I'm back! I've got the grind going on, don't I? Anyways, stay home, stay safe.
Darius asked Ben for the time. The youngest teen still had his watch. 2:33. The older teen nodded. He got up, and woke the two girls sitting on the couch. "Wake up you two. It's lunch time." Sammy and Yaz opened their eyes.
"Are we there yet?" Sammy asked.
"We still have a few hours ahead." Darius said. "But with the way Kenji has been steering, we should make it by sunset."
Yaz let out a laugh. "You trust Kenji to steer the boat?"
Darius didn't laugh. "He's the only one who has ANY boating experiance. So I'm gonna have to." The older teen left to go wake up Brooklynn. He got to the entrance, and seeing that the door was open, looked in. Brooklynn was asleep on the floor. Her jacket was being used as a pillow. This might be the first time Darius has seen her without her jacket on. So she likes orange as well. UGH. Keep it together man. Darius walked over to where she slept. He knelt next to her, and shook her shoulder a few times. "Brooklynn. Hey, wake up."
She groaned as she opened her eyes. She smiled when she saw Darius. "Hey. Are we there yet?"
A few strands of hair were in her face. Without thinking, Darius put the strands behind her ears. "We've got a few hours still. But it's lunch time. We gotta eat. I haven't in like a day." The two teens got off the floor, and walked back to the deck.
Sammy had already gotten the fruit out, but put a couple of different fruits on some plates she found. After everyone had gotten a plate, she said, "Oh my gosh. Are we really off this island? Or am I just dreaming again?"
Yaz told her, "If this was a dream, I think we would have a change of clothes. We've been wearing these scrubs for at least a week and a half."
Ben smirked. "Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'VE always wanted a signature look." He referred to his torn tank-top, whatever was left of his shirt that he was using as a bandana, and his dirty cargo pants. Everyone got a chuckle out of it. The only one who wasn't here was Kenji. Darius once again looked up to the bridge. Kenji's face was still stoic. Unmoving. Darius stood up.
"Where are you going?" Sammy asked.
"To grab Kenji. He needs to eat too." Darius answered.
Sammy stood up and rushed ahead of him. "It might be better if you just gave him some space. There will be plenty of time to talk to him before we get back. I'll go get him."
Darius nodded and sat back down. He finished his plate of fruit, and laid his head back down. It was a weird feeling. It was comfortable. He hated it. That was a first for him. Hating a comfortable chair. Feels like I'm about to sink.
Kenji came down with Sammy a minute later. When Sammy sat down by Yaz, the other teen saw that there was no other seat other than one across from Darius. Kenji grabbed his plate off the table. After a few minutes of awkward silence, Ben came back with a dish put out on one of those fancy dish trays. "And now, for the main course." Ben said happily. "I present to you, for your eating pleasure only. The plumpest, the JUICIEST…" the five teens leaned forward in anticipation. Ben lifted the cover off the plate, revealing… "Nublar Grubs!" he said with enthusiasm. The others groaned in disgust. "Hand selected by yours truly." Ben picked up one of the grubs, and said, "Thank you for your sacrifice." More groans filled the boat as he ate it whole.
Ben moved the plate in front of each of his friends. When it got to Darius, the oldest teen looked at it, then back at the fruit. "I just want a piece of beef jerky. If this can get close to that taste, I will eat literally ANYTHING Ben gives me." The teen picked up one of the grubs.
Everyone looked at him in a mix of awe and disgust. Ben looked at him. "Do it." he said with a grin.
"Alright. Calm down Emperor Palpatine." Darius took one last look at the grub. He closed his eyes, and flung the insect in his mouth. He bit down, and was met with a weird taste. Everyone groaned again. Once he was done swallowing, he shuddered. "Ugh. The movie got it wrong. It's all slimy. No satisfaction whatsoever."
Ben gave them a look of disappointment. "How you all survived, I will NEVER understand."
The youngest teen set the plate down on the table and sat down next to Yaz. Sammy spoke up. "Okay. No tears or goodbyes until we're seated on the plane. But can I just say, look at us? Six months ago, we started as campers. Now, we're-"
"Immortals." Ben interrupted.
"Survivors?" Brooklynn added.
"Exhausted." Kenji said.
"Craving steak." Darius quipped. Everyone gave him a strange look. "Oh. Have I been living with vegans these last few months?"
Sammy rolled her eyes. "I was going to say 'soul mates.' But I guess all of those things are true." Her smile came back a second later. "So, before we get off the boat, I'm gonna need you all to write down your emails, phone numbers, any and ALL social media deets, we need to coordinate our schedules to do weekly group check-ins, favorite flavor of cake, home addresses so I can send y'all random surprises. And for fun, your favorite memory of just the two of us."
