A/N: So, just a few things regarding what people have said:
Q. Why is Suzuki acting so nice?
Even in the original Overlord, when Suzuki is an undead Overlord, he still wouldn't ignore someone being killed right in front of him. He did save Carne Village and many other people even in that form. Right now he is a human which would make this far more likely.
He also isn't prioritizing people outside of Nazarick though- there's a reason that the Fourth Legion is half-staffed. He would just prefer not to kill random innocents if possible and would have no problem having them being pulled out of combat and healed (so long as it doesn't interfere with his own goals, eg, using up too much mana), which I think is well within his character. If given a choice of course, he would save people within Nazarick.
Q. Why doesn't he have Nazarick farm large monster hordes?
Just like in the original novel, right now Suzuki has no idea regarding the New World's power levels. He would be even more cautious in this instance as he knows there is an alternate levelling system which he has no clue of, which is why he's playing it safe and not slaughtering large monster hordes. Joining the Adventurer's Guild is a part of that and gaining information. It's only been about a week since he's come there, after all.
He's staying put for the same reason that he didn't send out his forces to conquer the New World on day one of the original anime/light novel- though you could argue that would've succeeded.
Regarding the spell/skill [Turn Undead] though the wording doesn't make much sense the fact is that's how it's written as in the original novel so I'm going with it. [Turn Undead] is actually how it's written in D&D also, so for some reason they wrote the spell as that.
Team Satisfaction walked into the Adventurer's Guild.
It was now bright morning, so there was some activity in the place
Team Satisfaction ignored most of it to get to the Guildmaster's Quarters.
There, Ainzach, the guildmaster of the Adventurer's Guild, was waiting for them.
"Welcome, welcome," he said. He had been a famous adventurer back in his day, but was long since retired. "I wished to congratulate you in person regarding last night's incident- and I would also like to hear your report in person."
Suzuki went ahead and narrated the events of the night- omitting certain details and changing the story so it made more sense. He told Ainzach that they had just happened to be walking around the cemetery when they saw the commotion happening there and decided to help.
Albedo and Shalltear interjected at the end only to say that most of the work had been done by Suzuki and basically just fangirling over how cool he was.
Given that Suzuki had done basically nothing, in his own head at least, he found this to be rather uncomfortable. He was well versed with bosses who would take credit for other people's work, and had no desire to become one of them.
"I must say, it is rather interesting," Ainzach said, examining Suzuki. "Is it true that you fought using only a shield for a weapon?"
"Yes," Suzuki said.
"Are you from the Empire, perhaps?" Ainzach asked.
"Uh, no," Suzuki said. "We come from a faraway land- have you ever heard of the country of Melromarc?"
"I can't say I have," Ainzach said after considering the name. "I was just wondering because I know of another warrior by the name of Nazami Enec who fights using only shields- though he wielded two of them as far as I recall. He is currently one of the Empire's Four Knights, if I remember correctly."
"Really?" Suzuki asked. He made a mental note to ask for more information about him. He really wanted to know how it was that anyone fought with two shields because he really felt that he could use some pointers.
"Well, based on your accomplishments," Ainzach said. "I do believe it is appropriate to promote Team Satisfaction to the rank of an Orichalcum level team."
Suzuki was honestly hoping for an Admantite level promotion, but he supposed he couldn't complain with what he had gotten for now.
"Hmm..." Nfirea said. "That's interesting."
Suzuki had taken the cough potion that he had made to a nearby alchemist only to find that he knew the assistant- Nfirea was the boy he had rescued the night before.
Nfirea was recovering, but after talking to the boy Suzuki realized that the boy really was talented when it came to making potions. He got into discussing potion recipes with him, and after Nfirea took a look at Suzuki's cough potion, he invited Suzuki to Carne Village where the two of them began experimenting with plants they could find together.
The thing was that Suzuki realized given how he was levelling up, he would not be even close to the level of the other fighters in Nazarick anytime soon. As such, he figured it was a more rewarding path of inquiry for him to focus on making potions.
He found himself making a strange light blue potion after a bit of experimentation- his first successful one since the cough potion.
His skills in potion evaluation then revealed what it did and he quickly wanted to find a way to hide it.
