Chapter 17: The Shadow of Sabertooth Returns! Rain & Shocking Info Arrives! The Lust & Evil of Yamabuki Town's Cult!
Lucy and Risa attentively listened to Sting, who stood in front of the request board while the girls sat down at the nearest table, and the protagonists were currently discussing possible strategies that could be used to help them retrieve Yukino. Even though Lucy and Risa desired to take down the evil priestess who was keeping Yukino in Yamabuki Town, Sting felt like it would be a very wise decision to save the Celestial Spirit Wizard before focusing on anything else that would be occurring in the town of Yamabuki. After all, Yukino was a comrade from Sabertooth.
That gave Lucy and Risa a personal stake in this situation, since they were responsible for Yukino's life now, and neither one of them wanted their kind friend to die. Risa looked curious as she wondered about how they would be able to safely rescue Yukino, as a powerful priestess probably wouldn't be very happy to see mages taking away someone who she was holding captive, and Risa hoped that nothing bad would happen. After all, this matter wasn't as simple as just taking a job to defeat a priestess and receive money for a sale.
She calmly looked at Lucy, who looked quite determined to save Yukino, and Risa hoped that they could go back later to defeat the priestess. That seemed like a reasonable strategy, but Risa began to have a thought in her mind about Rogue seemed to have gotten attacked before his communication with Sting was abruptly cut off. The way that Rogue had swiftly been attacked when he and Frosch thought they was safe made Risa start to think that there was a strong possibility that the priestess could ambush the group, so plenty of careful thinking was needed.
Sting watched Lucy look down at the table while she seemed to be thinking of a good idea for rescuing Yukino, and Lucy silently wondered if they could just storm into the town. That would definitely startle the priestess, as well as surprising any of her followers who wouldn't expect to hear the loud sound of people using explosive magic in their town like a group of wild mages, and the light from some blasts could prove to be a good cover for the person who would quickly rescue Yukino in the quietest way possible. By creating several blasts of light that were able to blind enemies, as well as make them hear all the noise, that would keep their attention off of whoever was rescuing Yukino.
"Sting, it would probably be a good idea to use some powerful attacks as distractions while one of us rescues Yukino. That way, the enemies would be blinded by the light long enough for us to get our friend back." Lucy told him with a confident smile on her face, seeing no issues with that plan.
That prompted the white dragon slayer to reply with a small frown on his face, as he folded his arms, "That strategy is good, Lucy, but we're still at a disadvantage. We've never met this priestess before or seen her abilities firsthand, so it's impossible to just assume that her town isn't heavily armed. Furthermore, she seemingly chased Rogue to a street. Unfortunately, that gives me a reason to believe she's expecting us."
"We'd be walking right into a trap, then. She'd probably make us think it's easy to get Yukino, too." Lucy responded with a frown starting to appear on her face, as she could see the situation from Sting's point of view.
Lucy's words only made Risa narrow her cherry red eyes, as she really didn't like how the priestess would set the group up for an easy trap from simply thinking that they were weak idiots, and the pink-haired girl really wanted to rescue Yukino while finding the smartest way to surprise the enemies for a long amount of time. If the group didn't distract the priestess with a decoy or distract her in a more clever way that could give the other team members some time to escape with Yukino, then that would just make the protagonists be running for their lives.
Risa felt that the priestess would eventually track them down to easily kill them, no matter how far they went or how fast they ran from Yamabuki Town. Therefore, they would have to save Yukino and take down the priestess. Risa realized the serious of this twofold mission, but she started to smile confidently from how this seemed like the group's only option for rescuing Yukino and completing another important job. The situation would be tough, but fighting hard to save their friend seemed like the only choice available right now.
She continued to look at Sting, who sighed while he probably shared that same thought, and Risa turned to smile at Lucy while feeling like the only plan that they could have would involve charging through any enemies in Yamabuki Town to save their friend. Even if they had to push enemies aside or use an explosion to propel someone towards the priestess for them to fight her at close-range, the important thing was that this team of mages would be finding a way that worked for them. Risa softly smiled at her own idea, but hearing Sabertooth's front doors suddenly creak open made Risa quickly turn around. She quickly looked just as concerned as Lucy and Sting from seeing Rogue slowly walk into the Sabertooth with Frosch on his shoulder, the shadow dragon slayer being heavily bruised and bloodied while his green Exceed was also wounded very badly, and Risa ran over to them.