Everyone smiled, and agreed to do just that. Kenji looked down at his plate. Empty? "Hey, who ate all my food?" He shot an accusing look at Darius.
"What are you looking at ME for?" Darius asked with a raised eye brow.
Yaz spoke up. "Maybe the boat is HAUNTED."
Sammy gasped at laughed. "No, Yaz. Don't even JOKE about that."
Ben had gotten up from his spot. Brooklynn teased, "No seasickness in you Ben? What happened, did the island beat it out of you?"
The boy gave a cocky smirk as he reached for the plate of grubs. "When you've seen the things I'VE seen, a little motion sickness won't- Hey! Who ate all the grubs?"
"Ugh, not if you PAID me." Brooklynn groaned.
Yaz agreed. "Literally nobody." Darius looked around. Maybe they just fell off the plate. A low growl was heard on the boat. The six teens leaned over the couch and saw a Compy. Everyone sighed in relief but also in frustration. "Of course. A stowaway." Yaz said.
"The LAST thing we need is the little bastard chewing on some wires." Darius told them.
As if the little dinosaur knew what they were thinking, it ran in the opposite direction. Yaz sighed as she stood up. "What do you guys say? Catch a Compy for old time's sake?"
Ben, Sammy, and Yaz chased after it. Brooklynn was about to when she noticed that Darius didn't. Looking back, she saw Darius trying to talk to Kenji. "Kenji, can we just talk? Please?"
Kenji just continued walking. "I should be at the controls. I'M trying to get us home."
Darius sighed. "I only did what Brooklynn told me to do. And how was Yaz and I supposed to fight off mercs?"
Kenji turned around and started getting in Darius's face. "You know, for once, when you have to do the right thing, I would like to see you put the group first instead of playing hero. Just ONCE!"
"What the fuck do you THINK I've been doing?" Darius said, losing his cool.
Brooklynn stepped up in between them. "Alright, BOTH of you STOP. THIS," she gestured to Darius and Kenji fighting. "is NOT going to help ANYBODY." Kenji shook his head, growled at Darius, and climbed back up the ladder to the bridge. Darius watched as he climbed the ladder. He let his frustration take over for a second, and punched the tinted window that lead to the living room area. Brooklynn flinched as the glass cracked. Darius took a step forward to follow Kenji, but Brooklynn grabbed his arm, and pulled him back. "Hey. You and I both know that you didn't do anything wrong. Deep down, I'm SURE he knows it too."
Darius sighed. "I think deep down, he's a bitch who needs to get his ass kicked to learn to keep his mouth shut."
"I'll talk to him, okay?" Brooklynn offered. "I speak Kenji."
"Don't you think I would be able to speak Kenji as well? I am slightly older than him." Darius asked.
"Do YOU know 45 different slang terms that, by themselves mean nothing, but together makes a twenty page essay?" Brooklynn countered.
Darius nodded. "Point taken."
"Coming through!" Ben's voice yelled. Brooklynn jumped back to the wall, and Darius saw the Compy coming towards them. The older teen reached, trying to grab the Compy, but he was met with Ben slamming a bucket on his head blocking his vision.
He let out a groan. "Did we get it?"
"No." Brooklynn and Ben said at the same time. The girl helped get the bucket off his head.
Yaz and Sammy came around the corner a few seconds later. "Where did it go?" Sammy asked. The four teens ran to the bow of the ship. The Compy stood on the railing, and started running when it saw them. The teens chased the Compy around the bow, and the deck. They lost track a few minutes later. When they got to the back of the boat, they saw a door was opened.
"Maybe it went in there?" Yaz suggested.
Darius nodded. "Ben, you stay on deck and guard the food. Sammy and Yaz, search the bedrooms. I'll search everywhere else." The oldest teen searched around the weapons room. He wasn't sure WHY the small dinosaur would go in THERE, but he might as well check everywhere. He saw a bunch of binoculars, and a bunch of guns. The guns littered the walls and ammo was spread out among selves. That reminded Darius. He was getting low on ammo. He grabbed a couple of magazines that fit his Glock and put them in his pockets. His shotgun also needed a little bit as well. He figure that paranoia had finally gotten ahold of him. He had gotten so used to carrying a gun around, it actually scared him. But he figured better to be safe than sorry. God, he was going to need some SERIOUS therapy when he got home.