He had managed to create a "male vitality potion" so to speak- or the magical equivalent of viagra, that is to say. Except based on the potion's description it would also "increase one's stamina, virility, and vitality, and also better the experience of the other partner" but before Suzuki could hide it completely, Nfirea had already appraised it with magic.
"Oh," Nfirea said. "Do you mind telling me the recipe for how you made that?" He then realized what it must've sounded like he was saying and added, "Uh, for research purposes that is."
"What?" Suzuki asked.
"I mean to say- people would pay a lot of money for a potion like this," Nfirea said. "The market share could be huge!"
"Ah, uh, right," Suzuki said and then showed Nfirea the paper where he was writing down the ingredients and various recipes he had made.
"Um, I'm sorry- but I can't read any of this," Nfirea said.
"Ah, right," Suzuki said and told him the recipe given the boy couldn't read Japanese.
For some reason, Nfirea could never make potions of the quality that Suzuki could, even when Suzuki handed him herbs whose quality had been improved by one of his shield's abilities. It most likely had something to do with some other shield ability he had unlocked.
Nfirea ended up with a dark orange potion in spite of using the same ingredients and following Suzuki's recipe exactly. It was still rather useful, Nfirea concluded, but not as good as what Suzuki had made.
"But, Suzuki-dono, if you'll keep making that kind of potion, I could find buyers for it easily," Nfirea said.
Suzuki's ears perked up at the business opportunity- while it was true that he could earn gold through adventuring, he was looking for new sources of revenue. He wouldn't sell anything very useful like a healing potion, but he supposed no one in Nazarick really needed this kind of potion.
So, he spent the next couple of hours making a few more, having made forty in total.
He then once again set about finding new recipes. He would occasionally add in some items from Yggdrasil, and had come up with a variety of potions he had never seen before in Yggdrasil. He had made medicine which worked like an oral contraceptive pill (Nfirea told him that would also be a bestseller), medicine specifically for fever or other symptoms, and herbicides.
Nfirea and Suzuki then tallied up the total for the day before hitting the hay.
"Um, a few potions seem to be missing," Nfirea said. It seemed that a few of the 'vitality potions' that Suzuki had made earlier were gone.
"Albedo- did someone take a few of the potions there?" Suzuki asked.
"No, Momonga-sama," Albedo said. "The number of them hasn't changed at all- perhaps the two of you are simply misremembering things? As it is no one has been near them aside from myself."
Nfirea and Suzuki were both sure that there had been more, but neither of them had made an exact count before so they couldn't exactly refute what Albedo was saying and decided to drop the matter.
Albedo had accompanied him to Carne village to act as a guard, and there were also other members of Nazarick in the shadows around them, while Shalltear was still in E-Rantel checking to see if any good quests worthy of them ever opened up. Aura had taken her place as one of Suzuki's guards, though she stayed out of sight in the forests surrounding the village and monitored the greater area rather than sticking with Suzuki.
Suzuki didn't make much progress in the next few days until one time, he got frustrated enough to just add a potion from Yggdrasil to his shield, and with a little fiddling came out with something quite new.
According to his screen, it was called the 'Elixir of Yggdrasil'- which perked up his interest as it was the first item he had come across with the name of the original game in it. Based on its effect, it seemed to be roughly equivalent to a fourth tier healing spell- in other words, it was more than twice as good as one of Yggdrasil's red potions. Not only that, it had effects beyond simply restoring HP, in that it would also heal status afflictions like 'diseased' and the such.
"Amazing!" Nfirea said, looking at the potion. "This is simply incredible! Suzuki-dono, how did you manage to make this?"
"Uh," Suzuki said. "I'm not entirely sure." The potion's description mentioned that it was the equivalent of the sap of a sacred tree, probably leading to its name, so there was probably another way to make it aside from what he had done.
There existed somethings known as "Talents" in this world that didn't exist in Yggdrasil. One in a couple hundred people were born with one, and from what Suzuki could gather they were special latent abilities. Some of them were rather useless in a combat sense- like being able to predict tomorrow's weather with seventy percent accuracy. Others, like that of Nfirea, which allowed one to equip any item regardless of usage requirements, could be extremely overpowered in the right circumstances.
