The number of empty bottles laying about gave evidence to the lateness of the hour, yet the men still sat around the table, none refusing to leave although few were still in the game. The stakes had risen with each deal of the cards until only two remained.

Jack picks up the cards dealt him and stares. Frowning, he closes his eyes taking a deep breath. "I shall see you and," he pushes a pile of coins into the center looking speculatively at the other man. "And double that."

The other man looked at his cards then sighed. "I've no money to meet that."

"Ah, but you do have a ship," A glint in his eyes, Jack suggests his face now a mask.

Nodding, "Aye," he pauses and stares at his cards, thinking of those that had been played. He looks across the table at the other, is he bluffing? He must be, there wasn't the chance to have a better set of cards. "The ship then," He laid out his cards, a hand worthy of the bet.

The onlookers gasp and begin to whisper.

Jack silenced them as he grinned and laid out his cards, clearly the winner. "I do believe I now own a ship!"
