Kagome's P.o.v.
She fidgeted nervously as she sat there in the heavy silence of the Headmaster's Office. She was under the scrutiny of two sets of eyes, while the office's other three occupants seemed to be looking elsewhere. This was not how Kagome wanted others to find out who her Guardian was. Then again, as soon as the letter arrived, she knew she was literally fucked. His name was barely even whispered among the senate members of the Humans and Vampires. That he was a man that was more legendary and reclusive than the True Heir of the Vampires, who she knew as currently at Aido's family mansion right now. And had been for the better part of the two-week Holiday.
"Well, this is not what I was expecting," Kaien Cross, HeadMaster of the Cross Academy, said, his voice soft and serious which was at odds with the cheerful smile on his lips. "But I am honored that you are here in person, Lord Inui. Though I am curious as to why? I mean for obvious reasons, of course."
Kagome kept her eyes forward, refusing to look at Sesshomaru. His letter had stated that he'd be visiting her over the Holiday. Not why. But she was sure it had to do with the information she had gotten before the letter had arrived. The irritating jackass and Rido Kuran had made movement. They had met and seemed to talk, though there had been no way to get close to figuring out what was discussed. And now, the students of Cross Academy, both Day and Night, were returning tomorrow.
"Hnhh."
It was just a sound but spoke volumes as it was given to answer the questions asked. Internally Kagome was picturing her kicking Sesshomaru in his ass. This wasn't helping, and when she had been planted at the school, a promise to Kaien had been given that no harm would come to the students. Both Sesshomaru and herself were pleased with what Kaien was trying to do. It was like a dream for her, personally, and because it made her happy, Sesshomaru supported it. Then again, there were other factors at play that happened a little over twelve years ago. But that wasn't something that could be shared, and measures had been taken to keep that knowledge buried deep in certain people's memories, to protect them?
"Lord Inui, you gave me a promise when I allowed Kagome Higurashi to enter my school," Kaien said, his voice becoming very cold and hard. It had Kagome stiffening and flushing. He had been a friend of Sesshomaru's and her's for over a hundred and fifty years.
"I told you that I needed her here for the reason of education. Though we both know that was a baseless reason considering her age is almost comparable to my own," Sesshomaru finally said, his voice so monotone that she was sure that the color white would be pissed. "But the reality is this; we have been monitoring the movement of the factions between the Vampires. You what I mean by this. And one of the opposing Factions Leaders has made contact with a person of interest to us."
Kagome sucked her bottom lip in and hung her head as she felt two more sets of eyes land on her. She didn't have to look up to know that Zero and Yuuki were looking at her. Though she was sure, it was the age comment, something she'd have to explain later?
"That person has surfaced? And is willingly helping them? What is the gain from this course of action? And I could tell after it was done since the land that this Academy is built on is tuned to me and my bloodline that ancient magic was performed," Kaien said, after leaning back and sighing. "So, tell me exactly what that was about? I deserve to know what has been going on at my Academy, Sesshomaru. Or am I just a pawn for you to use and discard like so many others?"
Unable to suppress the twitch, Kagome just let it jerk her body at the words that had been spat out. It was a low insult, but one meant to probe and to put a line in the proverbial sand. She adored Kaien, even if he had crossed a line with her with the Vampire Association fiasco.
"Do not be obtuse, Cross," Sesshomaru snapped, his Youki leaking out in a slightly oppressive manner, making Kagome start picturing kicking his ass again. "You are my friend. Someone I value and wish to keep close. You are more than aware that there are very few I would ever entrust the care of Kagome too. I had Kagome form a blood contract with Kaname Kuran. Which has proved to be more than amusing and fruitful since this issue directly relates to him."
Letting a groan crawl up her throat, Kagome let her body slump in the chair, head falling back so she could look at the ceiling. Now there were five sets of eyes on her person. Shippo Kagome would deal with later since she hadn't told him the exact nature of the contract. Then there was the fact she knew Sesshomaru would want to stake a claim on Yuuki since she was this era's reincarnation of Rin. He didn't care if she was the blood sister (though sealed) of Kaname Kuran. Or that she was the hidden bride to Kaname either. Yeah, that was a cluster fuck that was bound to explode.
Kaname P.o.v.
He was not amused. In fact, he was rather angry at the moment as he stared into the cold, haughty eyes of one Lord Sesshomaru Inui. The information he had just been given about Yuuki was very unpleasant, even if it did come with the benefit that she had more protection to be kept safe. But Kaname wasn't a fool; he recalled how after the battle five hundred years ago that the Western Lord of Japan had about lost his mind when his ward had not woken up. Her small, weak human body had been unable to handle the power of Magatshui and passed away after the evil entity had left it. Resulting in the demon before him (who had far surpassed his father) hunting down each reincarnated version of that child, Rin.
Though he let his eyes shift from the Demon Lord to his ward Kagome, his frown deepened. Kagome had her barriers up and was looking dejected. There had been more information given about an event that happened over twelve years ago. And he wasn't ignorant about what it meant to the girl, more so since he didn't want her to suffer any more pain.
