A/N: And here, we have the 3rd chapter of "Pokémon: Indigo League". Now, this time, Ash would ben shown to be much less of an idiot (admittedly) in this chapter for those who complained about Ash being a bit too stupid. :)

Chapter 3: Ash Catches a Pokémon!
Act I
One day, Ash and Caterpie had a stare-off as Maya and Mew looked on.
Narrator: Deep in the dark Viridian Forest, Ash discovers a Caterpie and tries his best to make his first Pokémon catch.
"Go, Poké Ball!", Ash shouted before he threw the Pokéball, which hit its target, which gave out a sort of cry before it turned into red light, which got sucked to the inside of a Poké Ball, which closed before the Caterpie within struggled to break out, but it ended up getting captured in the end.
"All right, I did it! I did it! I got Caterpie! And this time, I did it all by myself!", Ash shouted happily as Maya grinned as did Mew before Ash took Misty's hand and started running around with her.
"This is the first step on my way to becoming the number one Pokémon master in the whole world.", Ash grinned with a bit of laughter.
"Hey! Wait a minute. I'm getting dizzy! Ash, you're gonna get me sick! Quit it!", Misty exclaimed as Pikachu tried to keep its eyes on Ash and Misty only to wind up dizzy before collapsing backwards.
"Look out, Pokémon! Nothing's gonna stop me now!", Ash grinned.
"Wow. I never saw him so happy.", Maya grinned.
"Mew.", Mew nodded.
Ash Catches a Pokémon!
"Congratulations, Ash.", Maya grinned.
"Ash, you're acting like a...", Misty began before Ash interrupted.
"Look! Inside this ball is the next one after the very first Pokémon I ever caught in my whole entire life.", Ash grinned.
"Great. Just keep it away from me. Will you?", Misty asked.
"Hold on. You're not afraid of a Caterpie in a Poké Ball, are you?", Ash puzzled.
"Bugs get me all bugged out! Even when they're in a Poké Ball. Just keep them away!", Misty exclaimed before turning away.
"Yep. She's scared.", Maya guessed.
"Mew?", Mew puzzled.
"I like bugs, even when not in Poké Balls. It must be great for Caterpie inside the Poké Ball, all cute and comfortable inside there. I love my new little Pokémon.", Ash grinned, looking at his Poké Ball.
"I guess it takes a worm to love a worm.", Misty commented.
"Very funny. Pikachu, we've got a new friend.", Ash grinned as he went over to Pikachu, who got up and saw the Poké Ball.
"Pika! (I like him already!)", Pikachu said.
"Yeah, you should go check it out, Mew.", Maya grinned.
"Mew. Mew. Mew.", Mew smiled excitedly as it went over to the Poké Ball.
"Oh, you guys. I'm glad you all like it. And from now on, we'll catch a whole bunch of new friends. Caterpie, you're sticking with us.", Ash grinned.
"Does that mean...?", Misty asked worriedly.
"You better believe it.", Maya responded.
"Come on out, Caterpie!", Ash shouted as he then tossed out his Poké Ball, which then released Caterpie, just as Misty screamed, running for her life, before Caterpie materialized with Misty nervously watching from behind a far-away tree.
"It's all right, Misty. There's nothing to be scared of. Come on, Caterpie. Climb up on my shoulder.", Ash gestured before Caterpie started doing so only to spot Misty and ran, or rather, wiggled, towards her.
"Huh? Caterpie, where are you going?", Ash asked.
"Take a guess.", Maya responded.
"Mew.", Mew agreed before Misty screamed and Caterpie started rubbing against Misty's leg.
"Hey, Misty! I think Caterpie really likes you. Isn't that cute?", Ash grinned.
"Surprising. A Caterpie attracted to someone with a fear of bugs.", Maya said.
"Mew?", Mew puzzled.
"Get this disgusting bug away from me!", Misty demanded, puzzling Caterpie with Mew just as puzzled.
"Please don't come any closer to me!", Misty exclaimed while moving away from Caterpie quickly backwards.
"What? You really think Caterpie is disgusting?", Maya puzzled before Caterpie groaned sadly with Pikachu comforting it with pats on the back.
"Pika Pika. (It's okay, Caterpie.)", Pikachu commented.
