots. She has already seen it, knows what she has done.
He walked to the door, preventing them from leaving ahead of them. "This is not what you'd expect to see, especially in Hell, yet here it is." He walked through the door, everyone followed.
They were met with an incredible sight. The hall Sunshine had walked down had changed, and not just the Angel Bells where her feet had touched the ground. The walls were now a brilliant white, the cold black stone of the walkway became a soft tuft of thick green grass. Vines of brilliant green crawled the walls covered in the most wondrous of small red, white and gold flowers. No ash fell in the area, not like the other halls. The air seemed sweeter, cleaner. There was a shining light that rose up, punching a hole through the thick darkened clouds to the clear blue sky above.
"Woah." Rory reached out and cradled one of the flowers in her hand. No images or unusual things happened. "They are so pretty. What are they?"
"Lilly of the Valley" Sunshine spoke, "Though they are normally only white and grow on the ground, I guess I can make them in colours. And apparently make them grow from vines. Also, they are poisonous.
Rory snatched her hand back.
"Only if they are eaten, Rory." Though there were still doors to people's rooms, Sunshine was concerned, 'Are the Hell Loops intact or did I mess those up too?'
Looking to her with concern, he addressed the others, "Ah, yes. Right. Stay here, I need to check on something." He walked to one of the doors, one he knew well, and entered.
Coming back out of the room he looked to everyone, "The loop is intact, it would seem. This," he waived his hand at his new surroundings, "did not change them."
Chloe looked at him, puzzled, "Can you be sure?"
"I can assure you, Detective, nothing has changed in that Loop. She only seems to have an effect on the outside, not the rooms themselves." He was looking around, it reminded him of Earth and it was absolute beauty.
It was then that Lucifer noticed something beyond strange. "Now that is odd."
Rory was still lost in the beauty when she she finally spoke, "You should check another, just in case."
"Well I'll be damned," He couldn't take his eyes off the image, "it's a butterfly."
They all focused on what Lucifer was looking at, all but Sunshine. She was now truly afraid.
Lucifer looked around, "If anything had changed, the doors would have disappeared. Look, just look around, still here, still suffering."
She shot him a glaring look.
"Uh, Fine. Fine." He opened another door and walked in. Same torment, same pain. No change. He returned to his family in the hall. "No change. Same screaming as always."
"Lucifer, this may be the reason why your father put her here." Chloe had that look she gets when she's figured out a case, and he saw it. "That's why her door was open. Maybe she was supposed to get out, to make your Hell into," she waived her hand, "this."
He scoffed at this notion, "Chloe, Hell is not supposed to be beautiful, it's, well, Hell."
"Yes, for the people trapped in their guilt, but the people inside the rooms never see the halls." She took his hands, "Only you and other Angels, well - and the Demons, but you are the Ruler here. If you want to change it, you can."
He shook his head, "I- I don't know what to make of any of this." His eyes scanned his surroundings, butterflies in Hell? "Amenadiel is really not going to like this. To be honest, I thought he would be here by now." He looked around, half expecting to see Amenadiel standing there.
All this time, Rory was starting to feel a bit forgotten. All she could do was time-travel and that was a one-time thing. She had no cool abilities. Sunshine had lots of them, so it seems. She had all of Lucifer's attention, he was taken with her in a way Rory never was.
'Father, Rory looks sad. I think she feels left out.'
"Rory darling, maybe you should take Sunshine back inside. Between the two of you I'm sure there's plenty of songs you could play. Or maybe, have some girl time." He walked over to Rory, gave her a hug and whispered in her ear, "She could use a sister right now. Let your mother and I have some time to talk."
"Yeah, sure." Rory gestured to Sunshine and they went back inside. She didn't sound happy at all.
'I'm sorry. I got overwhelmed, I know.'
Chloe was looking at all the flowers, gently touching them. She was captivated by how they shined in such a dark place. "Lucifer, I cannot believe the things that child is able to do."
He, too was in awe of her ability, though it did make him concerned, "And you think Amenadiel will just allow this to remain?" Hands extended, he scoffed, shaking his head, "Just for this alone he will try to find a way to control her." His heart was pounding, he was frightened for his daughter, frightened for Chloe, for Rory. He didn't care what happened to him, "I don't want her getting hurt."
'I told you I should not have come out of that room. The All-Father was right.' He could hear her internal weeping.
'No, he wasn't right, and what you did here is wondrous. If it were up to me, all the halls would be like this.'
"Lucifer, we need to show this to Amenadiel. He needs to know." Chloe spoke up.
"Why? Why would he care? Nay, why should he care?" He snapped. "Not like my father ever came down here while I was walking the halls for eons."
As if on cue, Amenadiel appeared, stunned at what he saw. "Unbelievable." Even the Almighty Amenadiel could never create such a sight in Hell. He looked up the columns to see the light cutting through the dark sky. "She was able to do this Luci?"
"Brother, I know what you're thinking, and I had no idea her bare feet would have changed the halls. We only looked because of the Angel Trumpets." Lucifer tried to keep his voice calm. "It doesn't happen if she's wearing shoes. We checked. And the Loops haven't been effected."
"Luci, that is a butterfly."
Sighing, Lucifer looked to him, "Mmm, I know."
"It is magnificent, Luci, what if she was put here because of this?" Amenadiel reached out and touched one of the flowers, he felt overwhelming love. Not just pure love and light, love for Lucifer and wanting to make him happy. "What if she was created to do this?"
"Not exactly the answer I was expecting, Brother." Lucifer stared at him, "So, What? So you believe Father trapped her in a loop for millennia to what? To- to turn Hell into a garden? You must be joking."
"Yes. I think that's exactly why."
Scoffing, Lucifer continued, "Then why did Father keep her from me for so long? Why hide her here? Had I known, I never would have left her!"
"Luci, don't you see? You were supposed to leave Hell, and everything that followed." Amenadiel said. "It's how you found Chloe, it's why you had Rory, it's why you came back to find your true calling."
"Amenadiel, Lucifer rules down here, so if he chose to do this, would it change anything up above?" Chloe interjected, "Like he said, the rooms have not been effected, only the halls."
"I only knew about it because Sunshine asked me to come here. She prayed for me to see it. This may have been Father's plan all along." Amenadiel replied. "It's changed nothing up above."
He glared at Amenadiel, "She did what?"
