Without an honest heart as compass

Dean knows he's damaged goods. He's not someone who easily falls into a certain category. He's more than a brother to Sam, less than a son to his father. Hell, he practically raised Sammy from the crib, because their father was never around to do much but tell him watch over Sammy, Dean, keep him safe, before he was out the door on another hunt.

He doesn't define himself the way other people define themselves. He doesn't really see himself as his own person, but more this is Sammy's and this is Dad's and this is Mom's. He'd do anything for his family, because he's theirs, totally and completely. He's his father's soldier, his brother's protector, his mother's son. His mother's avenger.

His life began and ended on the night of the fire. He'd do anything for his family, because they're all he has left, the only thing he can cling to in a fractured world.

Dean just wonders why he isn't the same to them.