Come to think of it, we ALL will. Low clicks brought Darius out of his thoughts. He looked carefully, and finally found the Compy hiding in the corner of the room. "Hello there." The Compy hissed at him. "Hey. Don't be like that." The two locked eyes with each other. "Come here!" Darius lunged at the Compy, but it once again dodged. Darius got back up and chased the little animal. He passed Yaz and Sammy in a bedroom. "Compy's headed for the deck!" he alerted them.
The three teens ran back up to the deck and met up with Ben. All the food was put away and the bags were up on the deck. "I put everything away and put the bags in one spot for me to watch." he explained.
"Good thinking. It's here somewhere." Darius said. "Everyone spread out."
As they ran to find the Compy, Sammy said, "I know we're in the middle of a dino chase, but y'all could take a sec to write down your deets, that would be-" The three teens continued to run. "Absolutely right. Later."
Ben grabbed the bucket, and everyone made it to the back of the boat again. Yaz was flanking it from it's left, Sammy on the right, and Darius and Ben up front. It had gotten into a box, and was munching happily on something. Unfortunately for it, that happiness was about to be destroyed. Darius motioned for Ben to put the bucket down. He and the others would be prepared to grab it if it jumped. As Ben stepped forward, the boat made a sudden stop. The teens made an all out effort to grab the dinosaur, but it was too fast again. And Ben AGAIN slammed the bucket on Darius's head.
Everyone groaned in pain. "Is that dumbass even looking where he's going?" Darius asked.
Ben shouted, "What happened?"
Kenji and Brooklynn came out and looked down at the others. "I don't know. I think the propellers are jammed. Someone needs to go down and check."
"Cap says that we're stuck in kelp." Brooklynn expands. "And in a kelp forest, you can bet that there's a shark."
Yaz got scared. "Sharks? Yeah, I'm gonna have to pass. Saw that movie Jaws as a kid. Really screwed with my mind."
Darius looked down at the water. He never lived in an area where sharks were a REASON to be scared. He looked up at the others and then Kenji. "I'll do it."
Kenji raised an eyebrow and scoffed. STILL trying to play the hero.
Darius looked for his bathing suite. He changed quickly, and put his Glock in a plastic bag. He got his shotgun out, and asked the three campers, "Who has experiance with a rifle?"
Sammy said, "Mama showed me how she would put down some of the cattle that got hurt or too sick."
Darius handed her the rifle. "Just in case. I don't want to have to fight off something with a KNIFE." The three campers found the rope they used a few days ago. They tied it around his waste. The oldest teen took out his knife. He took one last look at his friends, and one more look back at Brooklynn. Whatever it takes. Darius took a deep breath, and dove into the water.
The teen swam down to the propeller. He saw that Kenji was right. They were stuck in kelp. Darius got to the propeller, and started cutting some of the bigger pieces. Once he had those cleared, he moved the smaller pieces out of the way. The teen wasn't aware that his life line had suffered some damage from the Compy. He felt his lungs screaming for air. He broke the surface, and took a big breath. "Kenji was right about us being in kelp. I managed to clear it out of the way. Tell him to try moving forward. I'll stay in the water just in case." he shouted to Yaz and Ben.
The engine roared to life, and the boat moved forward. After a few seconds, Kenji yelled to the kids on the deck, "All systems go!" The teens cheered, and yelled to Darius that they were good.
Darius started to swim back to the boat. Brooklynn came out of the bridge, and yelled, "There's something in the water!" Yaz, Ben, and Sammy started pulling as hard and fast as they could.
Kenji came out, and stood next to Brooklynn with the telescope. He looked out, and saw a grey fin. "Shit shit SHIT! SHARK!"
"Get him out of there NOW!" Brooklynn yelled.
Darius started to pick up the pace. He made the mistake though of looking back. The teen started to panic when he saw the shark was closer than he thought. "Pull him in faster! The boat's drifting!" Ben said.
He was almost there. Ben's hand was right there! He reached to grab it, but he was stopped short. Darius tried to swim, but his leg was caught on kelp. The teen watched as the boat drifted further away from him. NOW Darius was starting to panic. It was a very weird sensation. You're physically moving your body, but you're not going anywhere. It was different from being on a treadmill. It might have been that his leg was actually being latched onto something. Or he was using his arms for movement. "Hang on! We still got you!" Yaz shouted.
They pulled on the rope some more. The three teens didn't know that the rope was damaged until it snapped. Darius was pulled underwater. He saw the kelp holding onto him. He swam up to get some air. He tried pulling on the kelp, but it wouldn't budge. He was treading water at this point. It was all he could do. But to make matters worse, a storm started rolling in. The wind was picking up, and the clouds were getting dark.