"Luci, listen, you didn't know your true calling until recently. Maybe when you came back to help these lost souls was the time she was supposed to be ready to help you."
'Come out here.' His voice went out to Sunshine. She could hear the disappointment in his voice, 'Yes, Father.'
"Rory, Father wants me out there. Will you please join us?" She looked to her sister, "I fear that Amenadiel is about to put me back in a Loop. If he does, I would like to say goodbye properly."
Rory stared at Sunshine, her face now showing genuine concern. "Why would he do that? Because of the Halls?"
"I believe so. I guess that's how I am dangerous. It appears I may have broken Hell."
"Woah. That's not good." Rory started walking toward the door.
Sunshine was lost in her thoughts, completely absorbed in the conversation her father was having. She was very afraid. Amenadiel said it may be the reason she was here, but she was seeing her father, remembering how often he had been wronged. Her wings were shivering, not fluttering. They were dipped low, she felt shame.
They made their way to where Lucifer, Amenadiel and Chloe were talking. All the while Lucifer could feel the fear in Sunshine, see that she was prepared to be taken back to a room forever.
Amenadiel spoke to her first, "I didn't expect you to ask me here, but I see now the beauty that is in you." He looked around, "If this is the gift that both your mother and father have given you, then I believe you should use it."
'Is this a trap father?'
'No Child, he is serious.'
She looked at Amenadiel for some time, "You are not here to take me away?"
"No," he let out a small laugh, "not at all." Amenadiel smiled at her. "In fact, I want you to bring your shine to the halls. It does not effect the rooms, so why shouldn't you bring all this beauty," his hands touched the flowers again, "to the place your family calls Home."
She looked to her Father, "Is this what You want Father? I will not do this without you giving permission. If you say no, I will obey. I will always obey."
Rory looked at her, "Bold statement."
"She cannot lie, Rory." Lucifer looked to her, "Unlike you, and I have no idea why you would choose to do that."
"Dude, harsh." She snapped.
Lucifer looked to her, "I'm sorry. That was cruel. Sunshine has been living through my eyes since birth. That's why she is so much like me."
Rory stared at Lucifer, "We're all different Dad, that's what makes us all special." She smiled, "Sunshine told me that."
"Take off the boots and the socks Sunshine." Amenadiel said, "Go take a walk with your Family down the Halls."
"Brother, are you sure of this?"
Amenadiel was smiling, "You deserve this Luci, and as God, who's to say that Hell can't be a beautiful place? After all, you are here to help damned souls cross over. What better way than to have this," he waved his hand, "to remind you of that?"
"Who are you and what did you do with Amenadiel?" He joked.
Sunshine had not removed her boots, she was still waiting for her father's permission. "What would you have me do?"
"Take them off. Apparently Amenigod said it will be fine."
She removed her boots and socks and took her father's hand. "Shall we?"
Chloe and Rory followed several paces behind them. Giving them space.
As they walked down the halls, the atmosphere changed. The air was so clean, the columns turned a brilliant white. The sky, opening up, became a bright blue. Flowers and vines climbed the walls and grass grew like a thick carpet on the floor. A Demon, that had never actually touched the beauty of such things seemed curious. He leaned out of the Loop door, touched the grass and was petting it like a cat. No images of love or light came to him.
Lucifer, having seen this paused their walk and inquired, "What did you see?"
"See, My King?"
"When you touched the grass, what did you see?"
"I didn't see anything My King. I just wondered what it was."
Lucifer excused the Demon, "Very well, back to work."
He had not let go of Sunshine's hand the entire time. He turned to speak to Chloe and Rory, "It would seem that her changes have no effect on the Demons either. So, that's a bit of good news."
"Lucifer, maybe we shouldn't put Sunshine through so much in one day."
Looking at her closely, Lucifer realized Chloe seemed concerned for her well-being. "You have become quite the Mother-figure haven't you?"
"Actually, that was my idea." Rory spoke up. "Mom would have let you roam around forever, but look at her Dad," she pointed to Sunshine's wings as he turned, "she is getting weak. She's holding your hand and her wings aren't shining."
"What?" He looked truly frightened, "My dear girl, what have I done?"
"Father I am fine, I think I just need to rest." She was tired, more tired than she had ever been, "We have come a long way, can you fly me back? I don't know if I can fly, or even walk back right now."
"Rory, can you take Chloe back, please?"
Rory let out her wings and picked up her mother, "See you back at home."
He turned to Sunshine, "Fold your wings away." She did as he requested, and he took her in his arms, "Why didn't you say anything to me?"
She looked at him with a sadness, "I wanted to make you happy. Now I just want to sleep. I am so weary, Father."
He flew her off, back to her own penthouse and placed her on her bed. He could see the sleep in her eyes, their colour almost paled. She lay down, "Right, well let me tuck you in," he pulled the soft blanket around her, "now rest and," tapping his head, 'just let me know when you want me to come back.'
She gave a tired smile, 'Yes Father.'
Lucifer left his daughter's apartment and returned to Chloe. She was pacing the room, "Is she okay?"
He walked over and hugged her, "Yes, of course. She just needs time to adjust." He poured himself a glass of scotch drained it and removed his jacket. Refilling the glass, he sat down at his piano and began to softly play, knowing that the music would help soothe Sunshine, maybe even help her to sleep.
After her father left her, she crawled to the edge of the bed and removed the clothes Rory had given her. She moved back to the center of the bed, face down, and extended her wings. She drew the soft blanket over her legs, up to the small of her back and around the sides of her body. She could hear her father play the piano now, her wings began shimmering and grew to fall off the side of the bed, brushing the floor. She was fully relaxed, and within moments, fell off to the first true sleep of her life.
Lucifer woke early, Chloe's arm draped over his chest. He did not know if he had dreamed what happened, it seemed so real. He slipped out of the bed and wrapped his robe around himself. He walked to the bar and poured a drink. Then the voice came - 'Morning Father.'
He nearly dropped the glass. "Bloody Hell!" he shouted aloud. He looked around the room, he was alone.
'In your head, Father. You didn't dream it. Can you come see me? I don't know how to get to you from my room.'
"It was real - that means, everything that..." he trailed off and recovered. "Just go to the door in your closet and walk through, it's attached to my door."
'You don't have to talk out loud when I'm not there.' she responded as she walked through her door and into the front door of his penthouse. "Well, I know how to do that now."