"I know! You be friends with that creepy bug and I'll be friends with Pikachu.", Misty suggested.
"Hey! Caterpie's not creepy!", Maya scolded.
"She's right. Besides, Pikachu, only likes me and zaps anybody who tries to...", Ash began before he noticed, much to his surprise, that Pikachu was liking the attention Misty is giving him.
"Your approach isn't looking too good, Ash.", Maya commented.
"I guess not.", Ash agreed before Misty noticed a tearful Caterpie and panicked again.
"It's so gross. Ash, put that slimy thing back in the Pokéball! Bugs are one of the three most disgusting things in the world!", Misty demanded.
"Really? What other disgusting things are there?", Maya asked.
"Carrots, peppers, and bugs. Everybody has something they don't like and I don't like bugs!", Misty exclaimed.
"For your information, I may have something I don't like, but bugs isn't one of them.", Maya stated.
"Oh, really? What are you afraid of?", Misty asked.
"I don't want to talk about it.", Maya responded.
"And I like carrots, peppers, and bugs, too. What I don't like is the way you're hurting Caterpie's feelings with your silly fear of bugs.", Ash added before Misty turned away with a scoff.
"I don't think you're ugly or disgusting at all Caterpie. Come on. Climb up on my shoulder.", Ash assured as he turned to Caterpie.
"Chu chu. (Go on, Caterpie.)", Pikachu assured before Caterpie climbed up Ash's arm to get on his shoulder.
"You're not gonna scare Misty anymore.", Ash assured.
"What do you mean he won't scare me?", Misty asked.
"Don't worry. Just look directly at Mew as we walk and we should have nothing to worry about.", Maya suggested before Mew nodded.
"Mew.", Mew agreed.
"Well, if that's what it takes...", Misty responded before she and the others walked together as Misty glanced at Mew.
Later afterwards, our heroes have stopped for the night.
"Well, we'd better get some sleep, you guys. Tomorrow's gonna be a big day.", Ash suggested.
"Pi. (Right.)", Pikachu agreed before Caterpie nodded.
"Well, we'd all get some sleep if you shut your big mouth.", Misty responded.
"Don't let the bed bugs bite.", Ash retorted before Misty humph'd.
"All right, you two. That's enough. We can hash all this out tomorrow...", Maya yawned before sleeping, puzzling Mew and Pikachu before Caterpie spoke up, albeit in Pokémon sounds.
"(Hey! Pikachu! Mew!)", Caterpie exclaimed.
"(What is it?)", Mew puzzled.
"(Look up there!)", Caterpie responded before the three Pokémon looked up.
"(Wow!)", Pikachu spoke in awe.
"(It really is beautiful, isn't it?)", Mew asked.
"(You know...)", Caterpie began.
"(What?)", Pikachu puzzled.
"(You wanna know what that moon reminds me of?)", Caterpie asked.
"(Sure, tell us.)", Pikachu responded.
"(I saw some flying type Pokémon up there that were looking for bug types like me, but we were all safe and sound with all the Metapod around. But then my mommy appeared and gave me a warm cuddle!)", Caterpie explained.
"(Your mother must be a Butterfree.)", Mew guessed.
"(Yep.)", Caterpie responded.
"(Cool!)", Pikachu grinned.
"(Imagine if all the Butterfree and Caterpie family came together to see me today! Makes me feel happy. Wouldn't you all be happy?)", Caterpie asked.
"(Of course, we'd be happy! I'd love to meet your family someday.)", Pikachu assured.
"(And we'd be friends, too! Wouldn't you think?)", Caterpie asked.
"(Of course! Friendship is the best thing ever!)", Mew responded as it flew around.
"(You know, guys, one time I found something like this Poké Ball. But when I went even closer, it disappeared!)", Caterpie explained.
"(Wow! Did that really happen?)", Pikachu asked before Caterpie nodded.
"(I even sorta thought it was food!)", Caterpie added.
"(That's so funny!)", Mew laughed.
"(Do you think that I'll evolve someday?)", Caterpie asked.
"(Yeah! And when you do, Ash's gonna be so proud.)", Pikachu assured.
"(I hope I evolve soon. I want to be beautiful for Misty so that she won't be afraid of me.)", Caterpie said.
"(Just give it time. And good things will happen soon.)", Mew assured.