For example, if Nfirea were to get his hands on a World Item, or even a Divine Item, the boy could easily wreak havoc on this world.
Suzuki had explained away his strange potions as a natural Talent that he himself had which increased the quality of the potions he made- something Nfirea mostly bought.
But if Suzuki kept flaunting around these kinds of things even Nfirea would rapidly become suspicious.
"Alright then," Suzuki said, pocketing it away. He had hidden a good portion of his findings from the alchemist, but he had not had enough time with this to be able to do so convincingly. "I think we need to be returning to E-Rantel now, Albedo." From what he had gathered, he had achieved all he could from being in this village and it was best to slip away before more questions were raised. "I'll talk to you about the profits when you return to E-Rantel, Nfirea-san."
"Um, but wait I-" Nfirea began, so Suzuki quickly redirected.
"Eh! Hello Enri!" Suzuki said to someone standing behind Nfirea, causing the alchemist to lose his composure and whip around. By the time he recovered, Suzuki said, "Oh no, I must've been mistaken- it must've been someone else. Anyway, see you later!"
Suzuki sighed as he reached the Sixth Floor of Nazarick- his true destination. That had been a close one.
"So, Aura, did everything go as planned?" Suzuki asked.
"Yup," Aura said, pointing to a large bag next to her. "All the plants that Momonga-sama ordered!"
"Good, good," Suzuki said. He didn't want to hop on by Carne Village all the time when he needed them, and it was important for Nazarick to grow its own stock here on the Sixth Floor. "Call in Mare, would you?" The druid's weather changing and soil-enriching abilities would be quite valuable for this project.
"Mare! Get over here!" Aura shouted out.
The boy appeared, and after adjusting his skirt he walked up to Suzuki and bowed. "G-Good morning, Momonga-sama!"
"Right, I need to do a few tests here," Suzuki said.
He examined to so-called Elixir of Yggdrasil again and overall found it rather underwhelming. Because it had the name of 'Yggdrasil' in it he had assumed that it was going to be some sort of incredible concoction, and granted, it was far superior to any other potion that he could make, but on the other hand a fourth tier healing spell wasn't all too impressive in his eyes. Many denizens of Nazarick could achieve something similar with ease.
It made him wonder about whether or not this potion was something related to the game Yggdrasil- unlikely, the devs probably would've made such an item far more powerful. Was it part of Raphtalia's world then- in which case was it something akin to an Easter Egg the Yggdrasil devs had added to their new game? Or was it something like the Talents of this world and not native to either?
"I'm ready, Momonga-sama," Mare said.
In Yggdrasil, one could add many effects to plants by using druidic spells/skills. For example, one could create tomatoes which granted certain stat boosts when eaten, or would deal area of effect damage to enemies, or would secrete toxins into the air.
What you couldn't do however, was change a tomato into something else- an ability that it seemed that only Suzuki's shield had. Suzuki even found, after adding in some seeds from carnivorous plants on the Sixth Floor that he could combine the traits of various plants with each other to some extent using a form of genetic engineering.
He remembered Blue Planet once talking to him about how far genetic engineering of plants had come along, and how there were some ideas thrown around to create plants who could survive even under radiation and other extreme conditions, but ultimately these ideas were not cost-effective and scrapped. Still, one could do things like combine a plant which grew medicinal leaves with a plant that grew medicinal roots to create a single plant hybrid that would grow both at the same time, saving land area and on costs. Suzuki did something similar to that with some of the plants Aura had collected.
In addition to that, he could modify several of their characteristics involving parameters such as Growth, Mutation, and Intelligence. He had little idea as to what these did so he just tampered with them a little.
The resulting farm on the Sixth Floor was only possible thanks to Mare's spells and Suzuki's new abilities, and was soon the talk of Nazarick.
"What a wonderful farm you have made, Momonga-sama," Demiurge told Suzuki one day. "Truly a garden worthy of the Supreme Beings!"
"It's mostly possible thanks to Mare's spells accelerating their growth cycles," Suzuki said. One could grow crops in as short a time as twelve hours- of course, the game devs would not program in realistic times for plants to grow in the game and thankfully that carried over to this world, at least when it came to magical crops.