His eyes fell to her, wings so large they brushed they floor as she walked. She was truly beautiful. She had both his height and his build, slender but tone. However her eyes, her skin - just like her mother's. He hadn't realized he had been staring and remembering until she spoke again.
"Thank you, father." She smiled and blushed at his memories.
He shook off the revery, "I hope you slept well, my dear." He poured her a drink and refilled his. Still fully taken by the size of her wings.
"I did, and thank you for tucking me in. I have never had a rest like that, it was wondrous." she took a large pull from the glass. "I was fully prepared to never wake up."
"It was the least I could do. After all, you did make part of Hell a beautiful place." his memories of that beautiful sight came to the forefront of his mind. "Wait, you thought you were going to die when I put you to bed?"
She tilted her head at him, "Yes, I did. I was also fine with it, knowing I was able to see you, hold you, tell you who I am - yes. I thought I was done." Her smile grew wide, "Then I awoke to feeling as if everything was going to be alright. I was safe, and no one was going to take me from you."
He put his glass down and walked over to her. "No one will ever take you from me." He reached up and cradled her cheek in his palm. He kissed her gently on the forehead, "We have so much more to learn about you."
"I have so much to learn about me, too."
Chloe had woken up and was watching the exchange from the bedroom. When they moved out of her eye-line she got out of bed and dressed. Meeting them in the common area with a smile. "Good morning you two."
"Morning Mother." Sunshine's wings gave a flutter.
"So, Chloe can do that to you too?" Lucifer asked.
"Ever since she touched me, but it doesn't happen all the time, not like you." She looked to her father, "I would love to be able to touch Rory, but I don't want her to have to see everything you've done. Like she said, she didn't want to be scarred for life."
Chloe looked to Sunshine, "She left after Lucifer took you to go sleep. She wanted to say goodbye, but we thought it best for you to just rest up. There will be plenty of time for you two to get to know each other."
"Am I going to make the Halls pretty today? Like yesterday?" She was hoping they could walk together again. She liked it.
"Maybe later." He said. "Right. Well, I should go get dressed." he stated as he walked to his room. "I have patients to see today, and - Hello. Maybe you should come with us." He pointed to Sunshine. "Learn a bit of how I do my job. You did say you wanted to help. Did you not?"
She was all smiles, "I would love to see you work! I will keep quiet, or try at least."
"Sunshine, I go to sessions with Lucifer all the time, remember when he met with Dr. Linda? It's exactly like that, only he's the 'doctor' now."
"Well, that's settled then. Be just a tic." He went to dress as the ladies continued to talk. He returned perfectly dressed and handsome as always. He walked to Sunshine and handed her a flask. "This, my dear, is for you."
Chloe shot him a look, "Lucifer, really?"
"What? She's an adult, she deserves to have something pretty." He smiled at her, "Now, pick a bottle and fill it up." He pulled his flask out of his jacket and went to the bar. She followed, filling from the same bottle he did. He slipped his into his jacket, she tucked hers into her back pocket.
"I guess that will have to work for now. I don't have anywhere else to keep it." She winked at Chloe.
"Wonderful. Let's get to work, shall we?" He motioned to the staircase in the corner of the penthouse. She tucked her wings away and followed him.
They walked to the top of the stairs, Lucifer leading the way. At the top, a door appeared, he opened it and they walked in.
"Woah - this IS Dr Linda's office!" Sunshine exclaimed. "This is where you see the tortured souls?"
He looked at her, "I thought you saw everything I saw? You never saw me working in here?"
She was shaking her head, "No. Does this room operate like a Loop? If it does, that may explain some things. I couldn't see you or hear your thoughts when you went through the doors. I only learned the information if you chose to remember it."
Chloe, sitting down, took out her notepad and made another note in her list of "Sunshine" qualities. "One more thing to add to the list."
Lucifer collected his notebook and pen and readied himself for the first soul. "Do you want a chair, or would you prefer to stand, for now?"
"I will stand, Father. Back here." she moved to the far corner behind her father but still within his eye-line.
"Very well." He walked to the door, and a soul came into the room.
She watched for some time as Lucifer spoke to several souls that day. Pulling softly from the flask he provided her, she could see why he found this so fulfilling. Even though she could feel their suffering, she also could see that they wanted to put things right. Make peace with their past, attone. They just couldn't figure out how. Her returned the current soul to his loop and was preparing for the next when she spoke. "Father, I think I understand now. Can I try speaking with one of them?"
"After watching just a few souls? Sunshine, these are not even the worst infractions we have down here, I'm not sure it would be wise." He saw her feelings, she truly did want to help. "Okay. Okay, I'll bring in one soul for you, but please," he said tapping his head, "listen for instructions, just in case."
At the sight of his happiness, she smiled. Her wings popped out, "Thank you, Father. I will try and do you proud."
Lucifer walked out the door and came back with a soul. Sunshine was unaware of the type of infraction this man had committed, but could sense he had done some very bad things.
"Sit Randolph." His voice was stern, and the man complied. "Right, well you've been naughty, haven't you dear Randolph?"
The man looked around the room, pointing at the Angel still standing in the corner, he questioned, "Wha- what is this?" Her wings, so bright, flowing to the floor captivated him.
Sunshine looked at the man, speaking slowly and softly, "Randolph, I am the Angel sent here to guide you. Only you can get yourself out of Hell. As long as you are honest with yourself Randolph, you can stop your suffering. You know you are the only one that can." Her head swaying ever slightly side to side like a cobra, putting the man in a sort of trance. Her eyes turned a brilliant gold as she spread her wings slightly. She was now looking him in the eye, even from her distance, he could not stop looking. She stepped closer, never taking her eyes from his, "Remember your guilt Randolph..., can you feel that guilt... deep within you Randolph..., apologize to everyone for your wrongdoings Randolph..." The pregnant pauses in her statement made the man well up in tears. Her wings widened out further, the shine nearly blinded him.
He fell to his knees in front of her but never broke eye contact, "Please, please forgive me... I... am..." his voice began to trail off.
Lucifer had never expected such a thing from this soul. He had been down here for a very long time. He was accused of the most horrific deeds in his life, and she had him in tears.
She leaned in to speak softly mere inches from his face, "Feel all that pain you have caused Randolph..., make right the wrongs you have done..., ask for forgiveness... and then you will be free."
Randolph spoke to her, "I am to blame for what I've done. I'm so sorry - please - please, forgive me what I have done... everyone, please forgive me." Tears streaming down his face. Within moments he was gone.