A few moments afterward, while everyone else was asleep, Mew flew over to Maya's face and happily tickled her nose with its tail, making her sneeze, blowing Mew back before it stopped itself and went over to Caterpie before picking it up and placing it on Misty's head before giggling and moving away.
The next morning, Misty woke up to find, in her mind, a nasty surprise on top of her head and screamed, alerting everyone to Misty.
"What's wrong? What's going on?", Ash asked.
"What's this thing doing sleeping on my head?!", Misty exclaimed.
"Aw. Caterpie just wants to be your friend.", Ash guessed with a chuckle.
"If that thing wants to be my friend, it can stop bugging me already!", Misty exclaimed before Mew giggled, which unfortunately caught Misty's attention.
"You mean you did this?! You're so unbelievable! You know bugs scare me!", Misty scolded, making Mew hang its head down sadly, making Maya glare at Misty.
"And as for you, if you're a Pokémon, get out of my face and into that Poké Ball!", Misty demanded, making Caterpie twice as sad, if not shocked.
"You're so unbelievable, Misty! Caterpie means no harm. Why it likes you I'll never know.", Ash scolded before he noticed Caterpie sadly going into its Poké Ball.
"Caterpie, what's the matter?", Ash asked as he wiggled near Caterpie, who sadly then got to its Poké Ball and went inside.
"Hey, hold on, Caterpie!", Ash exclaimed.
"Pikachu. (Poor guy)", Pikachu said as he tapped the Poké Ball twice.
"Did you really have to send Caterpie away like that?!", Maya exclaimed.
"Yeah, Misty! You owe Caterpie an apology! Pokémon have feelings too, you know!", Ash added.
"Feelings? Hmph! That thing is gross and I don't care about gross things!", Misty responded, making Maya snap at her quickly.
"HOW HEARTLESS CAN YOU BE?! Didn't it ever occur to you that you should take into consideration that maybe Bugs have feelings too?! It's absolutely mean, no, downright cruel of you to hate bugs when all they want to do is be your friend! Especially cute, mischievous Pokémon like Mew!", Maya scolded, slightly surprising Misty.
"Mew...?", Misty puzzled before realizing what she meant.
"Demanding Caterpie to go away like that is one thing, but scolding Mew like that just because you hate bugs is another! You're lucky I even bothered to help you with your bike with the way you're acting now.", Maya shouted, shocking Misty before Mew sadly went over to Misty and licked her nose apologetically, helping her realize how rash she was in scolding Mew the way she did.
"Oh... All right, I forgive you.", Misty responded, hugging Mew, making it beam up a bit.
"Mew.", Mew grinned.
"Oh. Well, that takes care of that.", Maya grinned a bit in surprise.
"Look. I'm sorry I yelled at them, but you already know by now how much I hate bugs.", Misty responded.
"I'm not the one you should apologize to, though the apology is appreciated. As long as we're apologizing though, I'm sorry I got out of hand. I just got defensive for Mew. Just like back then. As for Caterpie, though, you're gonna have to take it up with it sooner or later.", Maya advised, worrying Misty a bit before Ash bent over to Caterpie.
"Come on, Caterpie. Don't you worry, someday we'll show her.", Ash assured before another Pokémon showed up as it landed and picked up a worm.
"Wow! A Pidgeotto!", Ash grinned as Maya and Mew also noticed it.
"A Pidgeotto? That's Pidgey's evolved form.", Maya realized as Ash got out his PokéDex.
"Pidgeotto, an evolved form of the Pidgey. It is armed with sharp claws and dives from the sky to capture its prey. Unlike the more gentle Pidgey, Pidgeotto can be dangerous. Approach with extreme caution.", Dexter warned.
"Sounds dangerous, all right.", Maya said.
"All right, Pidgeotto. I'll show you who's the dangerous one around here. Go, Poké Ball!", Ash began before Maya stopped him.
"Easy, there, Ash. You can't just throw a Poké Ball and capture a Pokémon. You have to battle and weaken it first. The only reason you got to catch Caterpie is because it's practically for beginners. And you also have to take into account the Pokémon's Type Effectiveness in battle. For example, since Pidgeotto is a flying type and Caterpie's a bug type, the latter might not do so well against it. But you do have Pikachu. It does seem effective against Pidgeotto.", Maya assured.