"Nonsense- it is only thanks to your oversight of the project that it is so successful," Demiurge said. "I intend to incorporate such management techniques into my own farmwork."
"Hmm?" Suzuki asked, surprised. Did Demiurge like farming? Was there something like that mentioned in his character biography? Suzuki certainly didn't remember. "Are you interested in farming, Demiurge?"
"It would be more accurate to call it uh, a ranch, so to speak," Demiurge said. "In order to alleviate our need for parchment for scrolls, that is."
"Ah, I see," Suzuki said, tacitly greenlighting the project.
The week after that passed with little new happening. Team Satisfaction had found a new quest- that of killing a nearby Giant Basilisk which Shalltear accomplished by drawing it out using her Familiars and then bombarding it with magic.
This had gotten the three members of Team Satisfaction Adamantite plates, and had resulted in Suzuki gaining even more XP.
Suzuki Satoru
Level 28 [+12 Yggdrasil Levels]
He was still not nearly strong enough to stand on his own though.
"Momonga-sama," Shalltear asked him back at the Shining Golden Pavilion. "Why don't we try to level up more aggressively? We could annihilate the surrounding cities and max out the amount of XP we get."
Once she had gained twenty-five levels in this other system, she had reported that she felt like she indeed was somewhat stronger. Suzuki was happy about this- but alarmed about it as well. This meant that there were potentially enemies in this world who were stronger than even a level one hundred NPC from Yggdrasil.
For example, he had heard of a group known as the Six Gods worshipped by the Slane Theocracy who had lived six hundred years ago. If they had had six hundred years to level up, it was possible one of them could be level one hundred in the alternate levelling system as well. It was thought that the Six Gods were dead, but Suzuki could not rely on that. It was even a possibility that this alternate levelling system went beyond one hundred and there were level ten thousand enemies lurking around somewhere.
Not to mention he had barely had enough time to learn about the alternate skills and abilities of this world.
"Shalltear," Suzuki said while stirring the pot, "we can't go around doing that. First of all, the humans here may have necessary information. Think of Nfirea- if we had not rescued him our knowledge of potions would be far inferior to what it is now. Second of all, we can't be sure that we are the only powerful creatures in the world. There is a different leveling system in this world, as well as things like Martial Arts and Talents which we don't know about completely. There could be a Talent in this world which could easily threaten us. We have made progress with our intelligence gathering as adventurers, but there are still gaps in our knowledge."
For one, Demiurge had been mostly successful in torturing the captured members of the Sunlight Scripture, but there was a limited amount of questions they were able to ask before the members died. All of them were now dead, and while Suzuki had a better idea of the Theocracy's power, there were still missing pieces to the puzzle. He could also not be sure that the Sunlight Scripture members even knew all about the Theocracy's power in the first place.
Also, for some reason their corpses vanished upon death, and there weren't enough of them left to dissect to find out why that was happening. Suzuki himself had no ideas on that matter.
"Ah, understood," Shalltear said and lowered her head.
"Raise your head," Suzuki said, setting his instruments aside. "It's ready!"
"What kind of potion have you made, Momonga-sama?" Sebas asked him.
"It's no potion," Suzuki said. "I'm cooking. This is a soup I made from ingredients from the Sixth Floor."
The three Floor Guardians began to protest.
"Momonga-sama, there is no need for you to do such things!" Sebas said. "You should have asked me, or any of the maids!"
"Indeed, the ruler of Nazarick should not be cooking like a common servant," Albedo said.
"Relax," Suzuki said. "I just wanted to see what I could make. Some of the shields I had have bonuses to food cooked and quality, so I wished to test it out. As it is, there are few within Nazarick who can cook so I might as well put myself to use." There was little he could do combat-wise, so he wanted to do something at the very least that would help out the others in some way. "Here- why not try some?"
Undead normally couldn't eat, but vampires were an exception. Albedo and Sebas took a bowl too.
Suzuki took a spoonful and thought it was good- but not as good as what he was used to being served.
"This is amazing!" Shalltear said.
"Indeed, I believe Suzuki-sama's cooking talent exceeds that of Sous-chef's," Sebas said.
"Without a doubt!" Albedo said, wings trembling.