"He is free." Sunshine was smiling. "Did I do it right, Father?"
Lucifer's mouth was agape. "What just happened? Did he just- Wait, he made it?" He was shocked, he had never seen a soul free itself from a room without using a door. He knows that they were able to free themselves from their Loops, with therapy, but this...
Sunshine saw his thoughts, "You are disappointed in me? I did it wrong?"
"What? No, no. I just have no idea how you managed to get through to him so quickly. How he managed to cross over just by speaking to you for a few minutes." He was still dumbstruck.
Chloe had not said a word, she made notes in her notebook as fast as she could. Detailing Sunshines exchange with the man. "Lucifer, her wings. Her wings are out, you always see souls with your wings in. That, and she kept repeating his name. Maybe that was the difference?"
"She did that eye thing again - I can't do that." He looked to her, "And what do my wings have to do with this?"
"She said everything you say to them, the only difference is, her wings are out, she never broke eye contact and kept saying his name. You need to try that - get one more soul. Take your wings out, hers go away. It's the only way we will know for sure."
He trusted her judgement, but didn't really believe it would work. "Fine. Fine." He chose another soul, worse than Randolph and brought him into the room. Motioning for the soul to seat himself, he moved in front of him and opened his wings. The soul behaved in the same way - transfixed, and remembering the speech his daughter gave, he repeated it. Just like the previous soul, the same thing happened. He broke down - then was gone. "Well I'll be damned. It was right there in front of me the entire time, and I never thought of it."
He turned to his daughter, "Looks like this has become quite the family business. Maybe we should see if Rory would like to help out."
"I say you two have done enough for the day." Chloe looked like a proud mom, "I guess we can go home for dinner and maybe some beautiful music?"
"Excellent idea! A celebration is in order." He pulled out his flask and took a drink. "We must tell Rory, I have to have her come to therapy and try this. We can free three times the souls in a day." He was glowing. "This is marvelous."
"So I did well?" Sunshine half-asked.
He took her hand, "Oh yes my dear. You did wonderfully." They made their way back to the penthouse where Rory was already waiting.
"So, dragged Sunshine to therapy, huh?" Rory asked. "They did that to me once - it sucked. I was on Earth at the time, but still."
Sunshine smiled, "I got to free a soul!"
Rory looked at her, "What? How?"
"We'll talk about it over dinner. It was quite remarkable." Chloe spoke. "You could call it the biggest breakthrough he's ever made in therapy." She excused herself as she went to prepare dinner.
"I would admit, I had no idea the answer was right in front of me. If Sunshine hadn't asked to try, I never would have figured it out." Lucifer was walking on clouds. He was so proud of his daughter, she was just what he needed. "Rory, I want you to come with us tomorrow, I need to see if you can free souls too." If he was looking for the same enthusiasm it wasn't coming.
Rory seemed angry. "Yeah, I'm not the 'freeing souls' kind of Angel, so I'll pass."
"What do you mean?" He seemed hurt by her response. "You're my daughter, it should be just as easy for you as it was for your sister."
'Father stop. I think she is upset. She thinks I'm replacing her.'
'That's ridiculous, she is my daughter. She cannot be replaced.'
"I have no interest in this 'becoming part of a family business' routine" Rory spoke, "That's just not my style."
He looked to her, saddened that she didn't want to help. "As you wish. I'll not make you do what you feel is not your calling. Just thought you'd want to try it, at least once."
Sunshine, trying to break the tension spoke up, "I didn't know I could do it either. I just got to watch them for a while and followed what they did. It was kinda easy." She was hoping that her words would make her sister change her mind. "Most of those souls are just too stupid to know what to do. Humans really are not the smartest things, even houseplants don't have guilt. Dummies." She sent a fast thought to Lucifer, 'I just needed to say it in words she could relate to, let's see what happens.'
'Okay, I trust you.' Lucifer made his way to the bar and poured himself a drink, allowing the conversation between his daughters to blossom.
Rory laughed, "Well, duh. They're in Hell." She looked at her sister, "It was easy, huh? Maybe I will, just to try one. Don't want to make a job out of it. It kinda ruined my childhood and all."
'Good job, Sunshine!'
"You told him to do it, you silly!" She laughed at Rory, hoping to get her to in a better mood.
Rory began laughing too, "I didn't know that until I time-travelled, and wait - you know all this already!"
Sunshine smiled - "Duh."
Chloe called them for dinner. They sat down and talked in good nature. Mostly Lucifer telling Rory how her sister freed the soul and he tried it and it worked. Rory didn't seem all that interested, but maintained a smile through it all.
"Dad," Rory started, "take a look at your wings and Sunshine's. Then think about what mine look like." She waited, hoping for him to figure it out.
He looked at her, "Your wings are breathtaking."
She shook her head, "No Dad, it's not the same. My wings aren't the typical 'Hey, I'm an Angel' type of wings."
"Well, neither are Sunshine's." He said to her. "There are no typical 'Angel Wings'. We're all different, but we're still Angels."
"Please don't do this. Rory, if you don't want to try, you don't have to." Chloe spoke, trying to calm things down. "Your father just wants you to be part of his life, even this part."
Rory took her mother's hand, "I know mom, but just think about what I'm saying." She pointed to Lucifer and Sunshine, "They have wings that are bright and LOOK like they belong to an Angel. I look like-"
Lucifer cut her off, "MY ANGEL, my daughter." He smiled at her and gave her a wink.
"Your daughter, yes, but no Angel Dad." She looked saddened at the thought. "They may see my wings as another form of torture, and not a salvation. Can you see that?"
"You won't know until you try, Rory. Just because you don't think your wings look 'Angelic' doesn't mean that we don't or that other's will." Sunshine was trying to make her sister feel better.
Lucifer look at Rory and smiled, "Then maybe you can do a bit of torturing. Still part of the family business, I know, but maybe something you may like?"
Rory shot him a smile, "That might be fun."
"I let Maze babysit for you way too much." Chloe laughed, "But I'd be glad if we could find something you could do with the family. Scare them straight, then set them free."
"I like this." Sunshine was truly happy. "Can we go for a walk in the halls again? So I can make the flowers?" She looked around the table, "I promise not to do too much this time. We can fly to where we left off."
Lucifer looked at her and smiled, "As you wish."