"Well, all right. Caterpie seems like it's going through a lot anyway. Pikachu, I choose you!", Ash shouted before Pikachu got into battle.
"Pika, Pika! (You got it!)", Pikachu said.

"Pikachu, I choose you!", Ash shouted.
"Pi! (Right!)", Pikachu responded before Pidgeotto flew up into the air as if preparing to do a gust attack.
"Pikachu, Thunder Shock now!", Ash shouted.
"Pikachu! (Thunder...Shock!)", Pikachu shouted as it then let loose its Thunder Shock, zapping Pidgeotto in the process before it started to fall down.
"Go, Poké Ball!", Ash shouted as he launched his Poké Ball, which hit its target.
For a moment, Pidgeotto struggled, but was ultimately caught in the end.
"All right! We got Pidgeotto!", Ash grinned as he got out two fingers raised upward as did Pikachu.
"Pikachu! (Congratulations!)", Pikachu grinned.
"You did great, Ash!", Maya grinned.
"Mew.", Mew nodded.
"I am the greatest.
"I wouldn't go that far. But I guess you aren't the worst either. Just remember: with Pokémon, you've got to use strategy.", Misty advised.
"Right. I'll try to remember that.", Ash nodded.
"You know, I've been meaning to ask. How do you know so much about Pokémon battling strategy when you only have a Goldeen?", Maya asked with Mew just as puzzled as it leaned its head a bit.
"Mew.", Mew added.
"Well, I, uh...", Misty began, a bit embarrassed, before a familiar laughing sound was heard.
"So, we meet again.", James said.
"Wait. I know that voice.", Ash said.
"Yeah, me, too.", Maya added.
"Mew...", Mew agreed.
"Prepare for trouble, no use trying.", Jessie added.
"And make it double, don't bother crying.", James added.
"To protect the world from devastation.", Jessie began.
"To unite all peoples within our nation.", James added.
"To denounce the evils of truth and love.", Jessie added.
"To extend our reach to the stars above.", James added.
"Jessie.", Jessie introduced.
"And James.", James added.
"No. Not this again.", Ash groaned.
"Tell me about it.", Maya added.
"Team Rocket blast off at the speed of light.", Jessie added.
"Surrender now or prepare to fight!", James added.
"Meowth, daaaaaat's right!", Meowth grinned.
"Come on! We just blasted you all the way out of the Pokémon Center and already, you're back for more? What do you want this time?", Maya asked.
"Oh, I'll tell you what we want: your Pokémon. Only it isn't just that Mew.", Jessie replied.
"It's that Pikachu we want as well.", James added.
"That Pikachu's mine. Go out and find your own.", Ash refused.
"The only Pikachu we want is that one.", Jessie responded.
"We're only looking for the rarest, most valuable Pokémon in the world, Mew included.", James added.
"And that special Pikachu along with Mew is just the kind of Pokémon we need.", Jessie added before Meowth began clawing at both Jessie and James' faces.
"YOU NUMBSKULLS! Stop giving away all our secrets!", Meowth exclaimed.
"Is my Pikachu really that special?", Ash asked before Meowth landed on the grass.
"That Pikachu of yours was quite a shocker. In fact, the last time we met, it jolted me like you wouldn't believe! Its powers exceed it's evolutionary level. Your Pokémon...", Meowth began as it even showed a flashback of what happened last night, prior to getting stomped on by Jessie and James.
"Now you're the one giving away all our secrets!", Jessie scolded.
"Shut up before you tell them everything!", James added.
"Stop it; I'm the one in charge!", Meowth exclaimed.
"Why don't you make things easy and hand over those Pokémon?", Jessie asked.
"No way!", Ash refused as he turned away.
"If you want them, you're gonna have to go through us!", Maya added.
"Mew!", Mew added determinedly.
"Then get through you, we shall!", James added.
"Come on out, Ekans!", Jessie exclaimed.
"Koffing, you, too!", James added as both Pokémon materialized.
"Two against one?! Hey, that's cheating.", Ash exclaimed.
"Well, as we say, all's fair in love, war and Pokémon battle.", Jessie responded.
"Yeah, well that saying's rotten, and so are you.", Ash scolded.
"Of course, we are. We're the bad guys; what did you expect?", James responded.