Suzuki tentatively took another sip and had to say that he overall disagreed with them- Sous-chef certainly cooked better. But, he assumed that they were just saying so to cheer him up. If the company CEO brought brownies to the office one day, of course no one would openly complain if they tasted bad.
There was one way to find the truth though.
"Raphtalia!" Suzuki called out as he returned to Nazarick.
"Yes, Shield Hero!" a face said which popped out from a door.
"There you are," Suzuki said. "Here, I wanted you to try some of this."
"Uh..." Raphtalia said. She was wearing a white dress with green ivy patterns on it.
"It's vegetable soup, nothing else," Suzuki said.
"Okay," Raphtalia said, slowly taking a sip, being careful not to scald her tongue. "It's pretty good."
"Do you think this is better, or the one that Sous-chef makes?" Suzuki asked.
Raphtalia tapped her foot for a while before saying, "The one Sous-chef makes."
That confirmed it for Suzuki- the others had been lying just so that he could save face. Either that, or the fact that he had made the soup himself had somehow affected their perception of its taste.
What he didn't know was that it was actually the result of two things: One, a residual effect of the Guildmaster Shield, and two, the effect of his Yggdrasil levels in the Guildmaster job class. These two things granted a boost to his cooking, as a matter of fact, to any buffing magic/skill he used, so long as it was on another guild member. As such, while what Suzuki had made was otherwise inferior in quality to the food made in Nazarick, those two buffs more than compensated for it.
Raphtalia, who was not a guild member, also did not experience this added effect along with him and so agreed that it wasn't as good as the other food.
"Um, why are you asking, Shield Hero?" Raphtalia asked.
"Nothing, just wanted to confirm something," Suzuki said. "Anyway, I'll be going now- but how have things been for you lately?"
"Good!" Raphtalia said.
"Great," Suzuki said and wandered off to go make some more potions from stuff he would harvest from the Sixth Floor. This was a job that only he could do, so he was rather proud of it. If all he could do for now was play a supporting role on the team, he would do so with utmost gusto. He raised his Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown, but as he began to teleport he noticed strange symbols appearing on his screen.
Summoning Ritual In Progress!
To the east of the Kingdom of Re-Estize lay the Empire of Baharuth.
In the Imperial Palace at Arwintar, the capital, a meeting was going on, with the central figure of attraction being an old man.
This old man was Fluder Paradyne, the most powerful magic caster in all the Empire, and arguably, as far as those present were concerned, the whole world.
The matter being discussed was the appearance of a strange hourglass in the courtyard of the Ministry of Magic. Fluder had been away on an assignment, and when he returned he had been tasked with attempting to decipher its secrets.
"There is unfortunately very little I have managed to learn," Fluder said. "The hourglass seems to be made of very powerful magic given we cannot destroy it. On appraising it, all we get is a timer."
"So it's a clock then?" the man he was talked to answered. This man was Jircniv Rune Farlord El Nix, the ruler of the Empire of Baharuth. Given the amount of nobles he had purged, as well as members of his own family, he was often called the Blood-Emperor.
"Indeed, it would seem so," Fluder said. "The only issue is that it is not counting in a cycle, but rather, it is counting down to something. It appears there is a month's time left."
"And what happens when the clock strikes zero?" the Blood-Emperor asked.
"I cannot tell," Fluder said. "However, the issue arises as to what we are to do regarding it. I would evacuate the building completely, but that still leaves the matter of the monster hidden deep within..."
"Ah," Jircniv said. "That one?"
"Indeed," Fluder said.
The Katze Plains were an area located between the Re-Estize Kingdom and the Baharuth Empire. They land was cursed and continuously spawned undead- and five years ago an extraordinarily powerful undead creature had emerged from the area. It was their good fortune that it could not fly, allowing Fluder and his disciples to kite the creature from afar and capture it.
It was currently chained up within the depths of the Ministry, but the fear was that if a calamity were to take place in the area, the creature may somehow get free.
"Can we not simply move it?" one of Jircniv's retainers asked.
"That carries far too much risk," Fluder said. "One mistake could lead to the deaths of thousands."