They prepared themselves for the outing. Having full bellies and a nice time to relax. After removing her boots and socks they made their way to the halls. Picking up where they left off, they started to walk.
Lucifer was the first to notice not only the butterflies, but now birds. Birds like he has never seen before, brilliant in their colors, but small like a hummingbird. It was beyond beautiful.
Sunshine continued walking, projecting more images in her head of all the wondrous things she had seen through Lucifer's eyes. From behind him, Lucifer felt something brush up against his leg. He looked down, eyes wide, 'A Cat!'
She turned around quickly, "Isn't is pretty." It's beautiful sleek, black coat had a sheen like no other.
"Pretty?" He looked to her, she seemed to lose her smile. "Why would you think so?" The cat sat at his feet and looked up at him, wide eyes of brilliant gold. "It's judging me. Why is it judging me?"
She smiled at him, "She likes you."
He scoffed at the notion, "Contemptible creatures."
"Father, that is mean." The cat remained at his feet. "Just pet her."
"Oh for... fine." He leaned down, his hand stroked the silky fur. The cat seemed to fawn over him, eyes blinking slowly. "She is pretty, isn't she?"
Chloe was amazed. Lucifer hated cats. "Now THAT'S progress."
"Progress? Sunshine just broke Dad." Rory laughed.
In full Lucifer fashion he replied, "Oh, ha ha. I can change, just ask your mother."
Sunshine had continued walking, she was doing well, not like her first time. She came do one of the loop doors and froze. Her wings flared out, blinding white light flashed briefly. "This- this cannot be... THIS CANNOT BE!" The walls shook, as she let out the scream.
Lucifer ran to her, she was shaking, trembling. Her wings had grown too large, way to large. He placed his hands around her waist, "What is it? Please tell me, what is wrong?" Over and over she repeated, 'this cannot be', he felt helpless. "Rory take your mother and GO - NOW, PLEASE!"
Rory didn't wait for a reply from her mother, she grabbed her quickly and flew off.
He tried to calm Sunshine, begging and pleading for her to relax. He couldn't move her, it was as if she weighed more than the world. She was trembling, and just as soon as her screaming started, she went silent. She became limp in his arms, she was knocked out. He managed to lift her into his arms, she felt weightless now. Her large wings hanging down as he flew her back.
Coming into his chamber, he carried her to the bed and placed her gently down. Her wings, still exposed and still oversized, spilled over the bed and onto the floor. She was breathing steadily, calmly. He was shaking and welled with tears. He had such fear for her, he didn't know what happened or how he could fix it. He knew he was going to find out who was in that room.
"Lucifer, what happened?" Chloe's voice was full of concern, but she didn't want to push him. She could see the look on his face. He was crying, afraid for her.
He finally left his daughter's side and walked to Chloe. He wrapped his arms around her, she felt him cry. This was not like him at all. After a time he calmed, letting his hold of her go. She didn't try to make him talk. He went to the bar and poured a drink. He let out a long sigh and took a deep swallow. "I don't know what happened. I couldn't see her thoughts, but I did feel her pain. Tremendous pain." His voice was wavering, "I need to see who's in that room."
"Lucifer, she has never seen people, any people. What soul could have made her scream like that?" Chloe questioned.
"If I had to guess," he looked at her, tears still in his eyes, "Her Mum."
"But she said your dad destroyed her, how could she be here?" Chloe was so confused, "If she is connected to you and her mom, why couldn't she see her?"
"The Loops. She said as much." He looked at her, "She couldn't see me when I was inside the Loops, only the presence at the doors." He shook his head, becoming angry, "My father may not have destroyed her, he may have trapped her here, just like he did with Sunshine." Before Chloe could begin to respond, Lucifer held his hands in prayer. Within seconds, Amenadiel was behind him.
"This is becoming a habit with you, Luci." He started to joke, Chloe walked to away to be with Sunshine. It wasn't until Lucifer turned around that he knew something was wrong. "What's happened?"
"Brother, we may have a very delicate problem." He waived his hand to Sunshine laying on his bed.
Amenadiel walked to her, how large her wings had become, it was unreal. "Luci, what happened to her?"
Lucifer told him about the soul she set free and that he used the same technique and it worked. Amenadiel, having heard this, checked to see if the souls, in fact, were in heaven. He let Lucifer know they were, so she did nothing wrong there. "I don't understand Luci, that is a good thing."
"Yes, it was, and I was very proud of her." He continued to explain, "She wanted to walk the Halls again after dinner, so we did." He drained his glass, and poured another. "It was when she got to the door, Brother, it was a horrific sight." He sighed. Amenadiel could see he was visibly shaken. "She kept screaming - 'this cannot be' - over and over. I couldn't lift her off the ground, I couldn't help her." His voice was disturbingly calm. He was staring blankly, remembering more than actually trying to explain.
"Who was behind the door." Amenadiel spoke softly trying not to anger his brother.
He sighed, "I believe, it's her Mum."
"How is that possible, Luci? She said Father destroyed her mother."
Lucifer just shook his head. "I don't know. But I have to go in that room and find out now, don't I?" He looked his brother in the eye, "I don't want her to have to go in there."
"I'll go, Luci. Let me do this for you, for her."
"No, no, I can't ask you to do that. I have to do this. Just stay outside the door, please." He looked in on his daughter once more. Chloe had taken up watch in the chair beside the bed. "Please Chloe, keep an eye on her. I have to know what she saw, and I hope for her sake I am wrong." She gave him a hug, and he and Amenadiel left.
They came to the door, Lucifer could feel the soul inside but still couldn't see who it was. "I don't know how this is going to go, I've never been this unsure of going into a Loop before."
"Let me come in with you, it's not like you could stop me anyway."
"Fine. Just try not to do anything and if it is her - don't touch her. I'll know if it's her." He opened the door and they walked in. They were hit with the sound of screaming, a woman, heavy in child labor. They approached her, she didn't notice they were there. She continued, for what seemed hours, until the child was born. Within seconds, the child was taken from her. She was exhausted, yet her hands continued reaching for the child that was wrapped in a blanket and spirited away. Then she was back to her screaming, the Loop began again. She had been here for millennia, reliving this pain over and over again. Lucifer was crying, he felt so much pain for the woman, for his daughter. "Brother, It's Her, whatever am I to do?"
"What's her name Luci?"
"Moonlight, oddly enough."