"Well, if they're gonna use two Pokémon, I don't see why we can't use two Pokémon.", Misty responded.
"She has a point. Normally, I'd follow the rules, but if we do that now with them around, we could lose all our Pokémon. So, how about we make this a team battle, Mew?", Maya added.
"Mew.", Mew nodded.
"Koffing, use Sludge on Mew and Pikachu, now.", James ordered before Koffing fired its attack on Mew and Pikachu.
"Mew, use teleport!", Maya shouted.
"Mew.", Mew said quickly as it teleported out of the attack's way before it reappeared and tried to go after Pikachu only for it to be too late as it blinded Pikachu.
"Pikachu!", Maya exclaimed before Pikachu tried to rub its eyes with Ash picking it up.
"That was a cheap shot!", Ash exclaimed.
"If you think you can get away with your dirty tricks, you'd better think again!", Maya growled before Ash picked up Pikachu and handed it to Misty.
"They might try anything to get it, but no matter what happens, don't let them take Pikachu, got it?", Ash asked before Misty, surprised as she was, eventually took Pikachu as requested.
"But what about the other two?", Misty asked.
"Leave that to us.", Maya assured.
"So, what's your big battle plan?", Jessie asked.
"Mew, use Psychic on Koffing!", Maya exclaimed before Mew then started using Psychic on Koffing, causing it to fly around uncontrollably before then getting smacked into a tree, disorienting it briefly.
"Get it together, Koffing!", James shouted before Koffing shook a bit and got its focus back.
"Any ideas, Ash?", Maya asked.
"So far, only one. Don't know if it'll work, but I at least have to try. Pidgeotto, I choose you!", Ash shouted as he let loose Pidgeotto from its Poké Ball.
"It's grime time, Koffing.", James said before Koffing flew up to Pidgeotto and tried to hit it with Sludge, but to no avail.
"Go your get dinner, Ekans!", Jessie shouted before Ekans went after it, too, only for Pidgeotto to dodge both Pokémon.
"Pidgeotto, use Peck!", Ash urged before Pidgeotto dove downwards.
"Ekans, use Dig!", Jessie exclaimed before Ekans dug underground, prompting Pidgeotto to stop and look around just as Koffing went behind Pidgeotto.
"Pidgeotto, watch out! Behind you!", Ash shouted before Koffing then attempted to use Smog, which was then promptly stopped with Pidgeotto's flap of its wings before Koffing promptly fired multiple sludges at Pidgeotto, who dodged them as Ekans emerged from behind.
"Pidgeotto!", Misty said in worry before Pidgeotto flew up just in time before Ekans could strike.
"That was close. And to think that they'd use that divide-and-conquer maneuver. Not that it did much good so far.", Maya stated.
"We're gonna get a Pokémon! We're gonna get a Pokémon! We're gonna get a Pokémon!", Team Rocket chanted happily before Ekans and Koffing flew up around Pidgeotto.
"Pidgeotto, use Gust, now!", Ash urged before Pidgeotto tried to do so only to miss as Koffing dodged prior to Koffing and Ekans knocking Pidgeotto out of the sky.
"Pidgeotto, return!", Ash urged before Pidgeotto, knocked unconscious, was then recalled.
"You did your best, Pidgeotto.", Ash said to the Poké Ball.
"Guess you have no choice. Let Pikachu in and watch Team Rocket win.", Jessie smirked.
"Pikachu!", Pikachu urged, waving its arms.
"No, Pikachu. You can't battle in this condition.", Misty said in worry before Maya realized something.
"Hold on. There's still one other Pokémon left.", Maya realized.
"Oh, yeah. You're right.", Ash said before he got out his Poké Ball.
"Ash, what are...?", Misty began.
"I know you've been going through a lot recently. But right now, Caterpie, you're my only hope. Just give it your very best shot! Caterpie, I choose you!", Ash shouted as he then tossed out his Poké Ball, which released Caterpie, puzzling it.
"What is that?", James puzzled.
"Hold on. That's just a measly little bug.", Meowth realized before he, along with Jessie and James, laughed.
"Let's get the bug spray while we're at it.", Jessie laughed before Ekans and Caterpie all charged toward Caterpie, who then quivered and put its head on the ground with its stubs on top, worrying Pikachu as it overheard this.
