Chapter 10 [Camelot]

Arthur glared out the window. His eyes took in his father's subjects' hustle. Urgency reminded them all through waning daylight and lengthening shadows. Still neither Gwen or Merlin was anywhere to be seen.

Merlin….

Arthur rolled his eyes. Confinement ate at him. Priorities awaited him. Still he endured Uther's tactics. Arguments echoed off of the passage's walls concerning the unwanted marriage. If Merlin was still here, he'd have bumbled his way to some idea. I cannot believe that I have to rely on him THAT MUCH! Ugh! He shook his head over Merlin's plans and ideas….

…still he didn't prattle on about silver and polishing. Nor was there a distinct chocolate spot in the middle of his face…quite unlike George….

Merlin and Gwen could show that ninny how to work and be a real person! He….

Gwen….

He rubbed his forehead. Pain stabbed at his heart. Desire tugged his eyes into another survey to no avail. Where is she? Surely Father did not do anything! He clenched his teeth and fists.

The door's lock clicked. The barrier swung open.

Leon walked into the room. "Begging your pardon, Sire." He bowed to the Prince.

Arthur motioned with his hand for the latter to rise. "Please tell me you have good news, Leon."

Leon frowned. "That depends. Gwen and Merlin are not in Camelot. The King wants you to lead a patrol."

"Indeed, Sir Leon. Thank you." Uther strode into the chamber. "I believe it is for the best."

"What is for the best, Sire?" Arthur nodded to his father.

"The way everything is working out. Arthur, you may not believe this. You have to act like a Prince and not some boy. Some day hopefully you will succeed me as King. When you do, people will look to you to act in that fashion. You have to command respect. You must look the part of a good ruler. Actions can convince those around us."

"I believe I know how to do that, Father." Arthur shook his head.

"Oh I know you think you do. You have convinced yourself that the servant is worthy. She is not!" Uther brought his fist down on the table.

"There are the Capability Laws, Father. Gwen has her three tasks." Arthur shrugged. "You refuse to see that."

"I will determine if those are worthy or not!" Uther bit back. Storm brewed in his eyes.

"How can you talk about commanding respect, Father, when you are being hypocritical? One minute you speak of the law and perception. The next you refuse anything in that law that undermines our position." Arthur shook his head. "Look at Merlin! For all of his bumbling and gibberish, his loyalty to Camelot was without question!"

"You watch your tongue!" Crimson streaked across Uther's face. "I AM STILL YOUR KING!" He breathed in and out. "Since you need more time to yourself, I will lead a patrol out toward the north bridge with Nemeth. When the Princess and I return, you will greet her properly! The servant is no longer here! Sir Leon and the other knights will make sure you do not wander off." His eyes shot daggers at Leon for emphasis.

Leon bowed his head. He didn't dare to make eye contact with Arthur.

"Fine. Father, I can do my diplomatic duty and escort her back here safely." Arthur nodded to Uther once more. "If you will excuse me, I need to get my armor on before my departure."

"Nay, Arthur. I would rather you remain here. Think on your entire duty to Camelot as well, Arthur. You will marry Princess Mithian!" Uther shook his head. He hustled out of the chamber.

Leon bowed. He rushed out and closed the door behind himself.

Arthur frowned. Embarrassment reddened his face. Indignation burned inside of himself. He knew where Obligation wanted him to go. Amor and Diplomacy tugged him in different directions.

Duty had different meanings for his father and him it seemed….