Amenadiel looked at his brother, "Of course it is." He walked to the woman and spoke, "Sweet Moonlight, your child is safe. Your child lives. Your pain is over." The Loop stopped.
"Who are you?" The woman looked to him, then around the room, "Why can't I hold her? Why won't he let me see her?"
"Who do you think took your child?" Amenadiel asked calmly.
"God did." She stared at him, "He didn't want Lucifer to know, so he took her from me."
Amenadiel looked to the woman and smiled, "Your daughter is with Lucifer now and she is safe. She is happy to know him. She wants to know her mother, too."
"I cannot leave. I am trapped. He ripped the soul from my body and left me here to remember and re-live that pain over and over again." She was relaxed. "I cannot see my daughter, or Lucifer. How can I be with them if I am merely a soul?"
Lucifer stepped to her side, "Moonlight, I'm so very sorry for what was done to you. I can't make up for any of it. All I can do is try to be a good father to Sunshine."
She looked at him and began to cry, "You named her Sunshine? That's beautiful."
"She chose the name, because of the way I make her wings 'shimmer'. And she is beautiful, just like her mother."
She calmed herself, "Your father didn't want me to have her. He held me captive then he took her away because I planned... to take her back to my universe. He didn't want me to live, he just wanted the child and I was just a pawn."
"I'm so sorry for what he did." he explained. "You didn't deserve that. You're a beautiful woman and the mother of my child. She speaks of you all the time. Her memories are your memories. She has seen everything you have, everything I have. It is one of her many gifts. She is a beautiful woman now." Hearing his speech, she reached out and touched his hand, with that, the memories flooded between them.
She saw his life, he has another child, a partner. She was able to see her daughter as well, feel her complete happiness. She was now crying tears of joy, and smiling. "Why can't I hear her anymore?"
"Ah, Right. It's the Loop, she cannot see into them. I wanted to make sure it was really you before bringing her here. She was very upset when she got to your door. So much so that- well, le's just say, she passed out. I had to fly her back home and put her to bed. My wif- Chloe is watching over her now."
Amenadiel, hearing Lucifer for the first time almost refer to Chloe as 'Wife', smiled.
"Will I be able to see her? Should I?" She seemed worried. "She has your partner to be a mother to her, she has never had me. Maybe it's best if she not see me."
He stared at her, "I can't make that decision for her, it has to be her choice."
"You can change her Loop, Luci. Make it so Sunshine can at least come in and see her." He looked to his brother, "I cannot let her out, if I do, she goes back to her own Universe in death. She will not be able to stay in ours. Unless it's forever in a Loop."
Lucifer changed the Loop, turning it into a place he pulled from her mind. A place from her own home, it made her feel better. "Ah, now, as soon as I walk out that door, she will read my thoughts and know you're here. She'll want to see you, trust me on that." He was sure of it, "If she's awake."
"I don't want to cause trouble for your family." She was sincere. "Your wife is quite beautiful for a Human, and your daughter Rory is magnificent for a Nephilim."
Lucifer had never once referred to Rory as such. Although Chloe was Human, he never saw her as 'less' than himself. And Rory, he always treated her as an Angel. "Yes, well Human or no, she is and always will be my true love. We also don't use the term 'Nephilim', it's considered a pejorative."
She saw the hurt in his eyes, "I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"Luci, she didn't mean any harm. Forgive her."
"Wha- I do forgive her Brother. I cannot expect her to know eons of terminology in a matter of minutes." He shook it off, "Right. Well apparently I now have to go break my daughter's heart by bringing her to the mother she thought died, only to find out she's been in a Loop since she was born." He let out a sigh, "This should go over well. Stay with her Brother, I won't be long."
He walked out the door and flew back to get Sunshine. He tried to pass thoughts to her, he couldn't hear her. He got to his chamber and saw she was still laying on the bed, still in the same position. He motioned Chloe to come to him.
"What did you find out?" she inquired.
He felt pain for Sunshine all over again. "It's her Mum." He poured a drink, "I need to wake her, she'll want to see her. She's been in that Loop re-living the day she gave birth and had that poor child ripped from her." He drained the glass, put it down and made his way to the bed hoping to wake his sleeping daughter. He didn't want to have to feel the hurt that would be coming off of her, but it needed to be done. He reached his hand down and placed it on her shoulder, she reacted to his touch.
"Sunshine, are you awake my dear?" He kept his voice calm, but knew she was already searching his head for memories.
She began to cry, "It was her, wasn't it?"
"Yes." He nodded, she could see the images. "I'm so sorry sweetie, I didn't know."
"I know you didn't, Father. None of this was your fault." She had calmed, and was now sitting up. "I need to see her, please."
He sighed, "I thought as much. Are you able to fly or would you prefer I carry you?"
She tried to stand, and fell back to the bed, "I guess, carry me? I seem to be too weak still."
Chloe watched as Lucifer cradled the child in his arms. Her wings, still too large to fold away, falling to the floor. "Take care of her Lucifer, please."
"Always, My Love."
By the time they reached the door Sunshine had returned somewhat to her normal self. "I don't feel the pain from this room anymore, thank you, Father, for changing the Loop. I also don't want Chloe to feel like I don't love her anymore because I found my mom."
"Dear Child, she would never." He took her hand, and they walked through the door.
Upon seeing her child for the first time, Moonlight broke out in tears. Sunshine slowly took a step over to her and stopped. Her wings did not shine nor did they flutter. She couldn't see into her mind, something was wrong. The woman tried to approach her and she hid behind Lucifer. 'Something is wrong - don't let her touch me Father, Please.' Her eyes flashing a red/gold.
He stopped Moonlight from getting close, "Please understand, she is very timid. She hardly trusts anyone but me."
'SHE is dangerous father - VERY DANGEROUS'
She was screaming in Lucifer's head, the fear was making his heart pound. Amenadiel saw this and moved into her path, intent on making Moonlight stop. "Luci, maybe you should take Sunshine out, let her calm down a bit."
Lucifer got her to the door and they walked out. Amenadiel followed. "What was that about, Luci?"
"That's not her - it's like her - but not HER." Sunshine was shaking. "Like a copy. If I touch her, she WILL destroy me."
"I don't understand. When she touched me I saw her thoughts, she remembered that night the same way I did. It is her. Has to be." Lucifer was confused.