"Rogue! Frosch! What did that lady do to you?!" Risa exclaimed while looking concerned, before asking her question in an alarmed manner.
Frosch weakly replied with tears in his eyes, being badly bruised as his frog costume was somewhat torn, "That woman in the white dress... Risa... Her lightning was so scary... Rogue's hurt very badly... Yukino is still in the church... Fro was so frightened!"
Rogue weakly added while falling to the ground, nearly losing consciousness as he could see Sting behind Risa, "Sting, you have to get Yukino out of that church... Please get her away from that crazed woman... The lightning from that priestess... is on a really horrifying level. That one lightning spell... I saw what it did to Yukino... Beware of her... She's... under Kanata's influence..."
That was all Rogue could say before he passed out, prompting Risa to shoot out a thin pink beam of energy from her mouth, and she aimed that beam at the bloody wounds on Rogue's back. As the pink aura engulfed some of his bruises, Risa did her best to make her legs cease with trembling. She had a horrified look in her eyes from hearing that Yukino was under the influence of Kanata, who was presumably the priestess, and lightning making Yukino be controlled by a priestess was something that Risa perceived to be very dark.
Rogue had basically told everyone that Yukino was now possessed, almost like a mere puppet who would blindly follow the orders of a religious zealot, and Risa fell to her knees for a moment. This was the first time that she had ever heard of a lightning attack that brainwashed other people, which made her believe that the priestess fried Yukino's brain with electricity, and Risa hoped that Yukino wasn't dead. Judging by how Rogue talked about the priestess having powerful lightning, Risa tried focusing on Rogue's body as she didn't want to imagine Yukino's screams of agonizing pain in her mind.
Risa quickly flipped Rogue over on to his back, seeing several bleeding wounds and bruises on his abdomen, and she fired more pink beams from her mouth. They healed those bruises while Risa used more power than necessary to make the aura engulf Rogue's body, and Risa even hit Frosch with one of her healing beams. The two Sabertooth members were going to be okay while they would soon feel fully healed, but Risa was very unsettled from what she had heard. Sting's face showed a mix of frustration and concern from seeing Rogue be on the ground, especially from hearing that they had to beware of Yukino, and he looked just as shaken as Lucy and Risa from how the situation seemed worse than they initially thought.
50 minutes later...
After Rogue and Frosch regained enough of their strength to stand up, Risa brought them over to the table where she had been sitting with Lucy. Lucy watched Sting sit across from her while Rogue sat down next to him with Frosch choosing to stay on his shoulder, and her eyes shifted to Rogue. Despite how Risa healed his physical injuries, she didn't heal the trauma that Rogue experienced from seeing what Kanata had done to Yukino. As he thought about how the hazel-eyed woman was still in Yamabuki Town, Rogue clenched one of his fists. He slammed it down on the table, narrowing his red eyes in sheer frustration.
The black-haired male felt upset that he obeyed Yukino's order to run away with Frosch, since he believed that the situation could've ended differently if he had just stayed by her side to at least kill the cult members who harmed him and Frosch with their lightning, and Rogue's body lightly shook as he recalled turning around in the doorway of the church's entrance to see Yukino aggressively have her arms be restrained by a group of female mages who wore white robes. Rogue had unleashed his Shadow Dragon's Roar to hopefully get them away from her, but he was startled from seeing the possessed male members intercept his attack like they were willing to die.
As those individuals had fallen to either hit the ground or harshly hit the brown benches, Yukino had yelled at Rogue to run. He was already moderately injured from dealing with Lightning Magic from Kanata and her other zealots while he needed to protect Frosch and Yukino, so it wasn't surprising that the kind Celestial Spirit Wizard didn't want her friend to get harmed anymore. Rogue recalled how Yukino sternly told him to not let himself or Frosch die in the church, and he had simply closed his eyes while running away from the church. He felt guilty about leaving Yukino behind, especially because of what had happened afterwards.