"We can work out the details of Yuuki later," He said, his tone telling Sesshomaru that he wouldn't budge on the subject. "Our main concern is now how to draw out the enemy hidden within our ranks."
He watched as Kagome seemed to curl further into herself with her thoughts. She had given a suggestion that had merits. But it was the fact that it left huge gaps for which things could be seriously wrong while making her be the bait. He had agreed immediately with both Sesshomaru and Kaien that it would not be feasible. Though the idea of holding a banquet party to help alleviate the light depression that always happened after the holidays would be a great idea.
"I think we should go with the party. It can be set up to bring unity to the Day and Night Classes. Help reduce the tedium of returning to school after the holidays and will allow us to observe things a bit more unfettered since we can mask those who will be on guard duty," Kaien spoke up, his voice dark and amused.
Kaname looked at the man with whom he had worked so hard to build the Academy. Silently he was glad that Kaien was backing this idea. Though even with guards who were masked on duty, they'd have to be hand-selected.
"I do not want to put Kagome into direct danger," Sesshomaru bit.
Kaname opened his mouth to speak when the sound of a chair scraping over the floor and rug drew his attention. Turning to look, he saw Kagome standing up and glaring, her face a deep crimson as her eyes flashed silver with her power.
"Sesshomaru, we have known each other for over five hundred years. I love and respect you completely, but get the stick outta that tailless ass of yours!" her voice was soft, yet it sounded like she had yelled. "For once, have faith in me and my capabilities. You have personally trained me all this time, and I am immortal to boot, so death isn't exactly an option. Besides, sometimes the more dangerous path is the safest. We are doing this, and you get no say if you are going to be a stiff, fuddy-duddy who cannot even cooperate with your own friends and compatriots!"
Kaname was stunned. He hadn't thought it possible to see the petite woman get mad. Taking a quick glance at Sesshomaru, he saw the tell-tale signs of him being angry as red bled into the gold of his iris'. Before anything could be said, Kaname's eyes were drawn back to Kagome, who marched past him and to the office door. He stiffened when the door was opened and then slammed behind the furious girl.
"She has a point."
His words were not meant to provoke the Demon Lord further but to hammer the meaning of her words home. Once he saw the red leave Sesshomaru's eyes, Kaname stood up and dismissed himself. He'd leave both Kaien and Sesshomaru alone to further talk and mull over things. Though he had faith that Kaien would get the results that were needed for this party to happen.
? P.o.v.
I was taken by surprise upon arriving back at the Academy. Kagome was standing next to the auburn-haired guy looking rather subdued, even sullen. But what had me feeling like I needed to be on guard was the tall silver-haired man standing behind her. The moment Kaname had gotten out of the car after Ruka and Aido, the silver-haired man had called, or rather demanded, that Kaname follow them to the Headmaster's office. It didn't sit right, and there was no mistaking that the man gave off an aura of power, dignity, and age?
Sighing as I sat on the couch watching Senri talk to a few of the others in the Dorm. It was another thing that had me on edge since Senri was usually quiet and withdrawn. The whole thing was surreal as if his personality had made a complete change over the holidays. The feel of a hand on my arm, squeezing it lightly, had me turning to look at Ruka. Who had been agitated since the silver-haired man had called Kaname away?
The whole thing seemed off, and from the way Takuma had reacted when Kaname had just waved a hand to dismiss him. Yeah, I knew that things were definitely stretched tight. The tension could snap if the wrong thing was said. Letting, what I hoped, was a reassuring smile pull my lips upward. Ruka was not in a good mood. It had become very obvious to all of us over the Holiday that something had happened and made Kaname distant, all on top of the contract he had with a human Priestess, Kagome Higurashi.
As the image of her flashed across my mind, the sound of the dormitory's main doors opened drew my attention. There stood Kaname, and his aura was swirling in agitation around his person. My instincts knew this was a true predator and were flaring up as I shifted my body to put Ruka behind me, even a little. Whatever had happened with that man, the HeadMaster and Kaname was not good.
"You all should retire for the night," Kaname stated. His tone was saying that he wouldn't tolerate anyone being disobedient. "As for that man, you all will give him the respect he is due, he is Kagome's Guardian, and even I don't dare to cross him openly."
I felt shocked at his words as I watched him walk through the living room and up the stairs. In the silence that settled after the door to his room shut with a loud click, I turned to look at Ruka. Her eyes were hooded and dark, indicating she was thinking unpleasant thoughts. And I knew which direction they were going in since I had seen this expression before after Kaname dealt affectionately with Yuuki.
"Ruka, let us retire; it would be for the best. And do not do something on impulse, or the punishment might be extreme."
Standing up as her eyes went wide and met my own. I couldn't say for certain why I didn't offer to help her up and walk her to her room like I normally did. But a part of me felt like I needed to put distance between her and myself, as well as the others. Though as I made my way up the stairs, I didn't miss the calculating look in Senri's eyes as his lips twitched into a smirk that was unlike him.