"No father, she stole your memories and used them. She manipulated the both of you. That is not my mother." She was adamant, "Amenadiel, she needs to be destroyed. She is NOT what you think she is. I know now, I was not the Monster the All-Father was talking about, it was HER."
Amenadiel was dumbstruck, "You WANT me to destroy her?"
"YES!" Her wings were fully out now, her shimmer returned. "I need to protect my family, and that woman is NOT my mother. She means my father harm - she means harm to everyone and everything. She has no Universe to go back to because she was thrown from it from her own kind for killing others. SHE IS THE MONSTER!"
Lucifer stood in shock. "Brother, I know it's a hard ask, but can you even do that?"
"Luci, I cannot destroy a soul without reason, even if she isn't from our Universe. Sunshine being afraid is one thing, but to truly do that I would need to know the actual truth. I need to talk to Father."
"So be it." Lucifer looked at him, "Let Gabriel know, find out the truth. I don't want that woman anywhere near Sunshine, and I'm restoring the Loop. I'm not letting her out. I trust my daughter." Lucifer walked back into the door, reset the loop and exited. He did not listen to the woman at all. "Amenadiel, see what you can find out."
"I will Brother."
"Let's go home Sunshine. I'm sorry you had to do this." He felt horrible.
She calmed her wings slightly and looked to her father, "No, I'm sorry. I couldn't see her through the door, but I felt what was happening. I was manipulated as well. The creature in that room did not give me life - she is the evil that my mother tried to get rid of. My mother's true life is gone. That- is all that remains and it is very dangerous. I think that's what the All-Father tried to tell Amenadiel."
"Nevermind all that, let's go home. Chloe will be worried and I'm sure she wants to hear all about this. Though I doubt she will think it went the way it did."
They flew off, upon arriving home, Chloe had two glasses already poured for them. "Well, I didn't expect you back this fast. I was going to make you something to eat..." Her voice trailed off when she saw the look on Lucifer's face. "What happened?"
Sunshine took her glass and sat at the piano and began to play, she had not said a word. Lucifer looked to Chloe and began to tell her what transpired. She was shocked. "Could that be the real reason she was screaming like that? That she actually knew and didn't want to admit it? Wanting it to be her mom, then finding out it was just another manipulation. Lucifer, I'm so sorry."
While she spoke, Lucifer stared at his daughter while she played. He drained his glass, and then refilled it. He had no idea what to do, and the feeling did not sit well with him. His mind was spinning, his heartbreak over his daughter, the fear for Chloe and Rory - for everything. He turned to the bar and hung his head, closing his eyes. He didn't see Chloe leave the room. His hand rubbing his temples. It was just too much. He just needed Amenadiel to find out the truth so this could all end. "So much pain in this child." was all he could manage to say. He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned, expecting to see Chloe. It was Sunshine.
"Father, I will always have my pain. There's no reason you should carry it as well." He had tears welling in his eyes, he took her hand.
He still could not find the words to express himself, "My dear child..." was all he could utter. He wrapped his arms around her waist and gave her a hug. He let himself cry, allowed himself to feel the pain she must have felt.
She didn't let go, she understood. "None of this is your fault. The thing in that room is not your fault either." She pulled away slightly, but did not let go, looking him in the eye, "Amenadiel will know the truth soon, and she will be gone. Then all will be set right. The blame is not yours, it's the All-Father's." She smiled at him and got him to smile as well.
Chloe returned with a tray of snacks. She tried to break the ice, "Figured you could use something to eat." she said, looking to Sunshine. "You were asleep for some time."
Sunshine released her grip on Lucifer as Chloe put the tray down. He wiped his tears away and tried to compose himself. He drained the glass, yet again, bring the bottle to the piano and refilling Sunshine's.
"Thank you for the food, mother. I am hungry indeed." Sunshine walked to her and gave her a hug. "Father will be fine, he just needs some time to process."
They sat and ate while Sunshine continued to explain in further detail about the woman in the room. How her soul had been torn apart - her light and dark side. The light had passed on, the dark was made to suffer for her past. "That's why she was put in a Loop. The All-Father wanted her to suffer. That part of her deserves it." She let out a sigh and continued, "Although I don't approve of it, I do understand why he did it now. He locked me away because he thought I was more like her than I am like you, Father. I am glad that I was able to prove him wrong."
"Or, maybe it's why he put you in the Loop in the first place, to become more like me." Lucifer's voice was now his normal self, "So- Hold on, he knew you could see my thoughts, he had to have known, he didn't want to punish you - he wanted you to learn from me. To become like me and not her. Well, the bad her." He waved his hand toward the halls. "He just knew I wasn't ready to handle being a father."
Chloe was following and, as always, looking to help. "Why don't we wait for Amenadiel to come back before we jump to any conclusions."
"Darling, really. What other conclusion could there be?" He took her hand and gave it a kiss. "Think about it."
She nodded, "It does make an odd amount of sense, but really, leaving her here for so long..." She trailed off, unable to fathom that much time suffering.
Amenadiel returned, a concerned look on his face.
"Well, spit it out, Brother." Lucifer asked.
"Maybe we should speak alone."
Lucifer, could see the news his brother had was not going to be easy for Sunshine. "Doesn't matter if we speak alone," he looked at his daughter, "she will hear it through my mind anyway. So, out with it."
Sunshine hung her head. "Mother and I will go inside, I will prevent myself looking into your thoughts, until you deem it okay."
"Very well." He watched them leave and he and Amenadiel spoke.
"Luci, Father and I spoke, face to face. He explained everything. Sunshine was right, that is not her mother, well, not all of her." He took a deep breath and continued, "It is the evil that she was. He put her here to make her suffer because only her own kind can destroy her."
"Well. That's just great." Lucifer was stunned, "And how do you suppose we do that?"
"Father told me where her Universe was and I sent Gabriel to find them and deliver the message."
"What if they want to take Sunshine?" He shot back, "Didn't think of that before you sent Gabriel, did you Bro?"
Amenadiel shook his head, "They can't take her, she's your daughter and has no attachment to that Universe. I've also told Gabriel that we will not take her from her father." He continued, "I just need to wait for her return, she'll be meeting me here, I thought it best."
Lucifer walked away from his brother and went to retrieve Chloe and Sunshine. He let them in on the conversation. Though Chloe seemed concerned, Sunshine was relaxed, almost happy about what she was told.
As they entered the room where Amenadiel was, Sunshine spoke, "You do not know me, not like I know my Father, yet you were willing to do so much for me. I cannot thank you enough for helping me and my family."