Darius risked going underwater again. He got out his knife, and swam down to cut the line. The kelp was moving in the water with him. And one of the pieces got caught on his arm. His eyes widened. The teen went for air again and was barely able to get his head up above the water. He someone swimming towards him from the boat.
"Kenji? Kenji! Help!" Water started to get into Darius's mouth. The teen in blue finally made it to Darius. He lifted up Darius by his shirt to help him stay on the surface. "Kenji, you're right. I'm sorry. I don't deserve her."
Kenji interrupted him. "Save it till AFTER we get to the boat." Darius nodded. "Did you try cutting it?"
"The knife is in my hand, but the kelp is too thick." Darius explained. As he was talking, the sea engulfed Darius and Kenji. The latter teen let go as he broke for air. He realized Darius was still under. He dove, and saw Darius struggling to get out. He was pulling and flailing. Kenji swam up in front of him, and gave him a look that said calm down. Darius nodded. Kenji grabbed the knife and started cutting. It was very hard though. And Darius was losing air. Kenji got his arm out, and started working on his leg. When he looked up to check on Darius, Kenji saw that his eyes weren't open. Kenji got to work even faster. Finally after what felt like forever, the kelp finally broke. Kenji grabbed Darius, and helped him up to the surface.
Sammy saw that they were up, and threw them a life doughnut. Kenji gripped on it tight as he hooked his arm on Darius. At least his head was out of the water. Yaz and Ben pulled as fast as they could. Sammy had grabbed the shotgun, and pointed it at the water. Kenji was afraid to look back. He didn't want to panic more than he had to. BAM! A bullet flew passed Kenji's head, and hit something with a thump.
Finally, the teens were back to the boat. As soon as Kenji and Darius were on the boat, Ben yelled for Brooklynn to drive as fast as she could. Kenji looked at Darius. He wasn't sure how long he had been without air. "Brooklynn! He needs CPR! Get down here!" Sammy yelled.
"Ben, take over for Brooklynn!" Kenji said.
The pink haired girl had gotten down to the deck. She pushed on Darius's chest a couple of times. Nothing happened. "Oh God." she muttered. Brooklynn closed her eyes, breathed in, and started giving him mouth to mouth. The last time someone was on the brink of death, Brooklynn had gotten hit by the Scorpius. Now, Darius was going to drown if they didn't work fast enough. A few more times of mouth to mouth, and Darius started to cough. Brooklynn helped Darius onto his side. He coughed up a lot of water. He groaned as his lungs replaced the water with air. She rubbed his back as he calmed down.
Darius looked up, and his eyes landed on Kenji. "You got me out. Thank you."
Kenji smiled. "Of course. We're brothers, right? We'll always be brothers, and we're ALWAYS going to come back for each other. I'm sorry for what I said."
The two teens hugged each other. "Me too." Darius said. A flash of lighting and the sound of thunder broke up the moment. "Oh shit." Darius got up, and started heading to the deck. "Kenji, take the wheel. Tell Ben to go down to the weapons room, grab three binoculars, and meet us on the deck. Sammy, Yaz, secure the bags. Once you're finished, go to the bridge with Kenji. Brooklynn, after I get changed, we're going to help Kenji steer the boat."
It was an hour later that the storm had turned. They had been caught and were battling rain and rough seas. Darius, Ben, and Brooklynn were holding onto the railings on the bow of the ship. "You guys see anything?!" he yelled to Ben.
"Nothing!" Ben yelled back. When he looked at Brooklynn, she shook her head.
Darius yelled, "Just keep looking for the horizon!" Darius took out the walkie talkie that Ben had found. "Kenji! How are you guys doing? Still headed East?"
Kenji groaned in response. "Doing great! I LOVE battling high seas when I'm trying to get home! The storm is throwing us in all different directions, but we SEEM to be headed to "
"We still have a ways to go!" Darius told him. "The storm doesn't seem to be letting up, but we'll let you know when we find something!"
They kept going. The seas still gave them a hard time. Ben looked through the binoculars. They had been out on the water since eight AM. They had to come across land SOME time. Right? As he turned back to Darius, he saw something in the distance. Trees? A beach? "Darius! Look to Port Side!" Darius put his binoculars up. "What do you see?!"
Darius wiped his binoculars, thinking it was a dream. He looked again, and saw it was no dream. He took out his walkie talkie again. "Kenji! We found land! Port side, ten o'clock! Maybe ten thirty!"
"Say again?" Kenji asked. "You found land?!"
Darius looked up at the bridge. "Yes! Now steer this bitch to ten o'clock Port side! We're almost home!"
