Jewel's pov

When I was a few days away from the day the boys and I would turn 13, I began to feel rather strange. Not in a bad way, but just the opposite. I felt stronger, faster, stopped having allergies in the spring... But I also knew something was not right about this. This was not at all normal. However, I was too scared of telling my parents, for fear of what they might say or do. I had to keep this to myself, even keeping this a secret from my brothers, my built-in best friends. honestly had never kept anything from them before. I felt a little bummed, but it was for the best.

I will admit it was hard to keep this from my parents and my other friends, and even harder to find a safe place, both secluded and not hazardous, to test out these new abilities I had been developing and discovering for the past few days. It was scary, exciting and confusing at the same time. I wanted to tell someone, but the fear of being turned into a lab rat or a psych ward live-in made me keep my exploits a secret from everyone around me. After school, while Jord played on his phone in the computer lab and Jon had his football practice, I would sneak away to my secret warehouse to try to hone these new abilities. So far I knew I had super strength, super speed, invulnerability and heightened senses. I was trying to get a better grip on my speed, strength and super hearing at the present moment, with a desire to help keep Metropolis safe, just as my parents were helping in their own way by reporting as journalists. They helped report on the issues, and I could help the crime rate diminish.

I would have to be smart about it, though. Where I went, when... How often I relied on the same cover story... No way my parents would let me do this if they knew what was really going on, they would never understand. And, this is gonna sound bad and selfish, so, don't get me wrong; but... maybe in doing this I could eventually be led to Superman. He would understand what I was going through. Powers, wanting to save the world, similar powers... He and Supergirl were probably the only ones who could understand and sympathize with what I'm going through, and deep down and dreams aside, I knew I would never get to meet them. Guess I was left to figure out this whole hero thing on my own. Sigh.

Safe in my secret warehouse and away from distractions, I donned my signature blue shirt and red jacket I wore on patrols, having had read somewhere that the Man of Steel started off with the same as a makeshift getup to conceal his identity. Hey, aside from his real identity, Superman was public domain on the internet. Information given could be found if sought after enough. And by donning the same starter outfit, it gave people something to recognize, and, again, just looking for guidance and someone who understands, but perhaps it would be a siren call for the Man of Steel himself to come find me.

I decided to start with my superhearing, which was admittedly harder to master than my other senses. I took my iPod and amped up the sound, then set a timer of 2 minutes on my phone after setting it on vibrate. When the timer went off, all I had to do was hone in to the vibrating timer and hopefully hear it over the music. I could hear everything, but I needed to be able to tune in to different sounds on command, and them alone. To be able to tell when someone was truly in distress. After this, I would try to get a good grip on my strength, then set off to the streets.

The two minutes I had set for my alarm went by like eternity itself, and the music was really loud. That's what I get for using a heavy metal band Jordan likes to listen to while blasting his videogame on surround sound. But, even through aall that assault on my sensitive ears, I managed a smile. I heard my alarm! That was better than yesterday! Yesterday it took me 20 minutes to hear it, and today I heard it on the first ring! Exciting me even further, I was able to control and measure my strength as well, punching a hole in the punching bag instead of punching it 300 yards clear into the sky. Feeling giddy from the progress, I set off into the night, ready to help whoever needed me. I was no longer Jewel Lane-Kent, but the Red Blue Blur.