Rogue had gone back to just peek into the church, and the female followers of the priestess moved to the sides to make a path for her to reach Yukino. Yukino had still been restrained by two brown-haired women who had lemon yellow eyes that showed no emotion while they disturbingly smiled in a joyous manner from seeing Kanata approach her, and Rogue unfortunately watched Kanata strike Yukino with a tremendous burst of lightning. She had let out a scream of agonizing pain from the high amount of lightning that damaged her body, and the black clouds of smoke quickly cleared up to reveal that Yukino's skin was somewhat charred from the lightning while she was badly bruised from that attack. Kanata's previous spells of Lightning Magic had been deadly, but this particular spell knocked Yukino unconscious. Kanata had placed her right hand on Yukino's forehead as she sent a yellow aura of Lightning Magic into Yukino's body, and Rogue's body shook frantically as he felt absolute horror from seeing Yukino slowly open her eyes that were now in a shade of lemon yellow as they seemed lifeless. He briefly glanced down at a girl hiding behind a bench, but slightly moving the door had alerted the priestess to his presence while Yukino ominously and disturbingly hummed a series of low music notes that seemed to be in a hymn with the other female followers who joined her in glancing at the door. Rogue recalled how the priestess crazily ran towards him at high speeds, which made him quickly try running out of Yamabuki Town with Frosch, and getting to a street near a route paved in asphalt had made Rogue feel safe enough to even ignore the lifeless bodies of the dead border guards who appeared to have been drained of their magic.
"If you don't mind reliving it, Rogue, what happened when that woman came after you and Frosch? Was she alone?" Sting asked Rogue in a serious tone while frowning, prompting Rogue to shift his attention away from his thoughts.
Rogue calmly replied while his hands trembled with some fear, as he wouldn't forget the pain from that lightning, "She attempted to kill Frosch and I with six of her spells, but she didn't use the spell that possessed Yukino. Unlike with Yukino, Kanata had no need for me or Frosch. I saw her cult members slowly walk out of the church while they hummed a creepy hymn that seemed to be in harmony with her chanting as she charged up a high amount of lightning around her body, and I used all my energy to go down into her shadow. That helped me hide with Frosch, so we waited for the priestess and her evil cult to leave."
Lucy commented with a somewhat scared look on her face, imagining the scene, "Wow, a dark town with a priestess harming you with her lightning and chanting a spell as her followers disturbingly sing or hum hymns in harmony with her actions... I don't even want to imagine what Yukino's going through right now."
Lucy wondered if they would have to fight Yukino, since she was now possessed, and the green-haired girl looked worried from how she would really have to summon up the willpower to not think of that possessed husk as Yukino. She slowly closed her eyes as the image of Yukino as a mere husk with no will of her own came to mind, but that image was swiftly overtaken by thoughts of how Yukino was Lucy's friend. They had worked together to close the Eclipse Gate that had allowed seven powerful dragons to rampage through Crocus last year, and Lucy even convinced Yukino three days before that event to keep the gold keys of her Celestial Spirits instead of giving them away.
Yukino wasn't just a fellow mage who had been kidnapped, but she was a very nice person who loved being in Sabertooth. This guild was a place that she could view as a loving home, since Sting would also love to keep having Yukino as a member of Sabertooth, and it would be unwise for Lucy or Sting to kill or let any other Sabertooth wizard kill one of the guild's own members. Lucy personally felt like she wouldn't be able to deal with the harsh act of killing Yukino, and the only way to break someone free from a mind-control spell was to kill the person who was controlling them.
As Lucy wondered about her team's chances of succeeding against a dangerous priestess, the protagonists all became startled from the sudden and loud sound of thunder roaring over the town of Kogane. The thunder was quickly followed by the sound of rain pouring down from the sky, sounding like it was drizzling lightly, and the sound of the rain falling soon became heavier to where it nearly occurred someone's footsteps running up to the guild's entrance doors. They softly knocked on the door five times, which made Frosch widen his eyes in fear from thinking that the priestess followed him and Rogue here to finally kill them, but Risa got up from her chair. She let out a soft sigh to calm herself down, before narrowing her eyes, and she built up magical power while gastily walking to Sabertooth's front doors. If an enemy was here now, then Risa would gladly fight them in the rain. Upon hearing two more soft knocks, Risa slowly pushed open the doors and frowned sternly. Her expression soon changed to a curious one from seeing a young girl in a white hat protectively having one hand on a bag, and Risa watched the girl's legs shake with exhaustion as they made eye contact.