"In that case, we should let it be until we can get more information on it," Jircniv said. "Is it not possible that nothing happens when the timer hits zero? Perhaps it is simply a timepiece that rotates with a month beings its period of oscillation."
"Highly doubtful, Your Highness, given its nature," Fluder said. "I have also investigated a similar object appearing in the Re-Estize Kingdom, and it heralded the arrival of a horde of monsters."
"Right, right," Jircniv said. "That incident involving the Sunlight Scripture, Gazef, and that warrior Suzuki Satoru?"
"Suzuki Satoru?" Nimble, one of the Four Knights asked. "Isn't he the newest Adamantite-ranked adventurer of the Kingdom?"
"Indeed he is," Jircniv said. "He got to that rank in a matter of two weeks, and it appears that he and his companions could easily take on the entire Sunlight Scripture."
"Right you are," Fluder said. "And what concerns me most is the arrival of monsters from what the villagers described as cracks in the sky. It is oddly similar to the stories of how the Evil Deities arrived."
These words caught everyone's attention.
Two hundred years ago, various monsters appeared from out of nowhere and began wreaking havoc on the nearby countries. Many nations fell in the resulting wars, and from the rubble several new ones emerged. Both the Kingdom and the Empire were prime examples of this- before the incident two hundred years ago they had been one single country as a matter of fact before splitting in two. The city of E-Rantel, which had originally belonged to the Slane Theocracy, was abandoned by them during the fighting and claimed by the Re-Estize Kingdom.
"What then do we need to do?" Jircniv asked. The Evil Deities had been defeated by a group known as the Thirteen Heroes. While Fluder was not among them, he had lived during that time and rivalled them in strength.
"We should gather supplies, first of all," Fluder said. "If possible, it would be a good idea to borrow influence from the Theocracy- one of the few nations to have survived the disaster two hundred years ago. We should ask this adventurer regarding what he saw- it may become necessary to form an alliance with the Kingdom if things get dire." Fluder didn't say it, but he also felt that he might have to reconcile with that female magic caster of the Kingdom.
"Ah," Jircniv said with a sigh. "In that case it might be counterproductive to go ahead and declare war on them this time. Perhaps I should leave them alone for now?" In a situation where hordes of monsters appeared, it would be better if Re-Estize's military strength was left intact.
"Regarding Suzuki Satoru, I have gleaned some information," Fluder said. "It is said that he is a warrior who fights using only a shield."
"Someone you know, Nazami?" Nimble asked, half-jesting.
Nazami stepped forward. "No, I have not heard that name before. But is it not odd to say that he fights with a single shield? I myself use two when performing my special technique and otherwise switch weapons if needed- are you sure you did not mishear something? Would it not make more sense for him to fight with a sword or spear in the other hand?"
"The talk is rathe clear- he only used a single shield," Fluder said. "However, he was still able to deal damage somehow."
"It is possible," Nazami said. "Using Martial Arts like [Shield Bash] one can turn a shield into a damaging weapon, though it is not as effective as using a sword or other offensive weapon. I have to say that I am quite perplexed hearing about anyone who would fight with just a shield. With that said, if he is really strong, I would rather like to test myself against him."
"Indeed," Jircniv said. "Why leave one hand unoccupied in combat? Regardless, do you think there is a way that we can draw him into our fold? If things go south, we could certainly use another Adamantite team in our ranks."
"I will look into it, Your Highness," Fluder said.
"What is this place?" Suzuki said. He was not in the Sixth Floor of Nazarick- that was for certain.
Cerberus Shield Unlocked!
Inter-Dimensional Locust Shield Unlocked!
Inter-Dimensional Lower Bee Shield Unlocked!
Inter-Dimensional Zombie Shield Unlocked!
Bee Needle Shield Unlocked!
He was in a strange room with an odd sigil on the floor, and he wasn't alone. There were people in robes gathered in front of them, and next to him Suzuki saw a tall blonde man holding a spear, a black haired man with a sword, and a shorter blonde one with a bow.
The three others were dressed in clothing one would find in modern Japan, with one of them even wearing a school uniform. Suzuki, who was wearing clothes from Nazarick, easily stood out amongst them.
"O heroes!" one of the men in front of them said. "Please save our kingdom!"
A/N: Thanks for reading guys!
