Vilkas was silent that unlike him. Considering that Terra was doing this as a favor to him, she would have thought that he would at least explain why.
They had made a day's travel in half of the time and they had left in the night so no one interrupted them when they left the town.
Terra eyed him quiet curiosity. He was more talkative than his brother. When they traveled together he was often spouting facts and events from history that happened around the areas they had been to. She wondered if he took her comment of humility to heart or if there were other things troubling him. The reason she assumed he was troubled was because of the furrowed brow and distance he kept between them.
Maybe he was actually trying to stay away from the smell of the witch's head; she looked down in her arms. The thing was ugly and the smell was even more grotesque. She was hung up on the smell when she had cured herself but now it seemed like it was getting worse, though she could see no decomposition of the head in the jar, maybe the dark magic that this witch had actually was getting stronger with the aging of the death. She shook her head at the thought. That thought seemed like the reverse of what she had been taught and thinking this would lead to other theories that maybe would undo magic theory altogether. This preoccupation of her mind was a good thing as it distracted from the quiet.
"Is something the matter, Harbinger?" Vilkas asked. Terra had almost run into him as he had stopped to ask her the question. When she looked up to meet his eyes, he turned away from her.
"I was just running some magic theories in my mind," she answered honestly.
"Oh…" he whispered as he looked everywhere but at her.
"We will be going back to the burial site, so we will need to go through the snow covered mountains that way," Terra explained as she pointed the direction he hadn't been looking toward. "I am sure you remember the sacred place."
"Yes, I remember," he said now staring at the mountains. "Do you need to rest?"
Terra thought about it and shook her head. "It would be better to make it to the mountains. We can get better coverage and I believe there is a river running through there so that can attempt to keep this smell at bay."
Vilkas simply just nodded at her comment and began walking again.
Terra watched him. The man before her was not as built as his brother. Farkas wielded a two handed weapon, Vilkas worked with one handed swords. The way they worked the weapons showed through their shoulders and arms. Vilkas was not as broad as Farkas, but that did not mean he was any less of a fighter. On some levels he could be a little better than his brother just because he did not run into a fight but plotted out his actions to not waste his chances at a critical strike. They were often found sparing each other in the yard of the Companion's house. In the end of their training practices and their training sessions they were stale mated.
"How is the group doing?" Terra asked to fill the silence that had slowly driven her to think of places she did not want to think about.
"For the most part everyone is fine. You would know this if you would…" Vilkas growled at Terra as he spoke. "You send us instructions and work jobs that cast us all in extremely positive light. You even provide for most of those who cannot work anymore. You go off and kill dragons, bring us armor that you forge with our blacksmith and better our weapons with your skills. Do see the problem here?"
Terra listened with interest. It was not often that any one got angry at her. She didn't really feel that he was angry at her but frustrated at the situation. "Vilkas, I do what I need to make sure that our group is successful. The fact that I do this is just as Kodlak did I am sure."
"This isn't about Kodlak, may he rest where he is happily," Vilkas answer, "The fact is you do all this alone. You are part of a group. We are all here for each other. Yes, you are the Harbinger but that does not mean what Kodlak did in the past was the best option."
Terra glared, "Is this because I am a female?"
Vilkas didn't say anything for a moment. He seemed to be thinking on what to say. He opened his mouth a few times before continuing, "No, the issue is that we are a team. We all cannot to everything alone. You may be successful at working hard and getting our jobs done alone but you will get to something that will happen and you will not succeed by yourself. Even Kodlak realized that in the end. He came to you didn't he?" He turned away from her and walked away.
Terra stared at Vilka's back, "He did."
"He came to you because he trusted you, believed in you. Even though you were new to the group, he came to you. You are special but just because of that doesn't mean you need to do everything alone," Vilkas explained as he turned to look back at her.
Terra said nothing to what he said. She didn't really want to see where this was leading. She was fine on her own. She kept everyone away because of her past and that wasn't going to change now, especially since she was dragon born. She had too much that would kill all these people if anyone knew she cared for them all.
"Terra," Vilkas asked softly, Terra almost missed her name.
"Yes?" she was curious.
"Why Farkas?" Vilkas was now looking at her.
Terra shifted uncomfortably from where she was standing and moved ahead of him. "He was there," she answered.
"That's it?" Vilkas was digging for something.
"It was sex," Terra answered. It hurt to say it that way. It really hadn't been just that. Farkas had made her feel alive. The passion that passed between the two of them was amazing, but for everyone involved she needed to be neutral about everything including the twins.
"It does not seem to be the same case for…" Vilkas tried to continue.
"Vilkas, what happened between your brother and I is just that, between us," Terra cut him off.
Vilkas looked shaken by Terra's tone.
"Let us continue and focus on you right now," Terra tried to forget everything else. "We will need to make sure that you want to do this. Once this happens there is no fixing it again. Do you understand?"
Vilkas looked at her, "I have thought of this long and hard. I am tired and wish to be able to rest again. Being acute to everything around me is wonderful for the job but I am an animal. I don't want to be that anymore."
"Animals can be freer then ourselves at times, especially when it comes to our instincts," Terra responded off handedly. She wanted to make sure that this is what we wanted for sure.
"Yes and no, it isn't freedom if we don't choose. It is a reaction from our flight or fight senses," Vilkas responded quickly.
Terra didn't turn back to look at him. Her eyes were tracing the light of the sun that was coming over the edges of the mountains. She felt as if the darkness in her was being washed away for a moment, everything that she was, and all the secrets are gone for a single moment.
Vilkas watched her. She could see him as he was holding his breath as he watched her. Was there something strange about the way she looked at the moment? Well of course with a head in her hands everything was off for her. She shook free of the pleasure she had washed over herself and stepped toward the mountains. She had a favor to fulfill.
"If I was to rely on that animal instinct right now," he started and moved closer to Terra. He lend so that he was near her and whispered, "If I was truly that animal I am trying to rid of, I would take advantage of the girl who has let her guard down. I would make her mine and be damn if it hurt anyone. With the look on her face right now, it shows a creature that needs to be held and taken care of… if I was the animal that I relied on before; I would take charge and protect her for myself." Vilkas brushed against Terra for a moment before he took the lead. Now that he knew where they were heading he would be the guide through the forest that he had run as a werewolf.