He walked to her, reaching out with his hand, she stepped back, trying to avoid the touch. "Please don't."
"Brother, that would be very unwise." Lucifer spoke, "You touch her and she can see everything you have ever done and be attached to your mind forever. You will also see everything she knows." He stared at his brother, "She told me when she first saw you not to let you touch her."
He smiled at his brother, "Another thing Father told me was that he was with her for the most important part of her life, her first years. He spent every day with her. He absolutely adored her and yes, he did touch her with his bare hands. It seems the power of the Almighty is something she can't see." He had a gleam in his eye, "He didn't want to put his own grand-daughter here, in a Loop, but you know he works in mysterious-"
"Do not finish that statement." Lucifer snapped. He hated hearing that 'mysterious ways' line for everything. "That doesn't explain why she has no memory of dear 'ol dad raising her, and she remembers everything - just like me."
"He took the memories from her to spare her. When he put her here he was so upset he nearly destroyed civilization."
Sunshine, having listened and remained quiet finally spoke, "Spare me? From what? The fact that someone actually did love me at one point and then threw me into a prison so I could wait for my dad to come save me?"
"You called him 'Dad' Sunshine." Chloe smiled, "First time you've done that."
Lucifer was glowing, "She did, didn't she?"
"I'm sorry Father, it just came out." She seemed genuine.
"He is your dad, so it's not a bad thing Sunshine." Chloe was elated.
Gabriel appeared, "Um - Did you know about the hall? Is that a new thing for Hell now? Flowers and grass? Amenadiel, I saw a butterfly - and a cat. A CAT."
"Sister," Lucifer spoke, "yes, we know. Sunshine is very talented. Did you find the Universe you were sent to find?"
Gabriel looked to Sunshine, "Wow, her wings are HUGE." She put her hand out to Sunshine and again, Sunshine stepped back.
Chloe cut her off, "Don't!"
"I won't bite, it's just a handshake."
Putting his hand up, Lucifer interjected, "No time to explain, just don't touch her." He went to his daughter and took her hand.
"Gabriel, what did you learn?" Amenadiel asked.
She began, "The Universe you sent me to is dying, there are very few celestials left. Their creator is weak. She over-extended herself and everything started to go wrong. Most of her children have been released to other Universes like her mother was," she pointed to Sunshine and continued, "in an attempt to breed and come back to repopulate and regain their power. Of the ones that are there, they are either to weak to leave or are going insane." She took a deep breath, "The ones that did leave, well, they didn't want to return to a dying Universe. Their creator did give me this though," she opened her pouch and handed Amenadiel a small fruit no bigger than a grape. "You just have to feed it to her, and she will be no more. Apparently if eaten, it can kill any celestial from their Universe. She didn't want to part with it, she said it was the only one left."
As soon as Gabriel took out the fruit Sunshine's wings wet full sized and began to shine brightly. She was scared. She knocked into the bar, breaking several bottles. "Sorry Father," her eyes a bright gold with a rim of red, "please keep that away from me..."
"Well, so much for The Balveine 50 year." Lucifer tried to recover what he could from the bottle. Poured what little was left into two glasses and handed one to Sunshine.
Amenadiel took the fruit from Gabriel and vanished, he was going to do this himself. He reached the door and entered. The woman was back in her Loop, screaming in labor. He walked up to her, "This will ease your pain." he said, placing the fruit in her mouth. She bit down, the sweet juice quickly became a noxious bitter taste. Her siren song had turned into a scream, her body was now violently shaking. The scream became louder, shaking the walls. Then she disappeared. The Loop had stopped. Amenadiel walked out the door, upon looking back, the door had vanished. She was gone.
Gabriel was in awe of Sunshine, she had never seen wings do this before, not only did they get larger, they changed colour. "How did tha-?" was all she could muster.
"Because she's my daughter." Lucifer drank from the glass, "Oh, that is so good. And she is beautiful."
"She is just like you, the red in her eyes, the white wings that glow..." Gabriel spoke softly, almost frightened.
Sunshine drank, "Oh my, that is good."
Amenadiel returned.
"Out with it Brother." Lucifer spoke.
"She's gone Sunshine. She won't cause you any harm." Amenadiel tried to keep her at ease.
Sunshine relaxed, her wings calmed down, the shine now very slight. "Now we can finally be free." She grabbed Lucifer's hand and her wings gave a flutter, "We can all be free and I can have an actual family."
"Dare I say, this calls for a celebration?" Lucifer asked?
"Luci, I have a Universe to run. I have to get back, but I am very happy for all of you." With that, Amenadiel took his leave.
"So, what's with the halls?" Gabriel asked again.
Chloe looked to Lucifer, "Might as well pour her a drink and tell her everything. The sooner you do, the sooner your siblings will know everything and you won't have to keep repeating yourself."
Gabriel looked at him, arms out, expecting him to start talking.
'Do it Dad, it will make it easier.'
"Fine. Fine." He poured his sister a drink, half regretting having to do this. "It began about four thousand Earth years ago..." he began the story.
Gabriel absorbed everything Lucifer said, knowing she would tell the entire story to everyone. When his tale was complete, she stared at him with true disbelief. "Wow. I can't believe Dad did that to her, that's messed up. I mean, it worked out for the best, but still."
Chloe let Lucifer know the day was getting late. Sunshine needed rest and they were going to have a busy next day of souls. Gabriel, not one to be able to take a hint, didn't budge.
"Yes. Well, Gabriel that would be your cue to go and tell our siblings everything, won't it?" Lucifer knew just how to get to her.
"Right, gatcha." Gabriel got up, opened her wings and left.
"So, she's going to tell everyone?" Sunshine asked.
Lucifer nodded. "Be prepared to meet the rest of my siblings, and your cousin Charlie."
She was tired, it was such a hard day. She excused herself from Chloe and Lucifer and went to her own rooms. She poured a drink, sat down at her piano and played for a while, putting herself at ease. She went to her bedroom and undressed. Again, laying on her stomach, she spread her wings open. They flowed off the edges of the large bed, the blanket tucked around her. Sleep came easy to her this night, her torment was over. She wasn't alone anymore, she had a real family now. A father that loves her, truly loves her, she can see it in his mind and feel it in his heart. He is taken with her. She can make Hell a beautiful place for her family and help free damned souls. She is where she should be, for now...