"Help me, please... I really need... someone's help. Don't let the cultists... find me." The girl weakly told Risa with an exhausted facial expression while panting, not minding how she was getting soaked in the rain.
That prompted Risa to simply reply with a concerned facial expression, as she proceeded to pull the girl into Sabertooth and hastily get her behind one of the doors, "If you're running away from a cult and trying to hide, then you need to keep yourself from just being out in plain sight."
"Whoa, we've got another surprise involving a cult?" Sting asked with a curious look on his face while getting up from the table, having heard the girl's pleas for help.
Rogue said aloud while looking shocked from noticing who Risa was talking to, "You're that girl who was trying to be behind the church bench!"
Lucy widened her eyes in a surprised manner at Rogue, before turning her head to see the female in the white hat look just as stunned to see that Rogue was here, and Lucy viewed this new situation as an interesting one. She watched the girl start to stare at her, before seeing her firmly place one hand over the zipper of the bag that she was carrying, and Lucy simply gave her a disappointed frown from how she didn't seem to be the most trusting individual in Fiore. Even if this girl recognized the face of Kotomi Takeuchi, Lucy would gladly display how she wasn't a Sabertooth mage doubling as a dirty thief.
In fact, she hastily got up from the table to shut the guild's front doors. She firmly pushed on them after they were closed to just make sure that the doors weren't even slightly open, and Lucy wasn't going to let any cult members invade the Sabertooth guild. Still, she and Sting both felt very curious about the identity of the girl who was carrying a yellow bag that dripped with rainwater falling from it. Lucy and Sting both looked at each other while having small expressions of worry start to be on their faces, and Lucy turned to Rogue to see him look more concerned than curious.
He stared at the girl while not viewing her as a religious enemy or a dark mage from Yamabuki Town, and the fact that Rogue claimed she was hiding behind a bench made Lucy think that the girl was one of the people who also wanted to survive against the horrible cult. Risa calmly led the girl over to the round table, before getting a nearby chair from an empty table, and the girl simply sat down without saying a word. She looked down at the table while her facial expression displayed sadness, but she chose to not say much about her situation to the mages right now.
One hour later...
Since the girl who came to their guild was refusing to say many words while only thanking Risa for getting her a hot a cup of sugary tea with a slice of pumpkin spice cake from the bar, everyone else mostly stayed silent. Lucy simply kept her eyes focused on that yellow bag as she sat across from the quiet girl, and she wondered if this girl was ever going to speak about the trouble that she was currently going through. Lucy watched the girl simply start to eat her cake, and she used the spoon that was near the plate to put a big piece of the orange cake into her mouth.
Lucy looked just as concerned as Sting and Risa from seeing the girl's saddened facial expression, and she clearly had some things on her mind. The fact that the girl chose to just lightly sip her tea right now didn't really make Risa be pleased, as every passing minute could be a crucial bit of time that they were losing in their quest to save Yukino, and the pink-haired girl looked impatient as she wondered if there was a way for the girl to talk more about those cultists. That made Risa's eyes suddenly widen with a bit of realization, as the yellow flyer was connected to Rogue's dilemma where he and Yukino had been attacked by cultists before they tried to take down the priestess in the church, and those people must've also brutally attacked this suffering stranger. She may not have wanted to talk about the terrible things that she endured to people who wouldn't immediately understand the situation, but the fact that Yukino's life was in danger because of Yamaki Town's cult gave Risa a little idea. She made one of her fingers tap Lucy's hand, before looking down at her Capri pants, and Risa pretended to pull something out of her pockets. Upon seeing Risa direct that small signal at her, Lucy smiled a bit while thinking that information from a certain task would surprise this client enough to where she wouldn't be so silent.
She pulled out the yellow flyer that was neatly folded in the left pocket of her plaid skirt, and Lucy unfolded it. She simply placed it in front of the girl who was taking more sips of her tea, and she watched the girl swallow her drink. Lucy saw her attention shift to the flyer, her pastel yellow eyes widening in sheer disbelief, and the stranger nearly choked on her tea. She let out two soft coughs while Lucy pulled the flyer away from her, and Sting simply smiled at Lucy's little way of making the girl feel like talking. Someone who also had to deal with a cult seemed like a weird coincidence, but that kind of reaction from simply seeing the job pertaining to Yamabuki Town meant that this girl wasn't exactly unfamiliar with that place.
