Chapter 10: Steve

The Avengers had come to Asgard expecting to fight Loki, and instead they were preparing to face an unknown new enemy with a massive spaceship. Steve knew he should have expected things to go awry. After all, that's all they'd done thus far. Why would it change now?

Thor caught up with him as he led the team back out of the palace onto the beginning of the dead Bifrost, holding out a handful of small black rocks. They looked like unmarked dominoes. "Take these," he said.

Steve accepted them. "What are they?"

"Healing stones. You may need them."

Steve slipped the stones into one of the pouches on his belt. "You might be right." But he sure hoped not.

He looked up as a large set of doors on the attacking spaceship opened. Numerous chariot-type crafts – like the ones they'd faced at the Battle of New York – flew out over the city and a load of Chitauri dropped straight onto the far end of the Bridge from the ship.

Wonderful.

Steve faced the team. "Stark, you take the left half of the city," he ordered quickly. "Banner, Natasha, go with him. Carol, you and the twins take the right side. Thor and I will go center."

The group split up and Thor began to spin Mjolnir.

"Mind if I catch a ride?" Steve asked.

"Not at all." Thor grabbed hold of Steve and took off, soaring down the Bridge towards the Chitauri.

"This is my stop," Steve said as they approached the invading aliens.

"Now?" Thor queried.

"Now!" Steve replied. He held his shield in front of himself as Thor hurled him towards the Chitauri. He crashed through their ranks and landed on the Bifrost, rolling to recover.

Thor landed in the aliens' midst and Steve leapt up to join him. He still wasn't sure why the Chitauri were attacking, but he was happy to try and stop them.
