Borrowed Empathy : Chapter 4.

Author's Notes :

Sooooo, this story was supposed to be short and fluffy ^^. AND I am failing on both counts :( This is chapter 4, sooooo it's definitely not short anymore, and I haven't gotten around to any fluff **cries** BUT! At least I am writing a solid romance with maybe a little comedy? Not the angst/gore/torture that I usually write hehe, so that's an improvement! I guess… ;) R&R please help!

They didn't have long to wait. Five minutes later, and all hell broke loose.

At first, it began with afew startled squeaks and squeals of people running past him.

Then, Hisoka began to feel a general sense of slight panic coming from the nearest room, and noticed his co-workers suddenly scatter and leave the room as fast as they could.

He narrowed his eyes. What was going on?

More people came running past, looking confused and frightened.

"EEEEEP!" a terrified squeak came from the direction of the offices.

Hisoka ran down the hallway and burst through the door to see a frightened puppy sitting on top of his desk.

It was Tsuzuki in his dog-form, crouched on the desk, his purple eyes wide enough to pop out of his face.

"Uhh… TATSUMI, what are you doing?" he whimpered nervously.

"Tsuzuki! You baka! Get off my desk!" Hisoka snapped.

But seeing that everyone else was scurrying out of the room and Tsuzuki was hiding on a table, he was more suspicious than angry.

He glanced down to see that the floor all around the desk was completely lost under waves and waves of thick, black shadows.

Tsuzuki literally flew through the air and wrapped his arms and legs around his partner's torso like he was clinging to a tree.

"Soka!" cried the brunette happily.

"BAKA! Get off me!" the smaller boy yelped.

Tsuzuki was too heavy for the much smaller teenager to support. With his arms pinned against his slender body, Hisoka had no chance of either getting Tsuzuki off of him or of stopping his fall.

He overbalanced and they both crashed to the floor in a pile of arms and legs.

"What did you do that for?! Baka, baka, baka!" Hisoka shouted at him, hitting him over the head repeatedly with a book.

He only stopped when he realized that he could sense everyone else in the department… and they were all running around in confusion and mild fear.

The teenager squeezed his eyes closed in concentration. He could see people in other departments, too. They were running from the room as the shadows began to move down the walls and fill the space with darkness.

Hisoka was jerked back to reality (literally) when Tsuzuki grabbed his arm and tugged him into a protective embrace. The older shinigami immediately scrambled back away from the sea of inky blackness that was moving towards them, carrying the boy with him.

Both shinigami scrambled to their feet and headed for the door.

No sooner had the door shut behind them when they heard the impact of solid shadows slamming into the door behind them.

Tsuzuki was scarily calm. Purple eyes met green.

"Something's wrong with Tatsumi," he said seriously.

"First clue?" responded Hisoka dryly.

Black shapes roiled on the floor and on the ceiling. Shadows like snakes crawled down the walls. Darkness seemed to ooze from every crack of the building and filled the hallways like rising water.

And they were all moving in the same direction… hundreds of shadows, all flowing and slithering and gliding towards Tatsumi's office… obeying their master's call.

"I've got to help him," Tsuzuki decided instantly.

Although he could be childish at times, Tsuzuki was quite possibly the most fiercely protective Guardian in Meifu. And right now, he had that fire in his eyes that Hisoka always saw when he was going into a fight… that same determination that he always had whenever he was protecting someone important to him.

"Tsuzuki, wait!" Hisoka gasped, grabbing his coat as the taller man started to run.

"Come on, Hisoka!" the purple-eyed man said. "Tatsumi's in trouble. I can't just walk away!" he exclaimed passionately.

He was always so emotional…

Waves of determination, protectiveness, worry… and yes, there it was… love… were radiating from the defensive shinigami.

"Tsuzuki, just wait a second. Listen to me. This is happening all over the Ministry!" Hisoka almost shouted at him.

"What? The entire Ministry? But it's huge!" Tsuzuki whirled around to fix his partner with that serious, determined, focused expression that he had so often in the field.

Hisoka nodded, taking charge.

"Right now, Tatsumi has control of every shadow in the building, and he's sick. YOU have to help get everyone out of the building. I'll get Watari, okay? We'll take care of Tatsumi."

And without waiting for his partner to argue, Hisoka shoved him towards the exit and teleported to Watari's lab.