Risa gently patted the girl's back to keep her from choking on that tea, and she watched the girl let out a heavy sigh. It seemed like she could no longer hide the information that she had keeping to herself, since this matter was no longer just her problem, and thinking back on everything that happened over a period of time that seemed like years only made this girl put down the cup of tea to tightly clench her fists. Small tears welled up in her eyes while she began to think about everything that she had seen, including some spells of lightning that gave her painful memories, and she could no longer suppress those feelings.
"I'm... Kirie Luster. I'm a mage who lives in Yamabuki Town, and I fled from the cult early this morning. I... I can't take it anymore! The priestess and her cult have done horrible things such as the cult's sadistic child hunts during their nightly patrols, harming wizards who come from other towns, and there are even ceremonies where mages have to kill each other when they're dispensable! It's all just too much for me to handle. The priestess is crazed, and the hymns of her followers are just as awful..." Kirie explained to the group with tears starting to go down her face in streams, her body trembling as she cried from recalling more horrible memories.
Lucy replied to her with a shocked look in her eyes, not expecting to hear the extent of the priestess' evil go quite far, "Whoa... She's doing several evil and insane things!"
"I... I even had to see her use that dangerous lightning this morning to possess a girl, and the priestess made that girl be naked as she was ordered to be on her hands and knees in front of the altar! Even worse, she hit her with lightning again as a threat before nicely telling her the church's rule about how Lightning Magic must viciously be used to make others either be dead or powerless for the cult to express their hatred. That's just like what she had done to me, before... before..." Kirie explained further, closing her eyes in a pained manner as her mind flashed back to a horrible experience.
Kirie couldn't bring herself to fully say that last sentence, as the memory of hearing the priestess talk about no one being able to defy her power or have her beauty in a disturbingly soothing voice that was coupled alongside how she was smirking with a mix of evil and lust on her face during the time where Kirie broke free from Kanata's influence was something that made Kirie start to cry more. Her body trembled while she didn't want to remember that particular night any further, not wanting to remember how that priestess let her white dress fall to floor in a slow manner before Kirie saw the shadows from a nearby candle darken most of the priestess' face to where the only other source of light in that room was her lemon yellow eyes.
Kirie opened her eyes for a moment while Risa and Rogue gave her very concerned looks, viewing them to be more worried about the lightning abilities of the priestess instead of being worried about her experience from this morning, and Kirie simply looked more saddened at how she possibly made these mages be unsettled to where they wouldn't even think of helping her out. In fact, she glanced back at Lucy and waited for her to just tear the yellow flyer into pieces. That would keep the group from having to go to Yamabuki Town, and no one else would lose their lives.
Much to her surprise, however, Lucy quickly stood up while narrowing her orange eyes. She passed the flyer to Sting, who quickly went to the guild master's office for Lector to stamp it, and Lucy began to clench her fists tightly. She looked at Risa, who could see the unyielding determination in Lucy's eyes, and hearing about what the priestess did to Yukino only made Lucy feel more ambition in her heart. She watched Risa and Rogue also get up from the table, giving them a stern look that informed them about how she was ready to take down that priestess, and Lucy even cracked her knuckles loudly like she planned on punching that priestess in the face.
"Kirie, we'll defeat the priestess and we'll bring Yukino back home to Sabertooth! It's true that the rescue might be too much for us to handle, but saving our friend is more important than thinking about what could go wrong!" Lucy fiercely told her, as she began to walk away from the table.
That prompted Kirie to respond with a fearful facial expression, as Lucy didn't look like the toughest individual in Sabertooth, "You could get hit with an electric blast to where you'd be dead, or the priestess could paralyze your body with her lightning! Even though I managed to send that flyer to your group, don't go to a place where you'll certainly get defeated!"
Lucy turned around to reply to her with a look of immense determination on her face, "If we just think about how a priestess has made her lightning be terrifying, then letting her intimidate us into thinking out of fear is stupid. That's why we have to think for ourselves, and we'll defeat her with all our of our strength! If this religious priestess wants to mess with Sabertooth and harm our friend with her supposedly godly lightning, then we'll show her that the strength of our willpower is much greater!"