"Pika! (Stop it!)", Pikachu exclaimed as it waved its arms.
"Hang in there.", Misty said.
"Come on, Caterpie...!", Maya said in worry before Ash then came up with an idea.
"Caterpie, use String Shot!", Ash urged before Caterpie looked up from the ground, stood its ground, and then sprayed Koffing first, covering it with web completely with Ekans getting webbed up as well, coating its head before Caterpie charged toward Koffing and knocked it into Ekans with a tackle, knocking them back.
"Alright! Way to go, Caterpie!", Maya grinned.
"We lost to a Caterpie?!", James exclaimed in surprise.
"That bugs me more than I can say.", Jessie added before Meowth stepped forward toward Caterpie.
"Now watch a real Pokémon in action.", Meowth said as he readied his claws before Mew then sprayed out some webs from its mouth as it was apparently using String Shot on Meowth, who eventually got webbed up by another string shot, making Mew laugh before Jessie and James went over to Meowth.
"It's time Team Rocket blasted off.", Jessie said before she and James took off quickly, the latter dropping a rose.
"You may have won this round, but we'll be back!", James shouted.
"Come back anytime. We'll be glad to beat you.", Misty responded before sticking her tongue out as Mew giggled again.
"We did it... We did it! We won our first Pokémon victory fair and square!", Ash grinned before stretching his fist out to the air.
"All right!", Ash shouted proudly before picking Caterpie up.
"Caterpie, I'm very proud of you. You really did your best and we won because of you!", Ash grinned.
"Yeah. Congratulations.", Maya added.
'Mew.", Mew added.
"You're stronger than you look, Caterpie.", Misty grinned.
"Pika. (You were awesome.)", Pikachu added.
"Well, Misty. It looks like you're warming up to it.", Ash grinned, holding Caterpie close to her.
"Well, I...", Misty began.
"So why don't you two make up? Just pat Caterpie on the head and say thanks for a really great job. You like Pokémon, so it's only right to congratulate one for doing a good job.", Ash grinned.
"I guess you're right.", Misty responded.
But as Misty reached to pet Caterpie, it suddenly sprayed mist-like silk into the air above it, spooking Misty.
"Caterpie?", Ash puzzled as he set Caterpie down.
"Wait. Is it...?", Maya puzzled with Mew in just as much awe.
"It's evolving!", Misty guessed before the evolution into a sort of shell Pokémon was complete.
"Wow, Caterpie, this is so great.", Ash grinned before he got Dexter out.
"Metapod. Caterpie's next stage. It has encased it's body in a hard shell. This specimen reached this stage faster than any previously discovered Pokémon of this variety.", Dexter stated.
"Hey, maybe that means it could keep on changing and go on to the next stage right away.", Ash smiled.
"Pi Pika Pi! (Yeah, Ash!)", Pikachu agreed before it went to a flashback of Caterpie looking up at the moon.
"Nice to meet you, Metapod.", Ash said as he picked up Metapod before chuckling.
"Don't feel like talking, huh? Ash grinned.
"Pikachu. (Congratulations, Metapod.)", Pikachu congratulated before Misty spoke up.
"I've never known anyone like them. They really do love Pokémon.", Misty grinned.
"Well, that's the kind of trainer my brother is. he really loves them.", Maya responded before she and Misty turned to each other and giggled as did Mew, who wrapped its tail around Maya's neck gently just as Ash held Metapod close to Misty, spooking her again.
"Misty, you two were just about to make friends. You didn't forget, did you?", Ash asked.
"I didn't forget, but I...", Misty began before another bug Pokémon flew overhead, frightening Misty.
This time, it was a Beedrill.
"I think that was a Beedrill!", Maya guessed.
"I'll do anything, let's just out of this forest!", Misty exclaimed.
"Come on! There's still plenty more Pokémon in this forest.", Ash said.
"Besides, it'll takes a couple days to get out of the Viridian Forest. So, the sooner we all get going, the sooner we can get out of here.", Maya said as everyone started running.
"Hey, wait for me.", Misty exclaimed as Misty raced to catch up.
"Come on! We've got lots of Pokémon to catch.", Ash shouted.
"Right behind you, Ash!", Maya responded.
"Mew!", Mew agreed.