The six teens cheered. Kenji steered the boat where Darius told him. The boat started to turn towards the land. Darius and the other cheered. A half an hour later, they were almost there. They looked to be about a hundred yards out at most. A thought suddenly came to Darius. He remembered that certain areas of the Isla Nublar, there were some parts that were surrounded by rocks. He put up the binoculars up, and looked for a minute. He found what he had missed. "Kenji! Turn to three o'clock, hard to starboard!" Darius yelled. He felt the boat turn. They made the three o'clock turn, and started moving away from the rocks. But if Darius had spotted the rocks a minute earlier, they might have made it around.
Darius turned to Brooklynn and Ben. "BRACE!" The stern hit, causing Darius to lose his balance. He slid down the deck of the boat towards the railing. He tried to grab anything to keep himself from going over. He stopped sliding down when something caught his wrist. He looked up, and saw Brooklynn holding onto him. They pulled each other up, and helped Ben. "Everybody okay?"
Kenji answered, "We're okay up here. We're coming down to you."
"I'm going to check how bad it is." Darius told Brooklynn. The teen walked down to the stern, but stopped halfway. He stepped in six inches of water. He ran back up. "Grab the bags! We gotta get off this thing!"
"What do you mean?" Kenji asked.
Darius explained, "This thing is going to sink. We've got a few minutes tops." Darius grabbed the bag of food and ammo. Darius made sure he had his pistol. It was still in the plastic bag. He stuffed the magazines he grabbed in the plastic bag with the gun, and slung the bag on his shoulder. "Women and children first!"
Brooklynn looked at him with confusion. "Um, we're ALL children."
"Oh, I forgot." Darius remembered. "Every one for themselves!" Yaz and Ben jumped first. Darius saw that the water was rising, meaning they were sinking. Sammy and Kenji went next, and swam to catch up with the first two. Brooklynn looked down the railing. Darius saw that she looked nervous, and grabbed her hand. They looked at each other, and Darius squeezed her hand in comfort. She took in a deep breath. They both jumped together. Once they broke for air, they immediately started swimming to their friends. Yaz and Ben were already helping Kenji and Sammy up. After a quick swim, Darius and Brooklynn were on the shore.
The six teens collapsed on the beach. They laid there for who knows how long. But all they knew was that it was going to get dark soon. Brooklynn sat up, and looked at Darius. "You good?"
He sighed. "I'm so tired. And I STILL don't have that steak I ordered."
Sammy sighed. "Alright, now THIS has to be a dream." Everyone looked at the island in front of them.
Brooklynn was the first to state the obvious. "This does NOT look like Costa Rica."
The wind started to pick up. With no hoodies to keep themselves warm, they needed to take shelter soon. "Maybe we should hole up in the cave up ahead?" Ben pointed.
Darius saw the cave, picked up the bag, and the others started to walk towards it. He reached in, and took out one of the flashlights they managed to scavenge. The light shined into the cave. It was a little unsettling. "Maybe we SHOULDN'T go in there. It's not looking very promising." Sammy suggested.
"Can't be any worse than where we've been." Kenji said.
Darius looked back at him. "You say that now." The kids sighed and headed into the cave. They walked in for a little bit. The flashlight was the only thing keeping them calm. What was very strange about this cave was that they haven't come into a fork in the road. They walked a little bit more, and decided that they would stop and eat. Darius unpacked a can of fruit, and they passed the peaches around each other. "The storm threw us off course most likely." Darius got to thinking. "I don't know how far, but I would imagine that we either weren't going in the right direction from the start, or the storm did most of the dirty work."
"Cam we think about this later?" Yaz asked. "Right now, I just want to lay down. I don't have the energy to think."
Darius nodded. "Alright. I'll take first watch. Kenji, I'll wake you up for the next watch in a few hours." Kenji nodded in understanding.
As usual, Darius and Brooklynn were the last ones awake. It was pretty comforting to Darius. "You think we landed in Costa Rica?" she asked him,
"I'm not sure." Darius admitted. "We need to figure that out tomorrow."
Brooklynn nodded. "Well, at least we are no longer on Isla Nublar."
Darius chuckled. "Yeah. At least we got THAT going for us." Darius checked the watch again. "I'm going to wake up Kenji in a few hours. Get some rest."
And there we go. I feel bad about giving such a short chapter, but my insomnia was acting up. Actually, I don't REALLY think I have insomnia. I have a Coke addiction. The soda kind. Not the drug kind. Anyways, hope you guys have a good day, or evening if you're up right now, and stay home, stay safe.