"Even against all odds, this mage believes in herself. She believes... in her own inner strength." Kirie thought to herself, as she softly gasped from hearing Lucy's words.
Risa turned around to give Kirie a confident smile, as she also wasn't worried about dealing with that Lightning Magic, and she walked next to Lucy while her eyes didn't show any fear. Even if the enemy was stronger, Risa and her friends couldn't afford to lose this next fight. They were going to take down the priestess, as well as give the cultists a harsh beating for what they had done to Rogue, and Frosch got off of Rogue's shoulder to simply give Kirie a thumbs-up while smiling in a happy manner. Kirie got to see Sting run out of the office to get back to the group, and they all smiled confidently.
Despite how Rogue had gotten beaten up earlier by the priestess and her cult, he wasn't about to just let those zealots think that his battle against them was officially over. In fact, having a team of friends by his side definitely made this mission seem like it would go very smoothly. He stood on the far right side of the group while Sting stood on the opposite end with the girls in the middle, and the team was going to make sure that Yukino came home safely. Sting and Lucy confidently smiled at each other, before the group walked into the heavy downpour of rain that came down from the grey skies that roared with thunder, and even the thunder or lightning wouldn't discourage them.
They were going to complete this mission, but not just to kill the priestess or get Yukino back home. Sting had determination in his blue eyes from viewing the priestess' actions of kidnapping Yukino as a way of messing with Sabertooth, and he wasn't going to let someone get away with trying to think that Sabertooth was a guild that could be underestimated. He would gladly display the holy light from his White Dragon Slayer Magic, and Sting was glad to have Lucy by his side. She seemed so determined to help him and Risa handle both parts of this job, and Lucy had truly gotten tougher. Her strength even inspired Kirie to run after the group, and seeing how Lucy had so much determination made her also feel like a fifth mage needed to help the group rescue their friend.

Yukino laid in bed with a calm facial expression, her lemon yellow eyes being emotionless as they showed no pupils, and she merely looked over at a dark brown desk that was near one of the brown wooden walls of her room in the church. The desk had a white candle on it that had been lit by a yellow flame that was surprisingly created from Kanata spitting out a small beam of lightning for it to make a tiny explosion after striking the fuse on the candlestick, and the shadows of other furniture items could be seen staying stagnant on the walls as the flame's shadow slightly swayed back and forth.
The flame's long shadow created a good amount of darkness on the walls while it also made a shadow majorly be over Yukino's face to where her skin was somewhat darkened, and Yukino's yellow eyes were now her brightest aspect. She merely let out a gentle sigh while obeying Kanata's order about how she needed to get some rest before helping some of her followers with the child hunts, and harming those children in an effort to unleash her resentment would be good practice with her Lightning Magic before the eventual day where she would express her vengeance towards Kagura Mikazuchi.
Even the slightest thought of killing Kagura made Yukino start to tightly grab the white bed sheet that covered her soft mattress, and she clenched her fists tightly as she growled in a resentful manner. Yukino's mind and heart were filled with resentment for Kagura, as the humiliation of being kicked out of Sabertooth last year by the former guild master named Jiemma and being forced to strip naked had been circumstances that resulted from how Kagura made Yukino look very weak during their fight on the second day of the Grand Magic Games, and the fact that Kagura viewed Yukino to be so weak to where she had to be pitied only made Yukino make her teeth be as clenched as her tightened fists.
She angrily slammed her left fist against the wall, creating a small crack in it, and Yukino started to glare at the damaged wall. She imagined herself electrocuting Kagura to death, hitting her with spells of Lightning Magic repeatedly until Kagura begged for mercy, and the idea of Kagura begging to be spared only caused Yukino's lips to form a pleased smirk from imagining herself picking up Kagura's unsheathed sword to viciously slice into her body several times. As Yukino turned her head away from the wall to look at the candle's flame that seemed as heated as her resentment towards Kagura, the bedroom door slowly opened for Yukino to see her darkened room become somewhat brightened by a calming presence walking in.
"Hello, my dear follower. I was hoping to possibly enhance your strength with my Lightning Magic as you slept, my child. However, it seems like you're busy with resentment festering inside of you right now. Please just keep building up all of that wonderful hatred within yourself, until the day where those hateful emotions shall strengthen your magic to where your enemies shall die at your hands."
